What versions of kde are you using on the debian and red hat machines?

I am the kde maintainer for debian, and I try to keep the package
 reasonably
up to date, though it's often a bit behind the rpm.
Well, after I have read that message from Miguel Figueroa, I´ve
downloaded the actual copy of the Debian-kde-packag, but it is the same
with my system. kfm, the panel and the window-manager freeze after a
very short time (especially when using context menus on the desktop).
I am using Debian 1.24 (from a Cheapbytes CD) on a P133 machine.

I am using the following archives:

libkde0_0_10_01-1_i386.deb
libgif2_2_3-1_i386.deb.gif
qt1_1_2-3.deb

Does this mean that there is a kde-package for the pre-alpha-release?

Thanks in advance!

Network Audio System problems

1997-06-28 Thread Marc Saric
Hi all,

Finaly I have managed to get XPilot running with sound, recompiling it
with the NCD-Sound-option and Network Audio System (NAS) V1.2 P4
(according to the auinfo readout), which is available as Debian-package.

Unfortunately NAS does not have a good sound quality, there are always
errors when playing sounds -this is definitely NOT related to the
sound-files or the sound-card (old 8-bit Creative Labs Soundblaster),
because other sound-programs, which does not depend on NAS (i.e. bplay)
are able to play these *.wav- and *.au-files without errors. The problem
is, that every sound-file ends with an anoying crack -this is
consistent for all soundfiles (different sources and different formats)
I have tested (either with XPilot or with the auplay-soundplayer
included in the NAS package).

Does anybody know about this bug or has a sollution for it?

(Yes, I have read the XPilot/NAS-man-pages, the
Sound/Sound-Play-HOWTO´s, but still have no clue).

Re: Books on Debian

1997-06-24 Thread Marc Saric
W Paul Mills wrote:

My start with Debian came about 6 months ago. I found dselect and
the rest of the packaging system confusing. Frustrating at that time
was man pages that said they were not up to date - read the docs.
The doc files also said they were not up to date - read the man pages.
Now that was very circular and not at all helpful. Someone totally
new to linux would probably be even more confused. Often those new
to linux do not even know how to find and view the documentation. A
book would make a nice security blanket :-)
I think that is a good point -I have started using Debian (after a
unsuccessfull try with an old german S.U.S.E.-distribution) aprox. 1
month ago -there are still many essential thing, which I don´t undertand
and which are not working by now. One of the first problems I solved was
how to get some orientation in the widespread -filesystem tree and how
to use man-pages, HOWTO´s and readme-files.

A good basic book about the concepts of (Debian)-Linux is very helpfull
during the first time -when I am an experienced user, I will maybe
think, that this was useless, but from today´s point of view, I can only
underline what you have said.

XTerm-color

1997-06-21 Thread Marc Saric
Hi all,

I would like to know what is going wrong with my setup for the Xterm:
I put the following lines in my Xresources-file (in /etc/X11)

#ifdef COLOR
*customization: -color
#endif

but nothing happened, when I start an xterm, it is still b/w.
I am using Debian 1.2.4 from the Cheapbytes CD with a 16 bpp
S3-X-Server.

XPilot-package and sound

1997-06-14 Thread Marc Saric
Hi,

I don´t know if the maintainer of the Xpilot-package is reading this
mailing-list, but if so, he/she might be able to answer my little
question:

After trying to get the sound-thingy running with XPilot, I failes to do
so, and I´m asking myself if there is sound-support at all compiled into
the Debian-version of Xpilot.

Otherwise someone might give me a hint (or are you playing Quake all the
time :-))

Thanks in advance!

xpilot.deb and Sound

1997-06-11 Thread Marc Saric
Hi All,

I have a question concerning the xpilot-package in Debian 1.2.4
(Cheapbytes Debian Release 1.2).

I don´t understand the ins and outs of sound support with this game:
I have a recompiled kernel with Soundblaster-support running (and it
works perfectly with other programs like bplay, maelstrom, the
afterstep-audio module and so on).

The question is: Does it have sound support as described in the
man-page, or is this special version compiled without sound-support (or
do I need a special sound server, which I might have forgotten (the
X-pilot-FAQ says something about a rplayd -I´m not shure if I have this
program).

Thanks in advance!

Installation problems

1997-04-25 Thread Marc Saric
Hi everybody,

I have downloaded Debian Linux 1.2.9 from ftp.uni-mainz.de, but failed
to get it installed on my machine.

Reasons:

First, the dselect-setup asks me for a /local/binary-i386-path and
package-list. But there isn´t such a subdirectory (or a symbolic link to
another dir), or more exactly, there isn´t such a subdir containing a
packages-list (plain-text or .gz).

I can go on when I simply ignore this message (by typing none), but
the program fails to install the selected packages stating some error
message about a not-found dir or file.

It is likely that something went wrong during download, or that I have
overseen the mentioned /local-packages, but I don´t know exactly.

Any help appreciated!
