Do you really believe this? The following citation is from 'science'
fortune file, which is NOT in fortune-offensive:

Thus mathematics may be defined as the subject in which we never know
what we are talking about, nor whether what we are saying is true.

My speciality is mathematics and I find this citation extremely
offensive.

One more example ("definitions" file now):

Basic Definitions of Science:
If it's green or wiggles, it's biology.
If it stinks, it's chemistry.
If it doesn't work, it's physics.

Very offensive, isn't it?

Yep. My religion doesn't allow me to have on my box anything
emacs-related (= *emacs + packages with the sole purpose of supporting
*emacs). Now gettext *depends* on gettext-el.

I'm very offended by this.

This was not a joke.

P.S. It is the place where we have *true* racism. This dependence is a
spit in the faces of non-emacs people. [This was a joke.]

The -p and -P options override the port numbers used by
the daemon. Normally, the daemon determines the port num-

If there is no /etc/services entry for "ftp-data" and the
-P option is not specified, the daemon uses the port just
prior to the control connection port. The -p option is

It tries to execute command rm[space]/home/shao/report/main.log. Of course
there is no such command. You should execute 'rm' with filename as a parameter;
so write

rm '{}' ';'

I have no idea why kmod doesn't insmod your modules automagically.
But ne2k-pci depends on 8390 module; so try modprobe instead of insmod.

I have Realtec8029 NIC right now in my computer; and ne2k-pci is compiled as a

You may assign real IPs to firewall and to your server. Of course, you will
need to different IPs. The more secure way is to assign private IP to your
server and implement masquerading. Of course, it will take more efforts to
tune :)

I use at home firewall with real IP at 486 (well, it's FreeBSD-based, but it
doesn't matter) and 192.168.1.0 net for all my home network.

Do you have /dev/pts/ filesystem? I suspect you don't.

22:16:53 pepper:~$ mount

devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620) <- THIS ONE

Programs started from x terminal use /dev/pts/ as their controlling

Win95 as a terminal

1998-05-12 Thread Alexey Vyskubov

Hello!

I had the following strange problem:

I use Linux/Debian 2.0 on my computer.
There is null-modem cable from ttyS1 to Win95 computer.
Some times ago Win 95/Telemate works fine as a terminal, but now it takes
about 30 minutes just to display /etc/issue. (Output is blocked in 16-bytes
sequences). I use the following configuration: RTS/CTS on both ends,

s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/uugettyps ttyS1 DT38400 linux

in inittab.
Do not see on DT38400, I tried different things there.

Where is the problem?

Thanks.

AfterStep

Where is configuration files for afterstep_1.4.5.3-1???

My ~/GNUstep doesn't work now.
Moreover, there is no /usr/share/GNUstep.

In /usr/doc/afterstep/README.debian :

``Added support for either ~/GNUstep (highly recommended)
installations or /usr/share/GNUstep. To get ~/GNUstep
set up, type "cp -a /usr/share/GNUstep ~" and afterstep
will adjust accordingly the next time the executable is run.''

And now my configuration for afterstep 1.4 doesn't work and I do not know
how can I set up my preferences.

VERY ANNOYING!

What do you want to change?

You want to see the whole screen after changing resolution to lower one?
No way. You cannot put e.g. 1024 points in 640 :)

You want fixed screen after resolution change?
Comment "Virtual" statements in /etc/X11/XF86Config.

WYSIWYG SGML editor is nonsense. Because SGML do structure markup. How it will
look depends on the filter you use to convert SGML to some other format.

Why you cannot use text editor for editing SGML document and Qweb for viewing it
in the same time?

I use TEI Lite DTD dor SGML document and suite of programs (TEItools) for
converting TEI-based documents in html/rtf/tex/text/pdf.

TEItools also include CGI-script which allows you browse TEI-based SGML
documents with any Web-browser. (http://xtalk.price.ru/TEItools)

RealPlayer problem

Hello.

I have the following problem.

I'm tryin to use Netscape Communicator 4.5 (using Debian package) with
RealPlayer 5.0 (using Debian package).

Well, Netscape works, and
rvplayer /usr/doc/rvplaer/examples/welcome.rm
works too.
But when I try to look at welcome.rm with Netscape (using my local Apache
server), I receive the following message:
"File compression not cupported. Cannot locate the requested RealAudio
Decoder."
although plug-in starts in Netscape window. No video no audio of course.

Where is the problem?

I use Debian 2.0.
Thanks.

There is glibc2 version of Communicator 4.06. I use it.
If you have only libc5 version, install netscape4 package.
This one tells you about old libraries you have to install (from /oldlibs dir)

Remount your root partition in a read-write mode.

It seems xv canot grab root window. When I have to grab root window, I use to
start _two_ X (:0 and :1), run xtv at display :1 with option -d :0 and grab
xtv window (which contains root window at :0) with xv.

Is there a way to grab root window without such sophisticated procedure?

The second is xruskb. You can find it in Debian as a package.

Well, with Xkb you use keysyms such as Cyrillic_de or Cyrillic_zhe.
With xmodmap (as a rule!) you use keysyms such as Ediaresis & Co. And it's
not _russian_ characters. It's hack. You give the koi8-r font to the
application and it looks for you as a russian letters. But *they do not*.

Well, but - if you use Xkb - the right tuned locale can help some application
(E.g. Netscape) handle all that Cyrillic_*. W/o russian locale and with Xkb
you cannot enter russian letters in Netscape.

> FYI, RH 5(.1) glibc come with russian koi8 locale which is called ru_SU.

Well, why ru_RU.koi8r isn't right? *ru*ssian language in *RU*ssia with koi8r
charset. But there is not such thing as a "Soviet Union". Or it's "South Ural" -
as in Fidonet? :+)

...so write a little application for catching, e.g., Alt_R and changing the
icon :)

BTW, I do not need keyboard state indicator at all. But some people (they was
using xmodmap before) ask me how to put the indicator on Scroll Lock led :)

I wouldn't say that you will be able to use Openoffice at that computer
even if it fits into hard drive space. I have here dual P4 with 1Gb of
RAM and openoffice is kinda slow for my taste.

For GUI: do not install any "graphical environments" like KDE or Gnome.
Just use some lightweight window manager, like icewm/blackbox, for example.
