At the moment, I just feel too old to bother with that. ;-(

And, as I mention below, I don't expect to have many meetings in the near
future that would require undocking my machine (from my KVM setup).

> Have you identified a make and model laptop and a make and model docking
> station that are known to work with your chosen release of Debian?

No. I use Wheezy in my everyday driver, but that won't work for the
programming I want to do -- it needs something like GCC 7., so I
installed Buster on the laptop which does have GCC 8.

For now, I'll just use the Inspiron without a docking station -- I don't
expect to have many (in person) meetings available to get help with my program
at this point in time.

When things change, I may look for an inexpensive (possibly used) laptop with
a USB C port, which I think should give me a good chance at getting a docking
station to work.

Thanks for your interest -- have a good day, and stay healthy!

When happens when you connect the docking station to a USB 2.0 port

I have found that it is often difficult to determine if some hardware
accessory is going to work on some computer with Debian by RTFM and STFW
alone. Ultimate, you have to "walk the walk", install it, and see what
happens. Sometimes it just works OOTB. Other times, you need to do

If you can find an error message and identify which package is

Have you identified a make and model laptop and a make and model docking

If so, that must be a change in defaults from when I installed it. I
don't remember ever adjusting configuration in this regard (although
that's not an absolutely conclusive data point, as my memory is not
perfect).

The man page confirms that, though; it says that NEWS is the default,
and this can be changed with the 'which' option. Indeed, my
/etc/apt/listchanges.conf includes a line reading 'which=both'.

For the OP: you might want to try with that setting, and see whether the
results match what you want.

It does the exact opposite, because in your configuration testing has

For what you wrote above you don't need any pinning, just have both

On my system, when I run

apt-get dist-upgrade

and say "yes" to the list of packages, the following things happen:

* apt-get downloads all the packages, but does not install them yet.
* apt-listchanges kicks in, automatically extracts and/or downloads the
necessary changelogs for all the packages just downloaded, and
presents just the new parts (relative to the already-installed
  package version).
* After I exit the pager which displays the changelogs, apt-listchanges
gives me a prompt to confirm whether I want to continue the upgrade
  or not.
* If I say yes, the upgrade proceeds. If I say no, apt-listchanges
  aborts the upgrade process.

This sounds like exactly what you want, handled purely automatically. Do
you not get this behavior (or a comparable one) with apt-listchanges
installed on your system?

Okay, How can I do that for each upgradeable package ?

If I run :
apt-get changelog bluetooth

I get all of this : https://termbin.com/xdp5
While the responsible GUI software of the updates shows *only the latest
changes* that come with the upgrade package :

How can I choose from "changelog" to see *only the latest* changes?

What I want to do in the end, is what the GUI system update software

That's an important distinction here. Firmware does not eat RAM, modules
do.

Ok, from the most possible offender to the least one:

I'm not saying that you should poke'em with "modprobe -r" - unloading
these would be difficult if possible at all - I'm saying that a
bugreport is in order.

If possible, I'd test it headless - i.e. reboot with amdgpu blacklisted,
run firefox in TightVNC, watch the results. But that raises the question
whenever your rig will boot at all without the operational videocard, so
I'd put it into the "desperate measures" category.

Thanks.
Afaik there are no proprietary kernel modules in the default buster install and
I did not install proprietary modules either. BUT I did install proprietary
firmware for the devices.
First I only installed firmware-amd-graphics as it is necessary for XServer to
work. But the same GPU was already present in my previous desktop system.
After I noticed the issue with memory I also installed in that order
 ·firmware-realtek for the ethernet controller
(The controller does work without it, possibly not at full speed, but it
works fast enough for my connection)
 ·amd64-microcode for the CPU

But this does not seem to have made any difference. Beside these 3 package the

Bluez (but send the bug report to Raspbian, not Debian). The

Nothing to see here, but a good baseline.

> afirefox: After using an affected Firefox profile

Ok, let's breakdown it (left is aboot, right is afirefox).
Here we see about 2Gb of memory consumed:

MemFree:32124660 kB / MemFree:30144704 kB

Such discrepancy can be attributed, first, to the difference in Active
and Inactive memory pages:

  Active: 216940 kB / 766788 kB
  Inactive: 178292 kB / 676072 kB

With the most contribution is given by file-backed memory pages (i.e.
filesystem cache):

  Active(file): 94220 kB / 589536 kB
  Inactive(file): 167528 kB / 665180 kB

Which gives us 992988 kB difference of 1979956 kB.

And we see some miniscule tmpfs usage (54532 kB):

Active(anon): 122720 kB / Active(anon): 177252 kB
Inactive(anon):10892 kB / Inactive(anon):10764 kB

Second, assorted kernel structures (KReclaim - WritebackTmp per meminfo)
give us 155694 kB.

Third, assorted processes (AnonPages + Mapped + AnonHugePages) give us
another 108360 kB.

Summing it up, it gives us 668382 kB of discrepancy. Note that both htop
and free blatantly lied about actual memory usage, sweetening the deal
for about 350M.

Too lazy to write it up, I leave it as an exercise to another reader.

So the big question is - where 650M of memory gone? My money is on
kernel modules. Maybe it's Intel's VideoRAM steal (don't know if AMD do
it the same way). Maybe it's some proprietary kernel module.

I know no way of accounting memory usage of kernel module, but I can
spot some possible candidates from "lsmod" output.

Unknown Package name

2020-03-29 Thread david.donnelly
Good Day,
Yesterday (28 Mar 2020), I updated my Raspberry Pi 4 running Raspbian
Buster and only three files were installed:

bluez
libbluetooth3
libicu63

Prior to these files being installed, both my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse
functioned normally. Once the three files were installed and the system
rebooted, the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse stopped working.

I am able to repeat the problem. Hence and have confirmed others are having
this issue.

I am trying to submit a bug report - but as a novice, I do not know what
"package" to report in the ReportBug program.

Your help pls.

Sure, you can get that. A transmitter/receiver pair will cost
about $250, and you'll need to make sure your cellphone has an
HDMI out. Most don't. Some do, via an MHL-HDMI cable.

I have saved the output of slabtop and /proc/meminfo for:
aboot: Directly after booting and logging into a graphical i3-session
afirefox: After using an affected Firefox profile
afill-alloc: After afirefox and running a simple C program that allocates
almost all of the total physical memory
afill-alloc+swaponoff: After afill-alloc and swapoff and swapon.
In all cases only some daemons, X-Server, i3 and one or two terminals were
running.
htop and free were reporting memory usage as around 450MiB for aboot and
afill-*
and around 1,3GiB for afirefox.

I've read the part about meminfo here
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt
but I'm not experienced enough to tell if anything/what in the meminfo output
is unusual.
For reference: htop calculates the memory usage from /proc/meminfo like this:
Cached memory = Cached + SReclaimable - Shmem
  Non cache/buffer memory = MemTotal - MemFree - (Buffers + 'Cached memory')
  Swap= SwapTotal - SwapFree

As they are rather lengthy and there are 4 of them, I attached the output of
the
commands to this email. According to the mailing list guidelines large
attachments should be avoided, but since they are in total 68K and compressed
just 8K this should probably be fine.
If the attachment doesn't work I can resend it in the mail body.

When I did the upgrade (the big one after 4 months) apt-listbugs
warned about a number of bugs and I felt safer to pin those packages.

Thank you, this was not obvious to me. I now deleted the pins from
/etc/apt/preferences.d/apt-listbugs and rerun update+upgrade and that
seems to have fixed my problems.

You refer to my apt policy I assume and/or my apt sources list? I
would be happy to simplify it. In my sources.list I now only have
unstable:

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib

For my apt preferences I had:

Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 650

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 600

To be honest back in the day when I did that, I struggled to really
understand it. My intention was to have the system take packages from
unstable and if a package is not available there then from testing.
Does it even do that?
Thank you a lot for your help!

Re: cracking sound from left channel

Dear Dan,

I came across a website which said to use the index parameter
Hence I create this in /etc/modprobe.d/snd_amd.conf
with content

options snd_hda_intel power_save=1 index=1,0

The sound is infintely better now and there is no more fluttering
sound and no leaking of right channel into left which had caused the
distructive interference like audio.
Thanks

Hi there,

On Sat, 28 Mar 2020, Alan Tu wrote:

After one to four times of this, eventually network-manager

It seems to me that network-manager is only really useful for people
with no more knowledge of their network configuration than the average
Windows user. If you have already configured your network connections
I guess that you know more about your networks than that (very likely
more than the authors of network-manager too). Therefore it can do
little but harm to allow network-manager to get itself involved.

My networks tend to be slightly more complex than most, but it is only
slightly. Even so, I have yet to find network-manager does anything
except cause trouble. I see much ire directed toward systemd but IMHO
network-manager deserves more. For probably the past decade it's been
the amongst the first things that I'll purge from a freshly installed
Debian system.

Seting up a simple network really isn't at all difficult. You have to
pick sane IP addresses and network masks for your interfaces, script
them and a few routes, and perhaps load a module or two to get the
interfaces running if that doesn't happen by default in the gargantuan
Debian kernels. Wireless networks can be a bit more complex but every
operation is a simple one-liner, and, for twenty-five years, even in
the most complex networks that I've worked with, I don't think I've
ever needed more than a dozen lines in rc.local to set up networking
for any of a couple of hundred machines. It's _much_ easier to learn
how to set up your network than it is to find out what network-manager
has done to screw things up; and when you have that basic knowledge
under your belt it's a great deal easier to find out what's gone wrong
when it does (for example when you rashly type 'apt-get dist-upgrade'
which the past three or four times has, each time I've done it, broken
increasingly badly most systems that I've done it to - apparently many
and misguided attempts to solve problems I've never actually had).

According to my Play Store library I was using BubbleUPnP.

With it I can "share" videos from the YouTube app on my phone to have
them play on my Android box. It works also to play stuff from the phone
on the TV.

Unfortunately with Kodi as destination the audio is not in sync, if I
use the box's built-in DLNA support it's much better.

As far as I know / understand none of the major streaming services (HBO
GO, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.) have support for DLNA, only Google

Exactly. If needed you can of course install them system wide, but
somewhere in /usr/local for example so they don't overlap with existing
structure for Debian packages. But see dh-make-ruby first if you'd like
to go this way.

Looks good, but since I don't use ruby I can't tell you exactly.

That's what I would do. However the second option is more complicated. A
dependency of a package will be installed even if you would like to have
more recent gem. Which mean that you might end up in a situation where
the same rubygem comes from Debian and locally as more up-to-date
version. But in this case the local version should have higher
precedence for local projects.

Ruby also provides rvm - Ruby Version Manager, in some cases it totally
make sense to start with a self-contained envs. After all it all depends
on what you'd like to do, but using sudo to overwrite modules in system
locations is plain wrong in my opinion and breaks the system.

There are many packages using ruby and it's modules, so if a software
package depends on some ruby gems, they need to be packaged too.
But that's the cool thing about Debian and binary packages, one can
simply run apt-get install to get a complicated software installed.

So you have a multiarch (amd64 and i386) system, with amd64 repositories
for Skype and Docker.

Why do you need i386? I'm guessing you might have some locally installed
packages as well. Please show also the output of

aptitude search '~o'
aptitude search '~b'

Why did you add these pins?

Pins are not holds...

Your system is a... complex mixture that is very easy to break.

Since this is a Debian list I would recommend some single board computer
with Kodi.

This will involve finding a supported SBC, installing Debian, installing
supporting apps on the smartphone(s) and hope it all works nicely
together.

The non-Debian alternative would be to use a Google Chromecast.

Gmail returned exactly zero rows (there should've been headers before
"IMAP< )").
Whichever is broken is broken on their side, not yours.

No surprise it bailed on attempt to retrieve mail body.

I see three options here:

1) Try using POP3 instead of IMAP.

2) Replace fetchmail with getmail.

3) Make a forward to your gmx mailbox from gmail.

Casting handlheld devices on non-smart TV

2020-03-29 Thread john doe
Debians,

I would like to cast the sound and image of my smartphone and alike
devices to my old TV.

My wireless cellphones and tablets are connected in wifi to my network
but my TV is not connected to my network (too old), so I'm looking for a
way to bridge the two together.

Do you have any recommendation on what fanless hardware and software I
could use to do that?

Can you use imap with another client? (mutt/thunderbird). It seems, that
gmail let you to logi, get message list, but then is timeout at first
message body. I'd ask gmail help now.

If I followed correctly, you're trying to access gmail at
the "traditional" imap port (that's 143). There is nobody
there answering the calls. Try imaps (i.e. 993), either through
fetchmail's option "-P 993" or "--service imaps".

Perhaps you'll have to play with options --ssl (and possibly
with --sslproto, although that's improbable). See manpage.

And, oh, I agree with the others. Try to avoid Google as
your mail provider.

with gmail you have to select "allow non-conforming clients" or

I had problems with fetchmail and gmail ( forget what exactly) so
