Redo your partition config and > give plenty of room on the one that will hold '/usr'. You need space to unpack the packages, I had the same problem using apt, it was /var that got full. I've just done the installation in 4 ou 5 steps, selecting the packages to install so that some space is left on the partition. When I got stuck I just removed one of the packages and every thing went OK. I think I could probably try to mount a "big partition" on var or one the subdirectories used by apt. BTW why apt is using /var now? (I was using ftp) According to the installation instructions my /var is only 100MB and that revealed too small. Problems installing Staroffice
Hello again, I sent a mail earlier about upgrading from Hamm to Slink, some of the problems are now solved (dselect removed the installed packages, the new kernel is OK, etc.), but I have new problems. When I try to install Starffice I get the following message: can't find the StarOffice archives in /tmp. Did you place them in a different directory? Please give me another directory. giving the apt archive doesn't work. Any idea or do I have to mail the package maintainer? Also Xfree treats my backspace key as 'erase', I can probably change that with xmodmap but it doesn't seem like a 'clean' solution to me. Does anyone know where this comes from and how to do (I have a French keyboard and the appropriate XF86Config). Upgrading from Hamm to Slink
Hello, I'm upgrading from Hamm to Slink, I didn' reboot yet but everything seems OK except for a few minor (?) problems: - I started upgrading with dselect/ftp then I downloaded apt and am actually using it. the problem is that I have a few packages left in "/var/cache/apt/archives", though I'm (almost) sure they're already installed. that makes my disk space full and I can't install anything new. Is it save to use dpkg --remove? Or what is going on? - I have a custom 2.0.36 kernel supporting aic7xxx, is it safe to replace it with the standard new one? - dselect is unable to configure jadetex because of TeX complaining about a "\&" unknown command when trying to compile the format file. - I've got my old kernel (costum 2.0.36) on a floppy, could it still rescue me if ever I have troubles rebooting? Hello, I've done a very stupid thing taht removed the /bin/cat binary, so I think I have to reinstall the textutils package (is there any other/better solution?), but can't do it since it is marked installed/up-to-date. It usually does *not* come with the distribution, but should be written by the local maintainer. There is an example of the local guide, written by L. Lamport for *his* site. I didn't find it in Debian's TeTeX installation but I have it on another installation, I could send it to you if you're interested. I also wrote a local guide for our site, in French. UML Software for Linux
Hello, I'd like to know if there is any (free) software for UML under Linux. For the moment I'm using a commercial software under Windows. If there's no such software I think I'll propose it as a student project, but then I have a few question : 1) Would there be any legal/copyright problems (concerning UML) and how to deal with them? 2) Till now the student projects focused on teaching OO analysis and design and team work. I'd like to add to those "practical" considerations and I like the Debian policy. The problem is that I'm new to Debian, I know almost nothing about its development and still didn't have time to read the corresponding docs. Where should I start knowing that implementation will be the last thing we'll do? 3) Is there any French documentation for developers? I think that only a few students will be able to understand the English ones. 4) Any other idea or suggestion? Actually it is very simple when you know how to do it (and I was doing something so stupid I'm ashamed to talk about it :-) ). All I have to do is set my boot disk ID to 1 in the SCSI contoller utility and the disk options in lilo.conf. I was a bit confused because I have three or four kernel images. OK, here it is: I have 2 SCSI disks, with Windows NT on the first and Linux on the second. Windows NT is booting Ok (hopefully, I didn't retry for a while now but I don't see why it shouldn't). I usually boot Linux from floppy which is also OK. Now using the SCSI utility I set my boot disk ID to 1, then it apprently tries to boot from the second disk but it hangs after outputting LI. I added "disk" options in lilo.conf and tried to change boot and/or root to /dev/sdb* instead of /dev/sda*, but nothing seems to work. By the way /vmlinuz exists (it was symbolic link to the kernel in /boot, then I replaced it with a copy of the same image). Is this clear enough? Thanks for your help. That's right: I've got a SCSI control utility which I can run during startup, it allows me to determine the disk to boot from. I have Windows NT on disk 0 and Linux on disk 1, setting the id to 1 seems to start booting from the second hard disk but then it hangs after printing LI. I still don't know if the problem is due to my actual configuration: file systems are mounted from /dev/sdb* and I'm not quite sure if I have to and how to change this: I've tried various LILO configurations with /dev/sd[ab] for boot and root but none seems to work. *-- Mamoun ALISSALI LIUM Tel: (33-2) -02-43 83 38 47 UNIVERSITE DU MAINEFax: (33-2) -02-43 83 38 68 Avenue Olivier MessiaenE-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 72085 LE MANS CEDEX 9 http://www-ic2.univ-lemans.fr/~alissali
