Qemu malfunction

2024-02-08 Thread Leandro Noferini
Ciao a tutti,

I have a home server with openmediavault on (so, debian oldstable) whith
installed the support for virtualization.

From some days I have a malfunction because an image of a debian running
inside is stopping always. If I try to start it after some minutes I get
this error in wirsh

virsh # errore: Disconnected from qemu:///system due to keepalive timeout

Another image (more important luckly) is running normally.

Where I could look for to try to understand what is going on?

In my Asus EEEPC (X205TA) the bios/uefi is 32 bit but the processor is

Because it's not actually easy to use such a thing. What would the pi
present itself as? A block device? Filesystems generally need to rewrite
specific blocks in order to work. You need to be able to access specific
objects. So maybe you expose the pi via CIFS or NFS or somesuch. Ok, but
files are often not written as one atomic operation, especially on
network filesystems. So you can't make the files completely immutable,
you need to be able to append to them while they're being written. So
what's your trigger condition to change from "appendable" to
"immutable"?

There are solutions for this, mostly in the compliance space, but
they're generally pretty niche.

Quite the second: I would like to know if there is a good solution to use a
complete disk with different partitions to use with different file systems for
different uses, knowing that I could have to change the dimensions of these
partitions in the time.

Disk for a small server

Ciao a tutti,

I have a little server (debian stable on raspberry) used by my family and a
little set of people (~10) with services like nextcloud (~100GB growing) and
some more.

This server has an external disk for the data, disk that is becoming too little
so I would like to change it with a bigger one (1TB) and I would like to arrange
this new disk in a confgurable fashion, so I would change the partitions on the
way.

I remained to lvm2: there is something newer/better?

Well, until and unless some person or group tries to vet those Debian
installation images, that may be the best that can be done.

It would be nicer if there was some person or group that tried to vet them, or
maybe even suggesting that something like a requirement that at least one
other person attest that an installation image worked for them (on the target
hardware).

Dear Brian, For these matters, the debian-user mailing list is the right place to go. Indeed, the Community Team is a team which is here to handle interactions between members of the Debian Community that go wrong, and tries to have the Debian Code of Conduct followed by the members of the community in their interactions. For convenience, I cc-ed the list here. As for your specific matter, Windows 10 being an UEFI system, Debian installation has to accomodate for this, and if you used the basic installer, it did indeed attempt to install grub and create the specific entry. Probably something went south there. If you indeed tried to boot "Debian", and it failed, I'd guess it's because, while the grub binary is on the uefi part of your main disk along with the windows bootloader and other potential stuff, the grub configuration is on your external drive which is not yet seen properly when you hit the "debian" entry choice (which is the one you should use, as grub will also allow you to boot windows 10), but it's a wild guess. I'll let some users to chime in, as I admit I'm not the best to help people debug such issues over mail. :/ But I'll keep an eye. There is a question as to whether you want to set up a root account, I think.
If you choose not to, then you get a normal user account.

If you choose to set up a root user:
If you do _not_ set a root password, then the first user you set up is set up
with sudo. In Ubuntu, this is the default behaviour, for example.

I'll now need to go and check a standard (as distinct from an expert install)

No, you seemingly didn't follow what I said.

Isn't "9p" supposed to be the share directory? If it is, why is it owned
by root and has these restrictive permissions?

Assuming
ChrootDirectory -> /srv/sftp -> make this root:root, drwxr-xr-x
share -> /srv/sftp/9p -> make this libvirt-qemu:libvirt-qemu, drwxr-xr-x

Of course. Guessing from what you wrote above, only root can even list
the directory's contents (or change into it, in the first place).

If the mouse still moves, I'd look first into software. Try to log
into your machine either with a Linux console (CTRL-ALT+F1 or some
other function key) or via ssh, as linux fan suggests.

Try to locate some central gui program which might be misbehaving
and kill it (gnome-panel or some such).

If it were a hardware problem, the machine would most probably
freeze completely or at least show non-repeatable symptoms.

I have the same issue trying to install debian on a HP 255 G6 with a SSD
KingDian of 120 Gb: I have nothing in /sys/fs/pstore/

I installed debian before on the same pc but on a different disk.

I have a problem like your and I "solved" it removing and reinserting
psmouse module:

sudo rmmod psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse

Not the better way but it works.

Recently I had almost the same problem on a Thinkpad X240: when the
computer wakes up from a suspension the touchpad often does not work
anymore.

I found that removing and reinsterting psmouse module makes touchpad
working again.

sudo rmmod psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse.

I asked in this list for a suggestion to file a bug report but I had no
response.

Hope it helps!

Now it works, thanks: I changed the configuration for this network
choosing a different DNS from the one provided via DHCP.

I think is a bug of the software of my mobile.

I tried but this command

xorriso -as mkisofs -o ../custom_install.iso -r -J -no-emul-boot
-boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c
isolinux/boot.cat ./isonew

but gives some errors about symlinks and RockRidge extensione, errors
like this:

libisofs: WARNING : Cannot add /doc/FAQ/html/index.html to Joliet
tree. Symlinks can only be added to a Rock Ridge tree.

And the resulting image does not work.

Now I will search some documentation about mkisofs trying to understand
the options in the original command to reproduce with xorriso.

I tried this solution but I had to stop at last passage, when we need to
recreate the new image. In the article there is this command

mkisofs -o ../custom_install.iso -r -J -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4
-boot-info-table -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat ../isonew

But mkisofs does not exist in debian anymore. In its place (?) we have
genisoimage but I cannot find the right options to have the same result.

What do I need to give as options?

Ok, I followed your kind suggestions and I wrote these two little
scripts in /usr/local/sbin/ (working called directly from prompt)

=wifi-suspend.sh===
systemctl stop network-manager.service
rmmod brcmfmac
rmmod brcmutil

=wifi-resume.sh===
modprobe cfg80211
modprobe brcmutil
modprobe brcmfmac
systemctl start network-manager.service
=wifi-resume.sh===

And I tried to call them with these two systemd services

wifi-suspend.service
#/etc/systemd/system/wifi-resume.service
#sudo systemctl enable wifi-resume.service
[Unit]
Description=Stop networkmanager at suspend
Before=suspend.target

wifi-resume.service
#/etc/systemd/system/wifi-resume.service
#sudo systemctl enable wifi-resume.service

Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/usr/local/sbin/wifi-resume.sh

But after resume wifi does not work

What is wrong?

[Asus x205ta] Sound not working on Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio

2018-03-19 Thread Leandro Noferini
Ciao a tutti,

like the previous message, I am trying to configure debian (testing) for
this portable following
https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Asus/X205TA but also
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ASUS_x205ta.

This is the result from aplay -l command:

 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: chtrt5645 [chtrt5645], device 0: 1 []
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: chtrt5645 [chtrt5645], device 1: Deep-Buffer Audio (*) []
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Audio [Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio], device 0: HdmiLpeAudio [Intel HDMI/DP
LPE Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Audio [Intel HDMI/DP LPE Audio], device 1: HdmiLpeAudio [Intel HDMI/DP
LPE Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I am having troubles with sound: following the archlinux wiki I modified
the /usr/share/alsa/ucm/chtrt5645/HiFi.conf file and now I can listen
some sounds with aplay but pulseaudio is dying perhaps due to a bug with
HDMI/DP LPE Audio (see
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100488): how I could force
pulseaudio to use only the first audio card?

Any help?

In the meantime I installed lightdm and I have changed the login screen
with the utility lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings but I would like to use
gdm.

I solved (many months ago) this problem with this configuration:

[Repository Remote]
type = IMAP
remotehost = remotehost
remoteuser = user
remotepass = password
ssl = yes
cert_fingerprint = LONGSERIEOFNUMBERSLETTERS

I don't recall the way to find the fingerprint but you can find
searching.

Thanks a lot for this document because it hits a problem I found many
months ago without solution for me. I would like to use my internal card
reader (Lenovo X240) to boot in tails (https://tails.boum.org)

My reader appears this way:

~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 058f:9540 Alcor Micro Corp. AU9540 Smartcard Reader

The sd card with tails on appears this way:

====
leandro@tricheco:~$ sudo fdisk /dev/mmcblk0

Welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.29.2).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.

Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 7,4 GiB, 7969177600 bytes, 15564800 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: gpt
Disk identifier: F12D15CF-2FC3-4852-8226-9D4F7E625B29

Device Start End Sectors Size Type
/dev/mmcblk0p1 2048 5122047 512 2,5G EFI System

Following your document I edited /etc/grub.d/40_custom adding these
lines:

menuentry 'Tails on CF card' {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
echo "Running nativedisk command. Please wait."
nativedisk
search --label --set=root TAILS
linux /vmlinuz root=LABEL=TAILS ro
initrd /initrd.img
}

But it is not working.

If I give the "nativedisk" command in grub command line I get only

(ahci0)

Where am I wrong?

I made some tries with different configurations and I found it works
normally removing the lines "user" and "groups" from the configuration
file.

Is it right/normal?

[Stable] Trouble with openvpn

2017-03-18 Thread Leandro Noferini
Ciao a tutti,

I have a strange problem with a fresh jessie with the same configuration
of the previous working very well.

If I start openvpn with systemd (with "service openvpn start" command)
or with the gnome panel command the route configured is only for the
server and not the subnet for the vpn. This is the routing table usgin
these commands:

default via 10.150.29.1 dev eth0 proto static metric 1024
10.150.29.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.150.29.101
169.254.0.0/16 dev eth0 scope link metric 1000
192.168.73.1 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.73.5
(192.168.73.X is the subnet for the vpn).

But, if I start openvpn directly with the command

openvpn --config server.conf

the resulting route is correct:

default via 10.150.29.1 dev eth0 proto static metric 1024
10.150.29.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.150.29.101
169.254.0.0/16 dev eth0 scope link metric 1000
192.168.73.0/24 via 192.168.73.1 dev tun0
192.168.73.1 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.73.5
With the same configuration, changing only the authentication, it works
perfectly on a sid with every command I use.

This is a user community around an operating system, not a company
with a product. Downloading Debian should not have changed your
computer. If your grandson installed Debian on your computer, how you
should be able to reboot it depends on the interface installed; you
should at least describe what is on your screen so we can help you.

After so many years using Debian (from around v1.2) it should have been
obvious I had a broken Gnome installation, and it sufficed to force the
dialog dpkg frontend.

In this case, debian-user-portuguese helped me.

Old stable. I never even thought one would upgrade from something even older.

What would be useful?

I worked around the issue by forcing them all into fallback mode, but
I would still learn what went wrong.

Get the Cobol copies (data definition), understand them, create

Read Cobol code, translate into SQL/PSM or your language of choice.

It is really intellectual work, no tool will help you.

Re: OpenOffice vs LibreOffice Questions

2011-06-29 Thread Leandro DUTRA
2011/6/29 John W Foster :
> 1. Why is Debian switching to LibreOffice, per the posting I saw a few
> days ago?

Because the community has switched to LibreOffice.

> 2. Is OpenOffice still going to be supported?

Perhaps by Oracle, the Apache foundation, IBM or whomever may be
interestested, not by Debian, unless some maintainer decides it is worth his
while.

> 3. What makes LibreOffice better than OpenOffice?

Community, which translates into development, support and bug fixing critical
mass.

For now, this holds true, with LibreOffice developing faster, deeper
and better than OpenOffice.org since Oracle, after Sun, declined to fulfill
their promise of involving the community in the development of OpenOffice.org,
and furthermore declined to get involved in the community aroung the Document
foundation and LibreOffice.

In other words, the .org in OpenOffice is a sham, and has been exposed
as such by the Document foundation and LibreOffice.

I would add that copyleft also makes LibreOffice better, but that is
at least slightly more controversial.

> Now I'm concerned that a
> large body of work covering several years will have to be 'ported' to a
> new format & that I will have to learn a lot of new stuff.

No, indeed LibreOffice inherits the same compatibility and data formats as
OpenOffice.org does, and the community which defined the ODF is behind
LibreOffice today, not OpenOffice.org. Furthermore, the licensing model
behind both projects ensure it is easier for LibreOffice to follow
developments from OpenOffice.org than the reverse.

> Any rational comments are appreciated.

I hope I was rational, and clear, enough.

Debug altwin:meta_win under Squeeze

2011-01-13 Thread Leandro Guimarães Faria Corcete DUTRA

Hello!

I just came back from a long exile at uncle Gates’ shadowlands.

One thing I always used until one year and a half ago did not work in a
Squeeze installation, from before the release candidate these days. I
always used XkbOptions altwin:meta_win, so I could have the logo
(Windows) key as Meta in GNU Emacs and for navigating Sawfish, leaving
Alt for other applications and for user-defined Emacs keybindings.

This time around, an old dream was fulfilled: console-setup now
configures both the console and X11 keyboard configurations. Superb.
But this configuration did not work in X11, forcing me to use setxkbmap.
Other XkbOptions also failed to work, such as compose:rwin, nbsp:level3n.

Worse still, while setxkbmap does work for compose and nbsp, it really
messed with altwin:meta_win. The logo keys do behave as Meta, but Alt
continues generating Meta. Before someone asks, the same holds for
compose:menu and for altwin:left_meta_win, even if I run setup_con or
even reboot.

As my Xkb knowledge is totally superficial, and I know nothing of
console-setup, I ask:

* Is there a good tutorial or manual on Xkb and on console-setup, and on
their interaction?

* Anyway, how to best debug the issue, perhaps even generating a bug
report against either console-setup or some X11 package?

Thanks in advance!

I suppose he's talking about that modules loaded for hardware that it's
present but unused, for example: the sound card. For my servers I generally
buy "clons" and they have an embedded sound card. So, we don't need the
sound modules loaded at startup.
Another example (maybe) is the USB, mouse, SATA/PATA when we have a SCSI
controller, etc.

I don't know. I decided long ago not to compile the kernel anymore. I do
prefer blacklisting modules instead. But, it's only my opinion.

error, or the browser (firefox or ie) indefinitely load the page and

First i re-install from scratch the debian thinking it could be an
installation problem. But problem persist.
Then, I do some search on web and different list and I found i could
be a MTU related problem, so i try different configuration in my ppp

Unfortunately, my adsl modem was destroyed last week and I buy a new
one and then the same problem happen.
When I use another router or another computer (winXP) to establish the

Someone have any idea on whats going on ?

According to me, version number means nothing. It's just a number.

I agree, but I meant their features.
Storage Live Migration and Guest SMP for KVM will be supported only on
0.12.0.

This makes me a little insecure about it's stability.
Have you tested KVM with 5 servers or more?

I use it everyday in a 4 core/8G RAM supermicro server.
I mostly run Ubuntu-server as host and windows (XP, Vista) as guest.
We have 4 VM per host.
My application would be a bit different, but that tells me *something*
already.

Sadly there is nobody else sharing their experiences as I was wishing.

Thank you.

[OT] Debian + Virtualization > Sharing Experiences

2009-09-28 Thread Leandro Quibem Magnabosco

Hello,

Maybe this isn't OffTopic, but I added [OT] tag just in case.

I am in charge of installing 5 VMs - Linux[2] + FreeBSD + Windows + PFSense.
I figured it would be better to have ESXi installed, but the server
machine is not compatible with it.
That said, I am searching for the best way to implement this without
using ESXi.

I am not really experienced when it comes to virtualization, so I know I
could learn a lot from your advices.

What would YOU do?

Obviously, I will run Debian "under the hood", but what would you run on
top of it to support 5 VMs?

Thank you for your time.

system solution.

Hmm...
What I said was "I am searching for something like
pfsense[1] for Linux to install in a production server.",
which means I am looking for something with functionalities much like
of what PFsense has.
When I said it was supposed to be installed on a production server, I
meant that I would not like to use a box just for that purpose.

Maybe my English is not quite helpful in discerning concepts, not
allowing me to be perfectly clear.
But yeah... that is what I want.

Since you are asking this on a Debian list, I can point you towards the likes
of Gibraltar (http://www.gibraltar.at/) netward (http://www.netguard.gr/)
XFwall (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xfwall/) or ips-qos
(http://www.coolsolutions.eu/ipsqos/index.php) surely there must be others.
and you can certainly taylor yourself out of packages with the needed
features and a bit of script and web-fu.

>From those you cited, ipsqos looks quite nice, I might give it a try in
a testing environment.

How your firewall on a virtual machine will protect the master host and/or how
will it avoid any routing by bug or mistake at the master host level to pass
through? How will you deal with traffic shaping on your virtual devices when
it will be the master host the one queueing packets.

Now you are the one comparing oranges to apples, right? :)
The way I see it, host firewall and network firewall are different
things.
If Pfsense is in a virtual machine, it will work for the network and
not for the host itself.
The host would have it's own firewall that, in this case, it could be
much much simplier, with just a few scripts.

Since I posted that, I've been talking to some people on IRC that told
me they implemented PFSense on ESXi on medium sizes networks (~500
nodes) with 1G of RAM and it was running under 15% of cpu and about 25%
of IO average, which sounds pretty good.

That it can be done, I have no doubt of. I still think and reason that it's
basically defeating a firewall's main purpouse serving it as a virtualized
resource.

I tested it...
It works great, but ESXi is pretty picky about the hardware it
supports... that's the only think I did not like.
It is now working in a production environment with a CPU cost of only
6% average with all the features I need running.

No doubt it would be best to avoid virtualization if possible, but not
at all costs.

I might try this with some "manual failover" on my hands, just in case...

You are aware pfSense supports CARP, don't you? (last time I tested it was a
bit buggy, though).

Yes, but CARP is not needed for a test.
The test is gone and PFSense @ ESXi is running.

I'm happy! :)

Thank you all for the help, really! :)

Hello Charlie.

Try this:

1 - Download boot.img.gz from this site:
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/
2 - Download some debian image. I've only done this with netinstall but
it *should *be ok to use another one.
3 - Insert your pendrive,  backup everything you have in it and umount
it.
4 - Gunzip it and apply the image - gunzip boot.img.gz && dd
if=boot.img of=/dev/sdd (don't forget to choose your usb device for
your pendrive instead of sdd).
4 - Mount the pendrive and copy the image to it.
5 - Boot your computer with the pen drive as first boot device. Some
bios don't support this, so you would have to hit some F Key. For the
servers I've used this it was F10.
6 - Enjoy :)

This isnât really enough. If no one else gives you a

You really do not need this.

If you are not going with a single filesystem, /boot will
serve you too little.

You might want to check your modules configuration, try
modconf.

If you are using discover, hotplug, kudzu you might want to
blacklist pcmcia, or when applicable simply to prevent these systems
from probing for the PCMCIA bus.

I myself ended up removing discover2, which is more
complicated to configure than discover1. It is XML, the horror!
