Firefox, Gmail, FindAsYouType query
Hello, I wasn't sure if this is a bug so I'm posting here first. I'm using Firefox 0.99+1.0RC1-3 right now on my Debian Sid box. When I go to gmail.google.com, Firefox automatically puts in my username. And because the username is there, the focus is moved to the password field (gmail's javascript) automatically. (With the preference Begin Finding when you being typing set) when I start typing my password, the Find as you Type(FAYT) extension kicks in and opens at the bottom of the window and shows me the password I'm typing as if it was the string for which I'm searching. And if I press backspace key, it erases the letters first from the text area of the FAYT extension, and then it erases letters from the password field, one-by-one. This only happens when the preference Begin Finding when you being typing is set. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks, /KS -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. When the cursor is in the location bar and I press Ctrl+U to delete the text, Firefox opens the View Source window. This is annoying as it changes a basic linux shortcut's functionality. Can't say I've ever understood this particular problem since Ctrl+L does essentially the same thing, and without having to select the address bar first as well. Or install the Diggler extension. I also dispute that this is a basic linux shortcut since it is in fact a vi shortcut. Mozilla uses a hodgepodge of both vi and emacs shortcuts in text areas in Linux. I thought it was a basic linux shortcut as I could use it on a terminal on various Linux flavours I have tired. Didn't know that it actually came from Emacs. It was working fine till 0.9.3 and the change has only happened in 0.10+ versions. Mozilla suite still kills the text in location bar with Ctrl+U but Firefox has changed. Is it possible to revert back the behaviour? And now with this new version there is another package that I had to install, mozilla-firefox-gnome-support. I think why everyone suggested changing GNOME preferences. See Mozilla bugs 189615 and 260188. This was changed because too many bugs were being filed on the old behaviour. I agree they're useful in text areas in the page itself, I'm far less convinced they're useful in the url and search bars since selecting the bar itself via keyboard shortcut selects the contents for overwriting. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189615 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=260188 From comment #18 of the latter: ...add the following two lines to your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file: include /usr/share/themes/Emacs/gtk-2.0-key/gtkrc gtk-key-theme-name = Emacs Tried that. Didn't work! You should also be able to change it from the GNOME control centre somewhere (beats me where - I can't stand GNOME). What this means is that Firefox now respects whatever behaviour you have set GNOME and all GNOME apps to use, which in the end makes more sense. HTH, I got another way to deal with the Ctrl+U thing. from b.m.o #189615 I learnt that intead of selecting url, focusing in location bar, Ctrl+U, mouse middle click to paste url, I could just middle click in the body of a tab and it will open that url. Neat. Thanks for all the suggestions, /KS -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks. /KS Hi Ks, here is some info(not sure this answers your question): 1)gnome and kde have control panel settings for 'default browsers' 2)debian has the 'alternatives' system that determines what to choose for certain default applications like www-browser and x-www-browser -Kev Hi Kev, Thanks for the pointers. Here is what I think/did: 1) - I tried KDE control panel KDE Components Component Chooser Web Browser. It does configure the default web browser, but it also says all _KDE_ applications in which you select hyperlinks should honor this setting. Thus, this doesn't look like a desktop-type solution. I didn't check with Gnome but its possible it would have similar functionality. 2) - my /etc/alternatives has mozilla, www-browser and x-www-browser links which seem to be candidates for attack. mozilla links to latest mozilla version I have, so its just a version alternative. www-browser links to /usr/bin/w3m -- which is a text based web browser so didn't touch it, and x-www-browser gives possibilites of using mozilla, knoqueror, epiphany, or mozilla-firefox. I configured x-www-browser to use mozilla, but Thunderbird still starts Epiphany for http:// links. And Nvu fires up Mozilla (or uses Firefox if running). So from this I gather that having the alternatives set to a program is not the only variable. The originating applications also play some kind of role in this. /KS -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re:%20Re: Firefox(0.10.1+1.0PR-4) window doesn't open.
Hello John, The .mozilla directory should not matter. Its the firefox directory in the .mozilla directory which carries the mozilla-firefox profile. Removing .mozilla directory would have meant moving my Seamonkey profile in the process, which didn't seem to be the root of the problem. Firefox is running for me now. I did apt-get --purge remove mozilla-firefox. And it told me that purging was not complete as some directories were not empty. I was confused because the plugins directory wasn't empty as I had removed the livehttpheaders and diggler extensions I used with Firefox. But on further investigation I saw that Mozilla Seamonkey and Mozilla Firefox packages both use the same extensions packages. There were indications of a couple of extensions still listed(under extensions dir) which were working in Mozilla Seamonkey, but which were not listed in Mozilla Firefox (old version, 0.9.3). These extensions although not visible were still listed in the plugins directory. Its quite possible that they may have been diabled in one of the earlier upgrade of Firefox. So, I had to remove 'all' mozilla/firefox extensions and then reinstall Firefox. Got Firefox running and then again had to reinstall the few extensions to be able to use them!! Simply disabling an extension if it is not compatible with an upgrade is not a good idea. The user should be shown the complete list of extensions which are listed in the extensions folder (e.g. /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/extensions) with an indicator that it is enabled or disabled. Although a better place for this suggestion would be Mozillazine, but I thought of writing here just for the record. Hello, Now that Firefox is running for me, there are a couple of questions that have cropped up with this version. 1. Firefox indicates that there are updates pending. - After checking, it tells updates are pending for Diggler, TrackBack and DOMi. I have the latest version of diggler and DOMi from debain. 2. Why is the update service indicator enabled in Firefox? As updates are to be done via apt, etc with an official deb package, the update service indicator could as well be disabled. Why would someone want to update using unofficial stuff when the package is official deb package? 3. Is it possible to have an update service by debian or on u.m.o just for debain? Should I just use chmod og+w for /mount/part10 (assuming I'm mouting it under /mount in dir part10)? Would it be better to make this partition similar to /tmp with the t bit set? Please suggest. Formatting an unused partition
Bonjour tous, I have two HDDs (40+80G). The smaller one (/dev/hda) has WinXP on it(hardly used), and bigger one (/dev/hdb) has Debian Sid installed. I was checking free space on /dev/hdb and by chance summed up all the partition sizes. I was surprised to see that the sum was considerably less than 80GB(I didn't even remember that it was there). I did a cat /proc/partitions and it showed that there was an ~18GB partition (/dev/hdb10). Then I checked with cfdisk and it showed the partion as FS=Linux but no type. What are the various options that I use to format that partion and use it? I did read about cfdisk but I just want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing as it is being done as root. RE: Formatting an unused partition
I'm top posting(to keep in line with the response), but if that is not recommended do inform me. No, the partition is not alread mounted. And as seen in the copy of cfdisk partition list in my first message, it does not show a partition type. Trying -t auto for mounting gives: mount: you must specify the filesystem type And there are no software raid devices on my system. Regards, /KS --- Steven Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Do a df -h and look for hdb10 to make sure it is not mounted/used. The next stage depends on how paranoid you are, at this point if you are confident its unused you can make a file system on it. If not mount it and go see if amything is in it. regards Steven -Original Message- From: [KS] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, 20 October 2004 10:24 a.m. To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Formatting an unused partition Bonjour tous, I have two HDDs (40+80G). In trying to find out how to do that, here is one way I can think of: mkfs -v -t ext3 /dev/hdb10 Any other suggestions? /KS ___ Do you Yahoo!? K3b setup problem
Hello all, I just installed K3b using apt-get (Debian Unstable). For the first time startup it presented me with my hardware list (2 drives, 1CDRW and 1DVDRW). After setting the speeds for the driver, I clicked OK. Then it opened a widow showing a problem: cdrdao does not run with root privileges It is highly recommended to configure cdrdao to run with root privileges to increase the overall stability of the burning process. Solution: Use K3bSetup to solve this problem. Should I go ahead with K3bSetup and set cdrdao to run with root privileges? I'm a little apprehensive about giving cdrdao to run with root privileges as it works fine from commandline. Any Comments? Thanks, /KS __ Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Re: php in sid
Did you try restarting Apache. I had similar problems after an update(apt-get upgrade). All php files were being asked for download by the browser. However, it was fixed without any editing of config files by me(everything was fine before update). Possibly the server restart was responsible for that. Also, reading /usr/share/doc/php4/README.Debian might help. /KS ___ Do you Yahoo!? Thanks for the advice Adam. Everything was fine after waiting a couple of days. openoffice.org-mimelnk_1.1.2-4_all.deb didn't cause any errors then. Thanks. /KS ___ALL-NEW Yahoo! Firefox and Mozilla memory usage issues
Hello, I mostly use Firefox or Mozilla for my web browsing purposes. Both programs are great and provide the user with a lot of choice for configuration and using features and extensions. However, I have noticed that if I use Firefox for a long time, it tends to eat up a lot of memory. And I mean a lot of memory. Last night, almost all my 256MB of RAM was full. The only programs running (visible windows) were two terminals and Firefox(3 tabs). The desktop I'm using is KDE for Debian Sid (with daily apt-get). On checking with top, I saw firefox was using 126MB of memeory. On closing Firefox, it took approximately 3 minutes for the HDD to stop working hard(light kept on). The with only two terminals open the total memory usage was 100MB. After restarting Firefox and using it for about 5minutes(3 tabs), it was using 32MB of memory. And it has been running since then(about 14hrs). Now its again using 92MB. Similar behaviour has been seen with Mozilla, especially when viewing a page with several images. Is this is know issue with Mozilla and Firefox? Is this called memory leak? Is is solely related to Mozilla or does Debian has to do something with it? Thanks. ___ALL-NEW Yahoo! Debian Sid: Lost audio/sound
Hi, The audio/sound was working fine on my Debian Unstable box till recently. But I can't hear any sound/audio for the last 4 days. No audio for movies, mp3s, CDs, etc which used to play normally. XMMS shows that it is playing the audio files (no warnings/errors in xterm) but there is no audio. BTW, I'm using the OSS output module with XMMS which was being used earlier too. Problem running PHP4 with Apache
Hi, I just did an upgrade with apt-get which included upgrades to php4 in addition to others. After the upgrade, php is not running with apache. I checked and the lines for application/x-httpd-php and they are uncommented. AddType application/x-httpd-php .php AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps The modules.conf includes the php module (position: just before the last module). LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so The DirectoryIndex section also contains the index.php entry (although I don't use it) IfModule mod_dir.c ~DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.php index.shtml index.cgi /IfModule Is there something else I need to do? Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks /KS PS: uname -a Linux localhost 2.4.26-1-686 #1 Thu Jul 22 13:00:49 JST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux ___ALL-NEW Yahoo!
