[smarty-gettext] with PHP5 on Sarge

2006-03-31 Thread Davi Leal
Hi,

I would like to install smarty-gettext, with php5, on a Sarge host.

I have installed in the Sarge host these precompiled packages:
  apache2  2.0.54from Sarge
  libapache2-mod-php5  5.0.5 backport to Sarge
  smarty   2.6.9 from Sarge
  gettext-base 0.14.4from Sarge

smarty-gettext is in 'testing' and 'unstable' but it depends on php4-cli. How
to install it on this Sarge host. Should I compile and install smarty-gettext
by hand?.

Any advice about using other set of packages is welcome.

Regards,
Davi

Sarge: Software RAID1

2005-05-29 Thread Davi Leal
Hi,

I have installed Debian GNU/Linux Sarge on IDE Software RAID1, kernel
2.4.27-2-k7, however I had only one disk at that time, so I setup a RAID1
with only one disk.

I bought another disk. I have added the second disk to the RAID1 with
  mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/hdc1
and I have added /dev/hdc1 to the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file. See attached.

Now, If I reboot the host, the disk which I have added with 'mdadm' and
configured at 'mdadm.conf' is not used. See attached the dmesg output.

However, If I
  * compile a custom kernel-image 2.4.27 with the RAID1 module in kernel,
  * boot on that kernel,
  * execute "mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/hdc1" again,
  * and reboot
both disks are used!.
If I reboot again using the official sarge 2.4.27-2-k7 kernel only one disk is
used again.

I remember when I installed the host, and setup the raid, I set the disk as
ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,1 or something similar. Note that the
dmesg output reports it is using that partition but not the one of the second
hard disk, which was added with 'mdadm'.

What file must I modify to be able to use both disks, using the official
2.4.27-2-k7 kernel image ?.

kernel-image 2.6.2 - XFS support

2004-02-18 Thread Davi Leal
Why kernel-image 2.6.2-2 deb package does not boot a XFS root filesystem?. I
know, because I would like it include that support.

2004-01-17 Thread Davi Leal
What about this kind of errors?

  ldconfig: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.200.4 is not an ELF file - it has
the wrong magic bytes at the start.

There are a lot of them in the last 'sid' update.

Yes, I know it. However, packages are updated frequently, so with security
bugs fixed. Maybe with new bugs due to new source code, but with old bugs
fixed. Note that I plan install woody (Debian stable, with security update)
on the server and use the new host as I+D and desktop (Debian unstable).

I have applied this work around: "ln -s /usr/share/sendmail/update_conf
/usr/sbin/update_conf", but the sendmail daemon does not run.

 * If I execute "/etc/init.d/sendmail start" the system shows:
Starting Mail Transport Agent: Sendmailsendmail has not been
configured, not started.
To configure sendmail, type sendmailconfig

 * So, I execute "sendmailconfig" again:
Configure sendmail with the existing /etc/mail/sendmail.conf? [Y]
Reading configuration from /etc/mail/sendmail.conf.
Validating configuration.
Writing configuration to /etc/mail/sendmail.conf.
Writing /etc/cron.d/sendmail.
Configure sendmail with the existing /etc/mail/sendmail.mc? [Y]
Reload the running sendmail now with the new configuration? [Y]
Reloading sendmail ...

 * I execute "ps -el | grep sendmail" and it does not show anything!

Reading
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=pkg&data=sendmail&archive
=no I have thought to install the package from testing or unstable.

http://packages.debian.org/stable/mail/sendmail.html
Package: sendmail 8.12.3-4

http://packages.debian.org/testing/mail/sendmail.html
Package: sendmail 8.12.5-1

http://packages.debian.org/unstable/mail/sendmail.html
Package: sendmail 8.12.6-4

Installing the sendmail package from "testing" or from "unstable" solves the
problem, that is to say, it gets the sendmail process running, but it shows
the below message. Is that message important?.

Starting Mail Transport Agent: sendmailWarning: Cannot use
HostStatusDirectory
 = /var/lib/sendmail/host_status: No such file or directory
.

sendmail server too slow

2002-09-03 Thread Davi Leal

Hi,

The problem is that connecting from 80.25.136.215 to the 194.224.7.3 SMTP
server takes 25 seconds to show the 220 line. Note the FORGED tag.

$ telnet 194.224.7.3 25

The entry in the /var/log/syslog file in the SMTP server is:

Note that connecting from another machine, located in the same LAN than the
SMTP server, shows the "220 ..." line immediately, and without the FORGED
tag.

The idea is to use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse on Alt+F7 to one

move the mouse only the console which is on the monitor-display (Alt+F7 or

kernel-image-2.4.18-686 package && initrd

2002-03-17 Thread Davi Leal
Installing the kernel-image-2.4.18-686 package I get:

You are attempting to install an initrd kernel image (version 2.4.18-686)
This will not work unless you have configured your boot loader to use
initrd.
As a reminder, in order to configure lilo, you need to
add an 'initrd=/initrd.img' in your /etc/lilo.conf
I repeat, You need to configure your boot loader. If you have already done
so, and you wish to get rid of this message, please put
  `do_initrd = Yes'
in /etc/kernel-img.conf.
Do you want to stop now? [Y/n]

My original installation, which I have upgraded, is from a woody CD-ROM with
2.2.20 kernel. I am running now a 2.4.18 kernel compiled from source (make
xconfig dep bzImage modules modules_install + lilo). Note that I do not
use-compile initrd ramdisk support on it. Why my compiled 2.4.18 kernel
works rightly and the downloaded ask me for all this issues?.

I am sure that I am missing something. Can the 2.4.18 kernel boot with and
without using initrd?. If so, why does debian use initrd?. Is it quicker?.

I am not an expert, anyhow, I think the *outgoing* connections are
allowed. See below:

# Output rules
#
# ipfwadm -O -l
IP firewall output rules, default policy: deny
type  prot source   destination   ports
acc   ALL  X.X.X.0/25   0.0.0.0/0 n/a
acc   ALL  0.0.0.0/0X.X.X.0/25n/a

And the machine which has the issue has the below allowed:

# Input rules
#
# ipfwadm -I -l | grep 5
acc   TCP  0.0.0.0/0X.X.X.5* -> 80
acc   TCP  0.0.0.0/0X.X.X.580,443 -> 1024:65535
acc   TCP  0.0.0.0/0X.X.X.5119,81,20,21 -> 1024:65535
   ^
   ^

The X.X.X.5 host is behind the firewall. Why pointing apt-get to
ftp.de.debian.org raises a "Connection time out" message after
Login-Connecting successfully?. The "Packages" file is not downloaded
any byte (0%). Note: I can use "lynx" and "ftp" rightly on the X.X.X.5
host. I can even download the "Packages" file using the "ftp" command.
Uhmm, ... Is it needed enable the UDP protocol to use "apt-get"?.

# ipfwadm -I -l | grep 5
acc   TCP  0.0.0.0/0X.X.X.5* -> 80
acc   TCP  0.0.0.0/0X.X.X.580,443 -> 1024:65535
acc   TCP  0.0.0.0/0X.X.X.5119,81,20,21 -> 1024:65535
   ^
   ^

Do you know any SMTP, FTP, firewall, DNS, POP3, ... server which uses
Debian and "apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade" in cron to fix the
security bugs automatically?. Is it usual?.

Hi all,

--- OpenBSD 2.9 (or any other version)
  versus    "iptables" GNU/Linux 2.4.x ---

If GNU/Linux is chosen, is Debian GNU/Linux
'testing' (woody) the right distribution?. No 'potato' due to it uses 2.2.x
kernels.

I think that the subjects which must be taken into
account to evaluate the Operating System and distribution to use must
be:

    - The security, stability, ...
of the Operating System / distribution    -
The functionality level of the filter, for example: linux 2.2.x versus
2.4.x

Is OpenBSD more secure than GNU/Linux?.

Is the functionality level of the 2.4.x filter the
same/greater/lower than the OpenBSD filter?.

Why do I not get answer from the 'named' daemon?. I think it is not due to
/etc/hosts.allow or deny options. The bind/README.Debian file does not say
anything about.

Yes, I think I have additional routing to do because of the host has a set
of virtual inferfaces: eth0:0, ..., eth0:17. Each virtual IP is used to one
extra domain name.

Is not there a file to configure this additonal routes, as with
'interfaces'?. If no, have you any idea to realize it?.

All Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r3:

bind 8.2.3
qpopper 2.53 instead of ipopd 4.7c
sendmail 8.9.3

Debian GNU/Linux as email & DNS server

2001-10-09 Thread Davi Leal

Hi all,

I am going to use a debian box as email and DNS
server. The goal is duplicate the functionality of a host which is using
sendmail, xinetd (pop3) & bind. I have thought to use:

    debian 2.2r3
(potato)

sendmail instead of exim,
to facilitate the duplication of the existing host.
xinetd (pop3)

    bind

Must I use woody instead of potato?

Any comment?

Note: I have choosen debian as default option
due to its 'apt-get' utility. It is easy install the automatic system of
fixing security bug using the proper debian server, althought debian does not
offer a Journaling FS or a installation over software RAID.

debian 2.2 + kernel 2.2.18 + USB

2000-12-17 Thread Davi Leal
I have debian 2.2 installed on my host. I have downloaded the
kernel.2.2.18.tar.gz and I have compiled it with USB support so as to use my
USB modem on Linux. But the '/sbin/hotplug' does not appear. Maybe, is there
a .deb file which I could download and install directly which keeps all the
scripts and tools what I need to set up USB support on my host?.

Any comment?.
