GNOME Volume Manager / HAL issues
Hi, Since a recent update of hal and or GNOME Volume manager two of my disk partitions get mounted automatically and show up on the desktop. Both these partitions I added to fstab with a noauto option so that they normally didn't get mounted. I'd prefer gnome volume manager not to mount these two drives automatically. Anybody knows how I can get that done. Question number 2. HAL can automatically update /etc/fstab but I can't find out how I can this to work. So I thought maybe not everybody sends reports. So maybe there are 10,000 users. That seems to me like a very low number. There are around 500M people on the Internet. How popular is Debian (popularity contest)
I came across this website http://popcon.debian.org/ It shows statistics how many people have installed a certain package on what kind of system etc. etc. If you want to anonymously report what packages you are using you have to have the popularity-contest package installed. I guess many people using Debian have it installed. That's why I was amazed that the number of submissions is only around 6000. Are there only around 1000 debian users on the world (assumption 60% of them sends reports) Also 9 architectures have 20 or less submissions. 3 architectures have only 1 submission. Seems to me supporting all these architectures for all the developers is quite some burden just to help out a few users. Is there something wrong with my reasoning??? However, before then I was running the system on 2.6 without this problem so it may not be related to the kernel. Like I say, it looks fine to me. What are you seeing that makes you think it isn't alright? I'm not a graphic designer, nor am I much into the esthetics/esoterics of graphical display. I can read it, and it looks better than how Mozilla displays Slashdot text. So what do you want? I want it to look really nice. Until last week I was a fedora user and always loved the way it renders fonts, but the facts that it's not completely community driven and the availability of far less packages then Debian started and to bother me. Now I'm a very happy Debian user except for the font rendering. To demonstrate the problem better I attached three files: 1. debian-lt.png shows a webpage in debian 2. fedora-lt.png shows the same webpage in fedora (way better font rendering) 3. fedora-slashdot.png shows slashdot on fedora. As you can see the font rendering even on that site really rocks. Do you see the difference now?? It should be possible to get it like this in Debian as well. My only problem is how? Changing the font rendering in gnome-font-properties does not help. Jaap BTW I added the luxi ttfs to my debian box to get the same fonts as fedora. <><><>

You're right. Any key combo involving Fn isn't going to get picked up by software I'm 100% sure it's a setting. It works fine in Gnoppix, which is based on Knoppix/Debian If I run showkey -s on a console in Gnoppix I see the keycodes of the Fn combos involving the Fn key. How to get multimedia keys (volume up /down) working
Hi, I'd like to to use the volume up and volume down keys of my dell laptop in Gnome. However if I go to Desktop Preferences / Multimedia Keys I cannot attach Fn-VolumeUp(PageUp) or Fn-VolumeDown(PageDown) to the appropriate events. It simply doesn't notice that I pushed those keys. With other normal keys it just works fine. It also doesn't recognize the other multimedia keys. Like changing the contrast. These keys do their job (i.e. change the contrast or what ever they should do), but it seems that they are directly tied to the hardware. GNOME never sees those keys. Does somebody know how to get the volume up and down keys working? Thanks Jaap -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My /etc/esound/esd.conf says: [esd] auto_spawn=1 spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2 spawn_wait_ms=100 and with that, esd-aware and esd-unaware applications are able to coexist just fine. Re: Sound not working
Remaining problem that I have is that if I enable the Gnome Sound Server to get sound working under gnome that Rhythmbox is refusing to play because /dev/dsp is busy. If I disable the Gnome Sound server, Rhythmbox plays fine. However if I start up xmms and also play a file there it doesn't work.(I also see this in Fedora) It seems that I can only play sound from one source. In windooz the card plays fine with multiple sources. Your applications need to be esd-aware. I don't know anything about Rhythmbox, but xmms either is or can be made esd-aware; Right-click within xmms, choose Options, then Preferences, then Output plugin. Thanks for your help it pointed me in the right direction :) Rhythmbox uses the gstreamer framework which can use all the popular sound servers. Out of the box (or apt-get) it gets configured to use oss and that conflicts with esd. I now set it to use esd by specifying it in gconf ( system/gstreamer/default ). gst-player the official gstreamer player now works correctly. Rhythmbox comes up with an error message that it currently cannot use esd when sound events in gnome are enabled.
