Yes, but the original poster asked if there was anything he should do prior to booting into Windows for the first time. It is entirely possbile to have installed Debian before you boot into Windows - the crucial thing is not to move the first Windows partitions apart from resizing. When Windows first boots, it should deal with the issue of disk size correctly. For a potential Windows 8 -> 10 upgrade on that specification of machine: look carefully at Microsoft's advice including using USB sticks as extra storage temporarily If you dig back through Planet Debian, you'll find a post of mine about how to rescue the upgrade if it all goes wrong. If the machine only has 32G of SSD storage, then it's possibly too little disk space to dual boot well. Windows 10 will want approximately 20G to run. Although I referenced the http://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Acer/T100TA, it may also be best to look at the links for the Acer X205TA referenced in the early paragraphs there. I'm quite tempted to write up a detailed blog on how to get dual boot working with a preinstalled Windows installed using UEFI and the steps to install Debian in this situation All the very best, AndyC

Too many screen clearings
Some reasons make me use own splash screens in my debian stretch. My service starts just /dev/fb0 is set. I found unwanted screen clearing occurs three times up to my main program starts from ~/.config/openbox/autostart: 1) getty@tty1.service does it (despite autologin, -noclear option in command line, TTYVTDisallocate=no in service header); 2) X does it (despite only mode 800x600-16 is used from grub up to openbox, Option "ModeSetClearScreen" "off" for vesa driver in lightdm.conf); 3) openbox-autostart does it (as user has no choice this was solved by direct disabling xsetroot in this file). This is because you use only the first argument "$1" in your script. The globbing happens before your script gets started. The shell parser converts your command enscript+ * to a list of arguments enscript+ file1 file2 ... which your script gets to see as "$0" "$1" "$2" ... As i wrote a few days ago, "$@" (with quotes around it) gives you the list of arguments: "$1" "$2" ... According to its man page, enscript is willing to take more than one filename. So may simply write enscript --media=letter -2 --landscape --borders \ --header='$n|A.D. $D{%Y.%m.%d}|$* gmt | Page $% of $=' "$@" If enscript would only take one filename per run, you would have to execute it several times in a loop: for i in "$@" do enscript --media=letter -2 --landscape --borders \ --header='$n|A.D. $D{%Y.%m.%d}|$* gmt | Page $% of $=' "$i" done This would also be the way to go if enscript concatenates all filenames of a run to a single output file whereas you might want several output files. Another way of handling an argument list of variable length is the variable "$#" which gives the number of arguments and the command "shift" which deletes "$1" and shifts "$2" to "$1", "$3" to "$2", and so on. It also counts down "$#". So you always use "$1" and give it new values by "shift": while test "$#" -ge "1" do enscript --media=letter -2 --landscape --borders \ --header='$n|A.D. $D{%Y.%m.%d}|$* gmt | Page $% of $=' "$1" shift 1 done Have a nice day :) Thomas

Thanks. A week or so ago I asked for help, because enscript was not seeing changes which I made to the configuration file in order to change the margins and customize headings; that I why I ended up putting the customization into a bash script "enscript+". However, just now, when I executed "enscript *" on a directory of files, to see whether the unmodified package could handle globs, all of the files printed properly, together with the customized headers! So now I am confused, but at least I am able to use the glob "*" and have the headers and margins which I desired. Thanks. RLH

My goal is to have a system where if either drive fails things will a) continue to run from a single drive, and b) be able to replace the failed drive with a new one of the same size and have the system rebuild into a mirrored array again. It is not clear to me how I need to begin the installation sequence. My question: Do I install Debian to a single drive and will installing mdadm then allow me to add the second disk and setup RAID? Do I need to configure each drive in some way before installing Debian and then mdadm? If there is an up-to-date "how to" that describes this please just point me there. I have not found anything that seems to start at the point where I just have bare metal. Regards, Tim
