2011-01-06 Thread Robert Braddock

I don't know how to make anything else talk to the Xvideo overlay
device. The only mentions I've found were things NOT using it, or only
using a /dev/video0 type device. Kaffeine, vlc, and me-tv don't seem to
have an obvious way to access anything other than the /dev/video0 system.

Xawtv (which is teeny and can't resize), kdetv (which can't show the
actual video) and avview (which doesn't even run anymore) are the only
things I've seen that will use the Xvideo overlay instead of requiring a
/dev/video0 device. That's why, if getting /dev/video0 for a Radeon8500
were feasible, I'd like to leave this whole weird overlay device thing
behind, like everyone else seems to have...

Actually I'm trying to get the basic a/v-in to work (mainly the svideo
and rca audio inputs), not the tuner. I've kind of given up on the
tuner... It looks like the card includes such things as : FI123xx
(FI1236W) Tuner, TDA9885 Alignment-free IF-PLL, MSP34xx (MSP3445G,
MSP3430), and Rage Theatre revision 0003, if any of that helps.

Another thought - Followup on my own last message in thread: Does the same
happen when trying to get your local repo from a late snapshot?
Snapshot.debian.org someone just mentioned it. These are not changing and I
would suggest u can ignore the warnings you get with them. Afterwards u could
update your repo to date...

Re: Avoiding inconsistencies when using reprepro update

2011-01-06 Thread Simon Hollenbach

Hi Malte,
I think this warning means that reprepro knows about the volatiliy of the
archives and can't continue a file that has changed due to version upgrade.
Considering that it would be hard to copy a changing archive at once, and the
more time goes by, the more probable the downloaded parts are deprecated and
the progress is lost.

But I'm quite sure someone will (further) clarify that, maybe my guess already
points you in the right direction.

Re: o/t ipod

2011-01-06 Thread Pablo

Sorry if I am too late.
I once tried to connect a friend´s ipod to rhythmbox on Debian Lenny.

The behavior was really buggy. I managed to download only some of the
songs to the computer.
And after unmounting, the ipod was showing as empty. Even though when
remounted to the computer, rhythmbox was showing all music library.

I didn´t manage to restore the ipod to its original state but then I was
told that with some windows software, the ipod recovered, showing the
music library, and without any data loss.

I would be careful...

IIRC, there is no real good answer for linux. I think rythmbox has some
capabilities (that can be enabled or configured). You could also jailbreak
it and just scp stuff over (though you might need to hack around with plist
xml files). Itunes on windows is an option (though I'm not sure how to
handle account security or drm issues here). Also, if you go that route,
you're not really going to be able to keep your music synced up. If your
computer can handle it, you might research into running itunes inside of a
windows virtual box session.

fyi, i was wrong - there is a 'real good answer for linux'. i just had
a friend with an iphone plug into a straight ubuntu 10.10 computer
with rythmbox and it asked if i wanted to open it with rythmbox and we
uploaded a song. i think the device had to rebuild the song library
after because it took a minute to load up the player, but nothing was
lost and it was really only a minute or so for 15 gigs of music.

DSA is Debian Security Advisories. Each one is numbered for later
reference. You can read about them here.

  http://www.debian.org/security/

I recommend subscribing to the debian-security-announce mailing list.
Then you will get notice of each advisory as it is posted. It is a
low volume list for announcements only.

If you haven't already done so you should also make sure that you have
the security repository included in your APT sources.list file.

  deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free

Replace "lenny" in the above with the name of your current release.

The exim4 advisory is this one:

  http://www.debian.org/security/2010/dsa-2131

I install all security upgrades as quickly as possible on all of my
machines.

AFAICS, the only thing you need to do is 'modprobe hfs'.
Or add the line 'hfs' (without the quotes) in /etc/modules to make it
permanent.

Provided that /etc/fstab contains the line
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto rw,user,noauto 0 0
all that's needed is 'mount /media/floppy'.

Another option is to install hfsutils and use xhfs to exchange data
with the hfs-formatted floppy. This provides some conversion options,
notably between Mac text files with line endings and Unix text
files with line endings. No modules or mounting needed.

Make sure that it is 'if' for input-file and not 'of' for output-file.
Make sure the input file is from the floppy and not the output file or
you will write all over your data.

Fortunately when I tested that just now it seems to not actually write

Hint 1: Add "-o ro" to the options list to mount it read-only. Then
there shouldn't be any danger of modifying the disk.

  mount -o ro /dev/fd0 /mnt

Hint 2: Make a bit copy of the disk to a file and then mount the
file. Again, this should completely avoid any write to the floppy and
therefore be safe working with the data.

  dd of=/dev/fd0 of=fd.image.raw bs=8k

...remove the floppy from the drive...put in safe place...

  mount -o loop,ro $PWD/fd.image.raw /mnt

I am not sure what the optimal blocksize would be for the dd command
for reading the old floppy.

Actually, I think some of those listed car analogy givens aren't so widely
remembered.

Nevertheless, cars may be easier to understand for the completely
inexperienced layperson. Push the one peddle, go forward, push the other,
stop.
Turn the wheel left, . . .

Yet it remains difficult to get it through to some drivers' that they could
kill somebody. I still have some faith that the majority of idiot drivers
don't consciously want to kill, or at least don't want the legal
ramifications.

Saving data, regardless of importance, seems to pale by comparison. :)

How can "aptitute show" tell you what is the default grub to be installed
in lenny? :-P

I also have Grub legacy installed in Lenny (and also in Squeeze) but IIRC
(I'm speaking from memory, it was a year ago when I installed Lenny), it
was _my_ decision. I dunno for the auto-installer because I chose the
"expert" install and I remember that the bootloader screen asked two main
questions, a) what grub to install ("grub 1" or "grub 2") and b) where to
put the bootloader (mbr, first sector of partition).

I can be wrong because time passes very quickly and my memory abilities
decreases at the same speed O:-)

According to aptitude show, the default in Lenny is GRUB version
0.97-47lenny2, simply called GRUB. If you want GRUB 2 you have to ask for
grub-pc. :

l...@tux:~$ aptitude show grub
Package: grub
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 0.97-47lenny2
Priority: optional
Section: admin
Maintainer: Grub Maintainers
Uncompressed Size: 872k

Description: GRand Unified Bootloader (Legacy version)
GRUB is a GPLed bootloader intended to unify bootloading across x86 operating
systems. In
addition to loading the Linux kernel, it implements the Multiboot standard,
which allows for
flexible loading of multiple boot images (needed for modular kernels such as
the GNU Hurd).

Please note that GRUB Legacy is in maintainance mode and new features are
only accepted in
 GRUB 2 (grub-pc package).

It's addressed here:
http://www.kchmviewer.net/faq.html

Q: Font size increasing button does not increase the font size, just
changes the font to bold once.
A: Make sure you use resizeable (true type) fonts. The described
behavior is expected when bitmap fonts are used, as their size could
not be changed. Check your system configuration.

Though, I'm pretty sure that I am using a true type font and my font
size does not increase either. I wrote to the dev about this, but he
didn't answer.

You can also query Debian website for any package:

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

For example:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny/all/apt-file/filelist

Or even search what package contains a binary by using the dropdown menu
"package contents" option:

http://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=contents&keywords=apt-file

Wait... what kind of tests did you run and what are the results?

"Recursion" is a DNS server capability so you have to check your DNS
servers and while making any test against them, ensure you are always
quering the same DNS server.

Tools like "dig @ip_of_name_server_to_use" (in linux) and "nslookup -
debug hostname domain" (in windows) can help a lot. Both tools, by
default, will request recursion to the server so if that option is not
available, you'll get a warning.

I doubt it because jack server is not even installed on my squeeze and

Yes - but if it is no longer possible one can't, especially when the client
puts obstacles in the way.

Many clients think that computers are magic and that the supporting person has
a magic wand.

The client who wouldn't back up because she didn't want to spend any money,
found herself faced with a dead motherboard. She expected me to have a new
computer up and running with all her data on it within a few hours. (Note
that diagnosis was also to be included in the short timespan, as was
procurement.) It actually took me many hours to recover the data, which I
did successfully. Far from being grateful, she made my life a misery for
taking too long.

Had it been her hard drive that was dead, she might well have lost the data.

Avoiding inconsistencies when using reprepro update

2011-01-06 Thread Malte Forkel
Hello,

I would like to use reprepro to build a local repository based on the
Debian squeeze archive. The initial download will take some time and
will be interrupted irregularly because my machine is not up 24/7.

Before, when I was using simple mirroring software, that was not a
problem. The mirroring software would simply continue interrupted
downlads. But reprepro warns me of possible database inconsistencies
when I interrupt an update started manually.

What actual risks are there and how can I avoid them (other than running
24/7 :)).

Thanks,
Malte

I'm talking about LAN traffic, not internet traffic. Intercepting
traffic sent by the guy in the next table in the café.

Also, I wouldn't consider sniffing internet traffic "just a bit more
difficult". Certainly can be done under the right circunstances and
with the right tools, but it's not trivial.

If the wireless network is open, however, i just need a laptop with a
supported wireless car, be in range of the network, and fire up kismet
or a similar tool, and all traffic going thru the air can be read. I
believe this is completely passive, so no one can detect that traffic
is being read, unlike sniffing internet traffic - somehow you must
reroute the traffic to your machine, which leaves traces. Since the
wireless traffic is not encrypted, anything not protected by SSL or
similar can be immediately read.

If the wireless is encrypted, however, all I would get is encrypted
data. WEP can always be broken with enough traffic; for WAP there are
some attacks but I believe they are not yet as general and easy. It's
certainly not 100% secure (nothing really is), and less secure than
connecting via a cabled connection (which requires physical access to
the LAN, instead of just being within range, and some technique such
as ARP spoofing to be able to receive packages not meant for you), but
certainly better than an open network.

Whenever I'm connected to an open AP I just consider my laptop connected
directly[1] to the internet, with all inherent risks.

[1] even though most APs have at least NAT

Again, I was referring to sniffing by other people in the same AP,
before it reaches the internet.
