downloading packages
Hi, A friend of mine would like to install debian at his home computer, but he dont want to bother with all 7 CDs. He would like to burn one CD with base system and desired packages and at home install from this CD. My question is how can he easily download wanted packages with dependencies... . He is running FreeBSD, so tools like apt-get -download only are not for him. Mirek Dobsicek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? debian on old notebook
Hi all, I have few question. Most of time I'm at college and twice a months I go home for a weekend. I dont have computer at home, and sometimes I need to continue at my work (coding and writing articles in VIM). I'd like to buy some old notebook and install Debian on in. Right now I can buy i486 at 66Mhz, 8MB RAM, 500MB HDD for $10 US dolars. Is it good idea to try install Debian on it? Is it possible with 8MB of RAM? I need it just for VIM writting, man pages displaying, and Lynx offline browsing. What could be the way to install Debian? I'm thinking that easist way is to connect notebook with my computer with parallel cable and install from internet. Or should I forget it and save $10? Please share your opinion, sincerely Mirek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: debian on old notebook
Or should I forget it and save $10? ooop, mistake, right prize is $100 You will find the machine extremely slow, compiling anything will take forever. Kernel compiles in about a day on one of those. Sure you won't be doing it, but I just wanted to show you the whole situation. If you can spend enough to get a low end pentium you would be a lot happier. Right now this notebook luckly run W95(really good usable), so I hope it can run few consoles at good speed. Mirek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I've found the autofs documentation to be a bit hard to follow also, but I did eventually figure it out. You can't have a mount point of /, so use something convenient like /mnt, however, you can then set up a symlink so that it looks like it's at /. Try this: In /etc/auto.master /mnt/etc/auto.mnt --timeout=5 In /etc/auto.mnt floppy -fstype=auto,sync :/dev/fd0 Then: ln -s /mnt/floppy /floppy Then whenever you try to access /floppy it will automatically mount /dev/fd0 on /mnt/floppy, but because of the symlink you can access it as /floppy. After 5 seconds of not trying to access /floppy (and not being in the directory in any shell) it will unmount it. The big confusion came to me because there are actually 2 man pages for autofs, and the default one doesn't really explain the format of the files. Try man 5 autofs. Make sure to backup the partitions before trying to resize them.

Re: accented chars in abiword
Hi, I used biznet(iso8859-2) type 1 fonts it does not crash for me, but accented char are bad displayed. It looks, that AbiWord handle bad accented chars ... Elf Thomas Kral wrote: Hello, Has anyone tried typing accented chars using iso8859-2 type1 font in abiword0.7.7-1 stable? I have some ult1mo(iso8859-2) type 1 fonts installed in lieu of those provided by abiword-0.7.7-1*.deb. I have set XkbKeymap to xfree86(us_cz_qwertz). Well, when I try to use accented chars of the Czech alphabet it crashes on me complaining as thus.. /usr/bin/abiword: line 40: 1019 Segmentation fault $DYNAMIC_BIN $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7 $8 $9 The very same font works normally in other apps making use of xfs. All I can manage is to type using dead keys, which randomly produces good results, sometimes it crashes too with the message as above. Dead keys: CARON and ACUTE works, RING does not. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Thanx in advance.
good book
Hi, I'm about to buy the book Professional Linux Programming -- by Neil Matthew and Richard Stones. I'd like to learn programming under linux (some basic skills I already have) and then develop Gnome (oaf) application. But the Gnome is now going to its version 2, so is this book good choice? Should I wait for revised version or start learning with it, and hope that changes in version 2 will not be big? Mirek Dobsicek
Re: good book
Just C/C++ I usually mix them together. For GUI is more suitable C++ and I'm used to write my action rutines in C Mirek Dobsicek ps: maybe I need to get rid of this bad habbit of mixing Preben Randhol wrote: Mirek Dobsicek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 04/12/2001 (19:04) : Hi, I'm about to buy the book Professional Linux Programming -- by Neil Matthew and Richard Stones.
