xlibs mistake

2002-11-02 Thread Mirek Dobsicek
Hi,

after upgrading to xlibs 4.2.1-3 (sarge)
I noticed it refused to
setxkbmap -layout to cz/cz_qwerty/sk/sk_qwerty/czsk

other layouts were ok

solved be coping cz/sk layouts from xlibs_4.1.0-16(woody).

downloading packages

2002-10-23 Thread Mirek Dobsicek
Hi,

A friend of mine would like to install debian at his home computer,
but he dont want to bother with all 7 CDs.

He would like to burn one CD with base system and desired packages and
at home install from this CD.

My question is how can he easily download wanted packages with
dependencies... . He is running FreeBSD, so tools like apt-get -download
only are not for him.

I'm surprised your notebook does not have a serial port. If it does,
you can purchase a NULL serial cable for communications.

If this task is too hard to do, it would also fine if I could

debian on old notebook

2002-04-05 Thread Mirek Dobsicek

Hi all,

I have few question. Most of time I'm at college and twice a months
I go home for a weekend. I dont have computer at home, and sometimes
I need to continue at my work (coding and writing articles in VIM).

I'd like to buy some old notebook and install Debian on in.
Right now I can buy i486 at 66Mhz, 8MB RAM, 500MB HDD
for $10 US dolars.

Is it good idea to try install Debian on it? Is it possible with 8MB of RAM?

I need it just for VIM writting, man pages displaying, and Lynx offline
browsing.

What could be the way to install Debian? I'm thinking that easist way
is to connect notebook with my computer with parallel cable and
install from internet.

Or should I forget it and save $10?

Please share your opinion, sincerely Mirek

ooop, mistake, right prize is $100

You will find the machine extremely slow, compiling anything will take forever.
Kernel compiles in about a day on one of those. Sure you won't be doing it,
but I just wanted to show you the whole situation. If you can spend enough to
get a low end pentium you would be a lot happier.

Right now this notebook luckly run W95(really good usable), so I hope it
can run few consoles at good speed.

b\ session statistic eg. for ftp: username, password, used

Re: autofs

2002-02-13 Thread Mirek Dobsicek

Hi, I tried it both, but it still does not work

I did:
cd /
mkdir mounted

then edited configs
here is my /etc/auto.master:
  /mounted /etc/auto.mnt --timout=5

here is my /etc/auto.mnt:
  floppy -fstype=auto,umask=000 :/dev/fd0

then
/etc/init.d/autofs restart

then
cd ~elf
ln -s /mounted/floppy myfloppy

then inserted floppy disk and
cd myfloppy
the led on floppy drive went on, shell become frozen for few second and
then wrote bash: cd: myfloppy: neither file nor directory

I thought that my floppy drive is broken, but no
fdformat /dev/fd0 and mkfs -t ext2 /dev/fd0 went fine

Understabable. I've found the autofs documentation to be a bit hard to
follow also, but I did eventually figure it out. You can't have a mount
point of /, so use something convenient like /mnt, however, you can
then set up a symlink so that it looks like it's at /. Try this:

In /etc/auto.master
/mnt/etc/auto.mnt --timeout=5

In /etc/auto.mnt
floppy -fstype=auto,sync :/dev/fd0

Then:
ln -s /mnt/floppy /floppy

Then whenever you try to access /floppy it will automatically mount
/dev/fd0 on /mnt/floppy, but because of the symlink you can access it as
/floppy. After 5 seconds of not trying to access /floppy (and not being
in the directory in any shell) it will unmount it.

The big confusion came to me because there are actually 2 man pages for
autofs, and the default one doesn't really explain the format of the
files. Try man 5 autofs.

cups+samba

2002-02-01 Thread Mirek Dobsicek

Hi all,
yesterday I began to dive to linux printing, and I feel
a bit lost in it.
I need help.

First I've inslalled samba* and cups* debs to my woody box.
I tried to share some folders with samba and it worked fine.

Then I read docs on cups.org and did
elfie:/home/elf# lpinfo -v
network socket
network http
network ipp
network lpd
direct parallel:/dev/lp0
serial serial:/dev/ttyS0?baud=115200
serial serial:/dev/ttyS1?baud=115200
serial serial:/dev/ttyS2?baud=115200
serial serial:/dev/ttyS3?baud=115200
network smb

well, my printer Epson LQ 100+ ESC/P2 is found on /dev/lp0

then

/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p EpsonLQ -E -v parallel:/dev/lp0 -m epson24.ppd

ok, passed
lpr sometextfile.txt

whouu, it's printing, but the resolution is terrible.
Wanted to edit some config, but I cant find any. Where are
stored information about my printer??? Which file I have to edit?

Then I tried gtkpl, great, I can set good resolution, but it's applied
only on files printed just from gtkpl. How can I solve this?

Finaly, on cups.org i find how to make cups and samba work together.
I added this lines to my smb.conf

printing = cups
printcap name = cups
load printers = yes

I ran testparm, it passed (log is attached)
I tried smbclient

elfie:/home/elf# smbclient -U% -L localhost
added interface ip=147.32.115.100 bcast=147.32.115.127 nmask=255.255.255.224
Domain=[ELFNET] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.2.2debian-2]

IPC$ IPC IPC Service (elfie server (Samba

Yes, that's the Holy Grail. Unfortunately, there are Deep Library Conflicts that keep it from being installed on Woody.

Since I want to keep a pure .deb system, Sylpheed it is...

I've installed evolution to woody, without any problems ...
just downloaded about 5 new versions of lib packages from sid
and all passed well ...

ext2 - reiserfs

2002-01-10 Thread Mirek Dobsicek

Hi,

I've backuped my /var which is on /dev/hda5 (ext2)
then
init 1
umount /dev/hda5
mkfs -t reiserfs /dev/hda5
mount /dev/hda5 /var
cp /backup /var
reboot

During booting I got message that Invalid super blok on /dev/hda5
(ex2fs). Try run fsck ..

and it sent me to 1 runlevel.

I was curious where it takes that /dev/hda5 is still ext2
so I looked into /dev/mtab

and there was only line for /dev/hda1 / .
and proc /proc

I was thinking that someting terrible has happend to my /etc/mtab ...

I converted, back my /dev/hda5 to ext2fs and copied /backup to it,
and reboot.

Luckily, it booted well, without any mistake. My box was good working again.
I looked into /etc/mtab and it was OK again:

/dev/hda1 / reiserfs rw,notail,notail 0 0
proc /proc proc rw 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,gid=5,mode=620 0 0
/dev/hda6 /tmp reiserfs rw,notail 0 0
/dev/hda7 /home reiserfs rw,notail 0 0
/dev/hda5 /var ext2 rw 0 0

I have 2 questions:
I was thinking that /etc/mtab is a fixed file ... but it looks it is
beeing written during starting the system

What I need to do, to succesfully convert my /dev/hda5 reiserfs,
which file need by informed about that change?

Sincerely, Mirek Dobsicek

(I'm running woody)

Re: partition resize

2002-01-09 Thread Mirek Dobsicek

As far, as I know, parted works only on ext2fs

and I need to make one of my reiserfs partition smaller
in order to make /var bigger

Mirek

Yes you can,

You can try good old partition-magic (commercial product), or GNU parted

apt-get install parted (on sid at least)
or see
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/parted.html

You can also download a bootable disk image from their site.

Make sure to backup the partitions before trying to resize them.

partition resize

2002-01-08 Thread Mirek Dobsicek

Hi all,
i have woody box with reiserfs
i made some mount points as

/usr
/home
/boot
/temp
/var

all mount points are on reiser, only /var is on ext2fs, because
this partition is just 100mb, and reiser refused to make such small
partition.

This time I have problem, that 100mb on /var is not enought :-(
How can I solve this?
Is it possible to resize partitions?
Or the soution can be to make a big file, with file system on it
and mount this file to /var/something ...

What video output driver are you using? mplayer -vo sdl -fs
yourfile.ext should work if you compiled sdl in properly. As a start,
try mplayer -fs -vo x11 yourfile.ext to see if that even works.

Hello,

I have some ult1mo(iso8859-2) type 1 fonts installed in lieu of those
provided by abiword-0.7.7-1*.deb. I have set XkbKeymap to
xfree86(us_cz_qwertz). Well, when I try to use accented chars of the
Czech alphabet it crashes on me complaining as thus..
/usr/bin/abiword: line 40: 1019 Segmentation fault $DYNAMIC_BIN $1

$2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7 $8 $9

The very same font works normally in other apps making use of xfs.
All I can manage is to type using dead keys, which randomly produces
good results, sometimes it crashes too with the message as above.
Dead keys: CARON and ACUTE works, RING does not.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?
Thanx in advance.

good book

Hi,
I'm about to buy the book Professional Linux Programming -- by Neil
Matthew and Richard Stones.

I'd like to learn programming under linux (some basic skills I
already have) and then develop Gnome (oaf) application.

But the Gnome is now going to its version 2, so is this
book good choice? Should I wait for revised version
or start learning with it, and hope that changes in version 2
will not be big?

Just C/C++

I usually mix them together. For GUI is more suitable C++
and I'm used to write my action rutines in C

ps: maybe I need to get rid of this bad habbit of mixing

Use ssh X forwarding, i.e. 'ssh -X remote-location'. Then it just works.

Does each user have a login on the linux server? Furthermore, does each
user have a listing in the smbpasswd file? smbpasswd -a username will
initialize each user that you want to be able to access with security =
user. It's worked great for me with both win95/98 and NT clients like
 this.
