[Fwd: OK I'm stupid. How do I get to my floppy and other hard partition?]

1998-03-14 Thread Chuma Agbodike

--- Begin Message ---
I have seen the replies to you about how to get to your floppy. It got me
wondering.
In the realm of curiousity I play with linux for a while until I realize it is
intruding
into
my work life and get back to WIN 95 & NT. Everytime I get back to try and use
linux for something I have to relearn doing simple things like trying to use a
floppy.
Gets irritating. No flames , but I thought that there was a project that would
make
it easy for us folks who just want to use an X app like star office etc and
once in a
while copy something to floppy or someother mundane task without recompiling
or going through the hoops. For example I use MC a lot and wish something like
that is builtin. Point & click. People bad mouth windows, but it is very simple
to
use even NT.

How about the so called Certificate Authorities?
Should one use them ?
And if am paranoid should I trust them ?
What if I impersonate someone and give out keys under their name ?
I read something about such issues long ago , but still don't understand.

Re: Partitioning

1997-12-18 Thread Chuma Agbodike
Hi Gertjan

One thing still puzzles me that I hope you can clear up for me.
Supposing I buy a brand new hard disk. IDE, SCSI or whatever.
To use it, I have to partition it, using a utility like FDISK .
FDISK writes the MBR and Partition Table. Right ?

If I go and start copying files to any of the partitions, the data can't be
read.
Because I have to format or initialize the partition before writing to it .
Right ?

So how come the system can write/read the MBR and partition table ???

diald vs ipmasquerade

1997-11-22 Thread Chuma Agbodike
Do diald and ipmasquerading serve the same purpose ?
Or do I have to use both ? I have a 3 node ethernet lan.
The all had windows on them. Now I installed Linux 2.0.29 (debian 1.3)
on the unit that has the modem on it. And would like the other units
to access the internet via the modem on LINUX unit.
So I have diald running on the linux. The windows node have the
linux unit as their gateway. But if I ping an IP diald doesn't dial.

What next ?

Thanks.

Installing a generic PCI network card

1997-11-18 Thread Chuma Agbodike
I had a 16 bit NE2000 card in my desktop. - An AMD 166 based computer.
Since I wanted to add a third system (using a 486) I replaced the 16 bit
NIC
with a PCI NE2000.
So I go to recompile in the PCI NE2000 into the Linux on the AMD
computer.
During make config, I pick PCI. Well linux would not see the PCI card.
I finally told it I had other ISA NE2000 and LINUX saw it (Just like
before)
except that IRQ and base address changed.

Why is it being used as a 16 bit card. Or is it running as a 32 bit ?

Re: Can't login anymore

1997-11-15 Thread Chuma Agbodike
Thanks Oliver. You nailed it.
I had forced install of libreadlineg2, libc6 and a bunch of other stuff
postgresql 6.2.1 was complaining about that it needed. Boy! am I sorry I did
that.
What a mess. My dotmatrix
printer now prints a line a minute. Still can't figure that one out. Fixed
startx.
Anyway you mentioned changing /bin/bash to some other shell. I tried csh and it
made it possible to login. But when I tried to run some scripts I got
segmentation fault.
So I reinstalled libreadline2 from cdrom. Booted and I get my usuual login
prompt.

Now maybe you can help. How do I get libreadling2 to install. With it I can run
the
progres psql. Without it I get a buzzing sound until I control-C.

I think I still have libc6 in there. But maybe that's why am having trouble
with printing.

Also can you tell me what version of progres you run .

Incidently I sent you a message a few days before I got into this jam.
To olly@lfix.co.uk and pointed out to you that the URL in your signature is
broken.

Thanks.

Can't login anymore

1997-11-14 Thread Chuma Agbodike
Right after I installed postgres 6.2.1 and played with is a little I
can't log into my LINUX anymore. Everything goes on as usual until it
reaches:
INIT: entering runlevel: 2
Then it differs from what it used to do, which is start the various
daemons
Now it says: Debian Linux 1.3 (none) tty1
(none) ? That's not what it used to say.

(none) login:

No matter how I login : even as root it takes me back to (none) login:

If I try it loops also on the following:

"Give root password for maintenance"
(or type Control-D for normal startup):

Only way out is a hard reset

Please help. If there is any way rather than reinstall.

Samba Samba

1997-11-03 Thread Chuma Agbodike
The only time Samba agrees to print HERE is when I make the user an
admin user.
That is using the NT as a samba client. And use the printer attached to
the LINUX box.
I have LINUX 2.0.29 networked to an NT 4.0 server.

How can I persuade Samba to let everyone print ?
If user is not admin user I get Access denied writing to the printer
when I click on
Print. As soon as I add user to admin user then samba prints.

Thanks

Re: [Fwd: My printer is missing]

1997-10-30 Thread Chuma Agbodike
Solved !
Uncommented auto in /etc/modules.
Saw extra lp in conf.modules. Was reading "options lp lp io=0x378 irq=7"
removed the extra lp. Rebooted and the printer shuddered. Was not doing that
before.
Then I noticed that the printer was being accessed every minute or so but
nothing was
printing. Went and cleared the spooler. But still could not print. Checked the
messages
file in logs and saw several refernces to lp0. But printcap had refernce to lp1.

Corrected and it's printing now. Now I can move on to samba to see if I can
print
from NT server to LINUX printer.

[Fwd: My printer is missing]

1997-10-30 Thread Chuma Agbodike

--- Begin Message ---
I have a 2 node network. I run winNT, win95 , DOS and LINUX
installed.
I only recently installed LINUX 2.0.29 though I had messed with it off
and on since 0.99
Anyway I usually print from win95 or NT. Then one day I wanted to get a
hard copy
of a short text in LINUX. oops! no go. did lpq. and stuff was in que.

I looked the the spooler log and I am told the printer daemon (lpd)
could not find
/dev/lp1. Well I know it's there. So I do /proc/devices. Indeed it is
not there.

How do I get it back in there ? I am running LPRNG with magicfilter.

So far I deleted printcap, re-installed lprng, and re-ran
magicfilterconfig to generate
a new printcap. My PCI mbd insists on forcing use of an IRQ instead of
allowing polling
so I tell LINUX via lilo.conf to use iobase addrs 0x378 and IRQ 7.

Still no go. I modprobe lp.o and the printer shudders. Yet I still can't
print from LINUX.

Oh I had installed samba a few days ago. Was able to talk to NT server
from linux, but thats about it. Have not had time to play more with it.

Re: mouse/X compatibility problem

1997-10-30 Thread Chuma Agbodike
If it works in win95 and you see mouse cursor like you say, I suspect whoever
configured
you X picked the wrong mouse device. Check your X86config file. I belive it's
in
/etc/X11 . Also make sure you indeed have a serial mouse. Win95 is capable of
detecting PS2, BUS and serial mice. LINUX X must be told what you have.
And what device to use to access it.

Re: 3C509 acting strangely on Win95/Debian dual boot system

1997-10-30 Thread Chuma Agbodike
I remember having similar problems . When I got my Infomagic 6 CD set, and
wrote
the install (rescue) diskette, LINUX wouldn't even boot. It will hang at the
spot where
it is looking for SCSI device. Well after several attempts at this I
abandoned the idea
of LINUX.

Then after several weeks, I tried again and it came up and let me install
LINUX.
But it froze again when I tried to boot from hard disk and even the rescue
disk like old.
I forget the sequence of things. pwr down, boot win95, boot DOS. Soon I had
Linux
again. So I proceeded to recompile. Took references of any stuff I dont use
out of the
config. Added append "ether=11,0x340" to LILO.CONF ..yours may vary!!

I dont have that problem anymore.
Wait!! I do when I pop in the RESCUE diskette.

So I suggest rebuilding your favorite kernel.

Re: Linux/NT Dual Boot

1997-10-30 Thread Chuma Agbodike
BOOTPART does work. I used it about 2 months ago while contemplating how to
have on demand boot to handle the different OSes that I toy with.
I have WinNT, Win95, DOS 6.22, and LINUX 2.0.29 available. Still having problems
in my attempts to add Caldera OpenDos.
I let NT40 handle the MBR here. During Linux installs I tell Linux to park
himself in it's partition and stay away from the MBR. Then tell bootpart to add
Linux.
Same proceedure for DOS, WIN95

Now has anyone toyed with adding OPEN DOS to a boot handler? That other
partition
I have (230 mb) is begging to be put to use .

It happened to me also. Ctrl-C was the only way out.
Then grief doing the rest of the install manually.
This is the first time it happened to me too.
I installed from Informagic's 6 set CD.

I suspect you told xf86config to Probe.
Do not probe. And do not use the fancy setup program.

And then make sure you see a stable grey screen before venturing further.
You may also have to use the following command line.

I have downloaded and installed Netscape commuinicator ver 4.03

Recompiling Linux

1997-01-21 Thread Chuma Agbodike
I started with Debian Distribution 2.0.6. Then got 2.0.13 from sunsite
and managed to update the kernel using kernel package or some such.
Linux is now 2.0.13. A few days ago I decided to try most stuff as
modules except kerneld, ext2 files system and anything else I chose the
default. Sound I have and chose to have sound included. Then went to
recompile. I have not suceeded. I get a lot of the following:

drivers/block/block.a(genhd.o) in function 'disk_name'
genhd.o(text+0x3c2): undefined reference to 'ide_xlate_1024'
lots of such but different undefined references eg. 'device_setup'
 undefined reference to 'net_dev_init'
lots more that scrolled off the screen and finally:

make: [vmlinux] Error 1

make dep ran without error.

What did I miss ?

How do I get back my LINUX

1997-01-17 Thread Chuma Agbodike
I was trying to make my own rescue disk using Yard-1.7. The kernel +
root disk that it prepared would not fit in 2 diskettes. On checking
a few things, I noticed that my LINUX did not have RAMDISK
configured into it. So I ran make config and edited Makefile
uncommenting RAMDISK giving it size as 2048. At the same time added
busmouse (now that I have a busmose after acquiring a 2nd modem).

Then make dep, clean, zImage. It failed . mentioning stuff like core
dump etc. Anyway I wanted my old LINUX back. So I edited lilo.conf to
reflect 2.0.6 instead of 2.0.13 (I had 2.0.13 running when compile
failed.) PROBLEM: I forgot to run lilo before rebooting. On rebooting
I was greeted by crc error . System halted. Only way out was
hard reset. I thought I could just use my BOOT & ROOT diskettes to
fix things. I got in and shelled out. Mounted the filesystem on the
HD. and tried to run lilo after copying boot.b to /boot. That got me:

"Don't know how to handle device 0x100"

How can I get back my LINUX? I spent a lot of time setting it up.
I hate to think that I may have to start over.

Thanks Nathan. I did everything you recommended. Still no go.
I will assume now that my floppy drive cannot handle non standard
format. I can rawrite to it and make new INSTALL BOOT and ROOT disks.

The floppy diskette still gave me errors. And when I tried to boot
from it anyway, just to see. I get:

LILO CatRescue
Error 0x04
LILO CatRescue
Error 0x04

Until I reset the system via the push button.

I really appreciate your assistance.

Thanks Nathan, I just did a search and downloaded it.

Speaking of ARCHIE servers, which are the ones that get HITs frequently?
The one I use is FTP SEARCH at Trondheim, Norway. Most of it's hits
are in Europe. Much as am happy to find what am looking for, some of the
sites can be rather slow. I once had no choice but download an 8 meg
postscript file at 700bps, with a 28.8K modem even though I was careful
to get in at a time I thought traffic would be low (2 am sunday central
european time).
I pulled in this Rescue program from umc.edu at 2.6K bps Decent!

Thanks to all that responded.

Maybe I did not make a rescue disk the right way.
I tried to boot from my rescue diskette, but the system kept bringing up
the LINUX on hard disk and thereby still refusing access because of
wrong password. So I used the INSTALL BOOT and ROOT diskettes. Somewhere
in the menu it offered "mount a previously prepared disk partition" or
something to that effect. I did and the took "execute a shell".
>From there I got access to /etc/passwd. Edited root passwd to blank.
Anyway I was wrong about there not being a passwd. I obviously forgot
it. Well the install insisted that I enter a password which I eventually
did. Then Dpkg came up and I quit it. Booted and gave it the new passwd
I picked. Not to have this repeat, I went back into the passwd file and
made root passwd blank.

But HOW does one make RESCUE disk properly. Mine surely didn't rescue
me!

When I installed Debian 1.1 (linux 2.0) and later upgraded to 2.0.6

For some time now I have not logged into Linux. Been busy with several
other stuff. Close to 2 months or more.

Today I booted linux and it won't let me in. I log in as root and give
it at password prompt. Keeps rejecting me.

How do I get around this? I hate to think that I have to re install
from scratch after all the work I did getting it to where I like it.

First, I'll assume you are running 3.1.2 and that you have mach64
server. You might let Xconfig setup program (don't quite remember the
name) probe your hardware. If you still have problems go manual and
be sure to get your monitor specs handy (hsync, vertical sync etc)
and also your ATI specs (RAMDAC etc)

I had used make-kpkg to build a debian package of linux 2.0.13 sources
and installed the resulting .deb . Then I found that I had to
reconfigure because my sound card will not work in windows every time I
run Linux and switch back to win 95. I have to run DOS 5.0 to revive the
sound in win 95. Since the IRQs and addresses were different in win 95
I decided to make the sound irqs in win 95 the same as in linux.

Anyway after make config , make-kpkg refuses to run telling me there is
nothing to make. What do I need to do to have make-kpkg rebuild with the
new config ?

Thanks James.

After studying your response, I searched for all ocurences of insmod.
There was another lurking somewhere. I renamed it to insmodold. Even
though you said use the other insmod, it would not work. I kept on
getting: insmod not a file or directory. Well I went to read LINUX
manual about unix commands and started to understand why
./load_module.sh has that dot before the slash. In DOS if you're in the
current DIR and the command is there the system doesn't have to stick to
the path. So you get my drift I hope. Anyway I applied my haunch and got
the help info after I did ./insmod from /usr/src/dosemu.bin where the
insmod command was placed. It worked.

>From there I went on. Now I studied the DOSEMU info files some more and
finally was able to get DOSEMU started.

Thanks.

Now I have to figure out why am getting:

DOSEMU: ttys lock: (/usr/spool/uucp/LCK .. mouse): No such file or dir.
DOSEMU: ttys lock: (/usr/spool/uucp/LCK .. modem): No such file or dir.

And int10,0 set_video_mode failed

Like I said am new to this stuff!

In my linux Makefile, BOOTDIR is specified as /boot .
I am very green in linux. Migrating from DOS and win31 / 95. I currently
have to LILO boot DOS (and thus run Win95 or 3.1) or Linux. However I

Thanks Michael.

I followed your suggestion. After recompiling, I did ./load_module.sh as
instructed. But I got a new error:

error reading zSystem.map errno=2. I have System.map in /boot not zSystem.map

I looked at both directories . They do not compare so I hesitate to do that
until I
learn how to unlink in case I mess up. Thanks Richard. I'm afraid I may not
have
understood you well enough.

DOSEMU

1996-09-11 Thread Chuma Agbodike
I got and compiled DOSEMU 0.63.1.75. After several attempts, going back
and forth to pick up needed stuff like bison, byacc, libslang it finally
compiled. Then when I tried to run it, I get this:

Error: The module was compiled on kernel version 2.0.0
This kernel(mine) is version 2.0.13. They don't match.
Check that the module is useable with the current kernel,
recompile the module and try again.

Where can I find the up to date module (emumodule) ? Or what should
I do to make the one I have match the current kernel?

intalled it. First time the compile failed again. I then deleted the
whole source tree and started afresh. This time it worked and generated
kernel-image_2.0.13_Custom.1_i386.deb, which I then installed with dpkg.
However, when I told it to make a boot floppy, I got this:

ioctl(FDGETPRM): No such device.

Anyway I liloed and booted the new kernel. Now my sound doesn't work
in windows 95 anymore. Scratching head.

Compile error

1996-09-05 Thread Chuma Agbodike
I have linux 2.0.6 running. I installed it from the kernel image I got
fro ftp.debian.org using dselect. Since it was configured for a
different hardware setup than mine I decided to reconfigure. I got a new
kernel source 2.0.13 and unpacked it in /usr/src/linux. I also picked
up make-kpkg 2.0.3. I ran make config and satisfied my hardware setup.
Then ran: make-kpkg -r Custom.1 kernel_image. 40 mins later I get this:

as86 -0 -a -o bootsect.o bootsect.s
make[3] as86: command not found.
make[3] [bootsect.o] Error 127
make[2] *** [boot] Error 2
make[1] *** [build] Error 2
make: *** [stamp-image] Error 2

as not as86 is in my /usr/sbin. I have not been able to locate as86

Any ideas what am doing wrong? BTW I noticed a new vmlinux that is twice
as large as my vmlinuz, so am guessing as86 has something to do with
compressing vmlinux.
