Do you print, do you burn CDs, do you transfer photos from your camera? If you do, and on top of that in KDE (gasp!), you will have had breakage in the last six months on several occasions. I think what you are saying is that if your are very carefull (read lots of lists), and if you don't use a desktop manager, *then* you won't have breakage for years. Ok. I can accept that. Re: console keyboard setup question
Thanks! with your hint I did an apt-cache search on "keymap" and found console-data, a dpkg-reconfigre console-data and subsequenty on console-common followed by a reboot got my keyboard set correctly. My console still wont display umlauts though, I still need to figure out how to set that up. I have chosen de-utf8 with dpkg-reconfigure locales, but I just want to be able to see the characters, not change the language of my system. console keyboard setup question
I have a sarge system that was upgraded from woody a while back. At some point during an apt-get update/upgrade my keyboard and locale settings were lost. My console keyboard settings seem to have reverted to default, but kbdconfig returns "Looking for keymap to install: None". I need to set my keyboard to german, and I'd like to keep the system language english, but be able to display umlauts in directory and file names. It worked in woody, but I can't seem to get it working again, it doesn't seem to be part of base-config anymore. Any hints would be greatly appreciated, Chris -- C. sane - scanner question
I'm trying to get my scanner working. It's listed under /proc/bus/usb/ as shown below. Hotplug loads libusbscanner with some chown errors also shown below. When I start kooka, I'm not presented with my scanner as an optional input device. How can I further trace this problem. I guess theres something wrong with the way the hotplug script is trying to change permissions on the usb device, but I don't really know where to go from there. Hi, I have the same thing happening. The display dims at some point during booting. I don't think it has anything to do with hotplug though, because removing it didn't change anything on my system. Hi, I'm running Debian Testing, and have noticed that my syslog, kern.log, and debug.log files are too large (over 100Mb). I looked in logrotate.conf and logrotate.d, but didn't find anything that would rotate these files. Aren't these files rotated in a "standard" installation? I also noticed that the logrotate entry in cron.daily only points at logrotate.conf, but what about the logrotate.d entries, how do they get loaded? qestion about Locales
Hi, I've installed Debian Testing/Unstable with the default Locale, and would like to keep English as the primary language of the system. On the other hand, I also need to be able to use the German umlaut (äöü) characters. In KDE I've set the Locale to Germany with English and German as languages, and that works as you can see in my email. But the system itself doesn't deal with or can't display the umlauts, for insance in directory and file names, or in the console. I've used dpkg-reconfigure locales to select one of the ISO DE locales, but nothing changed in console, I can't type umlauts and they arent displayed in existing names. What else do I need to do, and how do I keep English as the primary language? Thaks, Christof -- Dr.-Ing. C. I've checked, but there isn't a newer version of the source available, fcdslsl-suse8.2-03.11.02.tar.gz seems to be the latest version, and the manufacturer claims not to know anything about Debian. Initially only two fonts were aviailable (charter and courier, I believe). I then installed msttcorefonts and x-ttcidfont-conf (ignoring the message about adding FontPath entires to XF86Config-4) and now seem to have lots of fonts available. I did notice that in the font dropdown that some of the Fonts with the box and 1 symbol (not sure what it's really supposed to be, type 1 perhaps) don't display in the list or when typed in the text, such as "Fangsong Ti". All the fonts with the A-A symbold are ok. 1.1.0 seems a big improvement!! Much faster startups!!! Re: ethernet routing
I've been reading up on home networking to set up a router using my linux box. I'd simply like to make its DSL connection and firewall available to other compures, like my laptop, and that's about it. Re: 56K Modems
I know you guys are talking about external modems, and I'd aggree that they're probably easier to get running than an internal modem, but I bought a Smart Link 56K Modem (Internal) over ebay for a couple of euros and got it running under Woody as a relative newbie. I had to compile the module for it, but the instructions were fairly easy to follow, and if it had really been hard I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten it to work. The modem worked fine. ide-scsi Question
Hi, I'm running ide-scsi because I want to use cdrdao. Unfortunately ide-scsi intermittantly hangs on boot on my cdrom drive with a "lost interupt" error and enters an endless loop in which it continously times out. I havn't found a way to get out of this loop without reseting the computer. I didn't have any problems with the drive before I loaded the ide-scsi module (using modconf). I unplug the drives power to get it to boot now... Thanks for any suggestions, Chris -- Dr.-Ing. C. Re: Installing Printer - CUPS **SOLVED**
Thanks! that was the problem. I hadn't manually configured the pnm2ppa package. I have to say that this is a problem with debian. I had to install a slew of packages to get cups to work, basically by trial and error. Some packages simply work upon installation, some don't (pnm2ppa). There was no notification upon installation of pnm2ppa that I needed to edit the config file and copy it to /etc/ for pnm2ppa to work. it just happily installed itself in a non-fuctioning mode on my computer. NOT very nice. Chris On Friday 12 December 2003 04:33, Paul Stolp wrote: > * Dr.-Ing. C. gs -h (6.53-3) doesn't show the driver I need (pnm2ppa) which seem odd because it's supposed to support every driver. I get a Ghostsript unrecoverable error in the error_log file. ??? Hi, I'm having trouble getting my local printer working (HP Deskjet 710C) . I'm running woody with KDE3.1.4. I've installed: cupsys cupsys-client cupsys-bsd cupsomatic-ppd a2ps mpage enscript cupsys-driver-gimpprint pnm2ppa foomatic-db gsfonts-other hpijs cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/autoprobe shows my printer, and I've got the modules parport and parport_pc loaded. I installed the printer using the Control-Center:Peripherals:Printer and tried printing a test page, which shows up as a print job and is "processed" but never reaches the printer. there are no erros in the cups log files. Does anyone have a tip for what I can try next? Thanks, Chris -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Connection refused.. / Could not connect
I'm getting a Connection refused error (Mozilla 1.5, Firebird 0.6.1, Konquerer 3.1.3, Lynx...) when trying to accesss some sites from my testing/unstable box, for example http://www.simpleware.co.uk/. I assume it might be some network protocol problem because I have no problem connecting from Win with the same box. Any suggestions? Thanks, Chris -- Dr.-Ing. C. Re: Night mare to set day light savings time
Isn't this just a matter of re-running base-config and setting the hardware clock to UMT, as is suggested when running a dual boot system with windows? is there a dpkg-reconfigure that will get you into just the time settings part of base-config? Re: openoffice in woody
search in apt-get.org for backports for woody. I've got OpenOffice 1.1 installed and from what I can tell it runs fine. Chris Am Donnerstag, 6. No I don't want to sound like I'm complaining either. In fact I'm very gratefull for the work they've done, and the whole thing is still really amazing to me. Re: why is debian the only distribution that won't let me run X?
I disagree. It even took me a while to figure out what settings I needed to get my wheel-mouse to work. It also took me a while to realize that I needed to load kernel video drivers in order for the xfree86 driver (mga in this case to work). And I didn't find the remark about "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" in the config file for a while either. There are lots of things that aren't at all obvious to a newbie that isn't necessarily a computer professional of some sort trying to get Debian installed the first time. I did it, and I'm glad I did, but simply telling someone to just read the prompts isn't helpful. Re: More on spam
It's happening to me too. I have a spam filter on my isp that takes care of normal spam well, but the swen stuff still gets through. I filter that myself like someone on this list suggested by deleting mesages with "multipart/alternative" or "multipart/mixed". If my isp didn't have decent filters I'd be SOL. But I'm kind of wondering about how swen is still getting propogated so much. Are there really that many infected computers who's users don't know it??? The sender addresses don't seem to be real addresses on the swen mails I get. Chris Am Freitag, 17.
