GRUB: "error incompatible license. Entering rescue mode..."
Hello Yesterday I created an empty guest system on a VMware Host, bootet it with a GRML CD, copied over a running system and installed a boot loader using grub-install. When rebooting this newly cloned guest system I got the following error: GRUB loading. Welcome to GRUB! error: incompatible license. Entering rescue mode... grub rescue> I felt a bit baffled and had no clue so I rebooted GRML again, and this time ran the grub-install after doing a chroot into the cloned system. That worked. Still, I'm wondering where this "incompatible license" error comes from. I cannot find it in the current GRUB2 source code. Has it anything to do with VMware? Google shows a couple of hits for this message but no real answer to where there should be a license issue. Custom kernel-headers package with all headers? (arch/i386/Makefile.cpu)
Hello What is the right way to build a custom kernel from e.g. upstream 2.6.17.4 sources and produce a kernel-header package that contain at least "arch/i386/Makefile.cpu" and similar files? "make-kpkg kernel_header" produces a kernel-header package which lacks this file. The err file is created by safe_mysqld to catch the output mysqld produces when it cannot start. As mysqld outputs to stderr on errors, too, everything is appended to that file in the nohup line, too. So there's currently the problem whether never to rotate it or to loose the errors messages. I change the behaviour of the Debian package to not rotating now. Survey: Should MySQL be chroot'ed?
Hi I'm currently preparing the 4.x version of mysql (see /experimental/) and thinking about chrooting the daemon in /var/lib/mysql. This would be more secure although it would be a bit of work for me and limit the LOAD DATA INFILE and SELECT INTO OUTFILE commands to this directories. Debian rescue-cd (instead of those spartanic rescue-disk)?
Hello Last week my system was absolutely unusuable due to some foolish lilo experiments and I had trouble getting it working right again as I use reiserfs which is sadly not supported by any rescue disc or installation CD I have floating around here. The only collegue whom I gave reiserfs, too sadly had no disc drive and only a CD-ROM. In this situation I asked myself why there is no proper Debian rescue CD package available that installes one or better two/three different kernels and a "live" filesystem in ramdisc which contains enough stuff to even compile a specific kernel and has all necessary documentation like the lilo manual etc installed. I could even think of a ready base system so that you could boot with this rescue CD, copy it to an empty harddisc and continue installing Debian with apt (an alternative to the normal Debian CDs for profis). Any thoughts? Are there rescue-disks (yard, the debian boot-floppies) which could easily expanded to this setup? (Else I really play with the thought to make this rescue script myself, but why reinventing the wheel as there are so many rescue-disks...) bye, -christian- -- Real Users never know what they want, but they always know when your program doesn't deliver it.

Just for the ones who are curious. The "problem" was just that I didn't knew the exact definitions of buffer and cache. "cache" is the cache for text segments of programs, e.g. /bin/ls would be very likely be in this cache. "buffer" is the cache for IO drivers, here my IDE disk drivers store physical blocks without caring what data is in there. So both are caches. Who eats my buffers?! (kernel leaks memory?)
Hello I have a serious problem. One of the servers I administrate seems to have a buffer leak. free and vmstat show me that the buffer size increases by some K every second leading to a 15M memory loss per hour. I'm currently running a PII with 256M RAM and kernel 2.2.15 (latest). I've stopped all unvital processes (except ssh as I did it remote) and it still leaked :-( Any Idea how to find the memory eater? I would you suggest me to do another kernel update to 2.3.99pre17? Or is it even a normal behaviour for the kernel and it stops somewhen? Background is that it crashed on it's first day in production service with a out-of-memory error displayed at the console - after two month working idle in test mode. After that I upgraded this morning from 2.0.36 to 2.2.15. I can't tell how exaktly the buffer behaviour was in 2.0.36 :-( Help! -christian- -- Linux - the choice of the GNU generation. If it's only some specific programs that you can't start then I'll bet that they aren't actually installed on your system :-) The apt-get won't work unless you have a running internet connection because it tries to fetch the software from ftp.debian.org or unless you defined a cdrom entry in /etc/apt/sources.list. Re: MySQL from Netgod hoses DBI???
Hello > I recently upgraded MySQL from www.netgod.net/x/ and now my DBI stuff > doesn't work. Here are the relevant (I think) packages: ... > Can't load '/usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux/5.004/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.so' > for module DBD::mysql: libmysqlclient.so.4: The recent MySQL package depends on libmysqlclient6. Your DBI seems to be quite old and from the slink distribution. Since the former mysql maintainer did not seperate the library to an extra package you now only have two choices: a) downgrade mysql to the one that's shipped with slink (3.20.23 I think) b) upgrade Perl DBI. You can use the most recent one thats available on CPAN or as Debian Package. If you use the Debian package you should get the source and compile it yourself since you have an older perl version than me. You probably have to kill the depends out of the debian/control file, too, to get dpkg to install it. Mail me if you have further problems. bye, -christian- / MySQL and PerlDBI maintainer. P.S.: I will harden the depends on a more recent Perl-DBI in my MySQL package to prevent such failures from now on. netscape and xfs-xtt and windows TTF
Hello List I have a problem with xfs-xtt although I read the Font-Deuglification HOWTO and the Debian TTF mini-HOWTO. The following HTML code generates two lines of exactly the same font height. It works fine with all "normal" fonts. Just the windows TrueType fonts all behave like this. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy old dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy old dog. I tested with gtkfontsel and came to the result that it was able to give me any size of all TTF fonts I requested. xlsfonts shows me: ... -monotype-arial black-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 -monotype-arial-bold-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 -monotype-arial-bold-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 -monotype-arial-medium-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 -monotype-arial-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 ... My /usr/local/share/fonts/TrueType/fonts.dir looks like this: arial.ttf -Monotype-Arial-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 arialbd.ttf -Monotype-Arial-bold-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 arialbi.ttf -Monotype-Arial-bold-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 ariali.ttf -Monotype-Arial-medium-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 ariblk.ttf -Monotype-Arial Black-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 ... Re: color in xterm
> 1. the xterm scrollbar displays differently in debian from in redhat. I > like it in redhat more. Is it a thing about terminfo? ( Running redhat > binary in debian got same result. ) This is configurable by the ~/.Xresources: XTerm*rightScrollBar: true XTerm*scrollBar:true XTerm*multiScroll: true IIRC there's some for the color, too. do a "man xterm" ! > 2. what are all xterm.color* about? I observe some relationship between > them with some application's color appearance, but not able to understand > all. you have 16 colors that you can set with the ANSI sequences. (try a "/bin/ls --color | less -n" to see it) I you say vim: use color 'red' then its color #4. xterm.color4 then actually maps this color to a RGV value for your monitor. > 3. syntax color( VI ) shows differently in different term > emulators. Basically, I like the color in rxvt. strange - xterm offers you *three* degrees of each color, rxvt only two (bold, underline and normal, I think are choosable, in rxvt two are shown the same) You should be able to set this with xterm.color* > 4. I like ctrl-up and ctrl-down equals to up and down resp.(VI insert > mode) However, I only get it in redhat's xterm. you mean moving the cursor while beeing in input mode ? That's a vim thing and has nothing to do with xterm (i thing:-)) Here it's working wonderfull btw. I think it's standard with vi so maybe clean all your vim files, and install the most recent version. > 5. I used to have key work in Pine. Unfortunately, not any > more. I had similar problems, too. I did: 1. only use xterm (more memory but it's simply better) 2. use "export TERM=xterm-debian" 3. in my ~/.Xresources inserted: ! Debians xterm *VT100.Translations: #override ~Meta \ BackSpace: string("\177")\n\ Delete: string("\033[3~")\n\ Home: string("\033OH")\n\ End: string("\033OF") 4. Then you have to configure pine to use the following codes for home, end: home: [H end:[F Be carefull, if you press (in vim) ctrl-v and then home you will get ^[OH and then you have to modify it to ^[[H. (^[ is ESC).
