Re: Bug Squashing Party (BSP) ?
Hola! O algú altre s'anima a fer-ho? ISO Images Unable to Boot - Squeeze Wheezy for ia64
Atentamente, Gerardo Gómez Dear Sirs, I am trying to install Debian Wheezy or Squeeze (I have been a Squeeze user for 2 years on a Hp notebook with amd procesor) for a ia64 architecture Lenovo notebook from CD images. So I downloaded the iso images and checksums succesfully. However, after burning the cd they are unable to boot. I burnt several CDs with Wheezy first and finally with Squeeze in a Lenovo notebook with Window 7 and also with and old PC with Windows XP. They all failed to boot but are perfectly readable. Just to be sure, I downloaded and burnt a Fedora 17 iso image and the cd booted succesfully. I hope you could find the problem that prevent me from installing my favorite linux distro, and fix it. [Off-Topic] ¿Jugamos?
Buenas.

On Thu, 13 Dec 2012 12:16:29 -0300 P. Storage e raid

If you want to use Wheezy and don't mind if it is a little buggy, then you can go right ahead and use it. There is nothing stopping you. One of the reasons some (most?) of us like Debian is that Stable is stable. So Wheezy needs to stay frozen until all release-critical bugs are fixed. But another reason is that we can use whichever version we choose, whatever the powers that be choose to call it. Many on the list are running Wheezy already on their desktops, and have been for some time. And if in the end you don't like the Debian philosophy, you don't have to use Debian. Ubuntu, for example releases a new and up-to-date version every six months. In broad terms it is based on Debian Sid. Perhaps that - or one of the many other distros - would suit you better. It doesn't matter whether YOU can do it or not. You're not the OP. BTW - I also started late in the IT business (full time in 1977, though I was programming 10 years before that) - my experience before that was all electronics. Multilayer boards are no fun. Sometimes a board only should be repaired with a professional brandet hot air soldering station. To notice at what point you need unpayable expensive soldering tools, before you damage something, needs experiences. Usually you can use a good soldering iron or at least conventional professional brandet soldering and unsoldering stations. Since this is an open mailing list, we IMO should point out to be careful. If there should be a crack in a conductor path, somebody who knows how to solder, even without much experience, usually is able to fix it with even an elCheapo soldering iron, but in some cases you e.g. can damage the connections of the vias, so it's important to be aware of this. I need reading glasses for some time past and I don't own professional glasses for soldering. A friend need reading glasses too, but he has got special professional glasses for soldering. Repairing modern boards sometimes needs special tools. Btw. I'm experienced in soldering, I did a lot of audio and video engineering in my life. I several times repaired sewing machines, laptops etc., while I always repaired the electronics, I very often damaged the casing and it sometimes needed days to mount the casing, after the electronic was repaired within some minutes. What I want to say is, that even if you have much experiences in doing something, there are some very common miscalculation. I know how to open many computer cases even without damaging a seal of warranty, but I don't know every plug made of plastic, inside every sewing machine. I encourage everybody to repair as much as possible by ourself and to encourage people does include to share experiences. 2 Cents, Ralf -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Encrypted system and grub2 splashscreen
I've got encrypted wheezy (encrypted lvm) and I can't change grub2 splashscreen. The method I'm using: to put file.jpg into /boot/grub (which of course is on the unencrypted primary partition) and run update-grub. I'm sure that encryption is the reason of this problem, because i've tried it (the same method and the same .jpg file) on others unencrypted debians and it worked just fine there no matter if it was completely clean installation without xorg or regular gnome one. To the contrary on every encrypted debian installation (clean or with graphical environment) grub splash screen just wasn't working. On unencrypted installation when I run update-grub it says something like xxx.jpg was found in. But when system is encrypted it doesn't seem to find the file - at least there's no comment about it. That suggest that the problem occurs at the very moment of update-grub procedure - not when the computer is booting. It's update-grub command which cannot find the file. And that is strange because the file is on the unencrypted /boot partition. What's the solution here? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Major releases every six months. And support for it only lasts for 13 months. Fedora 17 is the current release, but 18 is avaiable as a beta. FYI: Stable versions are released every 2 or 3 years, and supported for 10 or so. Current stable release is Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 based on Fedora 12 and 13 code, which is about two to two and a half years old. So equivalent to Debian 6, more or less. I meant no disrespect! :) I ALWAYS read the whole reply. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Too_long%3B_didn't_read Interesting. I was surprised to find my usage not described in that Wikipedia page. In some places, particularly, slashdot.org, I have seen tl;dr used also as a self-summarizing of one's own posting. Of So it can also mean too long don't read? After all it is an acronym and the letters are supposed to mean something. :( Several thoughts/responses come to mind with your question. 1) I have never thought, too long; don't read. I have always thought, too long; didn't read. 2) I don't think I have a problem with someone using, don't, because it is just another form of the verb. I don't recall whether I have ever had occasion to consider verb form changes in acronyms before, but I will be on the lookout from here on. 3) Solely from context, I have interpreted this usage as a pre-emptive provision: --- Here is the too long; didn't read version, in case you aren't going to read the complete details. Possibly, because I know that I am an excessively wordy writer, or because I know that not everyone will need the complete details. Therefore, I am providing a tl;dr version as a courtesy (or to prevent possible rude tl;dr replies). --- I wonder why/how it started being abused in that way ... I'm not sure if your concern is over the verb form (see 1 and 2 above) or over the contextual usage (see 3 above). In response to the verb form concern, I will hold off on my judgment until I can consider other examples. In response to the context concern, I think that is just etymological history being formed. I can understand and empathize with the feeling that it is an abuse of language as I am often on that side of the fence, myself. In this case, I feel that it is a logical extension of meaning. course, I see now that I probably should have placed it at the top for better clarity, or used, tl;dr version:, perhaps. Do you see it as abuse, or just following a trend? Linguistic history is replete with usage and spelling changes, which are often considered, at first, as abuse. Then, eventually, if the trend continues long enough, the change will be considered the new norm. I must admit this as a fact of life, while, at the same time, admit to feeling that some of it is abuse or laziness. Keeping in mind, of course, that tl;dr isn't really a properly accepted word at this time, but an Internet slang or jargon. In some cases, I must admit that the general populace has accepted something which I, personally, will never accept. One example is RTFM (mentioned in the previously referenced knowyourmeme.com page for tldr): I will never utilize this acronym in my own writings (due to offensive language), but I recognize it's commonality and general acceptance on the Internet. I have seen various forms of it and understand how it gets used in different ways. From http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/tldr Usage Most of the time, tl;dr is used to call out another user on the length Really? It could be just a statement of fact ... This was my exact reaction when I first read that definition. :) Although, I think it does often include at least a bit of rudeness, in the sense that the reader is not giving a courteous full reading to the writer's thoughts. I originally thought you were accusing me of this apparent lack of courtesy. of their post. However, in cases of more courteous exchanges and serious discussions, tl;dr can be self-invoked by the original poster as a disclaimer to the readers. It is then paired with a brief summary of the longer original text. Really? Is this is an example of acronym abuse evolving right before our very eyes? The etymology of this second meaning would be an interesting read. I agree that this acronym is evolving quickly, as many words and acronyms are doing these days.

Here are instructions: http://backports-master.debian.org/Instructions/ I recently described the procedure in some detail here: https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2012/12/msg00351.html You might also want to try the backported newer versions of libvirt-bin kvm packages. There have been several improvements. However the internal PCI device numbering did change and this will prevent some VMs from starting due to conflicts until their xml configuration file has been updated. Either update the xml or recreate the VM. If you hit this problem I can clue you in as to the xml edit to make. It is simple but I forget off the top of my head at this moment.
