Lenny: which arch for a Intel Core 2 Duo?

2008-12-20 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,

my new notebook is an Acer AS5930G which uses an Intel Core 2 Duo cpu.

I should like to install the 64 bit version of Lenny.

Which is the correct arch for this processor?

Thanks
Mirto

P.S. from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/ I downloaded the

amd64 kde CD

But, during the installation all went wrong:

* normal graphic intall loops trying to detect the keyboard
* expert graphic install goes on until it reaches the disk
  partitioning, then freezes

Replying to myself:

There is a modificationo to do in the file /etc/default/snmpd -> temove
"127.0.0.1" from the SNMPDOPTS line.

Sloution found at:
http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-monitor-your-servers-with-snmp-and-cacti

Citation:

  1.2. Configuring SNMPD

The first thing we want to make sure is that snmpd is only going to wait
for connections on localhost. To do this, edit file /etc/default/snmpd
and make sure those values are set:

SNMPDRUN=yes
SNMPDOPTS='-Lsd -Lf /dev/null -u snmp -I -smux -p /var/run/snmpd.pid
127.0.0.1'

If you want your server to listen on all interfaces, remove the
/127.0.0.1/ bit.

This setting will make sure that the service will be started and that
the service is going to bind to localhost.

How to enable reading SNMP from the LAN in Lenny

2008-11-27 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,

I'm trying to setup a lan monitoring system (zenoss)
Trying to enable SNMP in Lenny, I'm able to query the snmpd daemon only
on localhost.

I tried to configure snmpd.conf file using the tutorial at
http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/snmp.htm
Then I tried the snmpconf utility.

I always get the same behaviour:

snmpwalk localhost -c public -v1 (works correctly and gives a lot of output)

snmpwalk 192.168.32.161 -c public -v1 (gives the error "Timeout: No
Response from 192.168.32.161")

The files /etc/hosts_allow and /etc/hosts_deny are empty

What can I do?

Lenny: configure ocsinventory fails

2008-09-26 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico

Hi all,
I'm trying to install and configure ocsinventory on a fresh lenny install.

First attempt failed because mysql is a requirement but it is not in the
dependencies.

Starting again from scratch, installing mysql, an then trying to install
ocs inventory seems to work: it asks for the administrative password of
mysql; asks for the password for ocsinventory; creates the "ocs" mysql
user and the ocsweb mysql schema.

But no tables are generated and using the URL
"http://localhost/ocsinventory"; gives a "Bad Request" error"

In the Apache2 log files I see an "Table 'ocsweb.config' doesn't exist"

Anyone was able to install and start ocs inventory?
There are postinstallation procedures to execute? (in the README.debian
there is nothing useful)

Thanks

Hi all,
the problem is in the 2.6.22 kernel.

I installed etch on an ESX 3.0 Vmware virlual machine (it uses 2.6.18
kernel) and all works fine.
Then I upgraded from etch to lenny (it uses 2.6.22 kernel) after the
reboot the hard disks are not recognized and the boot halts waiting for
root file system to be mounted.

If I start with the old kernel it works again.
I have to do dist-upgrade from time to time and throwing away new kernel
is annoying.

How can I solve this problem?

Thanks

Portable Debian?

Hi all,
I need to create a portable Debian (or derivate) system.

My needs are:

* install the system on a bootable USB HD
* install a system that autoconfigure on different hardware (I don't
know in advance which video card or lan card I'll find when I'll
  use the system)
* the system is mostly used for openoffice presentations and I
  prefer kde

I have to go around doing presentations and FOSS demonstrations.

Anyone have experience about this?
There is any Debian derivate that can be used? (Knoppix, Kanotix...)?
There is sonething like Mandriva Flash
(http://www.mandriva.com/en/linux/2007/node_3481) besd on debian?

Any help will be greately appreciated.

How to print on an HP Color Laserjet 2600n (ZJSream protocol)

Hi all.

I need to print on an HP Color Laserjet 2600n

I tried different drivers (the hp 2600n, the 2 generic zjstream drivers)

On this site http://foo2hp.rkkda.com/ it is explictly said to not use
the Debian drivers.

Anyone was able to print to this strange thing?

I'm a little confused.
In my mind, loading (or upgrading) firmware in a device mean writinig
into the device something.
When loaded or upgraded the firmware stays into the device also if you
power off and on again the device.

If this is correct, the sequence I used:
boot Etch: no wifi
boot Kubuntu: wifi works (so I suppose, if the firmware is needed
the firmware id loaded)
boot Etch: no wifi (and where has gone the firmware?)

should resolve any firmware problem

Can you explain more?

Well, I have a switch that doesn' t work well with negotiation. So I
added these MII lines in /etc/init.d/networking (in the start section):

==
start)
process_options
log_action_begin_msg "Configuring network interfaces"
if ifup -a; then
log_action_end_msg $?
else
log_action_end_msg $?
fi
/sbin/mii-tool -F 100BaseTx-HD eth0
/sbin/mii-tool -v eth0
;;
==

These have to be done for every network card (HD stays for Half Duplex,
you need FD - Full Duplex - see the mii-tool manual).
For me this works.

Well, in my /etc/init.d/ directory there is no such file.
A grep of shm in this directory says:
=
msb01:/etc/init.d# grep shm *
checkroot.sh: domount tmpfs shmfs /tmp \
mountdevsubfs.sh: # Mount a tmpfs on /dev/shm
mountdevsubfs.sh: domount tmpfs shmfs /dev/shm
-onoexec,nosuid,nodev$SHM_OPT
mtab.sh:# /dev/pts and /dev/shm.
mtab.sh:domtab tmpfs /dev/shm "devshm" $SHM_OPT
udev: if mountpoint -q /dev/shm/; then
udev:umount -n -l /dev/shm/
umountfs: /|/proc|/dev|/.dev|/dev/pts|/dev/shm|/proc/*|/sys)
umountnfs.sh: /|/proc|/dev|/dev/pts|/dev/shm|/proc/*|/sys)
msb01:/etc/init.d#

=

So, looking at mountdevsubfs.sh (there is no great comment inside) I see:
=
TMPFS_SIZE=
[ -f /etc/default/tmpfs ] && . /etc/default/tmpfs

KERNEL="$(uname -s)"

. /lib/lsb/init-functions
. /lib/init/mount-functions.sh

do_start () {
#
# Mount a tmpfs on /dev/shm
#
SHM_OPT=
[ "${SHM_SIZE:=$TMPFS_SIZE}" ] && SHM_OPT=",size=$SHM_SIZE"
domount tmpfs shmfs /dev/shm -onoexec,nosuid,nodev$SHM_OPT

=

Looking at /etc/default/tmpfs I find a file containing:
=
# SHM_SIZE sets the maximum size (in bytes) that the /dev/shm tmpfs can use.
# If this is not set then the size defaults to the value of TMPFS_SIZE
# if that is set; otherwise to the kernel's default.
#
# The size will be rounded down to a multiple of the page size, 4096 bytes.
SHM_SIZE=
=

That explains the size determination.

starting qemu: shm problem

2006-11-24 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,
I'm trying to star qemu but I have problems.

I'm using Etch and qemu 0.8.1-1

When I try to start I receive an error message stating that I have not
enough shared memory.

the mount command says:
devshm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)

If I do what qemu suggest:
umount /dev/shm
mount -t tmpfs -o size=144m none /dev/shm

the emulation starts correcty

Here my questions:

   1. is this the expected behaviour?
   2. where can I find documentation about shm device and temporary file
  systems?
   3. how can I change the shm device?

Thanks

Why not? Can you recommend this?
In the past I used Turtle firewall (
http://www.turtlefirewall.com/index.en.html ) - a wabmin module.
But in Debian webmin and its modules were abandoned because changing too
fast.
So I'm looking to a firewall that is known/ recommended/ supported by
the Debia community.

Which firewall?

2006-11-22 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,
I have to setup a firewall for a little network.
The firewall machine will have multiple ip addresses for a physical lan
card (eth0 eth0:1 eth0:2).

Looking to the packages (for Etch) I see some firewall; so there is the
question:
Can anyone recommend to use (or to avoid) any of the following?

fireflyer
fwbuilder
kmyfirewall
shorewall

Any information will be greately appreciated.

Etch and Kde PDF printer

2006-11-10 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,

I'm not able to use the virtual printers defined in Kde.

Going to the control center -> devices -> printers if I select the
predefined pdf printer and I click on the "print test page" button, I
obtain a CUPS error.

In my understanding the virtual printer should invoke ghostscript asking
for generating a file without calling the cups system.

How cai I setup a virtual printer generating a PDF file in Kde?

Thanks

How to PIN a package?

2006-10-13 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,
I had to downgrade openoffice to version 2.0.3.
Now I need to avoid that this package will b e upgraded again.

Following the manuals I put in apt files (in /etc/apt):

apt.conf:

APT::Authentication::TrustCDROM "true";
AcquireProxy "false";
APT::Default-Release "testing";

preferences:

Package: openoffice.org*
Pin: version 2.0.3*
Pin-Priority: 10001

But apt-get update; apt-get -s dist-upgrade tell me that apt still want
to upgrade openoffice to the 2.0.4~rc3-1 version.

What I'm doing wrong, or what is missing?

The error appears when I try to install GRUB in the mbr. I recevi the error:

Fatal error

I tried different snapshots of etch an one of this installs correctly on

Etch: OpenOffice 2.0.3 - Base: wizard don't work

2006-08-31 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
He all,
anyone have this problem?

In OO Base, when you try to add a form using the wizard, all seems to
work but when you click on the edn button nothin happens.
The only thing that is accepted is clicking the cancel button.

I tried the 2.0.3-2 from Etch and 2.0.3-6 from unstable (but in this
case the openoffice.org.java-common remains at 2.0.3-2)
I also tried different java, included the one from Sun.

Anyone knows how to solve this?

Thanks

Re: Installing Etch: how to select KDE instead of GNOME?

2006-08-23 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
First of all, thanks to you all.

I've tried "installgui acpi=off tasksel/first=kde-desktop"

The installation starts without complaining, but kde is not installed.
Searching with synaptic, there is no metapackage called kde-desktop.

I mispelled something?
There is any documentation about the booting parameters? (in the F1-F10
help screens there is nothing about tasksel)

Thanks
Mirto

Probably I'm not able to see the memory card mounted.
When I insert the memory card, I didn't see it not in mount, nor appears
an icon (as it does for usb pen drive)..

Etch doesn't see an usb camera

2006-07-31 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,
anyone experienced this problem?

Using Etch and a Canon s1 is (ptp prtotcol?) I am not able to access the
photo in the camera.

The camera is correctly detected as an usb device.
When I connect the camera a popup window (I'm using KDE) asks If I want
to open the camera as a folder or with digikam.
Digikam is not able to autodetect the camera. Forcing the model (tried
normal protocol and ptp) the progam says: "cannot access the mamera":
Trying to open the camera with Konqueror I see a page with the address
"media:/camera" containing a folder called "camera"; clicking on the
folder I see the same page but with the address "media:/camera/camera"
(a new /camera for every click).

Any hint?

Thanks

The line was only in /etc/cups/cups.d/ports.conf

Now it works again

Problems with Kdeprint and Cups

2006-06-26 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,
I have a debian Etch installed from scratch and I'm experiencing
problems when printing.

I'm using:
KDM window manager
cupsys 1.2.1-2
kdeprint 4.3.5.3-2

Kdeprint refuse to use cups as printing system saying that he cannot
retrieve the printer's list.

Some applications (firefox, openoffice) don't print and see only a
"generic printer" instead of the printer's list.

Any hint?

Thanks

Open Office 2: where can I find italian hypenation pakage?

2006-06-15 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,
sorry for cross-posting, but I don't know which is the right list.

I need to use the italian localized version of oo2 on a Debian Etch
distribution

In the Debian testing (also in unstable) I have:

openoffice.org.I10n.it (2.0.1-5) wich gives me the italian user
interface
openoffice.org-thesaurus-it the italian thesaurus
myspell.it that seems to be used as the italian spellchecker
missing openoffice.org-hypenation.it (I have only German Hungarian
and Lithuaian) so no hypenation

Where can I find the missing hypenation package?

There is any recommended place/repository for italian localization of
openoffice?

Thanks

Introducing myself and ATI+Toshiba problem

2006-02-20 Thread Mirto Silvio Busico
Hi all,

I'm an ICT Consultant in Rome (Italy)
I'm just switching to Debian (etch) from a commercial Linux distribution.

Normally my customers use a commercial Linux distribution and are prone
to religious wars about the distribution to use.
So I decided to use a distribution that is not commercial at all, in
order to propose/show prototypes that are commercial (marketing?) neutral.

I've installed etch on my Toshiba Satellite P20 (with an ATI graphic
card), and now I'm triyng to put at work the hardware components.

I've a lot of problems, but I'll start a new tread for the not working
components. Here only a question:

How can I use the external monitor? (it seems that the standard X
configuration is not good). It is only a configuration problem, or there
is something to do in order to enable the secondary monitor?

BTW the fnfxd package says that the kernel lacks the Toshiba support.

There is any documentation about this issue?
Any help will be greately appreciated.

Regards
Mirto
