a quick apt-get update and dist-upgrade would uninstall kde. Is this
intentional ?

Re: Today's woody update -- obsolete/local packages

It's the transition to the new 'testing' distribution - see the recent
archives of debian-devel-announce. woody is now testing, and sid is
unstable. If you intend to track unstable, you should probably start
referring to it as 'unstable' rather than as 'woody'.
Hi Colin,

so package updates can't be expected in woody for the next 14 days ? What
about the Xfree packages and the KDE packages since they change in a very
frequent interval ?

And, do you know any of these ?

How to install libqt-dev, kdebase-dev with apt on unstable ?

2000-12-19 Thread Michael Meding
Hi all,

specifying the package names does not work, neither does apt-get install
kdebase-dev.

So how to get the packages, despite downloading all and dpkg -i'ing 'em ?

Thanks.

Re: Banner server avoidence

2000-12-19 Thread Michael Meding
Hi,

Blocking out banner ads, while understandable, is not really moving toward
 a solution.
Aha. excuse me why not ? Why do you think debian is a success ? Because
people like to do it this way. Without being influenced by anything
commercial. Do you remember the days of the internet where sites were driven
by enthusiastic people not craving for money by selling ad space ?
We are all sick of primetime television-style advertising. What is needed
is a way for buyers to make the first move and opt in to a stream of highly
focused and targeted information that, for the seller, will result in the
sales of products and services. Properly executed, sellers will like this
because of the very high percentage of sales they make -- these will be the
quintessential qualified prospects. Buyers will like it because they won't
be bombarded with sales pitches for products of no interest to them.
I typically, or better to say, in all cases ever ignore ads. They simply
steal my time which is very valuable.

If that means that sites have to close because they can't make any money out
of me. May it be. I myself have a page dedicated to linux. A couple of visits
once in a while, but depsite free spech ads of freepatents I do not burden my
readers with ads. I simply do the site. It is not much, not sophisticated, no
fancy flash anims nada. Pure information, and I certainly don't want to earn
something from it.

Banning ads is the way to go. With all consequences. If I like ads, I want
them, I want being informed then I opt in. No selective reading required to
oversee ads.

If I would like to buy a product via the internet, then I search for it. I do
not want to be disturbed by companies who like to sell me services.

And I certainly don't want this U.S. thing where they call you at home and
ask for the person paying for the telephone, trying to convince to change for
long distance. It is annoying, they steal my time. Same with spam, they do it
on my time (I have to download it and delete it). Banner ads are the same, as
soon as sites are to crammed up, I stop visiting them. I think that a lot
people think the same.

Sound only as root ?

2000-12-17 Thread Michael Meding
Hi all,

on my recent woody I only get sound when running as root (either running
completely as root or su ing into root from a normal user under x will give
me sound output).

So I guess this is a standard feature of debian. How to change that ?

TIA

during make-kpkg I get i386-none not in remapping table

2000-11-18 Thread Michael Meding
Hi all,

I use potato with dpkg and debhelper from woody. When I try to compile
2.4.0-test11-pre7 after configuring it and doing a make-kpkg I get an
error saying that i386-none is not in remapping table and not found in
arch. So I have to specify --arch=i386. Doing this I get after a while
of compiling a make 1 error saying that i386-linux-gcc could not be
found. Doing an ln -s gcc i386-linux-gcc in /usr/bin I get i386-linux-ld
command not found again with error make 1.

So what is the proper way to do this, respectively, what am I doing
wrong.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hope that helps.

How to change imwheelrc to scroll with mozilla line by line ?

2000-11-17 Thread Michael Meding
Hi all,

mozilla keeps scrolling a page up or down even after adding a mozilla
section in the imwheelrc (exactly like the navigator section) and then
changing Page_Up and Page_Down to just Up and Donw respectively.

Anybody has any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I have installed latest KDE debs and after that netscape won't bold out
my unread messages any more. All messages do look like they are already
read now.

So where is the bug now, in KDE or in netscape ?

Anybody got a similar problem ?

System is debian 2.2 with XFree4.01e and latest and greatest (?) kde2.

dpkg-buildpackage and desired target and changed config files in the build directory

2000-11-09 Thread Michael Meding
Hello everybody,

I am trying to find out where to change the environment variables to get
the package build for a specific target (i.e. instead of i386 i686).
Also I would like to know how to change something in a configuration
file in the build directory and then get the build done with the changed
configuration file (because dpkg-buildpackage wipes out my build tree
everytime it runs).

Thanks in advance for any help.
