Re: Why compiling.

2012-07-10 Thread Kousik Maiti
People do compilation for many reason.

They want to learn more. They want to run packages from source code.
If you are going to compile kernel from source you can learn more details
about kernel.

why people do compiling. i have heard many time that people are
 compiling kernel on debian.
what is the reason for this? i am using debian for almost 1.5 year and
have been using it on different platform in CLI mode. but no need of
 compiling in this time window.

secondly i have read that people are compiling Squid SAMBA and all
the other packages but why. i am using KVM, squid samba etc for
almost more then 1 year and all the servers are providing me what ever
i asled all the services are very comprehensive and could be fit in
 any environment then why compiling?

 Thanks,

Packages means programs. From the manual of the linuxusblive I got the info

Can the created persistence usb portable through different hardware? If
no then what modifications required to make it portable through

I think you can have some problems with drivers to get all detected
devices working properly (mostly peripherals) in the LiveUSB (not in
virtual machine mode), but as long as you can get into Internet and
downlowad the required drivers (or installing them locally), you're done.

My problem is in some system its working properly. but in other system it
unable to show gdm. I can access virtual terminals(means ALT+CTL+Fn keys)
only.

Re: Why is troubleshooting Linux so hard?

2010-08-15 Thread Kousik Maiti
information usually is in them - whilst having other entries
amid the list with what other things were doing at the time. I find Linux
 logs
very frustrating to read for that reason since I don't know when an event
 is
finished reporting or which items are relevant.

 4) Logs need to focus on reporting on one thing and making sure it reports
that one thing well. Other than formatting, I can't see many differences
between syslog, dmesg and messages. Xorg.log is some help for
 troubleshooting
misconfigured xorg.conf files (which are depreciated anyway) but not very
 useful
if your X session burns down. kdm.log seems identical to Xorg.log except
 for
a few KDE-specific entries. I had to uninstall my firewall because it kept
writing firewall entries to messages (and stdout) and I couldn't figure out
 how
to get it to stop. Why isn't there one log that only deals with hardware
status and changes, another one that only deals with network status and
firewall logging, another one which only deals with dumps and crashes and
 so
 on?

Maybe I just haven't found the right manual yet that has all of these
 answers
 so I'd appreciate any direction.

 With regards,

 Borden Rhodes

Then /var/log/dmesg contains some messages like HAL timed out waiting

Yes, I did aptitude safe-upgrade after aptitude update and then
 aptitude full-upgrade.

I selected n and it prompted me to downgrade the packages to testing.
This means that the versions it had were newer than testing, i.e., from sid.
How could this be if I followed 2.7.3 of DR? According to that, my candidate
 version is appropriately set:

 stuc...@debian:~$ cat /etc/apt/apt.conf

Not /etc/mtab you should edit /etc/fstab and it should be like this :-

In /etc/mtab I find the partition was mounted using ntfs, not ntfs-3g:
 /dev/sdb1 /media/disk ntfs rw 0 0

If I manually mount it with the type ntfs:
 mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /media/disk
 I also can find the line /dev/sdb1 /media/disk ntfs rw 0 0.

If I manually mount it with ntfs-3g, everything works fine.
 mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/disk
 In /etc/mtab I can find:
 /dev/sdb1 /media/disk fuseblk rw,allow_other,blksize=4096 0 0

Now, I can conclude that nautilus mounts my usb drive using ntfs.
How can I make nautilus mount usb ntfs devices using ntfs-3g.

ps. I recently do an upgrade, more than 100 packages were upgraded. Since
 then, ntfs-3g doesn't work fine.

it a program that know what memory is currently in the server, without it I
had to disassemble? Dmidecode command output, although the size of RAM,

 Hello.

I am running Debian 4.0 on this computer.

The facility Desktop - Lock Screen, is not working.

The facility Applications - Debian - Screen - Lock - KTux, raises a

in the top right corner of the window, and does not require a login, to
 unlock the screen.

The facility Desktop - Logout - Switch User, goes to a login screen, but
then, when the screen is turned off, and, turned back on, some hours later,
the display is returned to how it was before using that facility, without
the login scren appearing, and, without logging in.

As, in these circumstances, the computer can apparently, only be secured,
by shutting it down, a security issue appears apparent.

As the above facilities for locking the screen, do not work properly, is
there any other reliable way to lock the screen, without losing the log in
 session?

 Thank you in anticipation.

This may seem trivial, but is the other box that you are trying to ping on
a local network, or on the Net? If your NICs are set up with one to the Net
and the second one to a local network then you are only going to be able to
ping local machines on the second NIC and use the first to connect to

My theory is that your version was lenny/sid when lenny was testing. Lenny
is *now* stable, but wasn't always. I think you should consider yourself
sid. You may want to dist-upgrade to improve the consistency. Start by
 reviewing /etc/apt/sources.list.

I have 5.0 on a lenny system and squeeze/sid on sid. The file
belongs to the package base-files. Which version of base-files do you

/etc/debian_version can only give you a rough idea about that. It is

 Net)

Yes both ethernet cards are connected to internet.

Do you really mean both cards are connected to the Internet, if so, tell

I can't understand your question. I have two different cable by which I
connect both interfaces.

Are both of your interface cards the same type broadcom card?

Yes both are same as I mentioned.

There is also the chance that udev has identified a single card as, first
eth0 and, second eth1 but that is not what you seem to be saying.

I can't get it. I see the output of lspci command. It clearly shows both

similar? I am looking for something feasible, considering I can't
 afford
to run my own tunnel or proxy.

Do you have access to an SSH server somewhere?

Nope. I wish I had a blinkenshell account, but I can't actually get into
IRC to get two members to vouch for me. Does anyone know of any good
free/cheap shell services that offer IRC? (I wouldn't mind paying say
$1/month for it, but it'd be preferable not to since I don't have my own
  PayPal).

Might want to check out sdf.lonestar.org A shell account can be had for
quite cheap. Runs on BSD though.
