I looked at the message with the help of google translate and it didnt look
that bad to me. It also looks like you sent this message to more people than
was needed. I'm not a Debian project member but from reading past messages
about similar requires, they usually dont delete posts as that is not the
nature of Debian, it defaults to 'open', and also the fact that your post would
be mirrored to more places, so you'd still have to ask every other website to
do it to be truly effective. Another good point to learn is about anonymity,
pseudonymity and the need to create less traceable aliases on the internet.
Because when we are only allowed to use 'real names' on web site, your problem
is made worse, and its even worse for people who are part of minority groups or
under military regimes.

This is one of the reasons why people who seek to use DRM will not allow their
software to be made for Free Software Platforms. DRM is not in the best
interest of the users/re-users of content. And by adding DRM, you tell the user
that he/she did not buy the content but is renting it until you decide
otherwise. People have proven, again and again, that they are capable of
circumventing DRM, so it is not an issue of 'if' they will break DRM but when.
And it only hinders legitimate user of your content, those who wish to follow
these restrictions. From my recollection, KPDF has an option to 'enable' the
compliance with the 'do not print' feature. But it is not enabled by default.

I am partial to computer-generated speech. I use espeak/festival
to announce things(time, battery %). Dont know about non-english speech
support. I also stated to use teamspeak(client & server voice chat) for
long-distance communication. Have it 'on' on both systems like a
walkie-talkie/intercom/etc.. (not free software but free as in beer for
most basic use)

I was thinking a cron script that does 'ls $FILENAME' every 15 minutes
and appends the result in a log file. then maybe add a log of 'ps -A f'

I guess you can look for tutorials with gcc and gdb and then look for a

If you just need the data, you can remove the HD and find some thing
like a HD enclosure to put it in. They you can attach the HD to some
other machine and get the data.
Just an more unusual option to consider.

Would this help:
server A: 192.168.10.1
server B: 192.168.10.10
if you open an xterm on server B and run:

server_b% ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]
server_a% mygraphicsprogram

the output would display on server B.
you would need to have an ssh server on server A
and an ssh client on server B.

Would a Wiki fill this need. Once it is setup, the basic syntax is not
hard (eg. wikipedia) and would allow folks to get up some basic home
page and links to publication in an hour. And you could later add a more
professional apperance with a offical uni header with a logo etc. All
you need is a basic http server and a wiki engine which should be
relatively painless on any Linux server like Debian. You would
presumedly just ask them to install the wiki software assuming they
already had it setup with apache.

Description: hides the cursor in X after a period of inactivity
unclutter hides your X mouse cursor when you don't need it, to prevent it
from getting in the way. You have only to move the mouse to restore the
 mouse cursor.

One of the mainstays of the FLOSS world is the installfest. These are
used to help new users install a free operating system. But it has also
included other things:
- help a user solve an existing problem
- mull over the latest in FLOSS developments over a (root)beer.
- ask for advice about hardware
- expand and reinforce the community aspect of FLOSS
- etc.

Since supposedly every family uses Vista and has some relative to
'support' the family PC, it has always been part of the mission to have
some local community to support those folks who use FLOSS. Sometimes its
an installfest, a LUG, or SIG.

Debian has meta-packages like 'gnome' that make it easier to install
the gnome desktop. But these only allow you to keep all the listed
packages or none of them. So if you want more control, you can remove
the meta-package and install the indivisual packages and manage them
yourself. There are also 'smaller' versions like gnome-core and
gnome-desktop-environment that install a smaller group of packages.
use 'apt-cache show gnome' to see more info.

It could be because of the actions of the DSA, security folks, who are
scrambling to address the need to make new keys for all Debian servers
after a issue was found with random-number generation.
I read about it on debian-infrastructure-announce and debian-devel.

here are things to help us:
do:
plug in the usb tv card
% lsusb
give us the output
% tail -15 /var/log/messages
give us this output (as root)

these who should give messages if the kernel found the card, loaded a

Mozilla made the use of the Firefox brand contingent upon certain
conditions like using the lastest versions of Firefox to address
security issues instead of allowing Debian to address them for the
stable versions. Debian did not agree to all the conditions and thus
Iceweasel was born.

There are 2 approaches to affect problems: passive and active. The
passive approach involves leaving and never telling why. The active
approach involves making your reason known and optionally asking for an
accommodation and then finally leaving. I used to try to 'fool' tech
support into thinking that I used windows, but now I say I use linux and
when they say 'we only support windows', I say my problem is not related
to windows.

It was certainly not Debian's intention to make Iceweasel and it worked
to alter just those few elements that it was forced to, namely the icon,
name and branding. So Iceweasel is 99.9% Firefox. Ubuntu made different
negotiations around the time of Iceweasel fiasco and avoided the name
change.

An error for LyX can be in the Debian version or the upstream. Since I
usually dont know which is the cause, I send it to the debian package
and see if they can suggest anything to help tell the difference.

Historically Ubuntu is sync'd with Debian unstable every six month and
then they apply various and suntry pathes to create their release. This
is the plan for the (current 2000) core packages. Then they try to
integrate non-core packages from Debian by recompiling them using the
Ubuntu toolchain to produce their 'universe' repositories. So you should
be able to get those 'debian' packages from their universe repos.

In the beginning, the difference between Debian and Ubuntu was minimal,
but as they progressed, they have diverged in many way. One current
outstanding issue is the init script: they use 'upstart' and we use
sysv. These are not compaible. And we use different toolchains, so their
can be big differences there. Most Debian deriviates are divergent
enough, they it is not worth it. If you can deal with the problems and
don't mind the possible breakage, for a personal system, its your choice,
but if you want stability, its a very bad move that neither group would
recommend.

In the same vein, you can also utilize wifi and powerline ethernet.
I use wifi and it can go through some material(wood, plasterboard) and
covers open spaces. You can also set up various parabolic antennas to
connect distant points. Powerline ethernet works by sending ethernet
over the mains in your structure. Not sure of how relaible it is, as
I've never used it.

One of the additional benefits of screen:
if you close/kill an xterm, the application is terminated
if you close/kill an xterm with screen running, nothing is lost

When you apt-get or aptitude something, it does this:
-download DEB file to /var/cache/apt/archive
-runs dpkg on the DEB file in /var/cache/apt/archive

if you need to reinstall a package, /var/cache/apt/archive is searched
first, to avoid re-downloading the file.

All the files needed for removing/purging/etc. the package are placed in
/var/lib/dpkg/info. So the DEB is not used.
hope that explains,

Not that this solves your problem but are you aware that there are

Debian from time to time needs to drop things like libraries to keep it
maintainable. Having 7 different versions of a particular
language|library is untenable (python 1.0, 2.0, ...). So in this case
XMMS used gtk 1 which is being phased-out and gtk 2 will be used thus
forward. IIRC some folks where considering upgrading XMMS to use gtk 2.
This would be a way to get XMMS back into Debian.

In general, bug-fixes are sent to unstable. After some testing they are
sent to testing. If a problem occurs, the testing package is removed and
at some point another unstable package will replace it. When all the
pacakges in testing are capable of working together and have no release
critical bugs, the whole becomes stable. The point is that package need
lots of testing which takes a lot of time (18 months). This means that
stable (and testing which will become stable) are at least 18 months
old. And unstable which gets the updates will be very new all the time.

I would imagine the unversioned binary would be linked to a versioned
one.
ln -s postgresl7.3 postgres
and/or may be setup using the Debian alternatives system upon
installation.
hope that explains.

Hmm. It seems many languages' have been adding a private package
installation. Debian (and I expect others) package their own language
modules (for perl, ruby, php, etc.) and there may be a way to install
lightttpd without using this alternate method. These methods do not
register their packages with Debian so are unknown to dpkg. Debian
packages do not use these alternate methods to satisfy their
dependencies. I would expect the Debian developer to have packaged all
the required reverse dependencies, so if you have a problem installing
it, I'd suggest a bug report in the BTS. If its a popular add-on, then
the maintainer may want to package it. But the alternate methods make it
harder to Debian to keep things easy.

Are you suggesting that you had the apostrophes in the file? That is not
that case.
this is the contents of mine:

AUTH_CLIENT_ALLOW_NOTLS_PASSWORD=true

But to better diagnose the issue, I guess giving the output
of /var/lib/exim4/paniclog would help.

Hi M,
I think you best bet is to contact the debian-med subproject. I would
expect them to be happy to package (ITP) it. Consult google for their
webpage and mailing list.
Or alternatively there is the debian-perl group, who group maintains
most of the perl packages.

I did:

and the only thing that stuck out was this option:
--no-preserve-ownerDo not change the ownership of the files

so maybe add this and use:
cpio -pdmuv --no-preserve-owner

These are various metapackages that track the lastest version.
linux-images-686 will install the latest i686 kernel
linux-image-2.6-686 will install the latest 2.6-based i686 kernel

This is a regular package:
linux-image-2.6.18-6-686 will install kernel 2.6.18 (the 6th debian
revision).

These are for Etch, the current version of Debian.
Lenny hopefully will be ready for release in Sept or so.

At present, Debian supports PowerPc. Have you check the BTS for possible
issue? What have you had issues with? If everyone who had a PPC did not
participate in its upkeep, there will be none. So if you want it

Hi David,
I think you might want to ask your question on the 'debian-mentors' list
as its a list for beginning people seeking packaging advice. Also, there is the
'debian-devel' list, but its for people asking question about debian
developement which includes packaging.
although someone here may be able to help you as well.

Yes, that would also be good. I know that there are at least 2 similarly
sighted folks on d-u, which is why I thought first of it. The more
'eyes' on bugs, makes them solved quicker, to paraphrase.

Hi Suzy,
I am forwarding your request to the Debian-user mailing list, as that
would be a better place to ask. The Debian-project list is for questions
about the Debian project and not for help with using Debian.

I know there are some pic software in Debian. Never used it. Just an OT

You do know that Mono is not a Microsoft Product and its produced by
FLOSS programmer. So its free software. I like free software. Its
impementing an open standard. I like open standards. At least for now
there is no patent claims, but I expect the SFLC, the PFLC and others to
be on the look-out, So unless Gnome hacker are double-agents, there
should be no issues.

I wouldn't consider that a conspiricy, I like tomboy, myself.
Debian also offers you other choices.

Well, you can certainly suggest it, if its not in Debian.
Consider an ITP (intent to package) request if you can program or an
RFP(request for package) otherwise.

Backports.org is run by Debian developes and I believe that most of the
pacakges are done by Debian developers. (contact them for full details).
I also recall that they MAY get security update.
http://www.backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php

Debian now has testing security update.
http://secure-testing-master.debian.net/
Hope that explains,

Here is an idea:
create a temp. dir: mkdir music_copy

copy the files you want to listen to into the temp. dir:
cp my_music_file1 my_music_file2 ... music_copy

alter the time stamp of these files to suite FAT:
(I think 'touch' would do but not sure what FAT uses)

then copy the file to your music player

The key is to find what value FAT uses: mtime? ctime?
Hope this helps.

Hi Jonathan,
I would suggest that you get many different live-cd distros with
different look and feel:
ubuntu
kubuntu
pclinuxos
etc.
And then tell her to try these differnt ones and see which seems easist
to her. Gnu/Linux does not have somethat that would fool her to think
its XP, so you can´t pull the switch-o-roo without her noticing. Tell
her it will be faster, virus free, something new to try and something
that can you can help her customize to her liking. Think: wall paper,
font size, themes,...
Make it a game to have fun with...
The worst that can happen is that she goes back to her XP and seems how
slow it is ;-)

Hi,
Free software users usually consider themselves are part of a community
(of volunteers). Mailing lists are places for us to interact, ask for
advice, and other things depending upon the list. This list is 'high
volume' which in this case means that it has 300 posts/day with many
thousand subscribers in all parts of the globe in all time zones. So if
you ask something, especially if its interesting or novel, will get SOME
response. If you appreciate our help, please consider a donation to our
favorite cause ;-) via paypal or stopping by a booth at a trade show. Or
just helping someone in return.
Cheers,

Wireless cards depend on the kernel, kernel modules, and firmware. So,
you may just have not had the correct kernel and kernel modules loaded.
To get help, someone would need to know what kernel you used, what
kernel modules were loaded and the output of lspci, I guess.

Your OP did not say that, so I guess my hint won't work as it expects

There are a lot of Debian-based distro. They use the debian packaging
format (deb) and use the debian package manager (dpkg, apt-get,
aptitude). Beyond that, there are lots of differences. Ubuntu tried to
stay somewhat close to Debian by baseing its work upon Debian's unstable
packages every 6 months. Not sure what Xandros does. All have different
versions of KDE, Gnome, LibC, gcc, etc. So it is not ever officially
recommended to install a package from one to the other. If you buy
Xandros, you should get support from them, only. Debian has 16,000+
packages. Most of the derivitaves do not use all them. So, if you need a
package that is not in Xandros, then you can usually get the debian
source package and compile it to create a side-graded xandros deb
(untested). There are private contractors who support Debian, check the
web site for a list of them. There are also companies like HP and Dell
who may have Debian support,

At the last Debconf in the UK(2007), the local network was named after the

Hi,

I googled and found this[0]:

gauge (ga) [3]
a traditional unit measuring the diameter (or the cross-sectional
area) of a wire. Various wire gauge scales have been used in the U.S.
and Britain. In traditional scales, larger gauge numbers represent
thinner wires. (For very thick wires, repeated zeros are used instead of
negative numbers, so gauges 00, 000, and represent -1, -2, and -3,
respectively.) In the American Wire Gauge (AWG) scale, gauge
represents a wire having a diameter of 0.46 inch and 36 gauge represents
a diameter of 0.005 inch (5 mils). Diameters for the other gauges are
obtained by geometric interpolation, meaning that the ratio between
successive diameters is a constant, except for necessary roundoff. Thus
n gauge wire has a diameter of .005·92((36-n)/39) inch. The metric wire
gauge number is equal to 10 times the diameter of the wire, in
millimeters; thus a metric 8 gauge wire has diameter 0.8 millimeters. A
table of wire gauge equivalents is provided.

The above formula did not paste correctly:
 (36-n)

   39
wire gauge(n)=0.005*92^ Inches

And this references this[1]:

Those have been out for many months... I guess you didn't get the memo
;-) Many of the Linux faithful (and other brave souls) are snapping them

as possible and getting all the required bits into Debian proper. Check
wiki.debian.org for details.

Hi,
the DEB format contains a tar ball of the program files, so you can use
dpkg options to extract that tar ball but this will not run the install
script or register the install in the dpkg database,
You can then use the 'equivs' program to add an entry to the dpkg
database. This is extremely hacky at best.
I dont recall such an option, maybe someone has a better suggestion.
so: 'man dpkg'.

Sorry you and your friend are having such an awful time with this. I
just recalled some issue that I had when I first got it. I have more
than one phone outlet. And I tried using my own phone wire as well as
the one provided by verizon. I found the only way to use the DSL was
with my 'main outlet' with their 'special' grey heavy duty round
phone cable. For some reason if I used my flat cheap phone wire and
the seconday outlet, the connection did not work. Not sure if you have
such issue.
Cheers,
Kev

If you having that much problem, I ask a verizon rep to come to your
house to get things working. Its you dime, they should get things
working. This is not 100% perfect, as they may not want to do it. But
asking is fine, as you are the customer. I had a problem and they sent
me a new modem (they thought it was the modem, but I knew it wasn't but
it made them happy). So you can ask for something to be done. Are you
able to read the leds? On my model when ever I had a problem it shows if
the issue is with the dsl line or my machine and all the times its been
a problem its always shown that its the dsl and not my machine.
Good luck and hang in there,

It just occurred to me that you may not have access to all of the
requried information about the westell status lights. I have outages and
the only way I had know, besides the connection not working, was the
lights on the westell. Either one of the lights was red or blinking. Do

The login credentials are your email address and email password. Are
you suggesting that using dhcp to get an ip address from the westell
modem is illegal and cause for verizon to take some punitive action upon
you and 'break your connection'? PPPOE is only needed if the westell is
configured to not login/authenticate to the network. Otherwise, your
linux box just needs dhcp and the westell needs to be setup to
authenticate to the pppoe network by entering you credentials in its web
interface.

Hi Jude,
if what you told me before is true, that you have a westell 6100 with
verizon, then the pppoe is done on the westell (unless you changed its
mode). And all you need to do is setup dhcp for eth0. So no pppoe should
be needed.

How about this:
get any case you want.
get some guy who welds and make an outer box to put your computer it
with a few hole where needed.
This way you dont need 'a certain form-factor' because anything will fit
inside.
create a U shape: left side, bottom, right side
then make the front and back panels with a few holes for cables
and then a top to put on top of the U.

debian-user help idea

2008-01-15 Thread Kevin Mark
Hi,
I usually post some but due to this unresolved debian.org mail
issue(me being blocked from their domain) I have to post from a
secondary account.

I was thinking how d-u folks like to have lots of useful facts to help
in problem solving. Then I thought how that kind of information is
normally sent to the BTS when a user uses 'reportbug'. So I was
thinking if someone could redo 'reportbug' to send initial d-u help
requests sending useful info so that us helpers dont have to ask 10
times for basic stuff .
Does this sound vaguely like a useful idea.

how to get debian.org to accept my yahoo.com email

2007-12-08 Thread Kevin Mark
Hi debian-users,
my ISP is verizon which uses yahoo.com for sending email. Recently my
email from my .verizon.net account is not being shown on any
.debian.org list. From what I understand debian.org does not want to
receive any of my email because my mail is sent through yahoo.com
which rfc-ignorant.org has listed as a spammer. I don't think there is
anything I can do to stop yahoo from being a spammer. So can I get
Debian to stop using the service of rfc-ignorant.org (I assume not)?
Would the debian-whitelist fix this? Any suggestions?
Kev

Maybe consider buying the EeePc laptop and make a donation to the XO
fund? This way you get a more standard laptop that supports linux and
help the XO fund?
But I'm sure someone will work on XO/Linux, so maybe ask on an XO list?
