Re: Debian on laptop

2008-06-13 Thread Steve Mazurek
I have been using Debian on refurbished Thinkpads for some time now and have
had no problems (except that caused by my own ignorance of the operating
system). At this time I am on a cable internet connection but I can also
use wireless connection when they are available. A friend who is a computer
professional first persuaded me to try Debian, It's got just about every
type of application you could want.

Thank you for your replies. I didn't try using aliases, but there was an
unescaped special character, ' , in the directory name. I omitted it and
the directory now exists and I can use it. Again, thanks for the speedy
replies.

mkdir no longer works

2008-06-07 Thread Steve Mazurek
I can no longer create directories with mkdir, neither as root from the
command line nor from within the terminals in the xwindow graphics system.
(I am using etchnhalf, linux image 2.6.22-4-686 on a Thinkpad T42) In
either case, when I type mkdir directory-name or mkdir path directory-name
and hit enter the output is always > on a new line. If I cd to the
directory where I'm trying to make the new subdirectory I receive the same
result. I've never had this happen before. I recently installed drivers
and firmware for ipw2100, which is now working, and I used mkdir and mv
while doing this. Any suggestions? Is there a bug involved? Thanks for
any advice.

Thanks. I had three kernels on the desktop and I removed 2.6.18-4. The
upgrade ran without any trouble. However, the Thinkpad only has 2.6.18-5and
2.6.18-6, so I'll have to remove something else.

Most recent linux-image-2.6.18-6-686 fails to install debian-user@lists.debian.org,

2008-02-14 Thread Steve Mazurek
I have been trying to install on etch the most recent
linux-image-2.6.18-6-686 on an IBM Thinkpad T23 with a Pentium 3 and on a
Gateway desktop also running a Pentium 3 using aptitude update && aptitude
upgrade. Every time I do this, I get the error message:

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-
image-2.6.8-6-686_2.6.18.dfsg.1-1-18etch1_i386.deb (--unpack): failed in
buffer_write (fd) (9, ret=-1): backend dpkg-deb during
'./lib/modules/2.6.18-6-686/kernel/drivers/media/dvb/dvb-core.ko' : No space
left on device

I am not sure what this means (my hlinux books are not available) nor do I
know what to do about this. I've found nothing googling the problem. I
switched to etch after it became stable and have had no trouble upgrading or
installing using aptitude. I'd appreciate any information you could give
me. Thanks.

Re: Attracting newbies (Was Booting Debian/testing fails)

2007-02-05 Thread Steve Mazurek

Good points, but the people who don't or don't want to upgrade aren't just
people who are afraid to change. A friend who first introduced me to Debian
still uses Woody. He hasn't upgraded because he downloaded a lot of
packages and upgrading would require more time than he has available. I'd
like to dist-upgrade to etch, but I'll wait until it becomes officially
stable. Right now, i just don't have the time to tinker with it.

of course! ;-)

bleh. responsing anyway...

I return to the example of my mom. Many people don't want to "update"
their system. They want it to just work and stay that way. Many users,
especially novices, don't deal well with change and don't want
it. Ubuntu, if you don't upgrade, is perfect in this respect. At the
time it is released, it just works. If you leave it there, if will, of
course, just work forever.

This same thing applies in the wondows world. I work on win98 machines
quite a bit because people don't want to change (there are hardware
issues too...).

People don't want to upgrade constantly but want instead to just go
out and buy a new computer every X-years and use whatever that new
system is. Ubuntu fits that mold nicely, IMO. Note that I have little
experience with ubuntu -- just my impression.

not a bad idea. although we all know that unstable is a good name for
it, it can be scary. Many people think it means their system will be
unstable (which it might) not that it refers to the state of package
movement within the release. Ummm... how about "CuttingEdge" instead
of "Bleeding Edge" or how about just refering to sid only?

I've used FC2, Mandrake (both of which I like very much) and Debian
Sarge.  Currently I am using Xandros, which is Debian-based.
I'm not using Sarge right now because there are a lot of packages
included and it's hard for me to determine which I need or don't
need.  If i install too many,  I'll probably get things
messed up.  What I'm going to do is get a book dedicated
specifically to Debian, determine what I need, and then reinstall
Debian Sarge.  But I will definitely go back to Debian.
