Thinkpad R40e can't boot Debian 9.0.0 netinst image without acpi=off
Hi, I wanted to file a bug report, but I don't know which package the issue belongs to. The computer is a IBM Thinkpad R40e. Currently Debian 8 is installed. Ever since Debian 8 was installed on the harddrive I had to add acpi=off to the kernel options, otherwise the computer does not boot. No other acpi/clock/irq option mentioned on Internet works. Blacklisting the acpi_cpufreq or any other acpi* module does not fix the issue. The Debian 8 live CD image used to install the system does not have the issue. The previous OS was Debian 7 Wheezy and it did not have the issue. Now I'm trying to upgrade to Debian 9 by reinstalling the system from scratch. I've downloaded the debian 9.0.0 netinst install. The netinst image is copied with command dd to an USB key. The computer boots on the key and the first menu appears. I select "Graphical Install". The light on the USB key blinks a few minutes. After a while, the screen goes black with a static(=not blinking) text cursor in the corner. No disk, USB or other activity visible. No reaction to Ctrl+Alt+DEL or any keypress. The computer is stuck in that state and only a poweroff (hold powerbutton 4 sec) does work. Pressing TAB in the menu when "Graphical Install" is highlighted and adding acpi=off to the kernel options does prevent the lock and allows the graphical installer to start. I repeated the same steps with the Debian 8.6.0 netinst image and the issue is not present (at least not until Debian is installed on the hard drive). I guess there was some change in kernel config after the Debian 8 live cd/netinst images were built. This change prevents the default kernel from booting on the Thinkpad R40e. This change is now part of the Debian 9.0.0 netinst image. -- Olivier F. R. Dierick o.dier...@piezo-forte.be

It does do the job. That said, the rtirq package for stretch does work as expected. I just saw that this is my *fault*. I've tried yesterday to rebuild this packaget and to follow Lintian advise : https://lintian.debian.org/tags/init.d-script-does-not-source-init-functions.html which gave the result up above. Just rebuilt it 5 minutes ago without the fix suggested by Lintian, and everything is back as normal. Olivier
rtirq status changes from Jessie to Stretch
Hi all, For a real-time audio context, I used to do a /etc/init.d/rtirq status which gave me something like with Jessie : PID CLS RTPRIO NI PRI %CPU STAT COMMAND 1296 FF 90 - 130 1.2 Sirq/16-snd_hda_ 1297 FF 90 - 130 0.0 Sirq/19-snd_hda_ ... I am not completely new to Debian but I never really understood the version-system. I understand the versions have nicknames (8 = jessie, 7 = wheezy, 6 = squeeze, ...). I also understand there are 3 releases of every version (stable, testing, unstable) and it is clear that stable has the oldest but most bugfree version of software and unstable the opposit. But it seems there is some living connection between the current testing and the future version... And what is "sid"? I downloades 8 testing (some months ago) and in my apt-sources is jessie. Would it be something else if I chose stable?? How can I see it in apt? Is there a better way to determine the release beside lsb_relsease? /etc/debian_version is pretty clear but only the verion is inside. But I've heard of "asound.rc" or maybe it is "asoundrc" (don't remember sorry), so you could hunt google for that, and Ubuntu/Debian, and compare the files between the two OSs. But you have NOT taken advantage of this to do more research yourself yet. Well, I did. I have not mentionned it (but maybe I should have) because I did not want to make my post even longer and because it should work without these files. I checked for existence of any "*asound*" files in my Ubuntu install: there is no. In debian, none either. So I thought that’s not somewhere to search further. The troubleshooting guide for alsa mentions that these files should not be used in a working install (see Warning here: http://alsa.opensrc.org/.asoundrc): "If your system won't work without [these files], and you are running the most current version of ALSA, you probably should file a bug report." What you didn't quote is the first sentence of the warning: "Neither .asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf is normally required." 'Normally' here means (and I know this for certain) 'having a very uncomplicated system'. It means one and only one sound device, and I suspect that even then, it means on-board sound or a SoundBlaster. My server had on-board sound, which usually got designated 'card0', and I used an external USB device, usually 'card1'. This most certainly did require a configuration file. I would expect your computer to have at least two sound devices, and if the HDMI one is being identified as something other than card0, you will need to specify what device you actually use. Note that a different OS running on the same hardware may designate sound devices differently, and indeed my old server would sometimes reverse the card order after a reboot, just to give me something to do. As you guessed, I have two cards producing audio, one is the typical sound card (SB I don’t know what) and one is my video card, producing sound through HDMI. The tests I did (see bottom of the original post) direct sound to a specific card, so order of the cards should not matter. Thanks for your informations. I understand better why I did not get answers. FYI, someone (off-list) also suggested playing with amixer contents, amixer cset and the like, which I didn’t know so it might be helpful for another reader. But no luck for me, I didn’t find any setting to activate using this. I won’t clutter the list with individual answers, so let me thank here also Zenaan, Chris, Rob. I will have a look at all these suggestions (though I have already made various checks in these directions so I do not have much hope). If this does not solve the problem, I might try once again to ask the question (after careful re-writing considering the various remarks I got), or I might file a bug report as suggested on alsa website and as some of you suggested. But I am reluctant to file a bug report before being reasonably sure that it’s not something I did not configure correctly. Okay, I could have made it more explicit. I meant that when I try "aplay" command line utility, it does not give an error message on the line. I assume that it would say so (on sysout or syserr, thus visible in the terminal) if it detected an error, as it seems to be designed for testing, and since the troubleshooting guide does not mention to look for anywhere else for error messages. I checked for existence of any "*asound*" files in my Ubuntu install: there is no. In debian, none either. So I thought that’s not somewhere to search further. The troubleshooting guide for alsa mentions that these files should not be used in a working install (see Warning here: http://alsa.opensrc.org/.asoundrc): "If your system won't work without [these files], and you are running the most current version of ALSA, you probably should file a bug report." * When you have an apparent known pathway for helping yourself, and you have not taken it, that should be taken by you first. * If you do not know what to look for, and are unwilling to google it, you could ask the question, eg "Can someone please advise which files I can compare, between the Ubuntu and Debian, s
A question about how to ask a question
Hi list, My question is about... how to best ask a question! That is because I have the feeling I am not asking it in the best possible way. I have a problem with my sound setup. I tried many different things, to no avail, so I thought I would ask for help on an appropriate mailing list. I have done my best to follow the usual advices: explain the problem clearly, give details about your setup, say what you tried and why it does not work, and so on. Yet, I asked the question on alsa-user mailing list (see http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.user/37173) and later on this list (see http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2013/02/msg00856.html), and got no answer. Let me make it clear: I do not expect that every single question will receive a complete and satisfactory answer. I know this is open source, people answer if they want to and have time. I do not blame anybody for not answering me. But still, I am a bit surprised that not a single reader on these two lists had a single idea to help me, get me somehow on the path, perhaps simply by suggesting something I could try or some documentation I could read. Therefore, I am wondering if my question is perhaps somehow incorrectly phrased, or incomplete? So, the object of this very post is not to ask the question about my sound setup again, but rather to ask your opinion about why I did not get any answer, and if I could do something (like phrasing it differently, or adding or removing details) to improve my chances to get an answer. Or perhaps I should ask the question on a different mailing-list? The original question follows. Thanks. Olivier Original question: Hi list, My graphic card is connected through HDMI to my screen. From aplay -L, AFAIU, alsa recognises three cards, namely default (plays to pulseaudio), some ATI SB card and my Radeon card that I want to make work. When I play to the Radeon card (using aplay -vv -D "plug:'hdmi:CARD=Generic,DEV=0'") I hear no sound, though everything seems to work. When I play to the other sound card ("sysdefault:CARD=SB"), connected to analog headphones, it works. After some long testing, I found that the best way is not a product that claim to do everything. So postfix + dovecot + davical + nginx does the job perfectly and are easier to support and configure. Globally, maybe it seems quite complicated to maintain several products to build one solution but finally, dividing the task gives flexibility, stability and a better mastering of the code. can't get virsh shutdown (kvm) working with ACPI, ACPI events not detected
Hi, I have a Debian (testing) virtual image above KVM, but I can't get the shutdown event work. I installed in my virtual image acpi-support (and acpi) packages to get acpi support and I tried to load the button kernel module (as it seems shutdown event maps to button event). Upload php high Cpu
Hi, I have an issue with the tool openupload, which is a php tool to upload files http://openupload.sourceforge.net/. My apache server is on a wheezy, which is hosted on a vserver (fs reiserfs) inside a squeeze, which is also hosted on vmware esx which has on core and 2 go of ram. Each times I upload a file, the apache process take 99% of the cpu, nothing particular in the apache logs, even in debug. I tried with squeeze and wheezy but no luck, same result with apache 2.2.16 and 2.2.21. So I went to php.ini and verify the points : max_execution_time = 60 max_input_time = 60 memory_limit = 128M I've been in contact with the developers, no clue. Anyone can help us on this ? Clearly, I will suggest you Debian. Opensuse is great, really, but use rpm (AFAIK) and package and application managing can be a nightmare. Globally to choose a first linux distribution, don't rely on the gui or the screenshot you'll finds on the net. Rely on the work done by the packagers and developers. Debian is solid, user friendly (when you admit the power of bash :), I know that's hard when comes from Window$). Feel free to install a debian squeeze and use it, smash it and use internet resources, you'll find a lots of help here and on the web. So yes I'll recommend debian, you won't regret it, when console will not afraid you :) Because debian (Linux ?) unleash is power in shell, gui is just an option. Critical Xen bug on Debian Squeeze, suspecting package xen-hypervisor-4.0-amd64
Hi, First, I will explain quickly the problem : on updated version Squeeze, I can't boot **any** DomU's, it hangs. Two cases: 1) HVM DomU's : xm create sends a command to qemu, the parameter '-vcpu_avail'. But on newer version of qemu, parameters had changed (it's only 'vcpu_avail'): so HVM domain cannot be started. Here is the error line : /usr/lib/xen/bin/qemu-dm: invalid option -- '-vcpu_avail' 2) Others DomU's (include pvops domains ! so not it's not the kernel): they freeze at startup, with cpu @ 100%. No specific logs, no errors reported, just only "r" status on xm list and no boot with cpu at max. Then, in my case, it's obvious these are regression on squeeze. Why ? Because on my 3 dom0's, only 2 of them are updated. And the "old" one works *perfectly*, both for HVM and Pvops DomU's. Dom0 are similar (same hardware, dell 2970 with opteron 2423 HE) On old working Dom0 : $ aptitude show xen-hypervisor-4.0-amd64 Version : 4.0.1-1 $ aptitude show qemu-system Paquet : qemu-system Version : 0.12.5+dfsg-2 - On updated Dom0's : $ aptitude show xen-hypervisor-4.0-amd64 Version : 4.0.1-2 $ aptitude show qemu-system Version : 0.12.5+dfsg-3 I know this report is "general", so if you want further details, I'llbe ready to do some tests today. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". No, but I think your best bet is to switch your window manager which you ruled out in your first post. And then I don't know of a window manager that satisfies your point 1 (re-arranging of windows on taskbar). I only remember some freeware for Windows that allowed that. I would still use it at work if it didn't make explorer.exe crash. :) But while I like the idea when running Windows, I absolutely have no need to re-arrange taskbar entries when running Linux. I guess the reason is that every window manager for Linux has virtual desktops (and maybe that I have more open windows at work). :) J. Mh, that's an interesting commentary. Maybe I should change the way I manage my windows and desktops. It is very surprising IMHO that I am the only one who wants to do that. Re: Manage window: change positions, etc.
Hello, I posted this message one week ago but did not receive advices. Does anybody know an other place where I could ask the question? Or is it incorrectly framed? Do you think it is worth re-posting it in a new thread? (I don't want to spam the list, but I have the feeling that the question must have an answer because it seems a common task other users must want to achieve...) If no software exist to solve my problem, I am ready to program one if it is simple enough ; and provided someone would kindly point me in the right direction. For the record, my DE is Gnome. Any advice would be appreciated. Olivier Olivier Cailloux a écrit : Hi all, I would like to do automate two related tasks on my debian box (stable), preferably without changing my window manager (because I am happy with it and would prefer a simple solution if available). 1) Change the task bar position of some windows. I use a software (namely, eclipse) which creates when started several windows. These windows appear on the task bar on an order depending on when the windows are created. I would like them to be automatically placed where I like them to be. I have a preferred ordering in which I like to see my windows on the task bar and currently as it is not automated I have to manually change these windows positions on the task bar each time I start the software. 2) Make some windows appear on a specific desktop. When starting a software (i.e., eclipse again), I would like to tell it to always create his new windows on the desktop number 2. Note that the new windows are all created at the software start (I don't create any new windows afterwards) and as it takes a long time to start I am usually working on a different desktop when it decides to create some windows. Currently, to implement point 2 (or rather overcome the problem), I use devil's pie [http://burtonini.com/blog/computers/devilspie]. I configured it to *move* the windows containing the application's name to desktop 2 as soon as they appear. But it is not really satisfying: - the windows appear on my current working desktop before being moved to desktop 2. It makes the screen flickers. The screen flickers once per created window, thereby giving a very bad feel. I would prefer not being bothered by the software starting while I work on desktop 1 and find out only when I later switch to desktop 2 that the application is started with all its windows being waiting for me. - it does not work well: frequently the last window or several ones still appear on the desktop I am currently working as long as I don't click their icon, and only then are moved. - it must be running as a daemon (currently I set it up to start when I log in) although I only need it when I start the software (this is a minor problem but I mention it anyway). Also devil's pie do not (AFAIK) solve point 1. I know that I will probably not find a perfect solution (having none of the mentioned drawbacks), and would thereby be interested by every suggestions you could give me that would lead me to a better state than the one I am currently in. E.g. if you think that the best solution in my situation would be to drop my WM, please tell it as well. (BTW how can I know which WM I am using?) Manage window: change positions, etc.
Hi all, I would like to do automate two related tasks on my debian box (stable), preferably without changing my window manager (because I am happy with it and would prefer a simple solution if available). [SOLVED] Archos 3 vision + debian 2.6.30-2-686+usbmount
Dear all, A short report on my use of the Archos 3 vision. I used the webpage: http://www.linux-usb.org/FAQ.html#ts6 In my case, it seems the power supply was somewhat faulty, so I got an external usb (2) hub with an independant power plug (which I plugged on my usb2 port). What happens then? -- It seems the device loads first, so you get a battery on your archos screen. It is not mounted. -- Once this is achieved, you get the usual screen. The device is still not mounted. -- Wait, wait, and be patient, for I finally got the plugged icone (black/grey/white with three horizontal lines, like a three thronged tuning fork) This time an icon appears and life is made:) A last problem. According to /etc/mtab, the device gets mounted with vfat rw,noexec, nodev, sync, noatime, nodiratime and only root can unmount it. So I tried to add /dev/sdb /home/Me/Archos3 vfat rw,noexec, nodev, sync, noatime, nodiratime, user, 0 0 to /etc/fstab and redo and all (I didn't restart the kernel though). But Me still cannot unmount the beast :) Well, root can and that's enough for me :) Best, Amities, Olivier -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Archos 3 vision + debian 2.6.30-2-686 +usbmount: unsuccessful
Dear all, About tests: (1) I plugged the archos device on an old windows (vista) computer and it worked, I copied some files and it plays music. This satisfies me from another aspect: I was afraid the usb plugs had evolved, but both these computers have about the same age. (2) I plugged a usb key on both my usb2 ports and it works. Well, this key would work also with usb 1, so it is a suboptimal test. (3) I tried to help my system by adding an entry in /etc/fstab and creating the corresponding mount point (/media/Archos3) --- All to no avail, though things seem to be a bit clearer. [...] USB ports are deep dependant (let's say "sensible") on power supply and voltages. Is not uncommon that usb ports get very easily damaged by non- filtered spikes and after blackouts if the computer is not properly protected (i.e., if the user has no UPS unit). I guess my powering system is not very stable. Sometimes my fan even does not start without my giving it a shove. I have a "Sensing sensors limits: failed" at start. I still get this -71 error around "address 3": --- [ 286.012023] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3 [ 286.353230] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=071b, idProduct=3203 [ 286.353236] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [ 286.353240] usb 1-1: Product: Archos3 [ 286.353243] usb 1-1: Manufacturer: ARCHOS [ 286.353245] usb 1-1: SerialNumber: USBV1.00 [ 286.353360] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 286.354645] hub 1-0:1.0: over-current change on port 5 [ 286.425060] Initializing USB Mass Storage driver... libdvdcss availability?
Dear list, Please excuse me if this question would be more appropriately asked in an other list, and indicate me the right one... I would like to install the libdvdcss package, which appears on http://www.debian-unofficial.org/packages.html. There is a note on debian unofficial homepage about inclusion of lenny packages ("soon, but not quite yet"). I am indeed running lenny, but I am ready to install the sid package if need be (I tend to prefer sticking to the debian packaging system than to compile things myself, when possible). libdvdcss seems to be available for sid, as reported on the above-mentioned page. However, I can't install that package. I have added the required lines in sources.list: deb http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian stable main contrib non-free restricted deb http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian testing main contrib non-free restricted deb http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free restricted Then I get a missing key error: -- #LANG=C aptitude update W: GPG error: http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org stable Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 394D199524C52AC3 -- (and similarly for testing and unstable). I tried the debian-unofficial faq suggestions, but they fail with an error message or do not solve the problem: -- #LANG=C aptitude install debian-unofficial-archive-keyring Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched "debian-unofficial-archive-keyring" -- (indeed there is no such package, according to debian package search [http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=keyring]). Then installing libdvdcss does not work: -- #LANG=C aptitude install libdvdcss (snip) No candidate version found for libdvdcss (snip) #LANG=C aptitude install libdvdcss/unstable (snip) Unable to find an archive "unstable" for the package "libdvdcss" (snip) -- This thread might be related to the problem, but I don't read German [http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-german/2009/06/msg00105.html]. So the questions are: - Is the fact that aptitude do not see the libdvdcss package related to the missing key problem? - How can I solve the missing key problem? - Is debian-unofficial not maintained any more (or currently down), as would indicate the note on the website home page and the fact that it suggests to install an apparently non-existing package for the keyring? In that case, any idea when it will be up again? (I can wait for my libdvdcss installation, it is not urgent, but I would like to know if waiting is hopeless.) - How can I install libdvdcss on my system? (Preferably through aptitude, although if not possible advices on how to do it differently would be appreciated.) Thank you for any help or pointer. Hi to all, I have a small problem with my display under Debian (woody). My X server is 4.1, but as I installed from vanilla I am still running on a 2.2 kernel. The computer is an old laptop with a trident 9385 chipset (2mb of ram). Everything goes fine except when I open some applications such as oowriter, galeon or showimg. When I do manipulation with one of these programs, some small ghost windows appears in the middle of the application. Actually, 3 to 4 little screenshots of my desktop are displayed in blue, pink and green pixels. Kind of "resonance" with distortion. Someone knows what might be the problem. Is it bad refresh rate, physical limitation from the card, need to upgrade kernel to 2.4 etc... I would really appreciate any guess. No faces in gdm browser
Hi everybody, I'm tring to configure gdm to show faces in the face browser. After trying to figure out why there are no faces, I discovered that gdm does not like zsh in /etc/passwd For example: toto:x:1004:1004:,,,:/home/toto:/bin/zsh tata:x:1005:1005:,,,:/home/tata:/bin/bash tata has a face but toto has not. If I change toto to have bash instead of zsh, the browser displays toto's face. I'm using: gdm 2.6.0.8-1 zsh 4.2.0-10 I activated debug mode but it didn't help me.
