RE: Network Card Complication in Kernel Compliation - Intel Ethe
OKay Just ignore this one. After reading a little hint from the Ethernet How-To and a quick lookup of the Lilo.conf man pages... I finally got it working. And here is a quirk sidesince it finally worked... I added in the 3rd Network Card in it and it works beautifully now. Sometimes... when I asked a questionthe answers usually pops up before someone answered it. :) BTW...have anyone checked out the www.linux-howto.com site? It is really nice and very useful tool there. That where I found my answers. :) Anyway... got everything running as it supposed to and I am very happy. Network Card Complication in Kernel Compliation - Intel EtherExpress Pro/10 +
Okay... I got a really annoying problem here. I have two Intel EtherExpress Pro/10+ ISA LAN Adapters. I basically wanted to have both activated and running in Linux. But I need to set it up so that I can use both at the same time. Right now... it seems that it only activates one, not two. So..where exactly do I have to do to complie the kernel to get both working? I have complied it as built into the kernel which I complied and ran fine. But it only detects one... not two as it supposed to be. Any suggestions on this? Someone mentioned support but what exact is support do I need in the Kernel setup? I preferred to complie the kernel with no modules for speed and reliablity with no extra junk in it. :) Any help is appreciated. The info of the Network Card is as follows: Network Card #1 - io=280, irq=7 Network Card #2 - io=300, irq=3 Any help to make them running is appreciated. -- Date: 04-Jun-99 Time:19:38:21 Russell Rademacher Grapevine2 Technical Support Specialist System Adminstrator Toll-Free: 800-267-3070 Phone: 716-214-5644 Fax: 716-214-5642 TDD: 716-214-5643 ICQ: 10663810 AIM: ElikCyber --
Re: Web site shuts down Netscape
Hello. Which version of Netscape are you using? I have upgraded my Netscape from 4.5 to 4.6 and lo' behold the problems with it have been resolved. I checked several sites that gave me fits due to HTML codes, Java and few others..and it works perfectly. So I recommend that you upgrade it to 4.6 version from Netscape site and use the deb installer 4.0 version to install it for you. It works and it performs faster than the older versions did. They did nice job of it as well. On 25-May-99 Thorsten Manegold wrote: > Hi! > >> Try disabling java and javascript and see what happens. Re: mail clients
While people are complaining about this... they have overlooked one email client that does that job as I have been using at work. It is called XFMail. It is full featured email client written like 3 years back and it got rules filtering system so you can set it any which way you want. Dunno if there is a deb package for it but you can complie it yourself and install it. I have been using it for nearly a year and have no complaint about it. Although.. it would be nice if they updated it to GTK Style..but Balsa Mail and few others are getting to that point soon. Check it out. You like it. Diald Installation and Setup
Hello guys. It seems it is little frustrating here on getting good answers on trying to get the diald working. So... how about someone giving me a step by step on their setup to get the diald working and the copies of the files related to it so I can just edit the phone number and the device setting so I can see if it works here. Basically...what I am looking for is this. I have Slip, PPP and diald installed along with ethernet card in it. I am planning to have MASQ working after the diald part is set. The pon setting is working fine and it works great. It does connect and disconnect using ttyS1 for the modem. What I need to know is how to make it work using the dynamic IP allocation by using the box itself and by the network by diald. So I appreciate if someone give me complete set of files that you have that make yours work including the files in the /etc and /etc/diald section that is related to diald. That includes the IP addressing, network settings and the setup relating to it like hosts, hosts.conf, resolv.conf and ifconfig settings. One of those areas are what making it not work properly as it should. Some people have said about remote and local IP address setting and such, but it is not exactly clear. So. I appreciate it if someone actually make a tarball of all files that is related to it so I can study it and make a few changes to it like the phone number and the device setting and then let me try it from there. Then it should show me what is going wrong with what I did in the first place. I really need to get this working and finished today. Thanks and hope to hear some replies on this so maybe... a new update on the diald documentations/FAQ might be in order to make this problems from coming up again with successfull manual PPP connection. -- Date: 19-Apr-99 Time:11:05:29 Russell Rademacher Grapevine2 Technical Support Specialist System Adminstrator Toll-Free: 800-267-3070 Phone: 716-214-5644 Fax: 716-214-5642 TDD: 716-214-5643 ICQ: 10663810 AIM: ElikCyber --
Diald Problems
Hello guys. I am still stuck with this diald problems which is getting nuts. It seems it works fine for everyone else but not here. Basically... I am on the box itself which have diald installed and I have set the local and remote hosts at 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and set the dial-up connection properly which works by pon. Now... the problem is... I am trying to make diald to function properly as it supposed to be by PPP connection. What is the main purpose of slip running in the background? What is it supposed to be listening so it can detect the network request packet and then actually start dialing? What is required in the files itself as follows: hosts.conf resolv.conf networks diald.options What my setup is that I like to use the box itself to do dial-on-demand by running lynx, ping or other network utilities to get the diald to start dialing out on /dev/ttyS1. It uses dynamic IP address allocation. So.. I appreicate someone out there give me full assistance on this problem since I cannot make it work properly. Thank you. Re: Diald Setup
Okay... I checked the process by ps x and seen that diald is running. Unfortunably, the dial-on demand is not working yet as I tried doing lynx, ftp or ping from root or user account. As for the package version, it is diald_0.16.5-3.deb version. So...any more clues? I mean.. it does not dial-out at all. :) I needed that diald working so that once that is working, I can use the Masq system along with network card so that the network system can use that box to dial out from that box. > You should be all set. Re: Diald Setup
Okay... Got it re-installed and pulled a copy from the /usr/doc/diald the diald.options which is missing from the /usr/diald and edited it to similar like yours. I also set up the connection using ppp-config and tested the ttyS1 which works. Now... I tried from the root using lynx and it failed since it says it Unable to connect to remote host. What other sections that need to be set like host.conf, resolv.conf and others? I currently have the 2 nameservers set in the resolv.conf file. Kind of weird since I can setup the networking system but not the dial-up system. :) How did you set up yours to test the system? So I can see what you did so I can set up this system and make it run. :) > Try reinstalling diald. Re: Diald Setup
Well... from the documenations, it seems that diald.options, and diald.conf is missing. Everything else seems to be in the right place except for those two. Secondly, I tried to get it to work from my little editing and it does not work at all. Heck.. I fired up lynx and got this message: Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host. Now... what I understand, diald's purpose is to make a connection either by ISDN or 56K modem when you do TCP/IP query from the box. So... is there some areas that need to be configured beside diald to make the system work properly? I am sort of lost here and I am considering un-installing the diald and do a installation by source instead to make it work since the debianized version do not work and the documenations from the diald's website says quite a few things differently here as well. I am not trying to put down Debian. Quite the opposite but this is the first gripes I came across with this one since I have used Debian for past few months and had no problems setting up few different areas. This diald is the new project and this baffled me. :) On 15-Apr-99 John Hasler wrote: > Russell Rademacher writes: >> I would appreciate some assistance on getting the Diald working. Dial-on Demand with Masq Setup Box
Hello guys. Okay.. I got a little project to work on in few days and I would appreciate some pointers and help on this one. Basically I am little familiar with the Masq system...but what I would like to do is setup this system as like this. I like the system to be a central gateway using ISDN Modem so it dials on demand to the ISP when someone from the Lan Network send out a TCP/IP request out like browser or something and get hooked on to the ISP using the system. Bandwidth Control Program
Hello guys. Okay. Here is a question. I am looking for a bandwidth control software so I can cramp down on the amount of bandwidth on certain network LANs that I am setting up here. In other words, we are an ISP here but we are expanding to provide LAN networks to several offices in this building where we resides so they have direct access to the Internet though our T3 connectivity here. So...I am looking for a bandwidth controller so I can limit the speed of the network to those people so they do not suck up all the bandwidth that is delicated solely to the ISP services and provide little of it to them which is sufficient for them to use. Hello! I figures I post this help information to the user list due to huge volume of emails passing though there. Okay... I going to need assistance on few things. I am setting up 3 servers but I would appreicate some helpful guides and information to make the setup run properly and make the maintainance easier. Here is the setup that I am going to do and need to make it workable with Debian Slink 2.1 Server: Web/Email Server DNS/MUD/Shell Server General-Backup-FTP What is the best and perferred method to setup this 3 servers to make it look like it is one complete server from the user standpoint but it is in reality three servers. Reason is that we might be adding more servers as Web Servers and we like to set this up so we can split the tasks among three to make efficent usage of the system. Web/Email Server - It will be the webhosting for virtual hosts and for webpages by our customers which they can access by ftp and uploading it into their directory. DNS/MUD/Shell Server - We also like to offer the customers the shell accounts as well by telnet and we like to move it over to the one central computer so it can have better access to the processor without the Web, FTP and Email to bog it down. It will also house the MUD servers as well. General-Backup-FTP - It will house the FTP area for downloads, uploads and other tasks and also to do the daily maintaniance of daily backups from the Web/Email and Shell Accounts. So...what is the best configuration and what do we need to do to make the system work smoothly over the fractional T3 line since we will be adding more webservers as time goes by but that can be discussed later. All tips, information, and such is welcomed and needed. Thanks. -- Date: 30-Jan-99 Time:13:07:49 Russell Rademacher Grapevine2 Technical Support Specialist Pager: 800-480-9498 #1041 Phone: 716-214-5644 Fax: 716-214-5642 TDD: 716-214-5643 ICQ: 10663810 AIM: ElikCyber --
Windoze Printer and Linux Box Setup Woes
Okay... seems I still cannot get anything working right with this as far getting it to print. Here is the three different files which I would like all to look at and see what I have screwed up since it refuses to print. Here is the setup of the network: HP 5L connected to Win95 - 192.168.0.1 Linux - Zeus - 192.168.0.3 ---SMB.CONF FILE ; /etc/smb.conf [global] printing = bsd printcap name = /etc/printcap load printers = yes guest account = nobody invalid users = root announce as = Win95 allow hosts = 192.168.0.3 192.168.0.4 192.168.0.1 remote announce = 192.168.0.255/GV2 remote browse sync = 192.168.0.255 security = share workgroup = GV2 server string = %h server (Samba %v) socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=4096 SO_RCVBUF=4096 encrypt passwords = yes wins support = no os level = 0 domain master = no local master = yes preferred master = no name resolve order = bcast host wins dns proxy = no preserve case = yes short preserve case = yes unix password sync = false passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *New\spassword:* %n\n *Re-enter\snew\spassword:* %n\n *Passwor max log size = 1000 [home] comment = Home Directories browseable = yes path=/ writable=yes public=yes directory mask = 0775 [printers] comment = All Printers browseable = yes path = /tmp printable = yes public = yes writable = yes create mode = 0775 ; A sample share for sharing your CD-ROM with others. ;[cdrom] ; comment = Samba server's CD-ROM ; writable = no ; locking = no ; path = /cdrom ; public = yes ; [public] comment=Zeus path=/ only guest=yes public=yes writable=yes printable=no PRINTCAP FILE- # Printcap Configuration File lp|hplj5l|HP Laserjet 5L:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/hplj5l:\ :mx#0:\ :af=/var/log/hpl5jl-acct:\ :lf=/var/log/hplj5l-errs:\ :if=/usr/bin/smbprint:\ :sh: SMBPRINT FILLE #!/bin/sh -x ( echo "print -" /etc/magicfilter/ljet4l-filter "$@" ) | /usr/bin/smbclient "GOD_SERVER\\HP5L" -I 192.168.0.1 -N -P > /var/log/smbprint.log So... here is the problem. The linux cannot print out to the HP Printer 5L that is connected to the Windoze. And top of it off... The Win95 clients cannot even browse or get inside the Linux directories at all. Reason I have the IP addresses in there is for secure method of allowing certain hosts to have free access into the Linux to do the work even at the top. But the good news is... I can mount the 2 Windoze shares on the Linux using Smbmount and edited the samba start-up/shutdown files to mount and unmount them on the fly with no problem. So... the printing and the Win95 access into the linux is what I needed to make this work and I will be so happy that I can leave this behind and start focusing on other tasks. It would be nice if there is a way to mount the printer to the port on Linux instead of this way as it is right now. So... anyone who can edit this configuration and make it work like I wanted would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your time.
