Re: afterstep

1997-06-10 Thread Brad Bell
well, i found the problem. i'm not surprised nobody suggested it, because
it was so blazingly obvious... i changed the permissions on /tmp to 777,
and it works fine. so now i guess what i want to know is, what are the
default permissions on /tmp? i don't remember ever changing them.

no, that wasn't the problem. note that there are no problems with any
other wm i've tried (fvwm/2/95, olvwm, twm)

i should also note that X is killed when i start up afterstep.

afterstep

1997-06-06 Thread Brad Bell
hi, i am having some trouble (with permissions?) starting up afterstep.
if i start it as root, there are no problems.
if i start as a normal user, i get this:

velcro# cat /home/brad/.xsession-errors
sh: /tmp/steprcX: Permission denied
Cannot open m4-processed config file
: No such file or directory
xterm: fatal IO error 2 (Broken pipe) or KillClient on X server ":0.0"

the /tmp/ thing is what throws me off. /tmp is empty before and after i
try to start afterstep.
my system is basically 1.3.0

can anyone advise me on what to look for?

this isn't necessary... menu already looks in /usr/lib/menu/default

yes, there is another, 'more proper' way. rename the file to local-vim
and put it in /etc/menu. anything that starts with 'local' is installed,
regardless of what debian packages are installed. this is an inadequately
documented feature of menu (buried in a changelog file... hmpth :P )

that's the way to go.
of course, you can also use $HOME for user-specific stuff

mgetty should not be necessary, agetty (the debian default) works fine for
local terminals. read the Serial-HOWTO, and ignore the references to
/etc/gettydefs (if you decide to use agetty) and of course read the
appropriate man pages.

both. it makes a .deb package of your customized kernel.

i ran:

make-kpkg -revision custom.1.0 kernel_image

from the directory /usr/src/linux, and it put the file:

kernel-image-2.0.27_custom.1.0_i386.deb

into /usr/src

make-kpkg is easier to use and easier to keep track of changes once you
figure out how to use it right.

i've got the menu package installed and working great (with fvwm2/95). i
was wondering if anyone out there knows how to add a menu item for
something which is not part of a debian package. i.e. stuff i've manually
installed, like x48 or doom or amaya. -- i could just add them to a
totally unrelated package which happens to be installed, but that doesn't
seem very proper... is there a file i can put in /etc/menu which will be
read in even if there is no debian package of that name?
