I'd suggest klavaro application to improve one's typing skills, it supports
several popular layouts including dvorak. With a blank keyboard one would need
to be able to blind type.

I like the app, I can certainly see improvement in my case.

$ aptitude show klavaro
Package: klavaro
Version: 1.9.3-1
...
Description: Flexible touch typing tutor
Klavaro is a simple tutor to teach correct typing, almost independently of
language and very flexible
regarding to new or unknown keyboard layouts.

 Its key features are:
 * Internationalization
 * Ready to use keyboard layouts
 * Keyboard layout editor
 * Basic course
 * Adaptability, velocity and fluidness exercises
 * Progress charts.

cron - best on constantly running machines
anacron - for machines that aren't always running, it'll try and trigger
events when it is
fcron - has features of both cron and anacron

Will D be open source?

The front end for the dmd D compiler is open source, and the complete
source comes with the compiler, and is available on github. The back end
for dmd is licensed from Symantec. The runtime library is completely open
source using the Boost License 1.0. The gdc and ldc D compilers are

Maybe is not there because the backend if not GPL licensed? :-?

SIP programs on PowerPC

2012-01-06 Thread Dima Sorkin
Hi.
I have Debian/SID on iBook G4 (powerpc), updated on a weekly basis.

Of the SIP programs I tried, only Twinkle succeeded to produce sound.

Ekiga and LinPhone connect to 500 at ekiga-dot-net (test call), with no sound.
Ekiga shows that no sound input stream is received from the ekiga server (but
video is ok).

Blink (built from source) could not be installed because of dependencies.

QuteCom does not provide a GUI option to register to a SIP account.

I wonder whether those issues are laptop specific, or powerpc specific (big
endian etc)?

Thanks,
  Dima.

P.S.
Please CC me, I am not registered to the list.

disturbances?
Have you upgraded a Debian from old->new stable before?

You should just upgrade to Squeeze.
Lenny was my first Debian (had tried to install woody years ago,
but the installer never got my X working, on various hardware...weird...
so I stuck with RH/Fedora from RH7.0 up to FC4, then played with
ubuntu, pclinuxos, and a few others. RH/FC, Ubuntu, PC, etc.,
all frequently broke stuff on updtes/upgrades).
So, the lenny->squeeze upgrade was my first Debian upgrade.

EASIEST UPGRADE EVER!
Seriously.
Not only was I thrilled that Squeeze was released on my birthday,
but I spent about 1 hour doing the upgrade, and was back in business as
if nothing had changed (except, well, stuff was even better).
No disturbances.
I'm not lying.
While I have tried numerous distributions in the past,
after such a completely seemless and ridiculously easy upgrade,
especially, and the rock solid/nothing ever breaks stability of Debian
STable, I just can't imagine myself ever wanting to change to another
distribution again. Ever.
So easy to upgrade.

everything worked out ok for users: they didn't have to reinstall.

You can take a look at it's main script [2] (bash, comments in spanish).

I think X can only work with what it is given. If the monitor fails for
some reason to impart information X's idea of what is possible is bound
to be incomplete. xrandr will display what it thinks it can do based on
what it knows, so, as has been pointed out, if it is lacking in knowledge
of what is possible you will have to tell it.

I'll not bore you with why it happens but the EDID data are not passed to
X on a couple of my machines, My xorg.conf is usually non-existent but
in this case I have:

   Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "1905FP"
   Modeline "1280x1024" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063

   HorizSync 30-81
   VertRefresh 56-76
   EndSection

   Section "Screen"
   Identifier"Default Screen"
   Monitor "1905FP"
   DefaultDepth 16
   SubSection "Display"
   Depth 16
   Modes "1280x1024"

Modeline is computed using 'cvt 1280 1024'.

Ok first I forced the driver installation:

dpkg -i --force-architecture

It installed but I was still not able to print after successfully setting it up
from within the cups admin webpage. I installed the ia32-libs package and it
worked. So for the benefit of the archives I thought I would share that.

I'm wondering about printing from the command line though. lp(1) just shows a
"no destination to printer" message. I think I might need the cups-bsd package
but I can't see why I shouldn't be able to print from the command line with the
normal cups packages.

jamie.

The official upgrade process for Lenny to Squeeze was not as easy as a
simple dist-upgrade, and I wonder if Lenny-to-Wheezy would be too
difficult to work out. I can't imagine that those with Lenny aren't
encouraged to go Lenny-Squeeze-Wheezy.

Truth be told, I'd just do a reinstall of Wheezy when the time comes.

It didn't seem to be particularly hard to follow the motif and find

Ufter upgrade Debian SID something wrong with sound - PulseAudio

2012-01-06 Thread Csanyi Pal
Hi,

I upgraded my Debian SID yesterday and since then something is wrong
with my sound.

I have installed GNOME and Window Maker X Window environments, and my
favorite is WM.

I'm using IRSSI and after upgrade I can't heare anymore the beep sound
when someone send me a message.

Evolution doesn't beep when mails arrived.

I'm using Skype too and can't heare it's sounds.
Skype says:
It appears your system has PulseAudio running: to change sound settings
you need to use your Desktop Manager volume control or PulseAudio volume
control.

When I try to make a test sound with Skype I can see on my WMMixer that
that the volume suddenly come to zero and afte ra while it come back to
the normal volume but during that I can't heare any sound.

I'm using Rhytmbox and I can heare music and voice from it.

So one application works and another doesn't work.

When I run Gnome-control-center I can't setup there any PulseAudio
thing.

How can I solve this problem?

Thanks for the link...

This type of documentation can always be found if you
already know the problem and solution, but it is invisible
if you only have a symptom. I was already expecting it
this time, but the first time I encountered it I took some
time to find the problem. The better way to describe it is to include
details on what kind of failure you will see, with some parts of the text
as it appears on the screen. I would not call it "boot timing issues",
but rather "No root file system on boot, drops to initramfs prompt".
Calling it merely "a debug shell" is too vague and does not match
google searches. People discussing it in forums and mailing
lists match the search terms, while the Debian release notes do not.

I generally print out the release notes prior to upgrade. In particular,
it might help to place this in chapter 5 rather than 4. Chapter 5
is "Issues to be aware of for squeeze". As this didn't happen in
Debian 5, I would think it belongs there.

There has been some improvement on the errors shown on the screen
lately, with at least 3 potential problems listed when this goes sour,
and one of them is the rootdelay option.

On laptops or cheap PS2/USB keyboards it's might be tricky.
Model M keyboards as these are the ones you referring to, originally made
by IBM, are still widely available either from your local second hand
computer shop or from eBay or you can still buy them new from Unicomp.

Cherry makes nice keyboards (the MX ones) or you can buy "Das Keyboard"
(available blank as well as printed) which AFAIK is based on Cherry.

We need the kernel option from then on for the kernel used by squeeze.
 We typically have
mdadm style software raid on all boot systems, using /dev/md0
typically as root file system. The rootdelay=9 doesn't cause much delay - that
is the maximum it might wait, but for us it perhaps pauses for 1 second.

On the most recent case, I saw this problem appear with an Intel based
motherboard, the SE7520JR22, from around 2006. We are booting from a pair
of SCSI drives on Ultra 320 with chipset Symbios Logic 53c1030.

I also had a problem last year with an IBM xSeries 345. In that case we needed
'rootdelay=9' and also kernel option: 'scsi_mod.scan=sync'. Again,
the up to date
kernel from Debian 5 didn't require this option to boot up the system.

You can use any keyboard as Dvorak, but I prefer to have properly labeled

Comment out the line 'force_load unix' in /initramfs-tools/hooks/udev

   update-initramfs -u

Personally I wouldn't bother. As you say, it does no harm and when in
time it disappears you will know the bug is gone.

That's why I suggested a blank as it won't confuse you or swap the keys.
It's not really that hard to memorise the full keyboard layout and learn

I guess I wasn't clear enough. This should have been:
What's wrong with simply re-arrange the keys on your existing keyboard
and changing the layout at the same time (I'm aware it won't be 100%)?
This way one can try it out without spending money and changing their

Because you wouldn't know where the letters are? I think that Weaver means a
physical keyboard, not the choice of layout in your OS.

Dvorak is a keyboard layout not a physical device.
You can buy a keyboard with a Dvorak layout by default but it might this
doesn't make sense if you're using more than one layout or you can buy
a blank keyboard - without anything printed on it.
What's wrong with simply using the existing keyboard with Dvorak layout?

Yup, that's for the "latest" update run.

The remainder updates are archived under "/var/log/apt/term.log.*.gz".

Ah, that command reminds my days with openSUSE :-)

In Debian there are also "/var/log/dpkg.log.*.gz" files which list the

I don't understand what's your final goal, let's see...

You have a hard disk with windows and debian installed on different
partitions. Fine.

GRUB is the default bootloader which allows you to boot into Debian or
windows. Fine.

You have deleted/formatted your Debian partitions. Fine. Then you
reinstalled it (? - this was not needed at all).

Now what do you want to do? What do you want to get? Do you want to keep
your Windows install and use the windows bootloader? If yes, there is a
"fixmbr" command you can run from within windows recovery console to
restore windows NT loader.

Hint: next time, instead installing GRUB into the MBR you can leave it on
the first sector of a partition and mark the GRUB's partition with the
bootable flag, this way you keep your windows bootloader intact if you
decide to remove linux afterwards.

Re: Csound5.15 ?

2012-01-06 Thread PMA

Andrei,

My apologies! In some-or-other mental cranny I knew well
that one can't just plunk new .deb packages into a Stable
release. Meanwhile, I see that Squeeze's Csound version
is 5.13, which will serve fine for awhile. No need for back-
port (especially, burdening someone else with it).

And I may well upgrade soon to Testing. Thanks for your
feedback!

Hi PMA,

The only method for Debian stable to get newer versions is via backports
(http://backports.debian.org), but only versions available in testing
are considered (currently 5.14). If this is new enough for you you can
try writing a message to debian-backports (CCing the maintainers at
csound@p.d.o) and ask if someone is interested in providing and
maintaining a backport.

It helps if you can provide good reasons for the backport (e.g. what
important features the newer version brings compared to the one in
stable) or you are even prepared to do the backporting yourself.

Another option would be to try to install the version from testing (with
all possible problems) or even use testing completely.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Did you redo *exactly* and *at the same order* the steps what worked

Yup, I did read it, but it does not say a word about the possibility of a
direct jump (lenny → wheezy) nor if the first decission was going to be
retired.

I think this kind of announcements and changes on project directions are
important enough to get them properly addressed and communicated to the
community.

how to uninstall the b43 and reinstall

2012-01-06 Thread lina

Hi,

a quick question, how to clear the b43?

a detailed background stories as following:

I installed the b43 following the advice given by list,
mainly from
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

it WORKED.

but yesterday I removed the old kernel 3.2-rc6, which is the one b43 worked,
and installed the 3.2 from kernel.org. I guess it's latest, than 3.2-rc6 ?

I don't know how to remove the b43 since the trial of
make uninstall in pathTo/b43-fwcutter-015 not work.

so I just did something like make install again, and then
1

export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware"
2

wget http://www.lwfinger.com/b43-firmware/broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2
3

tar xjf broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2
4 sudo b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR"
broadcom-wl-5.100.138/linux/wl_apsta.o

dmesg showed me:

Hey, same here ... a refugeee user of xfce.

uninstalling gnome is becoming almost ritural for me for major upgrade.
Done that for several releases. Aptitude makes it very easy.

Here is what you do with aptitude.
/^gnome$

Now you see gnome package.

Down to Depends and Recommends.
Press m to killl "A" markings for each.

Now you can remove gnome without having major issue. Remove package as
you need.

Sergi... as I see, "/Maildir" is a folder, it has to exist in your path
or you have to configure Courier to look into another different place,
which is not the case :-)

I can be wrong because I have not used Courier before, but this can be
easily tried, just create a new "test" account at:

/home/vmail/Maildir/t...@cub3.net/

Restart the daemons, send a message to that account ("To: t...@cub3.net"),
try to login and review the logs.

I can't say... I also have a self-compiled kernel (like you) but at least
until now I have not needed the headers files for nothing :-)

But again, kernel headers files have to match your exact kernel version
(the kernel version for you want to have the headers, of course),
otherwise it won't work.

Okay, so you were not able to boot with that kernel.

This has been commented some times here, in this mailing list.

I opened a thread asking for the same. You can read the full thread to
find out more tips but here are the conclusions:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2011/09/msg01903.html

The key was in using "localmodconfig" which allows to make what I call
express ("compile&go") kernels very fast which can be useful to try a new
driver or make some tests.

Stephen Powell has a very good and detailed doc about compiling kernels
in Debian, it's worth reading:

http://users.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/Kernel.htm

>> kernel you are running and what's wrong with it.
>
> You are admirable SERIOUS. Which is something I miss in my life.
> Haha... Inspiring.

Well, problems are just a bucnh of variables that need to be clearly
identified and defined. I say this because most of the time (90%) we -
users- think we have a problem when what we really got is a bit of mess
in our head :-)

Sure (this was also discussed in this same list, time ago...). The
possibility of jumping from Lenny to Wheezy was oficially mentioned here:

Debian decides to adopt time-based release freezes
http://lists.debian.org/debian-announce/2009/msg9.html

And this announcement was not corrected nor modified afterwards (unless I
missed something), so I managed the installation on my Lenny systems
having in mind such statement which it finally turned out to be not
possible :-)

> As far as I know (but can't find the reference right now) oldstable is

You mean this doc:

***
http://www.debian.org/security/faq.en.html#lifespan

Q: How long will security updates be provided?

A: The security team tries to support a stable distribution for about one
year after the next stable distribution has been released, except when
another stable distribution is released within this year. It is not
possible to support three distributions; supporting two simultaneously is
already difficult enough.
***

Yes, I was also aware of that document at the time I decided to migrate
from openSUSE to Debian. But -in the meantime- it came out the
possibility of having release freeze periods and the above mentioned
announcement lead me to think, in order to accomodate to the new release
plan, as a exceptional measure, lenny users could jump to wheezy.

However, it is still unclear to me if we have now adopted such stable
release freeze cycle, because wheezy is expected to be freeze on June
2012 and not December 2012 (nor it was on December 2011) :-?

Re: Screen resolution

2012-01-06 Thread Andrew Wood

You can tell by looking in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. If after looking at
the log file, the problem isn't readily apparent, post the contents
here, and someone should be able to figure out what's wrong.

-- Kevin

The pertinent contents of the log seem to be as follows. Im not sure how
it works. It seems to probe the monitor to see what resolutions it
supports. Should the controller board in the LCD therefore have a list
of supported resolutions on it which it reports back to X?

Im using a controller board from LCDparts.net They claim to have
programmed it for this screen and that if it wasnt programmed correctly
I wouldnt get any image at all and therefore its an OS problem but Im
not convinced.

+1; woody, etch, and sarge followed the same schedule.

For this there are some hints over Internet:

canon ip4700 printer/driver problem on 64bit karmic
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1408300

That method will sucedded depending on the packaging. If Canon packagers did
count on the possibility of installing the required 32-bits libraries so the
driver could be installed over 64-bits systems, then the installer will ask
for any dependency. I'm not sure this is an option for Canon drivers, though.

I would try (and then buy should they work) the Turboprint drivers which seems
to support your printer model (although just the printing function):

http://www.zedonet.com/en_p_turboprint_driver.phtml?printer=Canon_PIXMA_iP4700

Nex time, buy an HP multifunction (or another branded linux compatible) device
and ensure it is supported directly by manufacturer's driver :-P

Amongst other platforms I'm running Debian on PowerPC - iBook G4 is my
main machine.
What sort of problems are you experiencing?

I've had issues with EDID in the past when using too long monitor cable.
Try using a short and known-good cable. If this doesn't work either you
can try replacing/fixing the monitor (it helps if it is still under
warranty) or just hardcode the monitor capabilities in xorg.conf (you
will need some specs out of the user manual or the internet).

Hope this helps,

Kind regards,
Andrei

I've had to restore the Windows (XP) MBR before. I have successfully
used the ms-sys program, included on several rescue CDs. Just make sure
you use a version recent enough for the Windows version you need to
restore.

Could you elaborate on the "change of mind"? As far as I know (but can't
find the reference right now) oldstable is supported one year after a
stable release or until the next release, whichever comes *first*[1].

[1] Since Debian has been releasing once about every 2 years this
usually means oldstable is supported only one year after the release.

Installing 32bit Printer Drivers on Debian Stable amd64

2012-01-06 Thread Jamie Paul Griffin

Hi

I install the base Debian system, then X and my desktop which is
Window Maker and the GNUStep environment. Now I need to get my Canon
iP4700 printer set up.

I found the drivers as a .deb package on Canon's website. Can't
install them because of the architecture incompatibility. However, I
have read a number of articles and earlier forum posts where people
have done this but they all seem to be related to Ubuntu. I have also
read this article: http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/531
which explains about using 32 libraries to overcome this type of
problem. Before I do, though, I just wonder if someone could advise if
this is the right way forward; will it work basically? Has anyone else
installed this printer on the 64bit Debian version?

Any advise appreciated.

Jamie

Actually, I run it from a perl script, checking for the variable (it is
the same as in bash), it shows me zero - that is OK, but it is not so,
and I think mplayer2 supposes in case is was plaied OK, than exit
status OK too - regardless of writing failure.

Same situation w/ bash:

mplayer2 -nolirc -vo null -vc dummy -cache 4096 -cache-min 30 -ao
pcm:waveheader:file=./1.wav *.m4a; echo $?

It shows zero. And plays whole the file.

May Yoo know how to make mplayer2 to show tag info only and exit? - In
that case I can decompress w/ mac - for it returns correct exit status.

Well. I do not need that. I just want to decompress w/ exit status
available - whether it was written correctly or not, and to fetch
available tag info.

No idea what it was all about, but this problem cleared up with the

Hola

Salu2

OK,

it is working now on my machine.

The only thing I did is installing the package php-pear, it was not before.
Because I had not a dependency conflict, I thought it is not needed!?
