These are the only lines I have in my /etc/network/interfaces

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

But, network manager is not managing the network connections.

From the bug report:

"This driver has been orphaned and does not build against kernel
version 2.6.31. The hardware it supports should now be handled by the
in-tree b43 driver."

It seems that b43 is supposed to do everything that broadcom-sta did.
(To use b43, you may need to install b43-fwcutter from contrib, and let
it download firmware for your card. I have to, at least.)

See:

FYI: iceape is the debian version of mozilla's seamonkey so if you're looking

I decided to give your approach a try. The installation of Thunderbird
went well and on start up it recovered all my saved emails and my
account settings. The Firefox installation has not been so successful.
The program starts, has picked up my bookmarks but crashes when I try to
go to some of my favorite web sites or if it reaches them it crashes
when asked to play a video. There is a message that the problem might
relate to previously opened browers but I had closed the iceape browser
before starting firefox.

Godo is correct on the suite. And, there does seem to be an x64 build:

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/1.1.18/contrib/seamonkey-1.1.18.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.gz

As for a 64 bit build to Firefox; I also did not see that. However, the
32 bit version should still work under x64, no?

When I upgraded to Squeeze iceape came along but it is a mess. On
startup it says a security component is missing and cannot retrieve
emails from some sites. In accessing web pages it cannot display pdf
files and some video formats although if the files can be downloaded the
installed apps - xpdf for example - can display these files.

I found that icedove can download the emails and iceweasel can play an
flv movie.

Should I abandon the iceape suite in favor of these individual apps?

Tom

Hi,
I have SeaMonkey 2.0rc1 on Squeeze. Just extract to /opt/seamonkey and
run /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey
If you are not addicted to IceApe i think this is best solution until
IceApe come to Squeeze.

Mail, browser, irc,...everything works fine.

Only problem with this solution is the lack of 64-bit builds. At least
there was every time I've looked. I'd *love* to use Mozilla-issued builds.

transparent mode printing in Debian

2009-10-18 Thread rvr

Hi all

I hope i get some light in this. I have Pro5 running in Debian and in SCO and
no problem at all, BUT, when it comes to printing it's a different story. Why
is that, simply because all the terminal emulator software runs on Windows,
Qvt Term to be more exact.

Here is my problem. In the conf file from the PRO5 you can define a printer
that when selected from PRO5 app it sends printing to the actual tty. The line
in the config is something like this

ALIAS P99 "> tty"

where P99 is the name the printer is known inside the pro5 app, which is
redirected to the terminal "tty" from which the connection originated.

Now, in the term emulator software qvt Term there is an option "Transparent
mode printing" which all it does is receiving the printing and call the
windows printing manager to pick a printer in the PC, so far so good, but

Is the a way to do the same thing but in Debian/Linux, till now there is no
such feature in any term emulation software.

Any hints ???

TIA

Try running lvdisplay with no arguments to see a list.

Then you'll see output like this:

  --- Logical volume ---
  LV Name/dev/gold-vol/music
  VG Namegold-vol
  LV UUIDiWUDhx-JmPh-Ajzf-yUz7-AMuZ-r1My-ff8gwx
  LV Write Accessread/write

You can be more specific with:

r...@gold:~# lvdisplay /dev/gold-vol/ms
  --- Logical volume ---
  LV Name/dev/gold-vol/ms
  VG Namegold-vol

As you can see the VG name is displayed there.

Failing that you could just run:

Cannot use /media/ properly

2009-10-18 Thread Merciadri Luca
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I am encountering a major problem which seems to be related to my
(actually su's) /media/ folder.

# ls -al | grep media
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root11 2009-07-17 17:01 cdrom -> media/cdrom
drwxrwxrwx 9 root root 4096 2009-10-18 21:00 media

seems pretty nice, but, when a device is mounted correctly, linked,
etc., and that I am able to access it with /media/, it always appear
as empty. For example, let's say that I plug a `disk1' key in one of
my USB ports. It is recognized, I can

# cd /media/disk1/

BUT, after this,

# ls -al
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 3 merciadriluca root 8192 2009-10-18 19:16 .
drwxrwxrwx 10 root root 4096 2009-10-18 21:42 ..

and the folder is apparently empty. However, when I ls -al on another
(Debian-powered) PC, the ls -al's output is correct, and there are
several files. It is the same for any external DD, or any other mass
storage device (that is, my non el cheapo usb key is not faulty).

My first suspicion was /media's permissions, but

# ls -al | grep media
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root11 2009-07-17 17:01 cdrom -> media/cdrom
drwxrwxrwx 9 root root 4096 2009-10-18 21:00 media

is what I encounter on my `faulty' computer, and

# ls -al | grep media
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2009-10-18 21:04 media

is what I can read on one of my `not faulty' computers (which has
actually no CDROM). The only difference seems to be in the `9' which
is a `4' on the `not faulty' computer, but, although I do not know
what this number aims at, it shouldn't be the cause of the problem,
should it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes of course.
But my goal is to build a backup script to automaticaly create a
snapshot of an LV mounted somewhere. So either the volume group name
or the logical volume name is unknown
In my process I do a 'reverse' research to find it out. Something like that :

#mount | awk some-args #and return something like this :
  [...many mounted devices...]
  /dev/mapper/VGNAME-LVNAME /mount/point #the line i want to find !

#lvdisplay /dev/mapper/VGNAME-LVNAME | grep "VG Name"

=> the previous command should return the value of the VG name of my

Hi,

I try to write a small script to find a parent LVM volume group of a

With mount command i'm able to find the "device" of the mount point
ex: /dev/mapper/VGNAME-LVNAME

But, when i try to use it with lvdisplay with
'/dev/mapper/VGNAME-LVNAME' as argument, the command fail.
my goal after that is to scan the results of lvdisplay and fond the
"VG Name" line.

Is there a way to easily find the VG of a Logical volume ?

At the top of the Folder list there are 4 headers, the far right being
Size. To the right of that is a small box with a down arrow that when
you click on it shows 2 items you chan enable/disable. Totals is one of
those options.

Hope this helps.

As it is dificult to read see this explication:
If you want to use a ' inside replace string such is the case you must:
type ' to close string
Then type " to open a new concatenated string
type ' to write '
type " to close the concatenated string
type ' to concatenate the next string (following with the replace string)

One method might be to force all traffic through a proxy, and require
authentication.

A more robust solution would be to take advantage of the iptables
ability to match a packet's 'user'. E.g., take a look at the sample
'rules' file included with shorewall:

# USER/GROUP This column may only be non-empty if the SOURCE is
# the firewall itself.
#
# The column may contain:
#
# [!][][:][+]
#
# When this column is non-empty, the rule applies only
# if the program generating the output is running under
# the effective and/or specified (or is
# NOT running under that id if "!" is given).
#
# Examples:
#
# joe #program must be run by joe
# :kids #program must be run by a member of
# #the 'kids' group
# !:kids #program must not be run by a member
# #of the 'kids' group
# +upnpd #program named upnpd (This feature was
# #removed from Netfilter in kernel
# #version 2.6.14).

Not sure what you by a whitelist.. But they do use greylisting, new

Perhaps you could enable the sid source repository in your sources.list,
and then create a squeeze deb package out of it, as described here:

The grub2 docs are, to say the least, sparce, and do not seem to have a

Right! The examples I found confirm that. They don't set the vga= either.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

The is the most common setting. Others have a theme in addition to the
above.

debian-start with large myisam table

2009-10-18 Thread Thomas Krichel

  Help!

A big myisam table of mine, res_creators_separate,

chichek:~# ls -l /var/lib/mysql/acis/res_creators_separate.MYD
-rw-rw 1 mysql mysql 2385125580 2009-10-16 13:41
/var/lib/mysql/acis/res_creators_separate.MYD

crashes mysql, in some subtle way. It hapens when I run the normal
debian start, i.e. including the lines

echo "Checking for corrupt, not cleanly closed and upgrade needing tables."
(
  upgrade_system_tables_if_necessary;
  check_root_accounts;
  check_for_crashed_tables;
) >&2 &

from /etc/mysql/debian-start. If I comment out these lines,
  everything is just fine.

I need a way to do what these commands do, on the command line, with
the server down, with some verbose output.

I have been fighting with this for almost three weeks now. I am at
my wit's end. Here come the gory details of my story.

The problem is limited to mySQL 5.1. I have 5.1.37-2 on squeeze. I
have two test systems, they both have this issue. The production
version runs 5.0, with similar tables, it is fine.

Let us make sure that the table is clean

chichek:/var/lib/mysql/acis# myisamchk -r res_creators_separate

MyISAM-table 'res_creators_separate' is not fixed because of errors
Try fixing it by using the --safe-recover (-o), the --force (-f) option or by
not using the --quick (-q) flag

I'm not going to suggest to what to do only what I have done as an
alternative.

I myself abandoned the Debian-stamp of Firefox (Ice-whatever) in favor
of a direct replacement from Mozilla.

I run a pure Mozilla T-Bird, Firefox, and Sunbird. For me, it's the
easiest way to keep current and I don't have to bother with the
anomalies of IceW from Lenny (I don't know it it carried over to
Squeeze).

If interested; simply grab your cup of tea from Mozilla, extract it,
move the Mozilla parent dir (Firefox for example) and move it to /opt.

Again, this is my preference and a presented alternative.

Good luck mate.

Iceape Problems - Is there hope for Squeeze?

2009-10-18 Thread Thomas H. George
Checking I found iceape-suite in Stable and Sid but no longer in
Squeeze.

You will have to wait for gnome-session 2.28 or downgrade gnome-power-manager to
2.24, the current version in unstable.

When gnome-session 2.28 is uploaded to unstable, gnome-power-manager 2.28 from
experimental will also be uploaded to unstable.

I.e, there is a reason why gnome-power-manager 2.28 is currently in
experimental :-)

Problems with wd_keepalive

2009-10-18 Thread azurIt
Hi,

I have problem with 'watchdog' package, especially with wd_keepalive daemon. It
looks like that wd_keepalive is enabling the watchdog at boot time but then it
is NOT sending any data to it. The consequence of this, in case the 'watchdog
daemon' is not started very soon, is a server reboot on boot time without a
reason. The problem can be easily reproduced:

1.) Enable watchdog and set it to watch /dev/watchdog .
2.) Slow down the boot up process. You can do this by breaking any application
so the init script will be waiting for it (and printing lots of dots). I'm
using MySQL server for this - just set the PID file to non-existing directory.
3.) Watch the hard reboot of server on boot time.

I consider this a very serious problem cos it can put the server into
unbootable stat - if you will follow my instructions above, you will be getting
infinite loop of rebooting (don't worry, fix it via single user mode).

Can anyone other confirm this bug ? Thnx.

azur

If you comment out the lines for your network interfaces (by putting a
'#' at the line start) in /etc/network/intefaces then Network Manager
will manage the connections. E.g. from my 'interfaces' file,

#allow-hotplug eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp

Leave the lines for the loopback interface alone though.

One drawback I've found is that when shutting the computer down, the
networks are disconnected when you logged out of your Gnome session,
which happens before any mounted network shares are disconnected. This
means I get a hang for a minute or so whilst CIFS times-out trying to
unmount.

No more /dev/cdrom

2009-10-18 Thread Raffaele Morelli
Hi,

Iam running debian lenny on amd64, I recently compiled my own RT kernel
2.6.31.4, everything works fine but my dvd rom doesn't work anymore.
K3b can't find it and no cdrom or dvd devices are created in /dev/

debian kernel 2.6.30-2 works and dvd is there.

Any help on this?

regards
-raffaele

Replying to myself here. Yes, I do need the hal library. And in addition
the mga driver needs to be compatible with that. I'm not sure, but
maybe both need to be the official Matrox drivers. Anyway the trick
was to copy both files (mga_drv.so and mga_hal_drv.so) from working
Etch installation. Now xorg.log shows that it loads mga_hal also and
dvi works like it did previously.

HPLIP installation / Device communication error

2009-10-18 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

I just bought a HP Deskjet F2290. I did plug it and everything seems
to have been working nicely (usb is fantastic).
However when I click on the HP systray icon, the GUI report some
issue "Device communication error". I am pretty sure everything is
ok, it just look like some permission error. Should I be part of some
kind of group for hplip gui to work ?

Thanks

Ref:
debian lenny+backports and I simply upgraded to hplip from testing:

Check out the pm-utils package. I consider those tools the catch-all for
suspend setup, complete with blanket commands for use regardless of the
underlying tool (like s2disk).

Thanks again for that tip. Gave it a try today, does everything I want
the way I want it to; being able to specify my own "wedges" is perfect
for me.

Still need to get the "user" ACPI working so that I can make use of lid
switch/power switch events, but that can wait until I have more time.

Cheers

I saw this command on the Debian list about 10 years ago
and have been using ever since:

cd /
