I haven't burned a CD/DVD/BD in some time now, I always use a USB drive
nowadays but when I did, I used K3b or wodim from the command line.

Everything in debian has source available, so no, it can't be done

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I have to load the snd_pcm_oss

familiar with bplay but maybe it needs those modules too.

Christian Marrilat is a debian developer and works on a number of

I had a look in the project directory and the latest file is dated May
8, 2012. Looks a bit stale. I'd use one of the mirrors listed at
deb-multimedia.org.

You can add deb-multimedia.. my sources.list entry..

deb http://mirrors.ece.ubc.ca/deb-multimedia/ wheezy main non-free

I also use this to install and keep java updated. update-sun-jre is the
package that's needed.

deb http://www.duinsoft.nl/pkg debs all

Have a look at http://deb-multimedia.org and http://www.duinsoft.nl and
understand what you are doing before adding anything to sources.list.

Packagekit is not installed here, but if you look it up in aptitude and
have a look at the packages that depend on it you may be able to see
why it is installed.

Looking at the depends I see that gnome-core depends on it so if your
desktop is gnome that might be why although I haven't used gnome
myself for some time so I can't say for sure.

I just noticed I don't have a CD slider either although I used to have
one. I haven't looked for a long time so I'm not sure when it
disappeared but I can play CD's with vlc and they play as always.

I'm not sure what the problem could be.

That's possible. I had problems with sound when pulseaudio was
installed by recommends at one time. I removed pulseaudio and all was
well again. On my current setup with xfce there is no puleaudio and I
have no problems with sound.

libpulse0 and libpulse-mainloop-glib0 are installed but all is well.

I'm not familiar with workbone but try loading snd_pcm_oss and
snd_mixer_oss with modprobe as root (or use sudo).

Eg. "modprobe snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss"

I use these modules for mp3blaster.

Yes! I've been trying different settings and rebooting and this seems
to work as expected.

The only thing I have noticed is that my jessie/sid entry in grub.cfg
doesn't get the "GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep" setting for some reason.

I would try vga=794 first. The difference is that 775 should give you a
1280x1024 x 256 color depth while 794 will give you 1280x1024 x 65k
colors.

The GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x1024 is the way to go now but when I use it I get
slow screen writes whereas vga=794 seems to work well here. I don't
know why that is I'll need to figure it out soon I think.

Not that I know of, just keep trying till it works the way you want it
to.

If you run dkpg-reconfigure console-setup and go through and don't make
any changes you can see what font and size you have now.

There may be a command to query what your console setup is, but I don't
know.

My desktop looks like it always has. Maybe you can adjust the
anti-aliasing or hinting of fonts on your desktop.

When using the nvidia driver I have always used vga=794 on my kernel
command line and I get good response time. I have tried the new
"gfxmode=" way of doing it but I find I have slow a terminal then. I do
need to experiment more with that though.

I also run "dpkg-reconfigure console-setup" and choose the "vga" font
which is what the kernel used to use by default IINM. I'm not sure why
the default font was changed but i think it supports more languages now
so the vga font may not work for everyone.

Did you use nvidia-xconfig to create your xorg.conf? The debian
packaged nvidia driver works well for me.

I can confirm it works on sid and I suspect it works on wheezy too.
You need to have multiarch enabled as mentioned in this thread and do
"sudo apt-get install libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386".

I'm not sure if all the bugs are worked out yet but I can run my old
32bit apps.. :)

32bit apps under amd64 and nvidia

2013-05-25 Thread Alan Ianson
I just installed wheezy on an amd64 machine and am trying to run a
32bit program but it doesn't run. I'm using the stock amd64 kernel and
the debian packaged nvidia drivers. I used to install an ia32 (or
somesuch) nvidia package to run 32 bit programs on amd64 with good
results but wheezy is multiarch and I'm not sure how to proceed.

TIA for any pointers.. :)

It's been a while since I installed it, but I seem to remember seeing
the same thing. IIRC I ran aptitude and used the resolver and it
suggested that I install a few i386 packages which I did and everything
has been running nicely since.

I switched to xfce when kde changed the whole desktop in kde4. I used
gnome for a time as well and wouldn't you know it, they changed the
whole desktop too! Both kde and gnome made changes I just didn't like
so now I use xfce and am quite happy with it.

I don't know why the Debian 7 GNU/kFreeBSD disks are using xfce by
default since I have never used it. I always install a basic system
then go from there.

It's not as simple for sure, but jigdo is not that hard to use and a
very useful software if you need to work with images for any reason.

Just try it and if you have questions we'll gladly help.

If you are just installing on your own box a netinst or cd/dvd 1 will
be enough to get you going.

I see live images now as well so choose your poison.. ;)

There are things to like and things not to like, like any distro.

[like]
It's a rolling release, you always have the latest kernel, firefox etc..
[/like]

[dislike]
when you boot the live system (installer, if you can call it that) you
have network access and can download and install your base system. When
you boot your new system you don't (at least I don't) and you have to
tweak it yourself. Easy enough to do but it's likely different than
what you have and you will need to read up on how to get it going. Hard
to do if you don't have another machine.
[/dislike]

I could go on but...

I use debian myself but just like to look around at other distros when
I have the time.

I use vga=791 on my kernel command line. I think that is, or soon will
be depreciated but I find that method gives me what I want as far as
the terminal goes.

GRUB_GFXMODE=x in grub.cfg is the way to configure it now but I
haven't found a setting that suits me, yet.

My version of the flashplugin is 10.3 d162.

Try running "update-flashplugin-nonfree --install" and see if you get a
newer version. That command did nothing on my box but maybe that is
because I have the newest version. Let us know.

I'm not sure why but those are off by default now and there is no easy
way to set it now (that I know of).

I turn them on by running gconf2 or the configuration editor and
navigating to Desktop -> Gnome - Interface and checking
"buttons_have_icons" and "menus_have_icons".

Are all those entries really for the first partition on your first

to boot from your first hard drive.

Aptitude installs recommends by default. That can be turned off in
"Options -> Preferences -> Dependency handling -> Install recommended
packages automatically".

I have never turned the option off myself so I'm not sure if it'll do
what you need but you could try if you haven't already.

Re: failure of gnome baker

Francesco Pietra wrote:

In my updated debian i386 sqeeze/gnome and debian amd64 lenny/gnome i
have no more workable cd-dvd burners. Gnome-baker reports burning (CD

fine for both CD and DVD data disks. However, installation of k3b

apt-get update
apt-get install k3b

brought other problems in:

--command "k3b" also started the viewer VMD, which had to be closed
twice in order that k3b could be used.

RedHat window was brought in instead.

I liked gnome for years, and I use certain gnome-specific scientific
applications, such as GChempain. However I notice now that KDE has a
much more versatile burner (k3b), even if gnome baker could be used.
Also the pdf viewer "okular" (better that Adobe for certain scientific
uses) is part of KDE and alleviated from having to install Adobe. I
believe that gnome developers should consider these observations.
Lukily, okular can be used without problems even in gnome.

I use k3b in gnome under squeeze because it has features I need at
times. You'll need to install a whack of kde depends along with it if
you don't have something kde installed already but it works, at least
for me. I have a few kde apps installed that I can't find gnome
equivalents for and they work well.

I've often thought that gnome could use a better or more full featured
burning app. I rarely burn cd's any more so brasero may be a solution to
but I haven't needed to use it so I can't say from experience.

I have not experienced any downtime with squeeze or sid. At times there are
bugs that are usually minor. There isn't much to do but wait for the package
to be updated. That doesn't take long usually, in sid packages can be updated
frequently. Packages have to live in sid for 10 days without rc bugs in order
to move into testing so the software in squeeze has had some testing and it
will take longer for buggy packages to be fixed and make the transition to
testing.

If anything is going to happen it will happen in testing/unstable so buyer
beware ;)

Yes, that's the main thing. If the ports aren't open... nothing is going
to happen.. :)

Yes, nowadays I use transmission and it only needs one port. You can
check in the settings if the port is open or not so there is no
guessing.

That sounds right for a classic bittorrent client. I used to open about
the same ports years ago with the first bittorrent client from Bram
Cohen when that was all there was.. :)

That does seem a bit low but if your downloading ISO's there may be a
lot of seeds (clients who have the whole download) compared to leeches
(clients who don't have the whole download yet). In that case uploading
will be a bit slow. That won't happen with all .torrents. :)

Just leave the torrent running (seeding) after it's done so others can
get the file also is a good bittorrent citizen.

I have been wanting to try and stop this too but haven't had a chance to
look into it. I want the screen resolution to honour the setting from
grub but at some point it blanks and changes to 1024x768 during boot-up.
I don't mind that at times but when I am reading I prefer 800x600 as is
set in grub.cfg.

curiouser and curiouser. I started a new .odt.. a very simple text entry
and saved. When I reopened it the cursor was at the end of the file
where I saved.

I started writer from the quick starter but I don't imagine that would
have anything to do with it..

I'm not sure what the difference is.. I don't have kde installed so I
can't try it.

The openoffice.org-gnome integration package does include a quick
starter that is in the systray. I have used openoffice.org-gnome on kde
before instead of openoffice.org-kde and I had a quick starter in the
kde systray.

I just installed it on squeeze last night so I haven't had much of a chance to
use it yet but it looks good to me. Haven't noticed anything in the way of a
trade-off. Everything I use seems to be here, k3b, krusader, amarok, kid3,
k9copy..

The only difference I have noted so far is that I can't right click the
message and folder view areas of kmail to change the columns, and the "K" in
kde in the logon splash is changed to a "T" for trinity I guess. Functionally
it seems to be much the same as kde 3.5.? always has. I'm impressed.

That was my plan too.. may not be needed anymore. You'll have to take a look
for yourself though.. :)

I installed mine with a net install image following the instructions I found
here..

http://blogs.koolwal.net/2009/02/25/installing-linux-on-usb-part-7-install-debian-linux-from-usb-drive/

I'm sure there are more ways to do it but that worked for me.

One thing I noticed was that the installer scans the hard drives looking for
an iso to use for the install. In my case it found one and it would have been
good to use but it was located on a drive I wanted to mount at /usr/local so
the install wouldn't proceed. If you have iso images you don't want the
installer to find you might want to rename them before you proceed.

I've had that happen to me once or twice and sometime after all works as
expected..

You could also try booting the installer from a USB stick if the CD can't be
made to work. That's generally what I do these days rather than messing with
CDs

This can happen in sid from time to time. It'll likely disappear in a day or
three. I just wait it out if that happens. In most cases it clears up in a
day but it can take longer at times.

I'm running sid ATM, and I do it the same way. This always worked as
expected when I was using the nvidia driver with my nvidia card. Since
my nvidia card died I can't switch to a console or my monitor goes off.
Right now I'm using the onboard radeon x1200 series video output on this
box with "ati" or "radeon" specified in a minimal xorg.conf.

I'll be back to nvidia ASAP, but I do hope this can be sorted before
squeeze is released.

I get bad results with ubuntu as well with the ati output on this box
whereas the nvidia card always worked well.

In my case the consoles work as expected at boot up and I can use them,
but after some period of time after I have been using the desktop when I
press F? my monitor goes off and when I switch back to the
desktop it comes on again.

I'm using "ati" in my xorg.conf with the built in video output on this
box. If I don't use "ati" in the driver section of my xorg.conf the
monitor goes off at almost anytime, desktop or console.

I have been using "ati" in xorg.conf because that is what I have been
using for the built in video port or else weird things happen, but I'll
try without with this card plugged in and see.

If I can't sort it I'll post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log in a

Thanks for the info, I changed it to radeon, still no 3D acceleration
though and glxgears gives me a segmentation fault.. maybe there is a bug

xorg.conf -- nvidia to ati

2010-06-24 Thread Alan Ianson
Hi List!

My nvidia card bit the dust and I was given an "ATI Technologies Inc
RV370 [Radeon X300SE]" as a loaner. It runs fine and everything looks
good on the desktop, but when I run an app that requires 3D acceleration
everything seems to run slowly.

I have been using a minimal xorg.conf that simply loads the nvidia
driver and that worked well for the nvidia card. I changed "nvidia" to
"ati" in xorg.conf and the desktop comes up OK but 3D acceleration
doesn't seem to work.

Any ideas on what I need to change?

It's probably the ipv6 thing as Eduardo suggests. ATM I have a new
install of sid and I forgot all about that.

I rarely if ever use java apps, so it doesn't bug me.

I get the same results here, and accessing a site that requires the
plugin doesn't work. The page appears but the applet doesn't start for
reasons unknown.

A bug in the plug-in maybe??

That's right. I had to move to either kopete or pidgin (or both, I
forget now)from backports after some changes to the protocol after the
release of lenny. It did work fine at the time of release.

Yes, the security lines in my /etc/apt/sources.list looks like this.

deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free

deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free

The deb-src line wrapped, it should all be on one line.

There is security support for testing (Squeeze) also, although most
fixes transition from unstable. The security team does upload security
fixes for testing if the need arises though.

Use the same info for sources.list but replace lenny with squeeze.

Yes, the mirrors contain oldstable (etch), stable (lenny), testing
(squeeze), and unstable (sid). One mirror should do for any of those.

Shouldn't be a problem since popularity has been using http by default for
some time now.

I'm not sure why it's trying to use email. AFAIK, mine has been using http and
I don't see any mention of sur...@popcon.debian.org in exim's logs.

Run "dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config" and set it up to use a smarthost, your
usual email smtp address will probably be ok.

That I don't know.

I'm not sure what you mean. What is an "extra" iso?

You mean the full set of CD or DVD images? I find a net install works best
nowadays. Then you just download and install packages as you want to.

The archive is simply huge now so it's a lot to download and burn unless you
have machines that are not connected to the net that you want to install or
update.

If you want the latest I'd run either testing or unstable. I have both stable

I don't think there is a "better" way. I use either method. If it is a new
install (for whatever reason) I do a new install, but if I want to upgrade a
current install I upgrade. Be sure to read the release notes of the new
version before proceeding though.

I don't know how well the upgrade from lenny to squeeze is tested ATM though.
By release time it should be well documented and work as expected but we are
not there yet.

Yes, that is on my radar too. It looks to be for ubuntu but I am not sure of
their goals. I'm kind of hoping for kde3 that can be developed and used as
always for anyone interested and any distribution.

I suppose I am hoping for a lot.. :)

If there was enough interest, kde3 could continue to be developed as it's own
project.

I would support the project but I can't contribute anything more than bug
reports since I am just a user and not a programmer.

We are in agreement here Lisi. It's not that I don't like kde4 it's just that
I'd like to keep what I have since it does just what I want/need it to do and
kde4 is such a big change.

We I'm running lenny like now I use kde3 and am so very happy with it. When
I'm running squeeze or sid I run Gnome. I like Gnome but it's just not the
same. I wish I could upgrade to squeeze without losing kde3, or that
upgrading to kde4 wasn't such a radical change.

I don't know for sure what to to when squeeze is released, I'll probably hang
on to lenny for as long as it's feasible.

All the stuff at debian-multimedia can't be included in debian for
various reasons, mostly freedom I think, so you won't find it in debian
at all. It's made for debian but it isn't debian.

I started using d-mm.o from the reply to a question I posted in this

same way.

I just read this in the FAQ at debian-multimedia.org..

"Q.How to report bug ?

A. If the bug is related to packaging you can send me a bug report,
otherwise the best is to contact the upstream author."

I misspelled his name, it should be Christian Marillat. His email is

Yes, that's the one I use. There is progress with java in Epiphany. The
java test page...

http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1

does work as expected now where it didn't a short time ago. I'm happy
with the way Epiphany works now myself, but my gf likes to play games at
pogo.com and that website complains that the plugin isn't installed even
though it is, and I hear grumbling about that on a regular basis.. :)

I'm not certain but the devs must feel it's a good strategy for the

I've noticed the same things. I've stuck with epiphany because it worked
so well for so long but there are times recently when I need to use
iceweasel. I think it's the switch from the gecko backend to webkit that
broke a lot of things that used to work well.

I keep hoping that these problems can be resolved but time will tell. I
use unstable and downloading works fine but java apps that use the
plugin still don't work.

I have an older program here too that needs libstdc++5 to run. There is
no such thing in squeeze so I install that package from lenny and that
old app runs fine.

I use pidgin and transmission from backports on my lenny install. In the
case of pidgin, the msn protocol has changed recently and broke the
version in lenny (just where msn is concerned).

Backports has come in handy for me a few times in the past.

If the box is working the way it should I don't think it would be a
problem. Personally I like to keep my testing install up to date but if
you want to put it off for a time I don't think it would hurt anything,
keep an eye out for security updates though.

It would be a big update after a month though.. :)

There is a package called grub2-splashimages that contains background
images. I use it here and grub2 looks about the same as grub always did
although the configuration is different.

I don't use kde anymore so I'm going from memory.. As someone else said
you need gtk-qt-engine. Once that is installed there is a setting in
kde's setup where you can set gnome apps to use the style qt-curve (you
need to install that too), then they look very much like they do in
gnome. There are other styles too but I never tried them.

Gnome's browser epiphany comes to mind, it's also based on firefox IIRC.
Also have a look at galeon if you need an alternate.

I don't think opera needs to be registered any more, haven't looked at
it in a while though. There are debs for it at the opera website, it can
be added to sources.list and installed with apt-get or aptitude &
friends also. Not a bad browser too if you need another.

Pine is what I used many moons ago for mail & news. I suppose it might
be a bit old school now but it does work wonderfully. Good if you want a
console mail & news app. There is also tin for newsgroups, also maybe
old school but works well.

Add debian-multimedia to your /etc/apt/sources.list. More info can be
found at http://debian-multimedia.org .

Indeed, there doesn't seem to be much choice. I have installed both the
lacie and the app from lightscribe and they both work as expected on
debian.
