Outlook clients and Linux Debian

2007-01-31 Thread Hervé Piedvache
Hi,

I have at the office a part of Windows users using Outlook ... others are
under Gnu/Linux Debian ... all the services (mail, files server, printer
servers are under linux) ...
My Outlook users would like to share their calendars ... in fact when one make
an appointment in his calendar with another guy he wants to know if the other
guy have or not an appointment at the same time ...
For this the classical solution should be to add an exchange server ... but
you might understand that I don't want to do this ...

What kind of solution could I find to this stuff under a Debian Linux
service ?

Thanks per advance for your answers ...

PSC 2350 and hpoj with SID ...

2005-12-18 Thread Hervé Piedvache
Hello,

I have a serious trouble to make running hpoj with my PSC 2350 ...

I'm using a Debian in SID ... with a hand made kernel 2.6.13.1

I have connected the printer in USB ...

less /proc/bus/usb/devices :

So it seems that the usblp and usb-storage are here ...

But :
ptal-init setup give me alway this answer ...

Probe for USB-connected devices ([y]/n)?

Probing "/dev/usb/lp0"...
*** Found "PSC 2350 series" but failed to communicate with it!
*** Elapsed time for this attempt was 0 second(s).
*** Check syslog file for ptal-mlcd error messages.
*** See hpoj documentation for troubleshooting information.

I haven't find any solution in the documentation ...
For your information I'm printing perfectly on my printer using CUPS with this
configuration :
# Printer configuration file for CUPS v1.1.23
# Written by cupsd on dim 18 déc 2005 03:22:43 CET

So what can I do to make hpoj running ?? I want to use xsane for scanning ...
and I haven't found any solution ... thanks per advance ...

Hi,

I'm using SID ... and on several computers since last update ... I get this
message from Amarok

#amarok
amaroK: [Loader] Starting amarokapp..
amaroK: [Loader] Don't run gdb, valgrind, etc. against this binary! Use
amarokapp.
QObject::connect: Cannot connect Engine::Base::statusText( const QString& ) to
(null)::shortMessage( const QString& )
QObject::connect: Cannot connect Engine::Base::infoMessage( const QString& )
to (null)::longMessage( const QString& )
QLayout: Adding KToolBar/mainToolBar (child of QVBox/unnamed) to layout for

KCrash: Application 'amarok' crashing...

Is there any solution ?

I have lost some fonts ...

In my font selector I was seeing fonts like :
Fixed [Etl]
Fixed [Jis]
Fixed [Misc]
Fixed [Sony]
Freemonospaced
Gothic [Daewoo]
Gothic [Mplus]
Itc Zapf Chancery [Adobe]
Itc Zapf Chancery [Itc]
Terminal [Bistream]
Terminal [Dec]
Zapf Chancery
Zapt Dingbats
courier [Adobe]
courier [Bitsream]
courier [Urw]
helvetica [Adobe]
helvetica [Urw]

But now I don't have any of this fonts ... I do not see any font with "[ ]"
next to the name ...

I have only one Fixed font, but I have a Courier,  and Courier 10 Pitch that I
haven't got before ??

So where are my fonts ? In fact with xfontsel I can see my Fixed Sony, and
other Fixed Jis ... but not with any KDE application ??

I have one point to add to my trouble ... I have a laptop installed last week
from a classical woody install CD, and upgrade immediatly in Unstable ...
without starting X during the complete install ... Then I have itc zapf
chancery [adobe] or Helvetica [adobe] and Fixed [Jis] or Fixed [Sony] on this
configuration ... that I don't see on my PC !!

I have copied the /etc/fonts folder from the laptop to my PC, and also
compared the fonts packages installed on the two computer to be in same
situation ... but still without any result on my PC !! :o((

So not a fontconfig trouble ... so Where is the trouble ?

Thanks for your help !

I have seen those options ... but I have tried them without any result ! :o((
The documentation seems to be clear ... but I have tried also each options for
Caps Lock without any result :o(

May be a missing package or another parameter somewhere else ...

Any idea are well done ;o)

May be because that's a specific thing for European version, but for us in
France Windows 95/98/98SE had this option by default ... and for Windows
2000/XP we have to check an option in the Keyboard parameters ...

The keyboard particularities seems to be important in the word ... ;o)

But, like Slaanesh, I would like to make this running with KDE, and the last
KDE3.2 seems to give options like this ... but they are not working ... or we
don't know how to !?

But may be like the Screensavers gived with KDE 3.2 by default are not working
without xscreensaver and xscreensaver-gl package (and the information are not
clearly gived), So we may missed a package for making running well this part
of KDE, but for the moment we don't find any solution ! :o(

KDE 3.2 - Where is the previus "The Matrix" Screensaver ?

2004-03-10 Thread Hervé Piedvache
Hi,

Why in the v3.2.1 of KDE in Debian, we have lost the "The Matrix" screensaver
we had before ... this version can't be configured and seems to be just a
fixed animation ... ??

Where can I find the original version ??

Thanks and regards,

Which hardware constructors for Debian ? :o(

2004-03-04 Thread Hervé Piedvache
Hi all,

Which constructor for Debian ... ?

We are a french company and we have some clients interested in our
developments ... We make some developments exclusively on Debian.
One of our major clients needs a big hardware configuration : something like 4
To of hard disk for a web site application, serving about 40 millions pages a
day ... So you can imagine the hardware configuration needed !

We used to work with Dell, or Hewlett-Packard, but with smaller
configurations ... As usual, we called them to get some proposals of such
hardware configurations ...

Here we need both speed and lots of disk space ... Dell told us, that we could
use a fiber solution made by Emc constructor and sold by Dell. OK, why not ?!
Trouble is that Dell does not want us to run it in a Debian environment...
Official reason is : "Impossible to get a support for this kind of products,
if you are using a Debian OS ... this solution is only certified for Red Hat
Advanced Server ! and may be Suse, but we are in a testing process..." So
what can we do ? Dell's answer : "Use Red Hat and nothing else." :o(( Which
means that we have to buy 150 000 euro machine (+/- the same in dollars) and
face all the risks in case of troubles, without any support from Dell ...

For information, last January I went to Paris Linux Expo and talked to Dell's
representant who made it clear : no support for Debian with Dell's
machines ... never !! because Debian, unlike Red Hat or Suse, is not a real
company... so impossible for Dell to have someone to negotiate with to get a
real support and no one to take to court, if things happen to turn badly ...
you see what I mean ... :o(

Then we called Hewlett-Packard (we have about 10 servers from them in
production in a Debian environment) and we have learned recently that
Hewlett-Packard has started to support Debian project (official announce seen
in Decembre 2003) ... So why haven't we thought of them before ... ?? ;o)
So, we called HP-France and the answer was straight-forward : "No,
Hewlett-Packard does not support Debian for the moment ... where have you
seen that ?!! Red Hat, Suse and United Linux are the only supported
distributions !" ... Hugh !?

So what could we do ?
Does anyone is currently using such a configuration in a Debian environment ?
Could anyone help us in finding a good hardware configuration, and/or some
good contacts working for those constructors or any others to get an
agreement for Debian use ? Does the Debian team could help us with
Hewlett-Packard ... if it's true that Hewlett-Packard is supporting Debian ?

Waiting for your reply,

regards,

Re: Font Mystery

2004-02-04 Thread Hervé Piedvache
Steven,

Did you also loosed the Fixed[Sony] and Fixed[Jis] fonts ??

Since I have updated from Woody to SID ... I have the same trouble of you, and
I also loosed those fonts but only under KDE ... I can choose them with
xemacs ... but impossible under KDE ??!
My font under Konsole is really ugly ... and I have also loosed the Helvetica
font :o((

Could it be in relation with the bug detailed here ?
http://lists.debian.org/debian-qt-kde/2004/debian-qt-kde-200402/msg00027.html

I have reproduced also this trouble under GNOME in my 3 PC configurations
under SID after the migration from Woody ... :o(

And no solution of the moment ... including testing the x-font guide from
here :
http://egads.ertius.org/~rob/font_guide.txt

Re: X fonts problem

I think we have the same trouble ...
I have upgraded recently from woody to unstable ...
Then I loosed some fonts ... first I loosed Helvetica font, and also all my
Fixed [Jis] and Fixed [Sony] fonts ... may be others but I use mainly
Helvetica and Fixed [Jis] for Kate or Konsole ...

> I've also a strange error message in my X log :

I have also this ... not many times ... but regulary in the log ...

> So if anybody here can tell me how to correct these stuffs ;)

For the moment ... I have solved my trouble with Helvetica ... but just
removing the comments in the /etc/fonts/local.conf of the
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts
Like this I get the Helvetica font again in the list ... but the font is not
like before with the woody ... seems to be antialiased ... but not beautiful
on the screen ... :o( (and the aliasing option is uncheck in the KDE options)

If anyone have an idea to get back Helvetica in good look, and also my
favorites Fixed font ... I'll be very pleased !
