Intel Pro/100 S Dual Port NIC and Linux

2002-11-18 Thread J. Bobby Lopez
Hi,

Is there anyone out there who is currently and successfully using the
Intel Pro/100 S Dual Port Server Adapter (NIC) with Linux. I've been
trying to get it working first under Kernel 2.4.19, then Kernel 2.4.18
(thinking that 2.4.19 was too new and therefore not supported by the
driver on Intel's website). I haven't been able to get the whole card
working successfully.

Sometimes I get eth0 working and pinging out to the outside world, but
then it crashes - so bad that it halts the system and I have to do a
cold boot.

If anyone has had any luck with this adapter, any help would be appreciated.

Also, anyone has any luck with the 3Com Dual Port Adapters? Never used
them myself, but if they work any better under Linux than the Intel
cards, I would be inclined to consider.

Many thanks,

Bobby

Well, basically it just halts. I can do nothing but cold boot the
computer. No error messages, nothing.

What driver did you use exactly? I am actually trying to get this card
working on an IBM XServer 300 Series (1 U Rack mount) machine, running
Debian.

But as a testing machine here at my office, I'm using a simple Athlon K6
450 mhz machine, and a cheapy motherboard from Pine or something (VIA
Chipset), that supports other cards (including Intel cards) under debian.

The driver that I am using is the one off of Intel's website, the e100
driver.

When I tried to get this driver running under Kernel 2.4.19, I would get
kernel panics, but with 2.4.18, it just halts.

tried with both haven't had any problems. exactly what kind of server
are you putting it on? also, what kind of problem are you having when
you say crashes... I'm currently running it on RH8.0 with 2.4.18
something, forgot, just did the kernel upgrade today... i love those
 rpm's : )... ** gene

Here is my current system configuration.

BTW, I was able to $ modprobe e100 and $ ifconfig eth0 to get this
machine online just now, but if I do the same with eth1, the system will
most likely halt.
