Re: Skype, Pulseaudio, very quite output from a speaker ( fixed)
Here is the fix: Skype has been known to mess up the mixer settings. So disable the automatic configuration of the mixer controls in Skype: right-click with your mouse on the Skype icon in the system tray - Options - Sound Devices - remove the tick at: Allow Skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels. Click Apply. Then close Skype (right-click with your mouse on the Skype icon - Quit). Then use Synaptic Package Manager to install pavucontrol (Pulse Audio Volume Controller). Use that application to set up your input device. Most built-in mics are mono. The default setting on the Input Control is to lock the RL channel together. By reading the mono mic as stereo, PulseAudio cancels the input. Click on the middle button on the upper right of the control panel to unlock the RL channel. Move either the left or right channel to 10 leaving the other channel about 90. You should now see the VU meter sensing sound. Now start Skype again. The test call should register your voice now. Esto también te puede interesar: How can I stop Raspbmc from removing my directories at reboot? http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/7210/how-can-i-stop- raspbmc-from-removing-my-directories-at-reboot Bien, el caso es que quiero ejecutar un script Perl o Python desde el navegador de otro PC. (...)
Not quite, only almost. vi is always a good idea where text is concerned. dos2unix can sometimes sort out line terminators. Having used dos2unix it would have been worth trying gimp and vi again - though not,. of course, Office. Shoot enough, you're bound to hit something. Only if you are shooting in the right direction. And if you hit, that is great. We are after all shooting blind. Gene doesn't exactly give us enough information for the more usual methods of troubleshooting - and if gimp is worth a try, vi certainly is. Lisi As previously posted Lisi, problem is in iceweasal, and solved. Before it decided to spin forever, it actually did download the pdf I was clicking on. I found 4 copies in the Downloads directory when I looked. Installed okular, which was missing from this install, and it printed right up. That was the target of this exercise. ;-) Now, sitting here over a morning cuppa and contemplating the rest of my sins, I am wondering if the missing okular was the problem. What does iceweasal by default call to, to process a .pdf? According to about:config, /usr/bin/acroread, which does not exist, and on the next line it calls /usr/bin/acrorerad #custom comment. That will likely cause iceweasal to throw up its hands. Sigh. Since its user set, I'll change both to point at okular. FWIW, for those using acroread, okular is what acroread should ought to have been but isn't. Particularly when actually printing the document. Using acroread, if the printer sneezes and wrecks a page, it just goes on its merry way, but okular see's the error, waits for me to clear the jam, and dutifully reprints the jammed page(s) even if the printer is in duplex mode. That was a very welcome improvement discovered by a jam. Thanks Lisi. Cheers, Gene Heskett -- There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. Re: incomplete update(?) trashed my system
Quoting Charles Blair (c-bl...@illinois.edu): Personally, I would chown -R user.user the files and directory tree-tops I was going to move. That sorts out the permissions change. Then I would mv -i ... /home/user (the -i is habit, like with rm -i). Because of the directory recursion, it might take a while, so mv -iv will give a screaming list of files moved. I used chown -R user:user . at the top of /root/.cache, /root/.mozilla, and /root/.claws-mail. When I typed mv -iv ./.cache /home/username, it refused to do anything because there was already a .cache there. Well, the idea outlined above depended on adding a new user to take over the role of running things that shouldn't be run as root. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough in the previous post to that quoted, not knowing that you were going to attempt to merge things with a preexisting user. In a reckless mood, I used rm -R and rmdir to get rid of /home/user/.cache, and then used mv -iv to move .cache from /root. I did the same with .claws-mail and .mozilla. I can't understand why you rm things. Why not mv them? Then you can restore all or parts of them, or just pick over them later. Ironically, I mentioned that the -i in mv -i was redundant because I thought you were moving files into the newly created and virtually empty directory. Unfortunately I don't know what's gone missing from your user's mail and browser. It should be just configuration stuff which can be re-set up. .cache shouldn't matter at all as applications should just recreate it as and when required. Some du and df output after these operations is shown below. / certainly looks healthier. When I typed apt-get update, it seemed to begin as desired, but quickly stopped with the message Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn. idmapd fails in dracut - nfsroot over nfsv4 with wrong UID
Hello, debianics, it sounds like an age old problem solved quite a lot of times, but I still can't get it to work. I try to set up a diskless cluster in beowulf style with nfsroot. Base is debian wheezy. short story: when I boot into nfsv4 root, I find weird file ownership drwxr-xr-x 2 4294967294 4294967294 4096 Feb 15 13:00 bin drwxr-xr-x 3 4294967294 4294967294 4096 Feb 15 15:15 boot drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 3240 Feb 15 15:38 dev drwxr-xr-x 115 4294967294 4294967294 4096 Feb 15 14:27 etc drwxr-xr-x 2 4294967294 4294967294 4096 Dec 24 13:41 home indicating that idmap demon is not working as it should. The only workaraound to get rid of the problem is to mount nfsroot as nfsv3 instad of nfsv4 - see here : http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-networking-3/does-pxe-booting-nfs-root-supports-nfsv4-925154/#post4583418 and here http://serverfault.com/questions/379486/netboot-debian-wheezy-from-nfs-v4 The symptoms are well known and reported repeatedly. However, I checked following underlying causes - none was reflecting my Situation: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=724514 http://layer-acht.org/fai-irc/fai.log.20120613 https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/boot/dracut/dracut/+/3eca0cc846e89675949abb11e9606f3222a2e266%5E%5E!/ https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multipleid=537969 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=922031#c5 I updated dracut to 040-207-g7252cde from testing - same picture - I have to use dracut instead of initramfs, since my cluser uses bonded Ethernet links which I could not get working with standard initfs. The plan is to layer common ro installation and nodewise rw-dirs using aufs and exporting them individually per node. Server has dnsmasq, (providing DHCP, DNS and TFTP) and nfs-kernel-server. My first setup started from a HD install. After switching from readonly to writable aufs, everything stalled and I blamed aufs as dmesg recommended... http://sourceforge.net/p/aufs/mailman/message/33392409/ I got rid of this problem by switching the server back form testing 3.16 kernel to standard 3.2 from wheezy. Don't ask me why... This way II messed up this HD based installation, so I decided to try a new clean one based on the debootstrap tool following this pointer https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/OnNFSDrive - same picture - following https://dracut.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page I tried both the deprecated command syntax root=/dev/nfs nfsroot= and the recommended one: root=nfs4:[server-ip:]root-dir[:nfs-options] rd.nfs.domain=NFSv4 domain name basically no difference I tried to start rpc.idmapd and stad manually from the console, which is possible either from a nfsv3 root or by copying the nobody-owned system into ramdisk and chown them to root. Then I can see error messages like rpc.statd: Failed to create /var/lib/nfs/state.new: Read-only file system I configured dracut manually to include this path - no help. When I get everything right to fire up idmapd manually, I can mount my nfsv4 export with proper UID. So, name resolution should be OK. I even could manage a manual switch_root (over ssh login...), but did not yield a decent running system this way (there is more stuff done during init I'm afraid, like /proc, /dev, /sys). But it tells me that server and network issues are OK. It's a initram problem. I can capture long logs of the init process. As far as my understanding goes, dracut tries to kill both statd and idmapd at 99-nfsroot-cleanup. I think it shuold not do so anayway, but it even looks like it cannot get a PID for idmapd, so I suppose it could not even succeed in getting it up and running properly before. Basically I think the problem is located somewhere between the integration of dracut, nfsv4/idmapd and debian packaging scheme. see also http://marc.info/?l=linux-nfsm=121621383812750w=2 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=737554 I hoped that systemd might help out, but could not get it properly installed into the debootstrap base, see here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=668001 Do I just miss some silly detail? Or is debian dracut nfsv4-root simply no valid setup yet? I can provide MBytes of logs and screenshots, and with wireshark, we may be easily multiplying this figure Anybody out there to collaborate in a solution? yours Wolfgang Rosner -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. multiarch broken?
Hello! My system is a debian wheezy amd64 with multiarch enabled since I installed eagle (i386 only) some time ago. I also had teamviewer (i386) installed. The system was up to date most of the time. Some days ago I tried to install a locally build version (build in a i386 chroot environment) of wine 1.7.35, which didn't work because of some unmet ia32 dependencies. The apt-get output suggested to fix the problem with 'apt-get -f install'. Luckily I was able to cutpaste the output into a text file X-( This command uninstalled almost the complete Xorg and Gnome packages. Because of my log, I was able to reinstall the removed packages. But I was still unable to install the homemade wine because of some strange dependencies with libncurses5. I now decided to use playonlinux and installed this package together with the debian wine and wine64-bin package (amd64 versions). After installing a wine 32 bit version with playonlinux, I was asked to install wine:i386. And now it started all over... I'm getting the unmet dependency messages again. But now 'apt-get -f install' did nothing... Now I tried to fix the problem and removed all installed i386 packages (eagle, teamviewer ...) and did a 'dpgk --remove-achitecture i386'. After an 'apt-get update' and an 'dpgk --remove-achitecture i386' I tried to reinstall playonlinux with it's dependencies. And I also tried to reinstall eagle... Well, the idea outlined above depended on adding a new user to take over the role of running things that shouldn't be run as root. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough in the previous post to that quoted, not knowing that you were going to attempt to merge things with a preexisting user. My mistake. I hope I got lucky. fuse library and ntfs ?
Mounting an NTFS partition as a user was set-up and working properly. the partition is ON MY HARDDISK. a lot of what i'm reading about the problem seems to be associated with usb sticks (??) upgraded (i'm running wheezy) now i get this : Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root. Please see more information at http://tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/#unprivileged so there is a very long thread under bug reports about this problem in conjunction with a usb drive or stick. and at the end of it all I still don't have a solution to the problem. from the web page nprivileged block device mounts work only if all the below requirements are met: ntfs-3g is compiled with integrated FUSE support it's not showing up as a module. says integrated, i've long forgotten how to check to see if something's integrated into the kernel at this point. the ntfs-3g binary is at least version 1.2506 i'm not sure, here's the debian package version : 1:2012.1.15AR.5-2.1 the ntfs-3g binary is set to setuid-root well i didn't do that. i guess i should, but why is it i don't think that's actually going to fix my problem. let me go try that. nope - doesn't fix the problem. the user has access right to the volume yep. the user has access right to the mount point yep. happy to follow a link to the solution Thanks, Brian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. 32bit compatibility for NVidia binary drivers in wheezy+backports
Hi list, I'm trying to install the NVidia binary package in Debian wheezy from wheezy-backports on a 64bit system — which went fine. I've added multiarch: % dpkg --print-architecture amd64 % dpkg --print-foreign-architectures i386 But if I try to install the 32 bit compatibility package from multiarch… % aptitude install -t wheezy-backports nvidia-kernel-dkms:i386 The following NEW packages will be installed: nvidia-kernel-dkms:i386{b} The following packages are RECOMMENDED but will NOT be installed: libcuda1:i386 nvidia-driver:i386 0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 155 not upgraded. Need to get 9,919 kB of archives. After unpacking 26.4 MB will be used. The following packages have unmet dependencies: nvidia-kernel-dkms : Conflicts: nvidia-kernel-dkms:i386 but 340.65-2~bpo70+1 is to be installed. nvidia-kernel-dkms:i386 : Depends: dkms:i386 (= 2.1.0.0) which is a virtual package. Depends: nvidia-kernel-common:i386 (= 20110213) but it is not going to be installed. Conflicts: nvidia-kernel-dkms but 340.65-2 is installed. The following actions will resolve these dependencies: Keep the following packages at their current version: 1) nvidia-kernel-dkms:i386 [Not Installed] The same if I try to install any other part of the NVidia driver. For example: % aptitude install -t wheezy-backports libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 The following NEW packages will be installed: libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386{b} 0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 155 not upgraded. Need to get 10.6 MB of archives. After unpacking 41.0 MB will be used. The following packages have unmet dependencies: libgl1-nvidia-glx : Breaks: libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 (!= 340.65-2) but 340.65-2~bpo70+1 is to be installed. libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 : Breaks: libgl1-nvidia-glx (!= 340.65-2~bpo70+1) but 340.65-2 is installed. The following actions will resolve these dependencies: Remove the following packages: 1) libgl1-nvidia-glx 2) nvidia-driver 3) nvidia-glx 4) xserver-xorg-video-nvidia Needless to say, I'm not keen on deinstalling the 64bit variants of these packages. The -ia32 variants of the packages (for example libgl1-nvidia-glx-ia32) fail with similar error messages. As far as I know, these problems don't exist in jessie, and all my Googling got me to jessie results, or to wheezy w/o backports. Is there a way to install without a dist-upgrade (or pinning) to jessie? Thanks! A. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Reason being that the 'primary thread' where your message is posted (https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2015/02/msg00630.html) is under What's going wrong? which is a different primary topic. ...And that is how Thunderbird is grouping it for me, and this is also the case with the mail archive at https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2015/02/thrd2.html ...This grouping mistake is because I replied to a random debian-user post and deleting the subject and added my contents in the body (not thinking of email header references). Re: incomplete update(?) trashed my system
Quoting Charles Blair (c-bl...@illinois.edu): Well, the idea outlined above depended on adding a new user to take over the role of running things that shouldn't be run as root. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough in the previous post to that quoted, not knowing that you were going to attempt to merge things with a preexisting user. My mistake. I hope I got lucky. For better or worse, I've routinely been using the su command after logging in, although I've become aware that I should stop doing that. Take a look at ls -l /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/ The permissions should be -rwsr-xr-- 1 root messagebus [...] dbus-daemon-launch-helper Have they changed, and to what? The permissions are -rwxr-xr-x Hmm. Unless you have a typescript of the changes you made, I'm not sure you can tell how that came about, and whether any other files have been adjusted. I'm guessing I need to type (as super-user) chmod u+s dbus*per Looking more carefully, there should be no execute permission for others (o-x). ls -l again after making any change. and chmod a=100 dbus*per That contradicts the previous command, setting it to --x--x--x instead. Perhaps you're trying to set ownership? (which you didn't display). In which case the command is chown, and the desired ownership is root.messagebus but the group ownership *number* (GID) could be anything around 1xx because it varies from installation to installation. *Your* GID will be in /etc/group like so: messagebus:x:105: (which is mine). So ls -ln gives *ME* -rwsr-xr-- 1 0 105 ... dbus-daemon-launch-helper Cheers, David. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? how to remove libsystemd0 from a live-running debian desktop system
http://lkcl.net/reports/removing_systemd_from_debian/ i've documented the process by which it is possible to run some of the debian desktop window managers (TDE, fvwm, twm etc.) without the need for systemd or libsystemd0 or any components related to systemd whatsoever. the process is not without difficulties, however out of (at the time of writing) only two people who have followed this procedure, i was the one that ended up having to disable udev: the other individual had a working system (devoid of libsystemd0) purely by following only the instructions to alter and replace bsdutils from the util-linux package. the reasons for demonstrating that this is possible have absolutely nothing to do with my *personal* (technically-based) dislike of systemd, although my reasons for actually removing libsystemd0 from personal systems *are* based on a technical assessment (mostly with a sysadmin eye). but, i repeat: my *personal* choice has *nothing to do* with the reason for posting this documentation. the reason for demonstrating that this is possible is because nobody has yet made it clear to either the upstream developers - or to the distro maintainers who unfortunately are caught in the crossfire - that systemd's unilateral adoption is fast becoming an all-or-nothing polarised choice that reminds me keenly of the polarised Microsoft Monopoly power and dominance of the late 1990s. and that *really is it*. the technical issues are completely irrelevant: those can and will be solved. already we have evdev, mdev, devuan, uselessd and many more, but those technical options are *COMPLETELY SHUT OUT* by the exclusive - monopolistic - position that systemd now has. to illustrate the dominance of libsystemd0, if you carry out an apt-get --purge remove libsystemd0, *all* of the packages and many more on the following PNG will be removed: http://anfo.slavino.sk/libsystemd-journal0.png that list is woefully incomplete, so i have generated a current list using apt-rdepends -r libsystemd0 | some manual magic | sort | uniq. http://lkcl.net/reports/removing_systemd_from_debian/list_of_libsystemd0_dependent_packages.txt the list is a whopping 4,583 packages (from the current debian/testing). apache2-dev, androidsdk, apt-cacher-ng, avahi-daemon, blender, bluetooth, bochs, cairo-dock, calligra, consolekit, cups-daemon, cups-core-drivers, cups-driver-gutenprint, dbus - this is just a few major software libre packages i can see in the the first 9% of the list that are affected (cannot be installed) should anyone exercise their right to choose *not* to have libsystemd0 on their machines. even dh is on the list. erlang is on the list! kde, gimp, xfce, lxde, gnome, libreoffice, xine, mediawiki, mplayer, network-manager, openjdk-7, phonon, php (??? why is php dependent on libsystemd0??), pidgin, policykit-1, postfixadmin (??), pulseaudio, qemu, syslog-ng, vlc, wicd (client and server), xbase-clients (??), x11-apps (??), xbmc, xchat... those are just ones that i recognise out of the 4,500+ packages that are not permitted to be installed. so the short and long of it is: i do not like it when people are not given the freedom to choose... and that includes when, just like when microsoft was so dominant in the 1990s, the choices they are presented are not really a choice at all. what i have done therefore is to show how to modify the debian packages for policykit-1, dbus, pulseaudio and util-linux, such that libsystemd0 may be entirely removed. removal of libsystemd0 from those packages trims that list of several thousand unilaterally-excluded packages *significantly*. this process comes with a price: i had to disable udev, and i had to re-enable the keyboard and mouse sections in xorg.conf that i had added years ago. however, already within hours of the report's publication i have received word from one other person who did *not* have the same extensive difficulties that i encountered: udev (unmodified) worked perfectly for them. in a follow-up message they did however explain that they have successfully installed and then removed (at an earlier point) a source-compiled version of mdev, which illustrates that they have some quite significant experience in maintaining a hybrid of standard debian packages and system-critical packages compiled directly from source. so, in short, i have two key things to say. to debian-users: you don't have complete choice (yet), but i have demonstrated with a few hours work that there is a way to run (certain) desktop environments without requiring libsystemd0 or any of its dependencies, and after a little investigation there do appear to be people working hard to give you your right to choose what software to run *without* having to abandon debian. to debian-developers: the technical issues are irrelevant (and can always be solved over time) - it's that you are complicit in removing people's software freedom right to choose what to run on their system: that is why so many users
