gnome-session problems

2001-11-17 Thread Jacob I. Stowell
Hi All,

I am having trouble with gnome-session and was hoping someone might be
able to help me out. The problem is that I cannot get gnome-session to
start. When I have gnome-session in my .xinitrc, X crashes. X will run
when gnome-session is removed from .xinitrc, but when I try to start
gnome-session from a console, I receive the following error:

shaq-fu[~]% gnome-session
_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root

** WARNING **: Unable to lock ICE authority file:
/home/jake/.ICEauthority

I attached a file containing the output of an strace I ran on
gnome-session. I appreciate any help in correcting this problem.

Thanks in advance,

still no X

2000-11-08 Thread Jacob I. Stowell
Hi again,

Today I moved /etc/X11 and /usr/X11R6 and I apt-get --reinstall all of
the packages associated with X 4.0.1. However, I still received the
error cannot open fonts (the one I posted yesterday). I was so hopeful
when I updated this afternoon and all of the packages had been updated.
even after installing the NEW X packages, i still get the same error. I
am really confused. I saw another post that talked about corrupted
fonts, but I did not see a response to that either.

I wish I was proficient enough not to need a windowed environment, but
the reality is that I am not. If anyone has any ideas about this I
would be very grateful. Actually, I would be more than grateful, I just
cannot think of an appropriate adjective.

Thank you in advance.

mouse problems

2000-07-08 Thread Jacob I. Stowell
hello group,

i was wondering if someone could help me get a scrolling mouse to
function properly. i read some various suggestions on how to get such a
device to work in x which suggest that it is important to make changes
in the XF86Config file, so I did the following:

in the Pointer Section i have
Protocol IMPS/2
Device /deb/psaux
ZAxisMapping 4 5

Once i changed this section, it looks like x recognizes when i try to
use the wheel, but every time i use it, a menu pops up and it does not
scrool as it is supposed to. if anyone has any ideas on what i might
try next, i would appreciate any advice.

thank you

rm -R /usr/

2000-06-10 Thread Jacob I. Stowell
hello

i am a new debian user and i just learned a hard lesson. I guess it is
a bad idea to issue the following command:

rm -R /usr/

i try to look at the bright side, you know make lemonade and all that,
so at least i get a new system as a result of my bonehead mistake.
Hopefully i will make different, and yet equally idiotic mistakes in the
future.

thanks for listening, i just needed to vent.

loading sound modules

2000-05-31 Thread Jacob I. Stowell
Hello,

I am trying to get the sound modules to load during the login, but I am
having problems. I added a sound file to my /etc/init.d directory and
updated the modules using the command update-rc.d sound defaults.
However, during login I get the following command:

/etc/init.d/rc: /etc/rc2.d/s20sound: no such file or directory

Below is a copy of the sound file. I was wondering if anyone might have
any ideas as to how I might be able to get the sound modules to load
during login.
Thank you,
-jake

#! /bin/sh
#
# This file will load sound modules for a CS423X sound card.
# Place it in /etc/init.d (as root) and from that directory,
# execute the following command:
#update-rc.d sound defaults
# This will cause the modules to be automatically loaded and
# unloaded when you login and logout.
#
# You can also manually load, unload, and reload the modules using
# the following commands:
#/etc/init.d/sound start
#/etc/init.d/sound stop
#/etc/init.d/sound reload

permssions

2000-05-20 Thread Jacob I. Stowell
Hello,

I am new at this, so this may be a simple question. I recently
installed potato on my home computer, and have sound working. However I
am only able to listen to cds when I am logged in as root. When I try
to listen as user, I get a message that says I cannot access the cdrom
because permission is denied. I am not sure how to set the permissions
so that I have access to the cdrom as user. I was hoping that someone
could help me out with this.
Thank you,

sound-problems

2000-05-19 Thread Jacob I. Stowell
Hello,
I am a brand new to the world of linux. I have potato installed on my
system at home, and I am now trying to set up sound modules. I am stuck
and was wondering if anyone could help me. I will be as detailed as
possible, so please forgive any redundant information:

1. using xconfig, I went through and selected the appropriate sound card
and OSS support, exited and made a bzImage.
2. After I make and make install the modules, I copied /vmlinuz to
/vmlinuz.old
3. cp /usr/src/linux/modules/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /vmlinuz
4. lilo -C /etc/lilo.floppy

I looked at the documentation for the sound card I have (CS4232) and it
says that I need to load the modules using the commands
1. modprobe sound
2. insmod ad1848
3. insmod uart401
4. insmod cs4232 io=* irq=* dma=* dma2=*

However, I am not entirely sure how this is done. In the directory
/usr/src/linux/modules/ there are ad1848.o, uart401.o, and cs4232.o
files. However, when I type insmod ad1848.o some information scrolls by,
but for each device it says ad1848.o: unresolved symbol:XX. I do not
know what to do to get the sound to function. The information specific
to my card are as follows:
irq= 5
io=0534-0537
dma=01
dma2=00

Sorry for the long message. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for
me, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
