booting with same destop / app setup different video and network cards

2004-04-14 Thread Robert Fernando -ntlworld
Hi all,
Is it possible to configure linux to either auto detect a change in Ethernet
and video card or allow manual selection of the correct drivers at boot
time.
I.e. so that one hardisk can be shared between two pc with different
hardware.

Can the x Windows system be setup to use Intel Agp 470 video card in one
config and a Diamond Stealth 2500 in a another pc/ configuration ?

thanks

Re: locating and installation of missing drivers, which are not installed on the hd

2004-04-08 Thread Robert Fernando -ntlworld
Hi all,

Having done a little more investigating it appears that drivers.tgz file on
CD 1 contains all of the files I require to update modconf and enable
installation of the missing drivers.

drivers.tgz is the following location
/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/3.0.23-2002-05-21 contains the most
comprehensive list of driver modules
Inside this file there appears to be a install.sh file which is run to
install all of the drivers and associated modconf files

Is my deduction correct ?

Would I also be correct in thinking drivers from different kernel
configurations / same kernel build level (i.e. 2.2.X) are compatible ?

locating and installation of missing drivers, which are not installed on the hd

2004-04-08 Thread Robert Fernando -ntlworld
Hi all,
I installed debian version 3.0r2 / woody wit the idepci kernel, and now find
that some of the modules I require for my hardware, such as ide-scsci (to
enable cdrrecord) and es1371 (for my sound card) have not been installed on
the hardisk.
Is it possible to download these missing modules and manually install them
from either CD preferred option or of the internet.
Can modconf be updated with a knowledge of the missing modules ?

thanks
