Q: 'df' reports partition is full but 'du' shows not full partition -- how to find where the problem

2015-04-07 Thread Snow Leopard

Hello,

what would be a best approach for the following situation:

You have a web server and monitoring system reports that you short on
disk space. You login into web server computer and command 'df' indeed
shows that some partition is almost full.

How would you resolve the issue if 'du' does not confirm that disk is full.
You 'du' all directories in the root of the partition but sum does not
adds up to match 'Use%' reported by 'df'.

For such situation I would assume that some process holds huge open file
which was deleted (for example your web server was compromised).

Question: how would you find the process which holds 'deleted' file?

Thanks,
Andy

NetInstaller Wheezy (7.8) on ASUS M4A78A-M/CSM does not see SATA HDDs

2015-03-22 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi,

I am attempting to netinstall Wheezy (7.8) on a computer with ASUS
M4A785-M/CSM mainboard (BIOS was updated to most recent version 2302
2011/03/18) and WD 2TB SATA HDD.

Netnstaller requires network driver (rtl_nic) which I provided on USB
drive and the installer gained network access.

But netinstaller does not see SATA HDDs (tried SATA in both IDE / AHCI
BIOS mode settings -- HDD WD20).

Please nudge me in right direction what should be done on my part to
make netinstaller to be able see SATA hard drives.

Thank you in advance
Andy

Q: Apache::mod_proxy how implement request forward for image files

2015-03-18 Thread Snow Leopard

Hello,

Can somebody explain how next task can be accomplished? My own attempt
to figure out how this can be achieved wasn't successful.

I do not see any problem with virtual servers. But how to implement in
apache2 through mod_proxy forwarding for image files requests only? And
how on backend virtual server exclude/blocks a requests for all types of
files except pictures?

Create a new Apache VirtualHost that meets the following requirements:
Name: frontend.${IP}.example.com
Port: 80
Document Root: /var/www/vhosts/frontend/htdocs
Using Mod Proxy, forward all requests for image files
(.jpg, .gif, or .png) to the backend server without modifying the URL of
the request
All errors should log to
/var/www/vhosts/frontend/logs/error.log
All access requests should be logged to
/var/www/vhosts/frontend/logs/access.log except for requests for any
files ending in .jpg, .gif, .png.

Backend Site

Create another Apache VirtualHost that meets the following
requirements:

Name: backend.${IP}.example.com
Port: 8001
Document Root: /var/www/vhosts/backend/htdocs
Configure this VirtualHost to respond with a 403 Forbidden
error for all requests for files that do not contain an extension of
.jpg, .gif, or .png

Thank you in advance,
Andy

would allow recording as I did in win media center as wekk as watch live tv
(since it is a dual tuner type and will let me do that)

I've been using MythTV for many years and am happy with it. I use packages
from the 3rd party deb-multimedia.org repository.

MythTV will let you watch live tv, schedule/record shows, and will even skip
the commercials automatically if you set it up to do so.

Help: Ubuntu 12.04LTS/14.04LTS PXE/netboot/preseed - does not initiate installation

2014-08-25 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi,

I stumbled on a problem with Ubuntu installation PXE/netboot/preseed.

OS: Ubuntu 12.04LTS/14.04LTS

I have setup for DHCP/TFTP/NFS which allows me to boot over network
Live Ubuntu and everything works as it should.

Next logical step would be automatic installation by utilizing preseed
file. And here I hit a snag -- Ubuntu copies the file but I do not see
any attempt to start installation (search on internet give multiple
examples and most of them look alike but do not work in my case).

So in PXE configuration file I have next block

LABEL 8
MENU LABEL Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop (i^386) auto
KERNEL Ubuntu/12.04/desktop/i386/vmlinuz
APPEND root=/dev/nfs boot=casper netboot=nfs
nfsroot=192.168.0.64:/var/www/dvd/Ubuntu/12.04/desktop/i386
initrd=Ubuntu/12.04/desktop/i386/initrd.lz auto
url=http://192.168.0.64/preseed/ubuntu/12.04/desktop/i386/preseed.conf

TEXT HELP
Boot the Ubuntu 12.04 desktop i386 auto
ENDTEXT

By selecting this option from PXE menu the computer continues to boot
and at some point it retrieves preseed file from webserver. Shortly
after that boot process starts graphical screen where I can see Install
Ubuntu icon and then process stops.

I am not sure how to troubleshoot this situation and best what I could
find is /var/log/casper.log file which has next content

Q: Wheezy preseed -- How to define default display manager?

2014-08-24 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi,

I am working on preseed.conf file for wheezy and can not find
information on how define default display manager.

--- Snippet from preseed file --
tasksel tasksel/first multiselect standard, desktop
tasksel tasksel/desktop multiselect kde, xfce
--- Snippet from preseed file --

During handsoff installation I asked to define default display manager.

What is required to be put in preseed file to provide an answer so
that installation proceed without asking the question?

This piece of information is missing on next page or
example-preseed.conffile

https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/apb.html

Ubuntu documentation has next piece of information which I believe does
not apply to Debian Wheezy

A new *|preseed|*command has been added to provide a convenient way to
preseed additional items in the debconf database that are not directly
accessible using the ordinary Kickstart syntax:

preseed --owner gdm shared/default-x-display-manager select gdm

Re: Q: Wheezy preseed -- How to define default display manager?

2014-08-24 Thread Snow Leopard

Ok,

after hands off installation with answering the question manually --
I've installed debconf-utils and run some investigation

root# debconf-get-selections /tmp/answers
root# vi /tmp/answers

# Default display manager:
# Choices: kdm, lightdm
kdm shared/default-x-display-managerselect kdm
lightdm shared/default-x-display-managerselect kdm

well it looks like for all installed display managers we have to
define default-x-display-manager.

Hmm, it is not very elegant but does the job.

Andy

Hi,

ok, next web page states that GeForce 7300 does not support VDPAU. A
quick swap of video card to GeForce 8400 and mplayer plays video
through VDPAU driver with average load on CPU 4%-5%.

Looking into mencoder issue.

Q: nfs server fails to mount own exported resource, but other client able to mount

2014-04-24 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi,

I came across strange mount problem on nfs server -- it refuses to
mount it's own directory while other nfs clients able mount nfs server
exported directoryjust fine

1. nfs server
name: install.myclub.com
OS: wheeze (Debian)
ip: 192.168.0.62
/etc/exports: /export/home 192.163.0.0/24(rw,subtree_check)
drxwrxwrxw /export/home

2. client1
name: meteor.myclub.com
OS: Valhalla (Red Hat 7.3)
ip: 192.168.0.1
mount -t nfs install:myclub.com:/export/home /mnt
mounts directory without any error

3. client2
name: moon.myclub.com
OS: squeeze (Debian)
ip: 192.168.0.64
mount -t nfs install:myclub.com:/export/home /mnt
mounts directory without any error

4. client3 (nfs server itself)
name: install.myclub.com
OS: wheeze (Debian)
ip: 192.168.0.62
mount -t nfs 192.168.0.62:/export/home /mnt
mounts directory without any error

5. client4 (nfs server itself)
name: install.myclub.com
OS: wheeze (Debian)
ip: 192.168.0.62
mount -t nfs install:/export/home /mnt
mounts fails with an error

mount -v -t nfs install:/export/home /mnt
mount.nfs: timeout set for Thu Apr 24 01:21:36 2014

mount.nfs: mount(2): Permission denied
mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting
install.myclub.com:/export/home

The error indicates that when I attempt to mount by using FQDN of nfs
server -- the name resolves to 127.0.1.1 and client resolves to 127.0.0.1 .

cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 install.myclub.com install

If I modify /etc/hosts to

cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
#127.0.1.1 install.myclub.com install

then

mount -v -t nfs install.myclub.com:/export/home /mnt
mount.nfs: timeout set for Thu Apr 24 01:29:50 2014
mount.nfs: trying text-based options
'vers=4,addr=192.168.0.62,clientaddr=192.168.0.62'

mounts directory without any error, while

mount -v -t nfs install:/export/home /mnt
mount.nfs: timeout set for Thu Apr 24 01:29:27 2014
mount.nfs: trying text-based options
'vers=4,addr=127.0.0.1,clientaddr=127.0.0.1'

mount.nfs: mount(2): Permission denied
mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting install:/export/home

I do not recall when a record 127.0.1.1 appear in /etc/hosts (Squeezy
and Wheeze both have it) for first time, it is default record added
during installation.

I puzzled and run out of ideas why nfs server is not able to mount own
exported directory. I see that mount tries to mount through loopback
and for some inexplicable to me reason it fails. Why does it happen?

What am I missing?

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=719621

--- Quote --
The IP address |127.0.1.1|in the second line of this example may not be
found on some other Unix-like systems. The Debian Installer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian-Installercreates this entry for a
system without a permanent IP address as a workaround for some software
(e.g., GNOME) as documented in the bug #719621
http://bugs.debian.org/719621.

--- End of Quote ---

Thank you for any clue how this problem can be fixed.

Andy

Is it a bug -- mount does not work on 127.0.0.1/127.0.1.1 interfaces?

2014-04-24 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi,

OS: wheezy / squeeze

Could somebody explain what wrong?
Why mount refuses to mount through loopback interface?

The issue can be reproduced in your system with next set of commands

root# mkdir -p /exports/home
root# cat /etc/exports
/export/home 192.168.0.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)
^C
root# exportfs -ra
root# mount -t nfs 127.0.0.1:/export/home /mnt

Is there a cure for this issue? Or am I missing something?

Regards,
Andy

Re: Q: nfs server fails to mount own exported resource, but other client able to mount

2014-04-24 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi,

the mystery has been resolved -- question how did I not catch it right away?

I found that my old Red Hat system and Debian Wheezy/Squeezy resolve
computer name into ip address in different ways.

Red Hat mount maps computer name to DHCP ip address
Debian mount maps computer name to loopback interface

My attention was somewhat distracted and I've missed that in this case
in /etc/exports a record should look

not like
/export/home192.168.0.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)

but instead
/export/home192.168.0.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)
127.0.0.0/16(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)

The clue was found in logfiles
/var/log/syslog.1:Apr 24 10:29:19 vega mountd[1320]: refused mount
request from 127.0.1.1 for /export/home (/export/home): unmatched host

The mystery is resolved.

Cheers,
Andy

I wonder if it is letting you mount as 'nfs' when you supply the IP
address, but is not letting you mount as 'nfs' when you try to address
the device locally (which doesn't surprise me).

While I don't use mount, I do use fstab to mount the device containing
our nfs export, locally

/dev/md5 /mnt/point ext4rw,auto,users,exec

Isn't the 'right' way to mount local filesystems directly as 'ext4' or
whatever, and only mount as 'nfs' if the filesystem has to be accessed
at another IP address?

Re: Is it a bug -- mount does not work on 127.0.0.1/127.0.1.1 interfaces? [RESOLVED]

2014-04-24 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi Don,

I found what the problem was about half an hour ago -- the clue was
found in logfiles

/var/log/syslog.1:Apr 24 10:29:19 vega mountd[1320]: refused mount
request from 127.0.1.1 for /export/home (/export/home): unmatched host

I got confused with my old configuration (Red Hat 7.3) where 'mount'
command resolved computer name into DHCP assigned ip address and not to
loopback/127.0.1.1 as it happens in Debian Wheezy/Squeezy.

Once I modified /etc/exports to

/export/home192.168.0.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)
127.0.0.0/16(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)

everything started to work as expected-- 'mount' has changed it's
behavior what required an adjustment on my part.

Thank you Don,
Andy

Why mount refuses to mount through loopback interface?

The issue can be reproduced in your system with next set of commands

root# mkdir -p /exports/home
root# cat /etc/exports
/export/home 192.168.0.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)

This is allowing access to all clients on network 192.168.0.0

^C
root# exportfs -ra
root# mount -t nfs 127.0.0.1:/export/home /mnt

You haven't allowed access to clients on network 127.0.0.0

You probably need something like this in /etc/exports:
/export/home 192.168.0.0/24(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)
127.0.0.0/24(rw,sync,nosubtree_check)

(all on one line, that probably got wrapped)

No bug. Just wrong configuration.

Hi,

is there an alternative for next book on LDAP (this book is good but

Particularly I am interested in next

1. [+] installation of slapd (accomplished)
2. [+] configuration of security (SASL/TLS [gnutls/openssl] -- acomplished)
3. [+] creating user accounts (accomplished)
4. [+] libnss and pam (acomplished)
5. [-] integration with samba
6. [-] integration with radius
7. [-] automount (what schema to use? nisautomount / automount)

I did search on internet and found many sources for configuring LDAP
server. Much of information is or outdated or not complete.

Any reference to an URL covering above mentioned points is greatly
appreciated. Or if somebody could provide a URL for HowTo: LDAP server
on Debian easy/short way your input would be greatly appreciated.

NOTE: configuration of slapd by editing /etc/ldap/slapd.conf is
considered outdated is there a document with good explanation of
modern way with good examples

Q: Squeeze - debmirror 1:2.4.5 / Bug #673444 : not fetch Translation files

2014-04-13 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi,

due limited traffic from my ISP (200GB/month) I've decided to make own
mirror for Debian wheeze.

A quick search brought my attention to debmirror utility. After a
couple days of download I had local mirror for wheeze and
wheeze-updates.

Shortly after the mirror was ready I configured Apache to serve files,
DHCP server and preceed.cfg to make automatic installation over
network utilizing PXE boot.

After a little struggle to make everything right to be able install OS
and packages I found that installation process stops to inform me that
i18n translation files are missing in wheeze-updates. My inspection of
wheeze-updates/main directory confirmed that directory i18n is missing.

My further investigation brought my attentions to bug #673444
(Maintainer: Joey Hess jo...@debian.org) in regard missing translation
files.

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=673444

So, it looks like Squeezy still has debmirror version which is affected
by this bug.

dpkg -l | grep debmirror
ii debmirror 1:2.4.5

For the moment I've added a block of code to my script to sync mirror
which resolves the issue

-- Begin my_mirror.sh
#!/bin/bash

.
.

#
# Translation files fix
#
# Description:
# Older version of debmirror does not copy a
# directory if file Index is missing. In this
# particular case client will not find directory
# Translation-en as dists/wheeze-updates/main/i18n
# directory misses Index file.
#
# Bugs: #673444
#
# Note:
# Newer version of debmirror relies on Packages.gz
# file instead of Index and do not have this problem.
#

URL=ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/wheezy-updates/main/i18n/

DIR=here
DIR_TMP=here/debian/dists/wheezy-updates/main/i18n
MIRROR=/home/debian/mirror/dists/wheezy-updates/main/

[ -d ${DIR} ]  rm -f ${DIR}

wget -r -nH -P here ${URL}

cp -r ${DIR_TMP} ${MIRROR}

rm -r here

-- End my_mirror.sh --

What is the best way to address this issue? Contact the maintainer? Use
backports?

Sincerely,

Andrew

Re: Q: LDAP - perl script using Net::LDAP and start_tls gives an error

2014-04-13 Thread Snow Leopard

Hi Atle,

in my case I am certificate agency (self-signed certificate) and I issue
private key and certificate (cacert.pem) as for root CA as for
LDAP server (server-key.pem and server-cert.pem) and LDAP perl script
client (client-key.pem and client-cert.pem).

The script and client run on the same computer (for the moment) and LDAP
server private key (private/server-key.pem) and certificate
(certs/server-cert.pem) located in /etc/ssl/ directory. CA root
certificate (certs/cacert.pem) is located in /etc/ssl/certs directory --
and as recommended I created certificate named using hash value

URL: https://metacpan.org/pod/Net::LDAP#start_tls

|ln -s cacert.pem `openssl x509 -hash -noout cacert.pem`.0

Client (perl script) has reference to client's key/cert in the script
which is stored in sub-directory 'certs' where located the script
(certs/client-key.pem and certs/client-cert.pem).

At the moment I am not fully grasp why verification of server
certificate fails.

I am welcome any ideas how to fix it.

NOTE: It is my first attempt to program with Net::LDAP and start_tls --
I am in process of learning how it works and how to program to use LDAP
over TLS in perl.

Thanks for any input,

Andrew

It seems to me that the verify-option tells Net::LDAP whether it
should verify that the certificate the server you are connecting to is
using has been signed by a known certificate authority (listed in
/etc/ssl/certs).

start_tls will fail if the server does not provide any certificate, or
if the certificate is not signed by a CA (ref
http://search.cpan.org/~marschap/perl-ldap/lib/Net/LDAP.pod ).
