More X Problems Today
I'm running Debian Sid. This morning, I saw that quite a few X/Xorg packages were available to be upgraded. So, I went ahead and did the upgrades. I use kdm as my login display manager. After the upgrade, X started fine. However, when any user would try to login, the screen would go black momentarily and then return to the kdm login screen. No user could login. After checking the .xsession-errors file for each user, the following error was seen in all: /etc/kde3/kdm/Xsession: line46: /etc/X11/Xsession: No such file or directory I checked the /etc/X11 directory and corrected the problem by creating a symbolic link as follows: ln -s Xsession.xfree86 Xsession After this, users were able to logon as usual. I upgraded to 7.0.10 this morning. Unfortunately, after doing so, I could not get X to start. I thought it might be the symlink problem of which Mr. Campbell spoke. However, after checking, I found that the symlink had not been changed and was still pointing to /usr/bin/X11/Xorg. I am at a complete loss as to why X will not start. During Bootup, Error Concerning NTFS
I'm not sure when this started to occur. Perhaps after I installed the 2.6.16 kernel. In any event, I just noticed it today. During bootup, the following lines appear on the screen and in syslog: Mar 27 14:48:32 localhost kernel: NTFS driver 2.1.26 [Flags: R/W MODULE]. Mar 27 14:48:32 localhost kernel: NTFS volume version 3.1. Mar 27 14:48:32 localhost kernel: NTFS-fs warning (device hda1): load_system_files(): Unsupported volume flags 0x4000 encountered. Mar 27 14:48:32 localhost kernel: NTFS volume version 3.1. Obviously, I have a dual-boot system. when I run chkdsk on all my Windows drives, no error is found. Considering that the NTFS partition is being mounted read-only by Linux, I am not really concerned. But, I am curious what might be causing this error to show up. Anyone have any ideas?? Any pointers on how to proceed? Download the lineakd package. I also have the Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard. I use lineakd to set up those extra keys. Unfortunately, I have NOT been able to get all of them to work. The keys I have been unable to use are: Messenger, My Music, My Pictures, all the silver Favorites keys, Log Off, and the Zoom slider. The keys I DO have working are: the 3 volume keys (raise, lower, mute), the four audio media keys (play/pause, stop, previous, next), My Documents, Mail, Web/Home, Calculator, and Sleep Also, check out the lineak mailing list at https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/lineak-devel Rick - -- "What this country needs is more free speech worth listening to." - Hansell B. As stated else where, I do not thing the problem is burning the files, but it is erasing the disc if its a dvd+-rw with K3b, I seem to remember having similar problems with K3b some time ago might of been an early version maybe a year ago. I think I know what it was, it totally screwed up my /etc/fstab file, once I fixed it by hand, and did not let K3b setup use it again, still could not detect my cdrw right, even though I used the other options in K3b. Which version of K3b are you using? The other day, I installed the version from Sid (K3b 0.11.17). It found everything, including dvd+rw-format with no problem. Once I found it, I followed the instructions for my PSC 2210. Unable to use scanner
I have an HP PSC 2110 All-In-One (printer, copier, scanner & fax). So far, I have not been able to figure out how to use it with Debian (Sarge). I ran the sane-find-scanner command and received the following output: found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [Hewlett-Packard], product=0x2911 [PSC 2200 Series]) at libusb:002:002 # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. I ran scanimage -L and received the following: No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages). What do I have to do to get the scanner working? Is it even supported by SANE? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rick -- "The mind of a bigot is like the pupil of the eye. Change URGENT notification in KDE
As it is now, the URGENT notification in KDE flashes the taskbar entry for an app, 3 times. Is there anyway to have it flash continuously? Somehow grub doesn't get activated any longer at boot and the PC boots directly off MBR (so I guess). I checked the /boot/grub/menu.lst; everything fine and there. At boot, grub doesn't come up at all; no splash, no nothing; the kernel gets loaded immediately. Here is no help needed; I'll take out a grub-floppy and get it setup again; I guess. I would like to try clamav but, before I do, I'd like to know if it's possible to have clamav scan emails with Thunderbird as the email client? However this may not give an accurate result as you may have some packages that are not installed on your system but have not been purged. Perhaps: dpkg -l | grep "^ii" |wc -l As for the number of files in a directory. If you are just looking for the individual directory a ls -l | wc -l will give you the number of files in a directory. If you wanted to recurs and find out how many total file in a directory and all sub directories you may need to write a short shell script to do this, or there may be another way.
