Bizarre graphical glitch with Gnome3 on after last update on testing
Hoi, I pulled down yesterday kernel (4.8.5) and Gnome (3.22.1-> 3.22.2) upgrades, and since then I get graphical glitches when switch between screens. It is very difficult to make a screen-shot of them, sorry. The issue appeared after the reboot. I have a laptop with Intel Corporation Sky Lake Integrated Graphics and I have 2 external monitors connected to it. T Has anyone seen this? On my initial mail I made a mistake saying that I was running compiz. I am running compositing from KDE. Somehow I thought that I was running Compiz because I enabled the desktop effects from the KDE control settings. Don't ask me how I made that mistake:-) Modern hardware knows nothing about such software mixture. I mean, if we are referring to the hardware layer, your computer can be able to run all those applications just fine but speaking purely about software, I fear to run just _one_ of the said components so imagine running all of them at a time... it has to be a complete headache for your system (KDE environment is now managed by kwin -which provides compositing- and you are also running Compiz -which provides compositing-, then you have added Cairo-dock -to enhance the desktop look feel- and all that is managed by a VGA card that is not very powerful - mid-range- with a backported kernel. I would considered myself lucky if my system can be started with all that. Currently I run the same setup, KDE with compositing and cairo-dock with opengl, but I have removed KDE integration of the libreoffice (removed libreoffice-kde package). So far not problems. I would try to disable compiz and see what happens. It could be cairo- dock or compiz (or a mix of a lot of other things, the soup has many ingredients...) the ones making the screen goes corrupted. If disabling compiz fixes the problem (the same as happens with GNOME) I would contact compiz at their forums or mailing lists. If I run compiz --replace I get a yellow screen and i have to reboot. I also see sometimes that the rendering is not working well. For instance when I issue alt-f1 to get the KDE menu the background of the menu is not white but has parts of the desktop image. Some screen corruptions is going and I believe is has to do with the driver. I was about to do that, but I said I want to find the solution of the problem rather to work around it. Disabling components will help you to find what is causing LO (it was just LO?) to render badly and you will be able to direct your report to the proper project/package to they can fix it or tell you what to tweak to make the error dissapear :-) I will continue the experiments and most likely I will contact kde+compiz teams. I also need to go through all the bug reports of the relevant apps to see if it is something already reported. thanks camaleon, pavlos -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: How to compile and install the kernel
2009/10/1 surreal firewal...@gmail.com: Thanks, I read that, compiled the kernel and its working. But now I have a problem. The kernel deb file gets installed, but it has got the same name ie Debian Kernel 2.6.26 in /boot/grub/menu.lst.. I want to have the customized kernel name as default, any way to do this? The following information from the article will help you To build the kernel you'll invoke make-kpkg, a script which automates and replaces the sequence make dep; make clean; make bzImage; make modules. Take a few minutes and read over the manual page for make-kpkg. The make-kpkg command line can be complex and at first intimidating. Its basic syntax is bash:/usr/src$ make-kpkg options target Your target will be kernel_image. Let's examine two of the more important and common options, --append-to-version and --revision. --append-to-version The first option lets you specify an addition to the kernel version, which then becomes part of the kernel's name. You may use alphanumeric characters, + and . (period or full stop); do not use underscore _. Here's the kernel I'm running now: bash:/usr/src$ /usr/src/$ uname -a Linux da5id 2.6.8.1-2-k7 #1 Sat Sep 18 11:23:11 BST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux You should avoid using --append-to-version values such as -686, -K7, and -sparc. They are commonly used for Debian pre-compiled kernels. Kernel modules live in subdirectories of /lib/modules; each kernel has its own subdirectory. Every time you install a kernel image with a new name, the package installer creates a new subdirectory of /lib/modules to hold its modules. This means that by using a new value for --append-to-version each time you build a kernel image, you can ensure that the new kernel will have a new name, and that its modules won't conflict with those of other kernels. /!\ If you install a kernel with the same name (the same version and --append-to-version) as an already-installed kernel, installing the new kernel package will overwrite the old kernel and its modules. You will be warned and offered the chance to abort. Take it. Use another value for --append-to-version and rebuild. --revision Another make-kpkg option is --revision, which affects the name of the Debian package itself but not the kernel name. As with --append-to-version, you may use only alphanumeric characters, + and .. Do not use underscores _. If you do not supply a value for --revision, make-kpkg will use 10.00.Custom. Using different values of --revision will not prevent conflicts between kernels with the same name. They are just for you to see the difference, for example recompiling the same kernel with a very small change. Kernel package names Debian kernel-image file names have the form kernel-image-(kernel-version)(--append-to-version)_(--revision)_(architecture).deb The package name is everything before the first underscore. bash:/usr/src$ ls kernel-image-2.6.8.1.181004_10.00.Custom_i386.deb Now you can see why underscores are not allowed in make-kpkg options ? they separate the elements of package names. I recommend using a different --append-to-version value for each kernel you compile, and letting make-kpkg assign the default revision. Date-based values work for me, but you are free to invent your own scheme. {i} Please read /usr/share/doc/kernel-package/README.gz if --append-to-version or --revision is unclear, or if you plan on using options different from the ones I suggest. (One way to do this is zless README.gz.) Ignore the discussions of flavours and epochs until you are more familiar with make-kpkg and with Debian packages generally; they are not likely to be useful to you now. fakeroot -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. upgrade to lenny report
Hi all, This morning I upgraded my etch desktop to lenny. All went ok but with 3 small issues. 1) Exim was refusing to start up due to no zero size on the paniclog file. The file was reporting a configuration error on specific line, but not on the config file that I use. Removing the lines from the paniclog made the exim4 to be started again 2) X couldn't be start up due to a missing nv driver. xserver-xorg-video-nv was not installed during the upgrade. I need to check the upgrade log to find out why, I use script for capturing the upgrade. Installing that package and restarting gdm solved the problem. 3) The gdm login screen is a bit more left that it should be. I don't have that issue inside Gnome. I haven't managed to solve that one. I use fb driver during boot in order to have 1280x1024 resolution at console. When I configured fb.modes file (1 year ago), I hacked a bit the 1280x1024-60 mode because the screen was a bit to left. Inside Gnome I have 1280x1024 at 75. Since the problem at GDM login screen matched the problem at the console, I thought that I could change the boot line at grub to use video=nvidiafb:1280x1...@75. But, after the boot fbset -s says 1280x1024-60 and GDM login screen is still a bit to left. I could change the setting on my monitor (Sony SDM-HS75P), but that would break the console screen and the screen inside Gnome, which they are fine. Nevertheless, I am happy that I have the same setup 5 years now :-) Cheers, Pavlos -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? logcheck bug in pattern matching for su
Hi, Before I file a bug report I would like to verify with you guys that I have found a bug. As the subject suggests there is an issue with the pattern matching for su in this file # cat /etc/logcheck/violations.d/su ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: \(pam_[[:alnum:]]+\) .*$ ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: .*$ ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: \+ pts/[0-9]+ [[:alnum:]]+-root$ ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: \+ \?\?\? root-[[:alnum:]]+$ the issue resides in 3rd and 4th line, the - character should be : for matching user:root and root:user strings. Here are the proofs Running the 3rd line which gives no matches # egrep '^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: \+ pts/[0-9]+ [[:alnum:]]+-root$' /var/log/auth.log Running again the 3rd line but changing the - character to : # egrep '^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: \+ pts/[0-9]+ [[:alnum:]]+:root$' /var/log/auth.log Jul 21 09:27:36 hraklhs su[4313]: + pts/0 pparissis:root Jul 21 10:32:48 hraklhs su[5244]: + pts/1 pparissis:root Running the 4th line which gives no matches # egrep '^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: \+ \?\?\? root-[[:alnum:]]+$' /var/log/auth.log Running again the 4th line but changing the - character to : # egrep '^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: \+ \?\?\? root:[[:alnum:]]+$' /var/log/auth.log Jul 20 07:40:01 hraklhs su[11619]: + ??? root:nobody Jul 21 07:35:01 hraklhs su[23294]: + ??? root:nobody Jul 21 07:35:01 hraklhs su[23298]: + ??? root:nobody Jul 21 07:35:01 hraklhs su[23303]: + ??? root:nobody There are 2 possible solutions for this issue 1) fix the 2 lines on /etc/logcheck/violations.d/su 2) comment the following line on /etc/logcheck/violations.ignore.d/logcheck-su ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: (\+|-) (pts/[0-9]{1,2}|tty[0-9]) [_[:alnum:]-]+:[_[:alnum:]-]+$ The first solution fixes the bug and the second is a hack. xdm source .bash_profile
Hello all, I have been trying to make my X to source the .bash_profile in order to set my $PATH variable. Looking around Debian reference document and googling about it, the trick was to add in my ~/.bashrc the $PATH and export it. Since ~/.bashrc is invoked by no login shell I don't really mind to use this trick. But, I do mind that fact that I have duplicate information, $PATH is set in two files. Thus, I was trying to fine a way to overcome this and use only the ~/.bash_profile by creating a executable file with name ~/.xession and put in that file only . ~/.bash_profile. This didn't work and I tried to put #!/bin/bash --login at the beginning of the file but it didn't work either. Any idea where should I look to get this done? For example, my .xsession file looks like this: #!/bin/bash # start my X session if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then . ~/.bashrc fi xrdb -merge .Xdefaults ssh-agent gnome-session This starts gnome, and runs it from ssh-agent. That's a neat trick which makes your ssh agent accessible to all xterms started from within your X session. If you use KDE, replace that with startkde. Side effect of that approach is that you have to use only one Desktop Environment. I was trying to avoid to set my Desktop Environment from ~/.xsession because I like the option to change the D.E. from the xdm/gdm/kdm when I login. Thus, I didn't follow this approach which is documented in Debian reference. It seams that I have to take this path anyways. The key is, once this script ends, so does your X session. If you just source your .bashrc file, your X session will end before it has a chance to start. ;-) That's explain why it was not working for me the trick to just source the ~/.bash_profile from ~/.xsession without starting a window manager/D.E.. Since ~/.bashrc is invoked by no login shell I don't really mind to use this trick. But, I do mind that fact that I have duplicate information, $PATH is set in two files. The usual way to handle this is to put environment initialization commands only in .bashrc, and source .bashrc from .profile (or .bash_profile). Note that you don't want to put commands which generate output in .bashrc -- if you do this, it can cause problems for your ssh sessions (particularly using scp, etc.) which will receive the output of the .bashrc script, and corrupt the data stream. To counteract that problem, only put commands which generate output in .profile (or .bash_profile). It sounds a good a idea and practice to move my environment variables to ~/.bashrc. You need to copy the 'authorized_keys' file from the ssh directory of the root (/root/.ssh/) to the user ssh directory(~/.ssh) and then make sure that the file is owned by that user and the permissions are 600. From security point of view you shouldn't use the same public key to access the system as root and as user. But that takes down to your preference. Furthermore, send us the sshd_config of the server and /etc/ssh/ssh_config , the ~.ssh/config from the system which are you using the ssh. If the id_rsa.pub is the public key then diff authorized_keys id_rsa.pub should return nothing. But you said that in the remote system you have copied all the files under /root/.ssh to /home/user/.ssh. which means the remote server has the right public key information for the user. do a ls -ld on /home/user/.ssh /home/user and see if it is world-writable. what about the above? If it is then you have two options a) make to be no-world-writable b) make sure the on sshd_config of the remote system you have StrictModes no, you shouldn't do that OK we checked that on remote system every thing is in place, let's go on the host you use ssh. are sure that you are using the right private key? when you access the remote system as a root do you specify the identity/private key using ssh -i id_rsa? how do you use the ssh cmd in both cases? Re: software RAID
Hi, Since we are talking about RAID I would like to ask ,how can I remove a raid 1 device. I had one md5 device which was a RAID-1 with 2 slices from 2 disks. I removed the one slice from md5 as it it described in the manual but I don't how I can remove the md5 device. Do I need to remove the /dev/md5 by my self? and then remove the Linux raid autodetect from the slice of the 2 disk? thanks, Pavlos -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: X problem as root
Hello, You have to export the variable XAUTHORITY before invoke su export XAUTHORITY=~/.Xauthority su do not use the '-' in su command because this invoke the shell which read the .profile files and over write you XAUTHORITY variable. You will find a sample .bash_profile under /usr/share/docs/bash I hope it helped Pavlos Αρχικό μήνυμα από Marco Calviani [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi everybody, i've got a problem whenever i become root and try to open a window in my user X session: for example: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ su [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ eog Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified Does anybody can diagnose the problem?
