Re: rsync question

2015-02-06 Thread Curtis Vaughan
That seems to work, but here's a problem. Each time it enters a new user
directory I have to re-enter the root password. I realize I can just set
it up so that I don't have to enter a password at all, but maybe there's a
way to set it, so I'd have to only enter the root password once?

rsync question

2015-02-06 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I need to rsync several, but not all, the Maildir directories under /home.
I have a file with all the user accounts, so what would the script be to
say take each user account name and then rsync up each Maildir directory.

The rsync command would be:

rsync -arv ./[username]/Maildir/ root@[computer]:/home/[username]/Maildir/

I have already gone through each user's directory and manually done each
one over the course of the week. Now I want to be able to sink up using a
single command.

Thanks for any help!

Having an issue setting up vsftpd. In order to avoid an "unsupported record

That will resolve that issue, but then the client can't upload any files.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

libc6 dependencies

2007-10-01 Thread Curtis Vaughan

I was updating an etch server when I ran into the following error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libc6-dev: Depends: libc6 (= 2.3.6.ds1-13etch2) but 2.3.6.ds1-13
is installed

I ran apt-get -f install which yielded:

libc6_2.3.6.ds1-13etch2_i386.deb) ...

/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/preinst: line 130: ls: command not found

Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.3.6.ds1-13etch2_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I am root, so I don't understand the permission denied. Why certain
commands aren't found is even more perplexing.

Any ideas?

BTW, I found one post that the person said he fixed his problem by
removing something called virtualbox and then reinstalling it. I
don't have virtualbox installed.

Thanks for any ideas.

Ok the following line finds all the files that I want to move out the
folder:

find ./ -type f ! -mtime -2 -exec ls -al {} \;

So, now it's the next part that scares me.

Should I do this?

find ./ -type f ! -mtime -2 -exec ls -al {} \; | xargs mv ../

in order to move the files found in the script up one directory?

No actually the -d option is not an option. The reason is is because it
then asks you after all found duplicates, which of them you wish to

forever. I would rather think of a way to use the output of fdupes or

Just to put my 2 cents in.

I remember when Ubuntu was still in an earlier phase (about a year ago),
I did just what you wanted to do. But in order to do it, I used the
package manager to strip out pretty much everything. Then I rewrote
sources.list to point to debian package lists, apt-get update, apt-get

packages I wanted and installed them.

Something like that. Everything else I tried resulted in so many
dependency problems, as I recall.

Good luck!

Subject: Hard drive issue

Using a debian sarge system, with postfix and courier-imap.

Yesterday morning I started having IMAP connectivity problems with this
mail server. Going to the box itself I discovered that the following
error was occurring repeatedly:

kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 61870207
kernel: EXT3-fs error (device hdc1): ext3_find_entry: reading directory
#3866625 offset 0

So, I was certain this meant my HD was giving out on me.

After rebooting the system seemed fine for about 30 min. But then the
same error starting occurring.

Again I had to reboot. Right after rebooting I shut all mail services
down, and unmounted the drive in question (mounted as /home). Whereas I
had another drive by the same manufacturer and the exact same type
(size, etc.) I then decided to copy all of the failing drive to the new
one. (i.e.: dd if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdd)

By all calculations (the drive was 80 G), this copy process should have
taken no more than 50 min. Well over an hour and a half later I decided
to stop the copying. I mounted the new drive just to look at it. It
looked as though everything was there. But even a simple command as du
on the file structure and size caused that process to hang. No matter
what I tried I could not stop the process so I had to reboot.

I set /dev/hdc back to /home in fstab and rebooted. As I expected
everything worked. But I was expecting meltdown at any minute. Well,
that was yesterday. The system has been running since without a single
error. So, what am I supposed to make of this?

to stop the copying.

Kerberos acl permission

2005-12-01 Thread Curtis Vaughan
Trying to set up keberos5 on a Debian Sarge server. As a note I am going
by the instructions provided by a Linux Journal article, which may be
found at: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7336

Regardless, setting it up has been otherwise easy. But now I'm at the
part where I want to add other users. At one point in the set up,
however, the instructions said that you need to enable the administrator
to have all permissions (privileges), which is done by editing a
kadm5.acl file. But there is no such file. Because there is no such
permission file, apparently, I can't add users as the administrator. So,
I tried creating a kadm5.acl file (under /var/lib/krb5kdc/) but it that
didn't seem to help.

Here is the specific error when trying to add a user:

# kadmin

OpenLogos install problem

2005-11-21 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I'm trying to install OpenLogos Translation program. In order to install
I have to first compile, then run "make". When running compile I run
into the following error:

configure: javainclude FOR i686-pc-linux is
-I/lt/pkg/jdk1.5.0_02/include -I/lt/pkg/jdk1.5.0_02/include/linux

checking for jni.h... no
configure: error: No java dir

I tried install more java packages (specifically free-java-sdk) but that
didn't help.

What do I need to make the compile work?

I would write to the openlogos mail list, but it doesn't seem to be
available.

WIreless connectivity at boot

2005-11-06 Thread Curtis Vaughan
There has been this problem with my wireless connectivity that is
getting on my nerves. Every time I reboot I have to go through a series
of procedures just to get my wireless card to connect to my wireless
router. Unfortunately, I have never been able to pin down what exact
procedure I need to follow. But here are a few things I can say for sure.

At boot up there is 0 connectivity with my wireless router. However,
eth1 (the wireless card) is active (enabled). I have to manually issue
the command:

iwconfig eth1 key restricted **

And then I seem to have connectivity to the router. I judge that I have
connectivity by the fact that the network icon turns from 1 red diamond
to several blue ones. However, I never get an ip address from the
router. Then I just go through a series of ifconfigs and ifups and
ifdowns, etc., sometimes even /etc/init.d/network restart before finally
I get an ip address. Kind of a hassle. How can I make this more automatic?

Here is my interfaces file:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp
name Wireless LAN card
wireless-essid CCCP

Inspiron TrackStick - How to disable?

BTW, I know that you can set the BIOS such that when an external mouse

Can someone help me figure out why I don't seem to be using the swap

Why?
What can I do to get my swap partition being used as swap?

If you are wanting to record traffic sent over https, then you
cannot do
this anywhere between the desktop and the remote server, since all
that

recording this data before it is encrypted.

However, I would investigate the legal and ethical aspects of this
first, as there are a number of issues here.

Yeh, I was afraid that the encrypted factor would cause problems. As
for legality, it would be interesting to know what other people know,
but it is my understanding that: whereas the computers belong to the
business, all activities carried out on that computer are the
property of the company. This is precisely why email, internet
activity, etc. can all be legally monitored by a business as long as
such activity is carried out within the business' LAN and on the
business' computers. For example, when auditors from a hired
accounting firm come in, then I don't we would have the legal basis
for monitoring their computers or their traffic.

Re: Server crashing (revisited)

2005-07-22 Thread Curtis Vaughan

Hopefully those people who replied to this issue earlier can respond.

If you recall I had a problem with a server crashing (read below). I
started doing a memtest on the server itself while operating. It has
been running now 3 days. The server has not once crashed that whole
time. But this morning I stopped the memtest. Zero errors were
reported out of some 300+ tests. Then within minutes, it crashed. Now
isn't that peculiar?

Any explanation out there?

Ok I started running memtest, but I'm not sure exactly how to use

Hi.

This is why I asked if you could "afford to" do the test.

I was lucky because I had a spare machine and spare RAM: I swapped
the RAM and
put the "dodgy" RAM into the spare machine. I then used a Knoppix
boot CD and

booted into a memtest on the spare machine.

This meant that while the test was happening, I was not otherwise
using the

machine.

Sorry.

Yeh, I think I can do that. But if I just leave it testing 50m
would it show a problem if one exists? Or do I need to run memtest
at full 120m? And finally am I issuing the command right? Or is
there some other parameter(s) I should use?

PS. The conversation about types of RAM is not bothering me so if
it's constructive for others by all means continue.

In addition to what I've written already:
I noticed that in /etc/network/if-up.d there is a script

fsck on /dev/hde1 during boot,

2005-05-27 Thread Curtis Vaughan
Just installed Sarge on a server with 3 SCSIs and one IDE drive on an
Adaptec ATA RAID 1200 A card.

The system starts booting otherwise fine, until it gets to apparently
running fsck on the IDE drive. Then it errors out with:

fsck.ext3: No such device or address while trying to open /dev/hde1
Possibly non-existent or swap device?

Then it tells me to run fsck against it or hit Control-D to continue.

Doing a Control-D continues the boot process. Whereas /dev/hde1 = /
home, all I have to do after booting up is issue the command mount /
home and everything is working fine.

My guess is that for some reason /dev/hde1 is never mounted during
the boot process. How can I overcome this problem?

BTW, fstab does have an entry for this partition.

Question about a networking issue

2004-12-14 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I realize the following issue I describe has nothing necessarily to do
with Debian, but I've found this to be one of the better forums to get
answers.

Here is a really strange problem we are having between our 2 companies,
which no one so far seems to be able to figure out.

Our company is in the Seattle area and is connected to our parent
company in Russia by a VPN. The VPN, firewall, gateway solution for
both our offices is IPCop (1.4.1 in Seattle, 1.3.0 in Russia).

In the Seattle office we have postfix server using Courier-IMAP with a
POP3 daemon on a Linux server.

Last Friday, when the Russian personnel came to work, they were
receiving their mail just fine for about 2 hours. Then 5 employees (and
only 5 specific employees) were no longer able to receive any mail.
They were all using POP3.
In the logs I could see that they would LOGIN and the there would be an
immediate DISCONNECTED. Given the error they were getting at their end,
it was as if they would connect and login to the server, but certain
networking issues caused the server to believe that it had lost
connectivity with those users.
The IT Admin on the Russian side was one of the 5 experiencing
problems. His computer was set up to pull mail through a mail proxy
server in their office. So, I told him not to use the proxy and
circumvent it. Just go directly to our mail server through the VPN. He
started pulling mail fine.
AHA! The culprit was the mail proxy server. Wrong
It turns out only a few people were going through the proxy server. The
IT Admin in the Russian office went to the remaining 4 employees having
problems and switched them to either using the proxy or not. In the end
only one other of the employees starting pulling mail. In his case, he
went from going directly through the VPN to going through the mail
proxy in order to pull mail. Very strange. I had him try reconfiguring
the remaining three to go through the Internet (not through the VPN),
but that didn't resolve the problem either.
I asked him if they had any switches over there. Turns out they had
several.
Since he didn't want to shut down the switches till the office was
empty, we tried one other solution.
We switched the remaining 3 from POP3 to IMAP. It worked! But why?
That evening when the office emptied out, he shut down all the switches
for 10 minutes. As I understand 2 of the 3 remaining employees
nonetheless cannot get mail through POP3, but IMAP works.

So, I was wondering why this might be the case? What could possibly be
going on? What tests could we do to see what's going on?

BTW, we did do telnet sessions from the client computers. What happens
is the clients LOGIN through POP3, but then a disconnect happens.

unstable to testing

2004-11-16 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I was just looking at the sources.list file on our Debian server and I
realized we had unstable sources. I would guess that I used unstable in
order to get Samba 3, which maybe wasn't available in testing at the
time. But I don't know. Anyhow, I would rather be using testing. So, is
it rather painless to move from unstable to testing? And what's the
best way to approach that?

mime module in Apache

2004-11-02 Thread Curtis Vaughan
Using apache 1.3.31 on Debian 3.0 (kernel 2.6)
When I try to add the following line:
AddModule mod_mime.c
to /etc/apache/modules.conf I get an error trying to start up apache.
Running config test I get:
apachectl configtest
Syntax error on line 8 of /etc/apache/modules.conf:
Cannot add module via name 'mod_mime.c': not in list of loaded modules
What do I need to do?
Also, let me explain why I am adding this module. Perhaps I'm going
about it wrong.
We are now hosting a Russian language web page. When you go to that
page it won't start up in Russian no matter what you do on the client
side. I thought there was a problem with the "charset=" line in the
html file. But then I was told that the problem is that you have to
enable apache to use a foreign language as a possible default language.

One thing I did was add the following text in httpd.conf for this
virtual host:

DocumentRoot /var/www/VirtualHost/
ServerName www.VirtualHost.com
DefaultLanguage ru
LanguagePriority ru
But I also noticed the docs on Content Negotiation at:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/content-negotiation.html
which led me to the idea that I need to install a mime module. Anyhow,
I'm quite confused at this point and hope somebody can give me some
direction.

W2K connectivity to Samba server

2004-10-22 Thread Curtis Vaughan
Anyone have any ideas about the following problem.
We have a W2K Advanced Server as a PDC in a domain: WINDOMAIN
And we have a Samba 2.x server as the PDC (through LDAP & PAM) of
another domain: LINUXDOMAIN

Any computer in WINDOMAIN can access shares on any computer (Linux,
Windows, etc.) in LINUXDOMAIN (provided the appropriate credentials are
used for LINUXDOMAIN) except the W2K PDC. No matter what, it cannot
access any shares in LINUXDOMAIN. It just keeps reasking for the login
and password, saying that the previous login/password attempt was:
"Incorrect password or unknown user name for:"

NB: We also have an NT4 domain: NT4DOMAIN, which the W2K PDC accesses
just fine.

Of course, I use the convention LINUXDOMAIN\username for logging in.
Any input would be most appreciated.
Thanks!

HUB with multiple LANs?

do I have to put the other LAN on another HUB?

Mail server in DMZ

2004-09-23 Thread Curtis Vaughan
Here's what I want to do, I'm just not sure about the best solution.
We have IPCop as the gateway server (doing port forwarding and
maintaining 2 VPNs).
Behind it, we have 1 Postfix server w/Courier IMAP and 1 Exchange 5.5
Server (soon to be moved to another Postfix server).

I want to put a mail server in the DMZ, whose sole purpose will be to:
1) authenticate all users for SMTP w/SSL;
2) accept all incoming mail and only relay that mail for internal
recipients to the appropriate recipient.

I think that's it for now.
So, if I put postfix and Courier IMAP on that server, as well as all
accounts and passwords, would that be an appropriate solution?

Also, I'm a little confused as to how a mail server in the DMZ would
route mail to the internal network. Or is that something it wouldn't
have to worry about, but IPCop would (since it's the router).

Thanks for any input.

I'm not the one who developed this stuff, it just works under Red Hat.
Kevin Mark has suggested I provide the changes done to RedHat to an
OpenSource development community, which I'm all for. But I have no

taking what was done on our RedHat server and applying it to other

Of course I set up a swap partition. This computer has been running for
years with a swap partition. Tomorrow I can tell you exactly what size I
even gave it. However, I recently decided to update to sarge. I thought
everything was running fine. But I noticed it seemed to crash at times.
Something totally unexpected for Linux, particularly Debian. Only now
have I noticed that I seemingly have no swap partition. So, what could
have possibly cause the swap to disappear when upgrading to sarge
(testing)?

burning a VCD with xcdroast

2004-07-27 Thread Curtis Vaughan
Sorry, if this is not really a Debian question, but I am getting really
frustrated trying to figure this out.

I have created an mpg file (MPEG1) and authored it for vcd. After
authoring it, a second mpg file was created along with a xml file. Now
originally I thought I just had to burn my first mpg file to a disk and
pop it in my DVD player (which does support vcd files). However, it
complained that the data was incorrect. Someone stated that I needed
to probably author the mpg file and another person said that instead of
creating a vcd I probably just created a data cd.

So my question is this: I am using xcdroast. I think I have correctly
authored the mpg file. So now do I just burn the 2 files to a disk or
is there some special way I need to burn it? For example, maybe I need
to create an iso or I've seen a lot of mention of cue and bin files.

I have been spending 2 days nows looking for the correct way to do this
on the net, but to no luck. Everyone mostly says, oh, use Nero or this
or that program, blah, blah, blah....

You're wrong. Proftpd can do ftps if you use the mod_ssl. You can read
man sftp to get rough look at what sftp is. In short it is a subsystem

OpenSSH [1] that provides a ftp like interface using the sshd from
openssh

You probably don't need to specify the 'install' option at all. Since
you dist-upgrade'd, I assume you are at lilo > 22.3. It should default
to 'menu', which is probably what you want.

See 'man lilo.conf' for the 'install' option.

(mvs being a sony audio file type)

The only thing I've been able to come up with is converting to wav and
then to mp3.
Or, perhaps there's a utility to convert mvs to wav (I'm not aware of a
linux utility for this) and then piping that through to a utility for
converting wav to mp3 all in one command line?

Laptop net card module

2004-03-19 Thread Curtis Vaughan
After installing Debian on a laptop everything was working fine.

Then after updating to 2.4.18, however, the pcmcia netcard doesn't work.

I've determined the following:

The module [xirc2ps_cs.o] isn't installed. It seems to be related to
another module: ds.o, but when I try to install ds.o, I get the
following error: no socket drivers loaded. This error also pops up
during boot. So, it would seem that I have to install sockets?

The insmod error for ds.o seems also related to the fact that the IO or
IRQ parameters are invalid. Do I need to insmod ds.o with parameters?

Thanks.

Permission change - recursive

2004-03-13 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I just noticed that for an entire directory of files and folders, the
permissions are not really right.

Or maybe it doesn't matter. I went ahead and changed all permission
recursively, but feel that permissions should be as follows: for all
files 660, whereas for all directories 770. Has anyone written a
script that will drill through a directory and change all the
permissions in such a manner?

SSL SMTP Relay in DMZ

2004-02-07 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I don't know how to correctly title this letter, but hopefully people
have an idea of what I'm trying to do. I'm posting this to the Debian
list, as it has to do with computing in general more than just mail
servers.

What I want to know is if the following is possible, and, if so, what
possible options there are.

I would like to set up a mail server in a DMZ that would accept mail
only from those clients who have authenticated using SSL. Given that
they have successfully passed that criteria, then this DMZ mail server
would pass the mail off to an internal mail server for further
delivery.

Thanks for any input!

Keyboard & Mouse issue under X11

I finally got my keyboard to work under X11 by reconfiguring xserver so

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

Rdesktop users?

2004-01-04 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I've put this question on the rdesktop list, but there seems to be only
a post every couple of days (in other words, no reply).

Anyhow, I have a problem using rdesktop. I know I have read a solution
for this problem before, but now I can't find it.
Basically, when I try to connect to a Terminal Server (whether I use
1.2.x or 1.3.0) I get the error that it cannot connect. As I recall it
had something to do with forcing the Terminal Server to think the
client had a built in license. There was a particular option one would
add to the rdesktop command to do this. But now I can find no such
documentation.

Can anyone help?

Re: vncserver question

2004-01-03 Thread Curtis Vaughan
Well, unfortunately, running vncpasswd gives me the exact same error.

ls -ls ~/.vnc produces

drwxr-xr-x2 curtis curtis 4096 Jan 2 18:21
/home/curtis/.vnc

So, maybe it is a bug. It seems when searching for an answer someone
brought up an issue with bash versus other shells. Could the issue
have something to do with running it under a certain shell?

What's the solution?
Ok well this seems like a simple problem.

What command are you using to run the server? I believe the correct
command is:
vncserver
Are you sure that ~/.vnc exists and has proper permissions? What is the
output of:
ls -ld ~/.vnc
on my system it gives:
drwxr-xr-x2 bijanbijan4096 Jan 3 01:27
/home/bijan/.vnc

It might also be that the environment variable HOME does not agree with
what is stored in the system (usually in /etc/passwd) and vncserver is
checking the wrong one. If this is the case and HOME is correct but
/etc/passwd is wrong, then I personally think that this is a bug in
the vncserver program. I think that programs should use HOME, because
the user always knows best.
This shouldn't be a problem but the first time you run vncserver it
should
run vncpasswd to create ~/.vnc/passwd, you might want to try running it
manually.
If none of the above fixes the problem then you may have found a bug
in the vncserver package. You should check the bug tracking system
to see if someone has reported a similar bug and if not you should
report it.

Geological tracking application

2003-11-14 Thread Curtis Vaughan
Is anyone aware of Linux-based application capable of proving visual geographical tracking?

To be more specific:
We are a fishing company. Every daily we receive reports from our vessels about their location, water temp and depth, fish caught, weather, fuel, etc., etc.
This data is entered into a database. It would great to have an application that could take that data and put it on a map. This way we could track trends, perform historical analyses, etc.

I realize there is probably nothing specifically that meets our needs, but close enough that with a little reprogramming would, in fact, work.

allowed to log in. I can't log in under any other user period. Now,
this may be due to the fact that I have a home directory on this
server, no one else does.
It could be, I know that proftpd will allow you to "chroot" ftp
sessions
to the user's home dir. I think you have to do that on purpose though.
Have you tested your pam_ldap setup with other services to make sure it
is correct? I think the default setup requires the user to have a valid
shell (listed in /etc/shells) did you check that? What does "getent
passwd username" show for a user who can't log on. Also, make sure that
"AuthPAM on" is in your config file.

As for the default path for users to see (mentioned in another message)
I believe that all you need is a section like this: "DefaultRoot
/home/ftp" or whatever path.
It sounds like you really need to take a few minutes to go through the
manpage for proftpd.conf to get a general overview of the options
before
you start trying to wrangle the config file.

I've got it installed and kind of operating, but how do I make it
default to /home/ftp whenever ANYONE logs in.

Right now I need to set up an ftp site that authenticated users can
only access in order to download files. Authentication in our network

is provided by LDAP w/PAM. I see that proftp has an LDAP package,
which I have installed right now. So, it seems at first the better.
Ultimately, we may be setting up additional Virtual hosts.
I use proftpd and find it to be very flexible. It takes a little time
setting it up but works great.

proftp or wu-ftp?

Inventory Databases

2003-07-28 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I am wondering what advice people have about the following:

Our company needs to keep track of purchased inventory (when purchased,
how much, where it's located), etc. Also, we would want to keep a db on
analogous products, who they are sold by, their prices, etc.

Now, here is what the acounting dept. is planning on doing. Whereas they
already use Great Plains Dynamics (Microsoft) for all accounting
activities, and whereas there is apparently a module that you can
purchase that performs these functions, they plan on purchasing this
module (despite some shortcomings).

My issue is that: great move buying a product that's going to cost $$$,
then licenses $$$, then well, we'll have to have SQL licenses and we'
have to purchase multiple copies of SQL , and then ..

Surely there is some other option.

I would appreciate any ideas people have. BTW, I have looked at NOLA
and it's not what we will need. Also, I don't care whether it costs,
but what other options are there.

Locked desktop issue

2003-07-15 Thread Curtis Vaughan
I have this problem that sometimes when typing in Russian, I have
accidentally hit a combination of keys (which I don't actually know)
which puts my computer in a locked desktop status. That would be OK,
except that I was in a Russian keyboard input mode and you can't change
the input mode when the desktop is locked. In other words, I can't
enter my password. The only way out is to kill kde and restart. Is
anyone aware of a way to prevent this? i.e., either enabling language
switching while the desktop is locked, or forcing the keyboard to switch
to English when the desktop is locked?

Maybe this is just a matter of bad disk? Can you try another disk,
preferably a new one?
