Mail Question

1998-11-26 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
I want to put a couple of lines in ip-up, so that everytime my ppp
is on, it will automatically contact my mail server, send out my
username and passwd, retrieve all the mails from the server, and append
them to my local INBOX(.incoming-mail).

Could anyone please teach me how to do this??

Thanks.
Shao.

PPP connection speed

1998-11-25 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
I have three ISPs, let me name them A, B and C.
A is very new(technology), B & C are relatively old compare to A.

In debian, for ISP A, I can have a average download rate 3k/s. But for B &
C, the download rate is only about 800bytes/s.

But for the same matchine, in RedHat 5.1, I can have a download rate at
3k/s for all three ISPs.

Some kind debian users advised me to change the line in
/etc/rc.boot/0setserial from
STD_FLAGS="session_lockout"
to STD_FLAGS="session_lockout spd_vhi"

I tried that and it didn't help.

Also, someone advised me to use mru/mtu. If you think this will solve the
problem, could you please give me more info on mru/mtu?

And is bsdcompression vital to speed up the connection??

By the way, I didn't use the debian script pon and poff. Since I have many
ISPs, I wrote a shell script for them. It looks as follows:

case $1 in
A)
/usr/sbin/pppd connect 'chat -v "" ATDT CONNECT ""\
"OK" ogin: USERNAME word: PASSWORD election 3' /dev/modem 115200 \
-detach crtscts modem defaultroute &
;;

Is there anything wrong with the script? I use them in Redhat as well, and
it didn't cause trouble at all...

Thanks for any help in advance.

Regards,

Shao.

Re: Debian & Chinese & Netscape!

1998-10-02 Thread Shao Ying Zhang

Hi Jimen,
What do you mean by builtin?? You still need to download the
chinese fonts before you can use the 'encoding' in netscape. Is this
right??

I can get Chinese displayed in most of cases... But for some web
pages with heavy java and frames, I cannot read Chinese there...

Do you know anyway to fix it??

try out at mikemike.simplenet.com

Debian & Chinese & Netscape!

1998-10-01 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
I have downloaded the chinese package xfntbig5p-cmex24m_0.1-1.deb.

I then installed this package, and used the following commands to
set font:

xset fp+ /usr/lib/X11/fonts/chinese
xset fp rehash

Now, my crxvt is working fine!

But I still cannot display chinese in netscape(3.0).

Is it alright for me to download other fonts and then install in
the same directory?? Because I know the fonts I need...

That's only a minor problem! My big problem is for some web pages,
especially those with java and frames, chinese cannot be displayed at
all!!!

However, I can do this in NT...

So I must be able to do it in LINUX. So Who can teach me please??

You can try to display the chinese with the link below, if you can
see it, please tell me how

http://mikemike.simplenet.com/

Thanks

I have tried out most of other laser* filters, but just wasted 30 pages of

Anyone can teach me how to use cti-ifhp???

Any other alternatives??

ii lprng-doc 3.4.1-3lpr/lpd printer spooli

*** Oops, how come no lpd is running!!

bash-2.01$ find /etc/rc2.d -name *lp*
/etc/rc2.d/S20lprng

bash-2.01$ lpc status
cannot open connection to [EMAIL PROTECTED]' - Connection refused

In the file /var/spool/lpd/lp/status.lp, it contains:
opening '/dev/lp1' at 00:32:52, attempt 1, timeout 10, grace 0 at 00:32:52
cannot open '/dev/lp1' - 'Device not configured', attempt 1, sleeping 10

But I am sure that Parallel support is compiled in my kernel!!!

But i also have the feeling that it has something to do with the

because I have compiled it for many times

PPP Connection Speed

1998-09-29 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
Could anyone please help me with this?

Somehow, I cannot get a fast ppp connection anymore.

In redhat, my ppp connection is normally around 3K/sec.

But in debian, my ppp connection is around 800bytes/sec.

I had this ppp problem once in RedHat. I initialised my ppp

when system redhat booted up. The system will keep calling pppd to

check if my modem is available. so when I turn on my modem, it will

start dialing. With this configuration, my ppp connection is always

below 1K/sec. Once I disabled it, it went up to 3K/sec on average.

So, my guess is there is a similar situation in debian. But

this time I don't have any idea at all. Could some ppp experts give me

some tips to work around.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

check out /var/log/messages, see what is the error.
My guess is that you have to set the option noauth.

try change the line from auth to noauth in your /etc/ppp/options.

DEB vs RPM

1998-09-28 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
Lots people have told me that there are more deb packages than
rpm. But just by looking at the web site rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/, they
have 10434 packages listed.

Now, do we have this number of deb packages?? Am I missing out any
gook web site??

Anyway, we can always install RPM in our debian system. But my
concern is: Will it stuff up the dpkg system??

Any suggestions are appreciated...
Regards,

Shao

Diamond 3D 2000 with S3V to display 24 bit color

1998-09-28 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
I have a Diamond 3D 2000 video card. The chip is S3 Virge. The
memory of the videocard is 4 meg.

With this configuration, I cannot display 24bit color under XF86.
I am pretty sure that my hardware is capable of doing that, as I can do it
under NT.

When I switch the default color depth to 24bit in XF86Config, my
monitor started blinking

Could anyone help me please...

Regards,

Shao.

Flicking in xterms when using vi

1998-09-27 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi guys,
Sorry for asking the same question again..

when I use vi in an xterm, and when I reached the EOF, my xterm
started flicking.

Someone kindly advised me to set the visual bell off. So I used
the command xterm +vb +mb, but it does not work.

I then edited my .Xdefaults to set the visual bell off, and it
does not help.

I can simply use rxvt to overcome this problem. But I would really
like to find out what is going on

thanks for any help in advance...

SB32 PnP & Midi

1998-09-27 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
I finally managed to insert the sound module.

Now I have another problem, and I never get it work under redhat
before.

After recompile the sound kernel as a module and installed isapnp
tools, now wave and cd is working fine. But midi is not working.

I tried playmidi, and it just did not output any sound at all...

Anyone else have a similar problem??

Thanks!
PS: I really want my midi port working, I don't want to use timidity as it
uses a lot of resources...

Regards.

Sorry, still cannot get it. When I tried make modules_install, I got the
following:
virge:/usr/src/kernel-source-2.0.34# make modules_install
ls: *.o: No such file or directory

I have checked that in /usr/src/linux/modules, there isn't any *.o
files...

Could anyone tell me where I did wrong?

SB16 PnP

1998-09-27 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
I just recompiled the kernel, and included sound as a module.

I rebooted with the new kernel and everything seems fine.

I then use isapnp tools to generate a isapnp.conf.

But when I try to test my sound card, I got the following error:

virge:/usr/src# insmod sound
insmod: sound: no module by that name found

virge:/usr/src# modprobe -a sound
can't locate module sound

Could anyone help me please

If I login in an ascii mode, then the path is fine. But in

PPP problem.

1998-09-24 Thread Shao Ying Zhang
Hi all,
I am only new to debian.
I wrote a dial up script in redhat, and it works well.

I recently installed debian 2.0, and used the same dial up script.

The system dialed out fine. And ping was working fine.
But telnet, ftp & lynx does not work. My /etc/resolve.conf does
not contain anything, and it is empty in redhat anway...

Am I missing anything??

By the way, I also set the noauth option in my /etc/ppp/options..

Thanks for any help in advance..
