WVDial

SS Has anyone gotten wvdial to work with static IP? ISDN?

What's the problem with fixed IP on a dial-up? Is your ISDN treated like
a modem? (I know nothing about ISDN) If so you could try editing the
/etc/wvdial.conf file and put the correct init strings in there

SS Have you tried the package wvdial that is in _some_ of the Debian
SS distributions? (Certainly in frozen).

Very easy to configure and it seems to work. IMO the ppp stuff is a
nightmare - before finding wvdial I had ended up with a one-line script
with all my ppp options in it as I couldn't get ppp to work any longer
(happened when I upgraded to a newer version on the ppp packages)

IB Thanks to all that try to help in my problem with ppp and Netscape.
IB have done what Steve suggested: to remove the '\r' from the ppp.chat
IB wasn't my idea to put them there, it was just what I have found in s
IB documentation about how to set the ppp. Those guys that are writing
IB us, the beginners, should be more careful, I think.

IB So now my ppp is up with pon and down with poff. There are still mor
IB do, but as I am concerned, this thread is ended.
IB Thanks again to all that gave my suggestions and please forgive me f
IB expressing these thanks sooner. The last two weeks were awful and I

SH So it looks like PERL5 got screwed up, yes?

SH What can I do to replace the proper minimal items so that dselect (a

on my system dpkg --help | less works fine. The person who had trouble
with it said it did not work for him/her. Now the problem would be because
their dpkg --help writes to STDERR and not STDOUT. In which case will
 trap them both in csh's.

Right. It was me who had the problem :) It seems it is considered a bug, as
help should normally got to STDOUT.

Bash on the otherhand uses numbers. From bash man pages STDERR is 2 but I
have no idea how to use it.

I am a relative newbie, so haven't looked at other shells, so now I know what
does in csh :) 2 does the same in bash.

I suspect I've done something daft, but I've done various things and checked it

Off-line newsreader

1998-01-25 Thread Ian Watkins
Thanks for all you folks who replied to me regarding an off-line news
reader.

I d/led slrn and configured it, but as a couple of you suspected it
_doesn't_ support d/l of just headers and the picking of interesting
articles. I can't afford to d/l all the newsgroups I keep up with - some
of them have over 100 messages a day, so I'm still looking for a true
off-line news reader like the one I have in Windows at the moment g

I had another look at Netscape, but when I was off-line it seemed to
want to go to the server everytime I selected a new newsgroup (or just
clicked on it). This was rather annoying (understatement), but I might
have had something not setup quite right - or NS doesn't really do off-
line news reading

If anybody else has any other suggestions I'll be glad to hear them...

SEUL packaging, etc.

1998-01-18 Thread Ian Watkins
FE I would like to make it almost trivial for a user to install a
FE package, i.e. click in a hypertext help/wizard window and it
FE will install what is required for functionality set X.

I couldn't agree with you more Fred. I thoroughly enjoy Linux, but I
found it hard to get into. I am slightly above an average user having
spent 10 years on mainframes, some assembler, some C++ and the last 5
years supporting Windows installations.

There does seem to be a tendency within the Unix community that if it
isn't a bit difficult to do or use then we must have done something
wrong g

I would support in anyway that I am capable in providing some sort of
easy front end to Linux to widen it's appeal. I am particularly
interested in seeing something available for charities to use as a
stable, cheap and therefore cost-effective way of providing file and
printer services, mail and Internet access to support their work.
However at the present, with it's rather dense interface I cannot see
that being viable. I realise the value of the infinite configurability
that the infinite number of configuration files gives you, but it is
almost impossible (as well as daunting) for an inexperienced user to
work out what to tweak and how.

I would also consider that the help system needs to be looked at quite
seriously. I believe that there are packages out there that make them
more user friendly, but there must be a better way to provide help than
man pages and the less command?

I think that Linux has a great deal to offer to those who want a good
solid OS with a wide range of applications. AFAIK it doesn't have
anything like Exchange or Notes supported on it, but I suspect that the
number of organisations needing that sort of application within my area
of interest are rather limited.

Clean hamm installat

1998-01-18 Thread Ian Watkins
HM Did you ever use --force-blah with dpkg? Was it ever possible to hos
HM your system without using --force-blah?

What is --force-blah?

HM I upgraded my system before Scott's HOWTO was written; at that stage
HM it was fairly simple and all the dependencies seemed to prevent
HM me from doing anything wrong. IIRC, it was basically a case of
HM installing new ld.so, removing the libc5 -dev libraries, installing
HM libc6, installing the hamm non-g libraries, then installing the hamm
HM libraries, then anything else, like bash. For a while I only upgrade
HM the libraries (just to support running new libc6 stuff from hamm),
HM not bothering with existing packages. Never any sign of trouble.

I've done the upgrade (with the help of the mini-howto). What do you
mean by hamm non-g and hamm libraries?

BN success, but will persevere (I've read all the debmake documentation
BN still have a few problems). The other would be to compile and instal
BN software in a relatively safe directory such as /usr/local.

The source is enormous (for a slow FTP link anyway g) and I just
haven't the time to fight my way through that. I had enough fun

I have had one or two scares moving from libc5 - libc6, but it seems
