How to compile kernel with debian?

1997-07-08 Thread Max Stevens
Hello everyone,

I used to have a slackware system and thus got used to the old
rigamorole involved in compiling a new kernel. However, with debian,
there seems to be more steps involved (at least, there are debian
readmes distributed with the kernel source, and supposedly some sort
of debian makefile).

Can somebody please explain or point me towards where it is explained
just exactly what is different between compiling a kernel on debian
and compiling a kernel 'normally'.

Thanks,
M

Re: TeTex-Problem

1997-06-15 Thread Max Stevens
Though I have yet to upgrade to TeTeX myself, I encountered this
problem when I installed the old latex packages.

As root, go to /usr/lib/texmf/ini (or the TeTeX equivalent) and, if
there's a makefile there you can just type 'make' but otherwise type
'initex latex.initex'. This will create a latex.fmt which is the
default format file it's looking for.

Re: [META] Use of the list for non-Debian matters

1997-06-09 Thread Max Stevens
As long as we're talking about this list and filters, I just joined
this list and I made sure I had a mailfilter going *before I even
joined*. I mean come on people, there's always going to be noise on a
mailing list. Filtering it is better then complaining about it.

I recommend (highly highly highly) procmail, since it can do
everything under the sun. My procmailrc file (or a watered down
version thereof) is...
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin
MAILDIR=$HOME/Mail
LOGFILE=$MAILDIR/proclog   # recommended
LOCKEXT=.procmaillock
LOGABSTRACT=all# while debugging, make it log a lot

:0:
* ^TO.*maxmax
ibm_junk

:0:
* ^TOdebian-user
debian-user

:0:
* ^From.*jomsteve
from_me

But of course, now I'm not talking about debian specific stuff
anymore.

Re: [META] Use of the list for non-Debian matters

1997-06-09 Thread Max Stevens
Although the creation of a 'Debian-guru' list would have the same
effect as creating a 'Debian-newbie' list. Everybody would ask their
questions on the guru list since
a. All the gurus would be reading it (obviously)
b. None of the gurus would bother reading the regular list
anymore (or at least not in any detail)
c. Everybody thinks their question is really difficult and needs
a guru to answer it.

list of names on the user list?

1997-06-09 Thread Max Stevens
Hi,

I was wondering if there is a way to get the list of email addresses
that the user account gets sent out to. I'm interested in this partly
because I've had a few people from the list write me and I can't write
them back because their email address is bad, and partly because I
want to avoid open lists - avoid spam.
