32to64 decision
i have an old small office server providing dhcp/dns/squid/custom cyrus debs/postfix/samba services which at the time of lenny did not have enough ram to choose the 64bit version. now that i've managed to get more ram into it i'd like to migrate it to 64bit. nothing really requires 64bit but rather i feel more peace of mind knowing i'm getting rid of the last 32bit box. which path should i choose: wheezy32 > wheezy64 > jessie64 OR wheezy32 > jessie32 > jessie64? which one should be easier? I previously did a wheezy32 > wheezy64 for it's backup box and went ok, even if there is no comprehensive updated howto documentation available (or wasn't I able to find it, if it exists). i am wondering if jessie 32to64 is anyway smoother than wheezy 32to64. tia
keyboard is not working with xtightvncserver on debian-arm
I have a Debian installation working on my Qnap TS-109. This computer has an ARM processor, and the Debian Version is lenny. I need a VNC server. One that keeps the session open when I disconnect the viewer. It looks like my only choice is xtightvncserver. With the previous version of Debian (etch), which is running on my NSLU2, I use RealVNC server successfully (package name vncserver). When I connect with my vnc viewer from my PC (either Xubuntu 8.04 or Ubutuntu 8.04 eeePC, with either vncviewer or xtightvncviewer), I cannot enter text with the keyboard. The display and the mouse works fine. When I enter text with the keyboard, I'm generating garbage characters on the remote end. For example, when I type 'q', I get 'l'. The 'enter' key doesn't work at all, and so on. Has anybody else experienced this with Debian Lenny on ARM? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Installing Debian
Hi, I'd like to run Debian. So far, I have used mostly Suse, Ubuntu and Fedora, and I'd like to give Debian a try. I've got a stock PC with a 64-bit capable Intel Celeron, a Via Mainboard, and a 80 GB SATA harddisk. Opensuse is running fine on it. OK, I boot with debian-40r4-amd64-netinst.iso, and the installer is not recognizing my hard drive. The syslog is saying something like this: Loading PCMCIA adapter bridge driver module: i82365 FATAL: module i82365 not found Missing modules 'ide-mod (Linux IDE driver), ide-probe-mod (Linux IDE probe driver), ide-detect (Linux IDE Detection), ide-floppy (Linux IDE Floppy) end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0 By the way, this computer doesn't have a floppy. What's going wrong with it? Thanks in advance for your help, Gordon -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: dot in folder name in Courier or Dovecot
Yes, I defined '/' as separator in the namespace with Dovecot. I'm able to create folders that contain dots in their name, and they get messed up in Thunderbird, as Ron confirms. With Cyrus, I can create folders with subfolders with dots in their name correctly. That also works with Thunderbird. So, it looks like it's not Thunderbird's fault. The problem with Cyrus is that Cyrus refuses to accept a large number of emails that it considers to be not "standard compliant". E.g. it rejects specific "From"-headers that Mozilla is using. Even though this applies to only 1% of all email, it is still an enormous number of them. On the web, it is suggested to use a sed-script to remove these offending headers from the mbox files before copying them to Cyrus. However, Mozilla's own index files (.msf) get confused if the underlying mbox files change, and some emails just disappear. (There are also emails disappearing if the .msf file is deleted). BTW, mbox/Dovecot does not support hierarchical folders. Nicolas KOWALSKI wrote: Public Mailing Lists <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: No, I can't change the dots to underscores, sorry. Hi Ron, brilliant observation. :-) I can't wait to upgrade from this ancient Mozilla, once I get this imap stuff to work... No, I can't change the dots to underscores, sorry. Cyrus appers to be really smart about dots and change them secretly to charets, or something. Is it possible to have any other imap server do this the same way, i.e. transparently? Actually, I like the idea of maildir of having each message in a single file, even though I don't understand why maildir uses a dot for folder hierarchy instead of using a directory hierarchy provided by the file system... Assuming a default Debian exim4 installation, you need to switch it to using maildir rather than mbox format, I believe all IMAP servers require this. switching between keymaps in X
Hello I need to configure my X 4.1.0-16 in woody on x86 PC to switch between different keyboard maps. I need standard us/uk keymap and cz_qwerty keymap. So I change /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 as follows: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Keyboard" Driver "keyboard" Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" Option "XkbModel" "pc102" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbVariant""cz_qwerty" EndSection But now I don't know how to switch that 2 keymaps (without restarting X and replacing XkbLayout). I looked for the solution in archive but didn't found anything. Old versions of X (3.3.6) use Scroll Lock or Break. Please, can you tell me how to solve this thank you marek cermak -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Problems with resolver
Hello I have local 10.0.0.0/24 network connected through SNAT server with linux 2.4.7 to the internet. All hosts from local network I have in /etc/hosts, but it looks like this file is ignored or what. in resolv.conf I have search domain.cz, this is domain of NAT server. Next lines are nameservers 127.0.0.1 and DNS outside. In hosts.conf I have order hosts, bind and multi on. When I try host 10.0.0.67 I get answer Name: station11 Address: 10.0.0.67 but when I want host station11 I get station11.domain.cz does not exist. No matter If local bind is on/off. And when I try host server I get answer for external addres of it including domain.cz. Bind is only configured as cache DNS, without any domains. I need internal addres without domain name. Samba server on that server answer only to some machines. Either communicating with PDC is problematic so authentication is not good. It is so confused. All is on woody linux 2.4.7 i386. Where Is the problem? Thank for all. Marek Cermak

Tried again... same result. > I had the same problem on a thinkpad 365. Thinkpads do not boot from a bzImage, only from zImages. Less than 1 Percent of existing Machines show this behaviour. You must make a new Kernel like described on the readme of the rescue disk. (You must have a running linux machine with the kernel sources installed for this). Don't forget to configure the kernel with ramdisk, initrd support (explained in the readme). Then place it on the rescue disk, named "linux". Some Kernel sources (I don't now why and which) have the ramdisk in /dev/ram, others in /dev/ram0. therefore you must boot somewhere with your custom kernel (maybe you can avoid this step, try it) and cd to the mounted rescue disk. There is a script which sets the root image up to boot from the ramdisk. If /dev/ram0 isn't found change the script, so that it looks for /dev/ram instead. I would prefer if debian would run from zImages, not from bzImages. They're not much bigger, and there are still a lot machines around denying to boot a bzImage. You should neither try to place a bzImage on the harddisk to boot (that is what the debian kernel package does), it freezes at the same point. This makes kernel upgrades a hairy process. A question at the end: Does somebody know how to install the pcmcia package on a freshly disk-installed debian package without having to compile it? (I needed that because I have no cdrom on my laptop). The pcmcia package requires too much to install it by disks. Some rescue disk makers should probably think about that. ftp install may be nice, but without pcmcia support there are many machines excluded from this very comfortable install method. -- Lukas Eppler (godot) http://www.fear.ch telnet://soil.fear.ch: talk:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
