Because it's not actually easy to use such a thing. What would the pi present itself as? A block device? Filesystems generally need to rewrite specific blocks in order to work. You need to be able to access specific objects. So maybe you expose the pi via CIFS or NFS or somesuch. Ok, but files are often not written as one atomic operation, especially on network filesystems. So you can't make the files completely immutable, you need to be able to append to them while they're being written. So what's your trigger condition to change from "appendable" to "immutable"? There are solutions for this, mostly in the compliance space, but they're generally pretty niche.

Dear Brian, For these matters, the debian-user mailing list is the right place to go. Indeed, the Community Team is a team which is here to handle interactions between members of the Debian Community that go wrong, and tries to have the Debian Code of Conduct followed by the members of the community in their interactions. For convenience, I cc-ed the list here. As for your specific matter, Windows 10 being an UEFI system, Debian installation has to accomodate for this, and if you used the basic installer, it did indeed attempt to install grub and create the specific entry. Probably something went south there. If you indeed tried to boot "Debian", and it failed, I'd guess it's because, while the grub binary is on the uefi part of your main disk along with the windows bootloader and other potential stuff, the grub configuration is on your external drive which is not yet seen properly when you hit the "debian" entry choice (which is the one you should use, as grub will also allow you to boot windows 10), but it's a wild guess. I'll let some users to chime in, as I admit I'm not the best to help people debug such issues over mail. :/ But I'll keep an eye. If the mouse still moves, I'd look first into software. Try to log into your machine either with a Linux console (CTRL-ALT+F1 or some other function key) or via ssh, as linux fan suggests. Try to locate some central gui program which might be misbehaving and kill it (gnome-panel or some such). If it were a hardware problem, the machine would most probably freeze completely or at least show non-repeatable symptoms. Cheers - t

But, if I start openvpn directly with the command openvpn --config server.conf the resulting route is correct: default via 10.150.29.1 dev eth0 proto static metric 1024 10.150.29.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.150.29.101 169.254.0.0/16 dev eth0 scope link metric 1000 192.168.73.0/24 via 192.168.73.1 dev tun0 192.168.73.1 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.73.5 With the same configuration, changing only the authentication, it works perfectly on a sid with every command I use. -- leandro 1A0B 125B 2E4D 2DAE 4E26 4551 88FB BBCC 7A29 640B https://bbs.cybervalley.org/ChiaveLeandro/gpg.html http://6xukrlqedfabdjrb.onion La caratteritica principale dei miracoli è che non accadono

Re: OpenOffice vs LibreOffice Questions
2011/6/29 John W Foster : > 1. Why is Debian switching to LibreOffice, per the posting I saw a few > days ago? Because the community has switched to LibreOffice. > 2. Is OpenOffice still going to be supported? Perhaps by Oracle, the Apache foundation, IBM or whomever may be interestested, not by Debian, unless some maintainer decides it is worth his while. > 3. What makes LibreOffice better than OpenOffice? Community, which translates into development, support and bug fixing critical mass. For now, this holds true, with LibreOffice developing faster, deeper and better than OpenOffice.org since Oracle, after Sun, declined to fulfill their promise of involving the community in the development of OpenOffice.org, and furthermore declined to get involved in the community aroung the Document foundation and LibreOffice. In other words, the .org in OpenOffice is a sham, and has been exposed as such by the Document foundation and LibreOffice. I would add that copyleft also makes LibreOffice better, but that is at least slightly more controversial. > Now I'm concerned that a > large body of work covering several years will have to be 'ported' to a > new format & that I will have to learn a lot of new stuff. No, indeed LibreOffice inherits the same compatibility and data formats as OpenOffice.org does, and the community which defined the ODF is behind LibreOffice today, not OpenOffice.org. Furthermore, the licensing model behind both projects ensure it is easier for LibreOffice to follow developments from OpenOffice.org than the reverse. > Any rational comments are appreciated. Debug altwin:meta_win under Squeeze
Hello! I just came back from a long exile at uncle Gates’ shadowlands. One thing I always used until one year and a half ago did not work in a Squeeze installation, from before the release candidate these days. I always used XkbOptions altwin:meta_win, so I could have the logo (Windows) key as Meta in GNU Emacs and for navigating Sawfish, leaving Alt for other applications and for user-defined Emacs keybindings. This time around, an old dream was fulfilled: console-setup now configures both the console and X11 keyboard configurations. Superb. But this configuration did not work in X11, forcing me to use setxkbmap. Other XkbOptions also failed to work, such as compose:rwin, nbsp:level3n. Worse still, while setxkbmap does work for compose and nbsp, it really messed with altwin:meta_win. The logo keys do behave as Meta, but Alt continues generating Meta. Before someone asks, the same holds for compose:menu and for altwin:left_meta_win, even if I run setup_con or even reboot. As my Xkb knowledge is totally superficial, and I know nothing of console-setup, I ask: * Is there a good tutorial or manual on Xkb and on console-setup, and on their interaction? * Anyway, how to best debug the issue, perhaps even generating a bug report against either console-setup or some X11 package? Thanks in advance! <>

Re: Firewall solution.
Jesús M. Navarro escreveu: You are aware you are comparing apples to oranges, aren't you? You asked for a firewall when it seems you are looking for a gateway solution. pfSense, as you certainly know is not a script or even a bunch of scripts but a whole system solution. Hmm... What I said was "I am searching for something like pfsense[1] for Linux to install in a production server.", which means I am looking for something with functionalities much like of what PFsense has. When I said it was supposed to be installed on a production server, I meant that I would not like to use a box just for that purpose. Maybe my English is not quite helpful in discerning concepts, not allowing me to be perfectly clear. But yeah... that is what I want. Since you are asking this on a Debian list, I can point you towards the likes of Gibraltar (http://www.gibraltar.at/) netward (http://www.netguard.gr/) XFwall (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xfwall/) or ips-qos (http://www.coolsolutions.eu/ipsqos/index.php) surely there must be others. and you can certainly taylor yourself out of packages with the needed features and a bit of script and web-fu. >From those you cited, ipsqos looks quite nice, I might give it a try in a testing environment. How your firewall on a virtual machine will protect the master host and/or how will it avoid any routing by bug or mistake at the master host level to pass through? How will you deal with traffic shaping on your virtual devices when it will be the master host the one queueing packets. Now you are the one comparing oranges to apples, right? :) The way I see it, host firewall and network firewall are different things. If Pfsense is in a virtual machine, it will work for the network and not for the host itself. The host would have it's own firewall that, in this case, it could be much much simplier, with just a few scripts. Since I posted that, I've been talking to some people on IRC that told me they implemented PFSense on ESXi on medium sizes networks (~500 nodes) with 1G of RAM and it was running under 15% of cpu and about 25% of IO average, which sounds pretty good. That it can be done, I have no doubt of. I still think and reason that it's basically defeating a firewall's main purpouse serving it as a virtualized resource. I tested it... It works great, but ESXi is pretty picky about the hardware it supports... that's the only think I did not like. It is now working in a production environment with a CPU cost of only 6% average with all the features I need running. No doubt it would be best to avoid virtualization if possible, but not at all costs. I might try this with some "manual failover" on my hands, just in case... You are aware pfSense supports CARP, don't you? (last time I tested it was a bit buggy, though). Yes, but CARP is not needed for a test. The test is gone and PFSense @ ESXi is running. I'm happy! :) Thank you all for the help, really! :) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org
