If you use Windowmaker, you can use wmppp which monitors if your
connected, the connection speed, etc. It probably works fine with
other window managers, but they tend to have their own, more native
 looking applets.

If I recall the AT command set might also have a volume control. ATVn
where n=0-3. Of course this is from memory of my old 14.4 US Robotics
modem manual, so try to verify that independently. :)

 Hello-

My questions regards the safety of using the wvdial program to log on to

Wvdial can only be set to be run as root, isn't that right?
If it isn't so, how should you set permission to run it without being
 root?
Is this even something we should be worrying about? Is it safe to run
 wvdial as root then surf?

Help would be greatly appreciated, I'm not quite a total newbie with
Linux, but I'm not a techie.
 Thank you.

 Best regards,

New Kernel Not Recognised In LILO

2001-03-11 Thread Tomaas Ortega

I have compiled a new kernel and the image file is in /boot. I
install it in lilo.conf and when i run lilo it adds the new kernel but when i
restart the machine and try to boot it up using the new kernel it does not
detect it. [TAB] at the LILO prompt only shows Linux as the kernel when the
bzImage is in /boot and LILO.conf configurations are correct.

When i try to set the root partition, which is /dev/hda6
however it does not recognise /dev/hda6 as a valid root partition. I am using
2.2.17 kenel at the moment and am trying to upgrade it to 2.4.2 but it just
doesnt want to do it. Are there any problems within the 2.2.17 kernel that i am
not aware of. This problem has really stumped me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Tom
