I'm hoping you have solved this perplexing problem since you posted, but just in case you haven't, I just wanted to know a couple of things, like: Do you use the: Option "DPMS" in XF86Config-4? I've never got this to work, so I've always used: xset dpms 0 0 2400 in my ~/.xsession file. This has worked until the recent upgrade. No 's' key after logon
Well, I finally hit a WALL with woody: Briefly, my problem: Once I try to login after booting, my 's' key just beeps at me! So 'startx' won't work because I have no 's'... just a beep. And, in mc, I get a 'warning, cant cd into archives'. probably because it has an 's' in it. Thinking, it may be the latest bash upgrade, I wanted to downgrade to the earlier bash that was there. But, n, dpkg couldn't find 'bah.deb'. Even though I got the above warning, mc did show the archives directory. In mc, I was able to use the 's' key. So I reboot to 'Linux single', but again, no 's'. bummer. So I try 'mutt' (thank the gods... No 's' in 'mutt'). Now, I'm typing this in 'vim' and the 's' (obviously) is working. apache & latest woody libc6 upgrade
A lingering problem of mine since things were fixed: /etc/init.d/apache start * syntax error on line 133 of /etc/apache/srm.conf: Invalid command 'AddDefaultCharsetName', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration This prevented the restart of apache. 2) When I try to edit my hosts.allow file with ae, it will not allow me to make any changes. Im logged in as root I make the changes then use ctrl x, ctrl s to save but it doesnt take the command. All I get it a x and s on the screen. Any thoughts??? Control key not working? I haven't used ae for a while; install ee for console mode editing. cron & exim message in logs

I just went through this a couple of days ago. The commandline is: cdrecord -v speed=8 dev=0,0 Speed & dev probably will be different on your box. I found this was much easier than doing it with xcdroast. Someone had mentioned that by just changing the extension from .iso to .raw, then xcdroast would be able to write it ok. I had success with the linux version of RealPlayer. Still, I had to setup netscape to use it for streaming. There was a url that I bumped into on my searches through deja.com that had step by step instructions to setup the netscape plugin. Maybe someone here has the url? I did what David & Chris hinted at. I added "ifdown eth0" to the beginning of the pon script & added "ifup eth0" to the beginning of the poff script which works, but only as root. As user I get: sh: ifconfig: command not found when running pon/poff. This is ok with me since losing eth0 connection to the internet is a rare (knock on woody) occurance. I've been experimenting getting ppp running as a backup when my cable modem connection goes belly up for whatever reason. I disable eth0 with: ifdown eth0. Then I pon & later I poff I then do a: ifup eth0 Now I cannot access the internet through my cable modem (connected to eth0). My original routing table before ifdown is: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface 192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth1 localnet* 255.255.252.0 U 0 00 eth0 default bb1-fe0-0-0.pot 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0 After the ifup my table is: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface 192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth1 localnet* 255.255.252.0 U 0 00 eth0 default 24.7.136.1 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0 Now, if I run pon/poff again, my default gateway for eth0 reverts back to: default bb1-fe0-0-0.pot 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0 Now that I've invented the hard way to fix this, what's the easy way? The current potato wine package worked flawlessly for me, so I didn't save the previous version. I got the latest one in woody, but still wine breaks. If you could, polly, upgrade to the latest libc6 (2.1.3-5). If wine starts up for you, then I'll go to the wine news group to see if they can sort it out. but when I degraded back to libc6_2.1.3-4, wine works. My wine package is: wine_0.0.2109-2_i386.deb This is on a fresh install of potato I've been running the last month or so. I never had the "pre-depends" problem. Any one else having troubles with wine? John

I've noticed this the last few days with both slink to potato upgrade and a fresh potato install on another drive. The problem looks like the latest findutils package. It's a link to nothing. The file libwine.so was pointing to must have been deleted in an upgrade of wine, but the link was left. Just remove the link, and the message will go away. If I remember right, what I did was find the XF86_3DLabs binary on the net (suse, I think), download it to /usr/bin/X11/ and edit your /etc/X11/Xserver to point to it. login failed --> critical error - immediate abort
Hello I'm running the latest potato. I rebooted my box this morning and I got the error after logging in (as root & as user): critical error - immediate abort I noticed a bug report filed about this, and so I downgraded login from stable, and now I'm able to login. Before I run another apt-get upgrade, I wanted to see if anyone else had this problem and what the solution is besides using login from stable. 2 lingering probs
Prob #1 I'm running slink, upgraded libc6.2.1.1 because wine needed it: ran into too many problems, so went back to libc6.2.0.7. Now, when I boot up, /etc/X/Xresourses/xterm is not read. So, I have to: xrdb -merge xterm to get the file read. What do I need to do to remedy this? Prob #2 Printing: After bootup, I cannot do a print job until I: rmmod lp then insmod lp Then my print job is sent to the printer. I only have to do this the first time after bootup, then I have no problem with any other print jobs I send. My current /etc/modules contain: auto serial isofs lp Although, I've tried without auto, and omitted lp from the file. lsmod is constant with: lp 20 Although, with many early attempts at reconfigurations, ls mod showed an "autoclean" when it wouldn't print and then dissapear when a print job was sent. So, at one point I thought this might have been causing my non-printing problem, but autoclean hasn't been showing up lately. (what is autoclean?) Also, an lpq shows "no entries" when a print job is lost. I'm running KDE. Oh, that reminds me. About the same time I tried the libc6 upgrade, I upgraed the KDE, and had to install xdm, but disabled it with a "update-rc.d xdm remove" Any more info you need to help me solve this, I'll happily supply. I just got and installed the latest (3/28/99) wine.deb from potato and now my little windows program dies a horrible death. George Well, I told you it was probably something stupid I was or was not doing. I made a bootable floppy just now, from the new kernel image, and it booted my new kernel, and no more plip! Hi, I've been trying to compile plip out of the 2.0.36 kerenel(slink, hda5), so I can use lp, without success. Here's some data: In .config # CONFIG_PLIP is not set CONFIG_PRINTER=m In bootup message: NET3 PLIP version 2.2 [EMAIL PROTECTED] plip1: Parallel port at 0x378, using assigned IRQ 7. And with cat /proc/ioports: 0378-037f : plip1 I've been using Debian's make-kpkg system to compile and I'm using lilo through my hamm installation on hdb1. I know I'm changing the kernel, because once I lost my ppp and vfat support. I have only the 1 parallel port and it's set at 0x378 & irq 7 My Hamm install prints without fuss and I don't have this plip problem. I know it's something really stupid I'm doing (or not doing), but I cant figure it out. If you need more info, please let me know. Any help is very welcomed. John B

The future has arrived. I didn't wait long enough. I turned my back, and sure enough the serial ports were back on auto and I couldn't connect. It wasn't different versions of setserial as I had thought. Anyway, Brandon, your solution of adding "serial" to /etc/modules appears to have worked.
