Re: questions about generic Ethernet drivers, DHCP
I just installed slink recently. My IP address is assigned through dhcp, but while installing was unsure how to set dhcp up. I used the IP address I was currently assigned and that works for now. Will the below work to retrospectively setup dhcp so I won't have to change my IP address every time my lease expires? --- Jens B. I got the details of the HW from Windows NT which the machine already has on it. Not sure if its a PCI or ISA NIC. Has anyone heard of this NIC ? Dunno. Sorry. (2) How do I setup the system to use DHCP once the ethernet card is setup properly ? I never setup a machine to use DHCP but I am assuming that it isn't too tricky. Just install the dhcpcd package and in your /etc/init.d/network put in a line to start up this daemon with eth0 as an argument. I would like to get the machine up and running with slink, and then plan to upgrade it to potato and kernel 2.2.13 once networking is configured properly. Thanks for any info. -- Jens B. X Server won start
When I go through XF86Setup, I am a little unclear which options to choose. I have a RIVA TNT card and Gateway EV910 monitor. The specs on the monitor are.. resolution 1600x1200 display colors unlimited scanning freq. H 30-95kHz V 50-200Hz I chose several different monitor capabilities, all within the range of my monitor and several different screenmodes, from 800x640 - 1600-1200. When I do startx, I get the following... _XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running Fatal server error: Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full server output, not just the last messages Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key giving up. xinit: unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error. at which point, I am deposited back at a prompt. I am not very familiar with X at all and this is my first few attempts at installing it. Can anyone help me? = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. gateway.net
I am trying to connect through gateway.net. When I get a Login: prompt, I type my name and then I get a Password: prompt. I type it and get **BAD PASSWD** as a response. I have already ensured I am using the correct password. When I contacted gateway, they said they do not support this operating system environment. Has anyone else out there run into this problem and if so is there a fix other than switching my ISP. = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. Yahoo! Re: hard drive not found
Actually I figured this one out. The problem was my Ultra66 ATA controller. I unplugged my IDE cable from it and plugged it into the IDE on my motherboard instead. Thanks for the help. = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. Yahoo! Shopping: http://shopping.yahoo.com
Gateway name servers IP addresses
I use Gateway.net for an ISP and have been unsuccessful in retrieving their IP addresses for their name servers. Does anyone else use gateway.net? And if so, do you know the IP addresses? = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. Yahoo! Shopping: http://shopping.yahoo.com
ISP says bad passwd
I just bought a Jaton 56K internal modem. wvdialconf set everything up for me. When I use wvdial to attempt a connection, It says looks like a login prompt... sending login... looks like a password prompt... sending PASSWORD **BAD PASSWD** several times then gives up. I have ensured the passwd listed in /etc/wvdial.conf is the correct one. Any help? = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. Yahoo! This is what I think I'll try. Download to my windows/dos partition...reboot into linux...mount my dos partition...use the downloads directly from my dos partiton to upgrade XFree86. Is there a bundle of somekind I can download instead of downloading all these files one at a time? = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. Yahoo! Unidentified subject!
I have an Ultra66 ATA hard drive controller card on my computer. When attempting to load debian onto it, it would not recognize the hard drive. I unplugged the drive from the controller and plugged it into the IDE on the mother board and it works fine. My question: Is there a way for debian to recognize the hard drive while it is plugged into the Ultra66 controller? = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. Re: What video card do I use?
Here is what I would like to do until I can get a modem which supports linux. Download the packages necessary to upgrade my XFree86 on my windows partition...boot into my linux partition...mount my msdos partition...and upgrade it this way. Will this work? And if so, which files specifically do I need to download? = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. Yahoo! Shopping: http://shopping.yahoo.com

hard drive not found
I have a Gateway PC with a PIII 450 and a 9GB western digital hard drive. When I boot up with my Debian cd, my hard drive is not found. I see in the install documentation that IDE-SCSI drives are not supported. How do I know if this is what I have? This is the first time I've attempted to install an operating system of any kind, so be gentle. = rick __ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. All in one place. Yahoo!
