Re: D-Link DFE-530-TX NIC install probs.

2001-03-13 Thread Alexander Gutfraind \(Sasha\)

There is a peculiar problem with this card:
I believe its ID has changed, and hence the driver
included in 2.2.X kernel does not work with it any longer.
You need to upgrade to 2.4.2-ac series kernel.

More details are available:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-0103/msg00507.html

Although I am a linux newbie, and not quite sure the
card works correctly for me with 2.4.2-ac16 kernel,
looking though the patch, I am certain that the driver
has been modified.

Hope it helps.

sasha.

(2.2.17 or 2.4.2) to the harddrive.

compiling the kernel

2001-03-09 Thread Alexander Gutfraind \(Sasha\)

A newbie question:
1) What's System map file, and where is it created
relative to the kernel source directory during
kernel compilation?

2) (perhaps related to (1) above)
Wheneve I try creating a boot floppy,
using 'installkernel ', I get a problem
as follows:

Creating a lilo bootdisk...
mkdir /tmp/boot7403mke2fs -q /dev/fd0mke2fs
1.19, 13-Jul-2000 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /tmp/boot7403cd
/tmp/boot7403cp
/boot/vmlinuz
/boot/boot.b
.lilo -C - -EOF2Fatal: geo_comp_addr:
Cylinder number is too big (1053 1023)
set +e; cd /; umount /dev/fd0; rmdir /tmp/boot7403
There was a problem creating the boot diskette.
Please make sure that you inserted the diskette into the
correct drive and that the disketteis not write-protected.

[End of printout]
(I opened the file in win98 notepad, which does not read \n correctly.
Had to add newlines myself)

What's the deal???

3) In windows there is the idea of formating a partition
or a floppy. Debian installation seem to do something similar.
How does it work in Linux, and what is the utility that does it?

4) When compiling the kernel, does moving functionality into
modules reduces performance, and if so, is it worth cutting
the size of the kernel image?

Thanks a lot!

LinuxDos assmebler

1999-03-06 Thread Alexander Gutfraind
Hello fellows!
I was thinking about learning assembler, but there is a
problem.
I heard about DOS interrupts, which I guess work only in
DOS.
Which I guess means that if I buy a book about x86
assembler,
and it speak a lot about that interrupt things,
I have a fair chance it wouldn't work in Linux, is that
right?
Maybe in that case, there are Linux x86 assembler books?

Another question: How assembler works in the secure Linux
environment?
Linux checks that calls are not a threat to the system?

bugs and bug reports

1998-09-30 Thread Alexander Gutfraind
Hello fellow users!

I was just scanning the new packages and wondered:

How are bugs cathegorized, numbered and bug reports
submitted?
Most bug fixes are around bug #26600, does it mean that
26600 is the total number
of bugs discovered in all packages?
I this case, When did the count started?

I know that debian has a powerful system of bug reporting,
but for that one needs to find
the general location of the bug and reproduce it.
What tools does one have to locate the bug (system
bug/program bug/shell bug)?
can one monitor each program's access to files, memory, and
other resources?

Re: a basic kernel //or rather simply an old one

1998-09-19 Thread Alexander Gutfraind
Hello again!
Thanks for the support.

let me more specific:
I want to play with the kernel, and really understand how it works.
I think that the best way to do that is to read the sunsite docs, and play
with an older kernel that wasn't as complex as the new ones.

I need the oldest posible kernel, that have simply
the ability to be installed in the first place without too much
tech-knowledge
required to start. it possibly means support for ext2, ?compatible? lilo,
and most of all, a debian distribution.

where can I find antique distributions?

You shouldn't need to touch the makefiles at all. Just do `make config'
and work your way through the questions. If you press `?' you get an
explanation of what each option means. Then do `make dep. and
`make clean. and `make zImage' and it should all go off by itself.

so, I basicallly have:
AMD k6 200MHZ,
32 meg ram,
6.4meg HD with 900M unpartitioned space for experimenting...

I guees I can builduse that kernel on the same EXT2

but I need a kernel with EXT2 support, and I heard that the
earliest ones used minix fs.
a URL with old debian distributions (0.9.., 1.1..) will be
helpful, so that I can install some tools for playing

bind is what makes DNS servers get used for lookups. Without it DNS servers

 /etc/hosts, then
 DNS.

Hello again!
Thanks for the reply.
The reason I asked about a list of packages is because I'm pretty new to
Debian, and to Linux,
and I simply didn't want to downloadinstall packages that I don't need.
The list devided into required, followed by important, and then by standard
etc. might provide the answer .
When one installs a new system, dselect (ftp) proposes him to download a range
of packs in these categories,
and it's a good idea.
I hope your script will provide the answer. Attach it, will you?
A newbie question: How to run the/a script, just to type the name at script's
path?
Thanks again.

I missed the beginning of this tread, but my 2 cents:

The Debian Cdrom I have comes with a file with a list of packages.
It is called packages or Packages. The file contains a longish
description of each package, including priority, type (editor, shell,
x11, etc). I copied this package to hard disk, and wrote a perl
script that would print on each line the name, the priority,
the type, and length. I then could sort on each field to produce
files sorted by name, priority, etc.

I wrote lots of other scripts too. If anyone is interested, email me.

I prefer to install packages with scripts rather than on the fly with
 a GUI application.

However the lists have grown too large. I receive about 80

Wouldn't it be better if would split the lists to, for

I'd

There are scsi CD-R drives for around $400 or so, and the HP T4

CD-R seems a better route, with the low media costs, and that most
cd-roms can read my backups. Retrieval would also be considerably
faster.

But, I read a long FAQ about CD-R, and the Linux Cd-writing howto, and
CD burning makes me nervous because it's so sensitive. I'm worried
cd
backups may fail, and my computer is probably pretty useless while
I'm
burning. One 4 gig Travan-4 tape would pretty much do me, and
the
process is a bit simpler. Plus, I don't think there's too much
of a
difference in write speed for CD-R and scsi Travan-4.

Can anyone offer any suggestions? Perhaps a link to a backup
comparison site or something? (Since this topic has probably
been
beaten to death!).

Thanks!
Matt

update system malfunctions

1998-06-27 Thread Alexander Gutfraind
Hello debian users!
my problem description is as follows:
I couldn't wait for the beta and the 2.00.34 kernel and the
fixed hamm packs that came with it.
so I installed the base system and 2.00.33, and started
DLding packages. No, said dselect,
you need newer base system to run many of the packs. Ok, I
got a newer rescue, drivers, and
base2_0.tgz . I've loaded the rescue disk and simply
selected the devices, installed the kernel
and the base and created a boot disk as was adviced (and
created a default boot manager).
On reboot, I got a nice LI
When I tried to use the boot disk after a reboot, it simply
took milenia to load (much longer than
it takes usually, and seemed to halt completely), so I had
to reset.
Now, I did the rescue process all over as before, used the
custom boot disk and real problems
began.
First of all, I was asked to set a root password. I tried
all the posible passwords, it agreed
and wrote them to disk! but then asked me to write another
one. I simply couldn't exit
passwd and started another VT, I killed the original VT,
and from the new VT started passwd
and it worked.
After a reboot I discovered that the system logins
automatically as root!
But that's not all: Programs are missing files, sometimes
only minor like readme 's,
daemons are not loaded etc. looks like a filesystem failure.

What's my next move? Is it a bug? Is it something I did
wrong?
By the way, what is the passwords file?
