You've got other constraints to worry about other than theoretical 64

Someone on another list once told me:

As long as you can install the package from Debian unstable directly
on stable, which has always been the case, it's against the policy
of backports.org to accept an upload.

Any truth to that? It would explain why XFCE isn't there.

I don't know, I haven't heard about it before. Besides, it is a somewhat
moving target ;-) But it might be the case (I don't know if it is
possible to install XFCE from unstable on stable right now). But even if
it is, it might be a more long term solution to use backports, if the
package is available ofcourse.

linux-image-2.6.25-2-686 is the name of a Debian binary package built
from the linux-2.6 Debian source package, version 2.6.25-5.

I'm not sure why there is a -2 in the binary package name, but it
would come from the source package being setup so that it builds a
binary package with that specific version in it, for some reason
determined by the package maintainers. The idea might be to allow
multiple versions of the 2.6 kernel, built from the same source
package, to be installed alongside each other.

Perhaps only 2 of the 5 Debian versions of 2.6.25 need the ability to
be installed alongside each other (as opposed to just upgrading the
current kernel image in place).

The Debian changelog might shed some light on the subject:

http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.25-5/changelog

David.

Thank You David, that clarifies it a bit for me.

Dell xps 1330 laptop, problems with multimediakeys.

Hello :-)

I have debian testing on my new dell laptop, it has a number of
specialkeys, play/pause, stop, forward and so on... I have made them
useful with lineakd and it works, sort of... When i press one of the
keys they are very sensitive and the result is that if I press play 5-7
instances of amarok will start op. Is there a way to lower their
sensitivity?

By the way, the laptop is brand new, and besides this little hickup,
everything just works!

well, the hackish solution is to use a wrapper script that checks for
the existence of an already running program (or maybe an instance of
the script already running, since it probably happens pretty fast) and
only allows one instance to be started.

A
I thought of that too, but it's just not very elegant. It would be nicer

backwards? Is 7.11 really the LATEST driver?
TIA,

To answer my own question, when I started to build the debs from the
installer, the version came out as 8.433-1. To be consistent, ATI should
have called it 8.43.3-1 but at least not it appears to be a later version

It is a later version, this is ATI's new versioning scheme. The new
system will be: year.month .

And sooner or later that scheme will be on the modules as well.

I use gthumb, and it claims that 90-degree rotation of jpegs is

a library for handling JPEG files, I assume they all rotate them
lossless.

Anyway to confirm it?

Hm, dunno if there is a certified way, but perhaps an md5 before you
rotate, then rotate, save, rotate back and md5 again? I have no idea if
some of the metadata in a jpeg will be changed by this.

Did you manage to compile the driver with module-assistant? It didn't
work for me. I had to compile the driver by hand. m-a couldn't find

Nevertheless it works fine with a very good performance.

By now the are also pre-compiled modules in unstable.

The new driver rt73usb from package rt2x00-source with the new wireless

I had no problems on etch with m-a, but on Lenny the driver wont compile

First...vim. (Yeah, I'm old school) OK. I'm in text entry mode and I want

opened and a character (B or D or ...) is put in the first position of
that line. If I switch to navagation mode, then the arrow keys work
properly. Am I dealing with a vim problem, a terminal problem or a keyboard
mapping/character set problem? Whichever it is, how do I solve it?

Dunno, I don't see that kind of behavior from my Vim...

Second...kde. I like KDE. When I saw the first versions, I thought it was
great. Moved me away from pure terminals in a hurry. Now that I'm using the
newest version, its got an annoyance that I'd like to shut off. Whenever I
put a CD or DVD in the CD/DVD drive, I get a pop up menu on the screen asking
me what I'd like to do now. To me, that's an annoyance and a waste of CPU
cycles that I'd like to get rid of, but I couldn't find an option in the KDE
configuration to turn that off. How do I turn off the looking for a CD/DVD

The fact that a file got touched so that it appears to have been created

You can try to purge the package and then install it again.

Perhaps dpkg--reconfigure apache2 will work as well.

The smaller Creative players are tiny, rugged, reliable, have

other brands of players.

MUVO TX FM :: usb 2.0, good FM tuner

Beware: Some of the larger Creative players require the use of

And the gnomad in Debian is borked!

You need to compile your own, but then it just works.

It almost work with libmtp in amarok and konqueror, you can erease files

if you have partition of 10GB, if you format the partition with

Hi Magnus,

the tarballs would build fine except with dpkg-buildpackage. You said you

I've been building the SVN versions with excellent results; no crashes, the
occasional new feature, and minor bug fixes. After $(svn up) I run:

beryl/trunk$ nice -n 10 make newdebs

That will build the deb packages, in order, and install each package as it
goes. It will use sudo and prompt you for the password when it needs it,
so you might want to go ahead and run $(sudo echo) first if you plan to
leave the build going unattended. After it finishes, it will put the debs
in the output/ directory, where is the SVN revision.

The only drawbacks to this are:

a) if the build fails at some point but has already installed some packages
it built successfully, you could end up with mismatched versions of Beryl's
different packages. I usually keep a copy of the last build that I've
observed to be stable so I can revert to it if necessary. However, it's
been a while since I've had any build errors, and even then, if you really
want to, you can find another SVN revision that builds.

b) Unfortunately, the way Beryl's build process is set up, it must, for
example, install beryl-core before it can build beryl-plugins. This is
what leads to drawback A above (maybe I have these in the wrong order).

Again, build errors seem to getting more rare, and Beryl and Emerald seem
quite stable, so I recommend you give the SVN version a try.

Please cc my email if you want me to see any replies.

Adam

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to run SVN, but perhaps I should give it a
try...

I'm far from an expert on this, but have you installed the beryl-dev
package? I think it gets built before libberylsettings. I don't fully (or
even slightly) understand the Beryl build process, but I've seen similar
problems that were solved by going ahead and installing beryl-core, and
perhaps beryl-dev. Are you sure that the entire build finishes without
errors when you just run make?

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to run SVN, but perhaps I should give it a

Well, I have to say, the SVN Makefile makes building and installing dead
simple. In fact, I bet the Makefile holds the answers to this problem...

If you really can't figure it out, try the Beryl forums, IRC channel, or bug
tracker. The devs are quite helpful.

Ok, I'll take a look at these options, thank you :-)

Re: USB 802.11g wireless adapter for Debian

2006-03-06 Thread Magnus Pedersen

Andrew Archibald wrote:

Can anyone recommend an 802.11g USB wireless adapter which is supported by
the Linux kernel?

I am running the latest Debian testing on i386. Currently I use a device
supported by ndiswrapper the windows driver but this situation isn't
ideal. For example I have to reinstate the kernel module every time I
upgrade the kernel. And the windows drivers are non-free. And it’s all a
bit delicate in terms of stability.

I've spent quite a lot of time on a search engine (google) reading up on
linux wireless support and reviewing the archives of mailing lists. I've
uncovered some hardware compatibility lists discussions but up-to-date
recommendations seem to be rare. Information from 2004 is clearly not
going to help me with chipsets changing as quickly as they do!

If it makes any difference to the availability of hardware I’m in the UK
but happy to order online anything that would work.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers,
Andrew.

Testing, could not start kdeinit. check your installation since yesterdays updates

2006-02-19 Thread Magnus Pedersen

I am seeing this on two machines.

It dosn't matter if I use kdm or startx, I get that error in a small
window just before the kde-splasscreen. And my syslog is filled with
dbuserrors like this:

Feb 19 12:29:35 localhost hcid[6842]: Can't send D-BUS inquiry start
message

Whats up anyone?

Sorry for my poor english, it is not my first language.

Yup, get the libXft 2.1.7 library and replace that shared object library as
below and it will work, it is only a hack but it works..

I fixed this by using the lib from a box with libXft2 2.1.7 instead of
2.1.8.2-3.

# mv libXft.so.2.1.2 libXft.so.2.1.2-2.1.8.2-3
# scp [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib/libXft.so.2.1.2 .

Then everything worked again.

Note: I did grab the 2.1.7 deb but when I did the apt-get install / upgrade,
it wiped it out, very nasty! The worst part is people probably will not see
this until they reboot!

# startkde
kdeinit: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libXft.so.2: undefined symbol:
FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden

Using mirrors.kernel.org as my repo, any way to fix this issue?

# nm -D libXft.so.2 |grep Glyph
 U FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden

Could you make that lib available somewhere or perhaps mail it to
me, then I can make it available?

Re: OT : K9Copy Problems

When I check out the newly created ISO, it is only 2MB, which I know is
not how it should be, considering the original was 4.9GB (.2GB too big
to fit a SL DVD-R). Apparently, all the ISO contains is the DVD menu.
This is confirmed by loading the ISO in XINE. The menu indeed comes up,
but clocking on 'Play Movie' gives me a 'Source can't be read' error.

So now, if anyone here can make heads or tails of the above problem, can
you please tell me how to actually get this damn program to work?
k9copy looks like the only native Linux solution for compressing a DVD
image to fit on a 4.7GB disk. It's just a shame that there are no help
files or an actual support forum for this, because otherwise, it looks
like a potential killer app for Linux, or at least a great component for
a suite of potential killer apps for full-blown DVD production.

As an update in the troubleshooting process, I went ahead and burned
the ISO directly to a DVD+RW disk. The problem remains. However, I
do see now that although the menu was properly burned to the disk as
VIDEO_TS.VOB (1,016KB MPEG Video), the movie itself shows as
 VTS_01_1.VOB (0KB Empty Document).

I'm not sure what to try next in the troubleshooting process.

I have had problems with keeping the original menus on the DVD's.
Try to skip that.

How could I determine which process matches this connection?
How could I determine if this is something worrying?

Thanks for any help and links.
