Subject: [linux-security] Perl script to locate F0 0F C7 C8 bombs (fwd)

There is no known fix to the F0 0F C7 C8 bug at this time. What can be
done, however, is run a program, such as the script after my signature, to
locate any and all such programs. This script can be used in single
user mode after a mysterious lockup on a multiuser Pentium system.

I hope it is possible to come up with a software fix for this problem.

#!/usr/bin/perl

# There is no known software fix to the F0 0F C7 C8 bug at this time

# usage: finddeath dir

# This script will search for programs with this sequence, which will
# help sysadmins take appropriate action against those running such
# programs

# This script is written (but has not been tested) in Perl4, to
# insure maximum compatibility

True on the paying for something that has yet to start development. But I
doub't they will disapear soon. They have been arround for almost 2 years
now. I have used several releases of it myself.

It is a very nice browser. Nicer now with javascript support. The best
feature I liked was the zoom feature.. nice for hard of site, or late,

By default the kernel has support precompiled in for zip. As long as it
is connected at turn on, it will be found as /dev/sda4 (or sba4, i forget
which)

Other wise, compile a kernal, include scsi support, zip is under the scsi

Disapearing /dev/tty0's

1997-09-25 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

I have had an interesting problem rear it's ugly head two times now .. my
/dev/tty0's get SNAFUed for some reason.

This is what they look like normally:
 tty00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16450
 tty01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A
 tty03 at 0x02e8 (irq = 3) is a 16450

BUT two times now, this has happened when the system boots up:

 tty00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16450
 tty01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16450

tty03 disapears and with it gone .. the mouse works but if I type pon to
dial up the modem doesn't work and the mouse freezes and I have to reboot
to get it back.

Several reboots and the tty's go back to normal and everything works
again. It has me befuddled. Anyone have any ideas?

Chad

Can nuke attacks be logged?

1997-09-23 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

Just wondering if there is a way to log nuke, icenuke, icmp ping attacts
done against a system?

I had missed someone coming on IRC (undernet servers not linpeople) and
nuking 15 or so people 4 times or more. Was wondering if attempts against
me woulkd be logged so I can call their ISP and have a friendly little
chit chat with them.

system (486dx 33 and 12mb ram) it took about 6 hours to do. I know most
people have a lot better than I do so average for most I would suspect is
1 to 2 hours or less.

When done you just install the applix.deb file. Works nice too.

Ok, it was the zipdrive causing the non-printing .. but now another small

This prints but stairsteps:

:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:tf=/etc/filter.pcl:\
:af=/var/log/lp-acct:\
:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:\
:pl#66:\
:pw#80:\
:pc#150:\
:mx#0:\
:rp=text:\
:sh:

This is the apsfilter setup ... but doesn't print anything at all .. just
keeps the files in the que:

lp|lp2|bj200-letter-auto-mono|bj200 auto mono:\
   :lp=/dev/lp1:\
   :sd=/var/spool/lpd/bj200-letter-auto-mono:\
   :lf=/var/spool/lpd/bj200-letter-auto-mono/log:\

   :if=/usr/lib/apsfilter/filter/aps-bj200-letter-ascii-mono:\

   :rp=text:\

Any ideas what I have going wrong here? I have tried eveything I know
from when I had this problem 15 months ago ... :\

Printing Problems

1997-09-05 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

Installed lpr and aspfilter ... but when I try to print I get this message:
'waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)'

I have tried /dev/lp0 through 4 and it still says that the printer isn't
ready when it is.

Could it be because I am going from the printer port to the zip drive to
the printer?

Other system I set up was remote printing so I didn't deal with this. Any
ideas?

Debian kernels .30 and .29 are alread compiled for zip support, as long as
the zip drive is connected at startup, it will see it. Then, all you need
to do is:

-> cd /
-> mkdir zip
-> mount (options) /dev/sda4 /zip
-> cd /zip

Do what you need to do then `umount /zip`

If the kernel doesn't have support, compile a kernel, add scsi support and
say 'n' till you get to the one for "Iomega Drive Support" or something
along that line, then say 'y'.

Fast save is not a good way to save anyway ... it just appends data to the
file. The file inturn is bigger than it needs to be and is fragmented ..
I always do a save as once and a while to clean up the files. Matter of
preference on saving I guess.

Installed Applix the other night. I like it just as much as Office95/97
little slow on my system ... but I will be upgrading it in a couple of
months.

As for file importing and exporting ... Applix Words can bring in almost
everything that word and wordperfect can open/import. It does not like
nor will it open fast save documents though .. comes up with an
incompatable format error.

Exporting is nice too ... rtf and word, html, word perfect (down to
version 3 on both I think) and several other formats. I have been using
the rtf format lately.

On the whole .. I like it a lot better that StarOffice (which decided to
stop working) .. I havn't tried bring a staroffice file into applix yet ..
that will be next test I guess.

Use the .rpm and run `alien applix*.rpm`, after some quik debugging and
installing dpkg-dev from hamm and 3 hours of building ... slow system

very nice .. better than Star Office which had quit wanting to run at all.

No, it is much, much more than just a chat line. You can chat if you want
to, but you can send data back and forth easily, you can conference more
securely, you can send emails to one another ... it is the poor mans
replacement for "Novel Groupwise" (with some additions).

SNAFU system

1997-07-23 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

I had an interesting problem develop .. would almost say overnight, but I
don't think so.

I hadn't used my system for 3 days and the other night we had the worst
thunderstorm (and the first of them) this summer. I did a shutdown -h now
before the storm took out power.

It was down a day and last night I fired it back up. I noticed it
couldn't find some modules in the kernel, like vfat and some other file
system types.

When I login, I get addition chars when I type. The 5 and 6 keys put out
something like this h6 and g5 the - gives me '- the G key is 5g and I
think the H is something like 6h.

Also the esc key would complete what ever I was typing ... now it doesn't
and it just beeps at me.

This happens in both console and xwindows, so I am at a loss what could
have caused all this to happen.

Any ideas?  Would like to have my system back to working order :}

EFNet in debian circle

1997-07-21 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

Just added another IRC network to the #debian channel net.

We currently have Undernet , Linpeople and EFNet linked together through
Bots. Giving people on one irc network access to help from the other irc
networks.

We are wanting to add other networks together for 1 giant botnet of irc
networks. If you have a #Debian channel on an irc network not listed
above, email me and we will get a link up added.

Re: Weekly log reporting system for apache?

1997-07-14 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

There is Analog that is a .deb package under net or web on the ftp sites.
It does an OK job, personally, I use a perl script program called
Accesswatch as far as I know it is not a .deb package. It is at
http://accesswatch.com/ next to nothing in configuration is needed and it
runs without a cgi-bin (I have it set in the cron to run at 11:45 every
night). That is it's one drawback, it is a daily program, it doesn't do
it weekly or monthly ... maybe ask the author for a version to do that
next release.

[somewhat off topic] Javascript bug

1997-07-10 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

I just found out about this javascript bug that affects both IE and NS.
They say it works on all versions on NS (linux/unix/windows/mac) I have
checked it on the mac.. and it does work there.

Will check the linux version once I get home tonight. Unless someone
beats me to it. This is more a security issue than anything else.

The artcile url is below and NS has a patch out already.

Way to set up a MacFiles virtual drive?

1997-07-01 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

Way back when I was working at one of my older jobs we used Macs and UNIX
stations. Our unix accounts had a MacFiles directory that allowed a mac
to connect to it like it was a regular mac drive.

Now at my new job I am using Mac and Linux systems. Is there a way I can
add MacFiles support to my system? I saw several mac programs, but non
had MacFiles listed. Is there a MacFiles or will I have to use something
else to accomplish this?

Re: Books on Debian

1997-06-25 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

Almost sorta supprised that noone has mentioned the DBP (Debian Book
Project) that I had started a few months back. URL is in sig.

Mainly I started it for 2 main reasons, which are:

1) Publicity - I have seen about 12 books on linux (have 4 of them) they
cover SlackWare and RedHat, well the new "Unleashing Linux" has a small
section on Caldera's OpenLinux Lite. But for the most part it is only
about those two. I found Debian myself by accident, otherwise I would be
running RedHAd since that was the only dist. I had .. other than Slack
which I had used before and disliked.

It is known that Debian is mainly popular by word of mouth advertising.
Most the people that do a first time instalation will go and buy a book on
it, they have two choices; Slackware or RedHat .. I want to give them a
third choice on the shelf: Debian

2) Documentation - I am one of them that "Old fashioned peopele" I liike
to read printed materal rather than on a computer screen ... don't want to
get any more blind ;)

Personally, I would like to have everything I need printed together is an
ordered, human readable format (Some of the howto's and man pages take 10
to 15 readings just to know what on earth they are doing).

Mainly a book would be geared to the first time / begining debian user.
People just feel more comfortable having a refernce book they can always
refer back to. There are quite a few debian centered changes to this
version of Linux; the main one being the install. 6 disks vs 30 or so ...

Well, this is all from this jabber mouth .. I have webmaster type job
thing to get back to now.

Chad

P.S. I am on IRC is anyone wants to talk to me .. either on an undernet
server or the linpeople.org server in the channel #Debian .. I go by
WildOne- there.

Others have pointed out that the Debian Project have a bug tracking

would like you to submit your bug reports there.

Top Ten Signs You Might Be A Sysadmin
-- by Jonathan Kalbfeld

10. You see a bumper sticker that says "Users are Losers" and you have
no idea it is referring to drugs.

9. Your sleep schedule is similar to that of the great horned owl.

8. You make more than all of the MBAs you know who actually finished
college.

7. You have enough computing power in your house or apartment to render
obscene pictures of upper management people.

6. Your idea of a social event is going to a Non-Disclosure Discussion.

5. The last time you wore a tie was your high school graduation.

4. The last time you kissed someone was in high school.

3. "What? No raise? No Backups, then!"

2. You have a vanity plate on your car that names part of the Unix File
System.

And the number one sign you might be a Sysadmin...

1. You have ever uttered the phrase
"I will be working from home today so I can avoid wearing pants."

Re: Starwiter

1997-06-08 Thread Chad D. Zimmerman

I get that too once and a while with the StarOffice stuff as well. And I
figured out what it was with me ... and it may be the same for you.

If I would get the error, I would do an 'su - your ' and then
try swriter3 again .. and then it would work. Not sure exactly why that
would have that big a reason ... but it would work after I do that.
