Don't panic--it ran in July 2005. However, the message is an important one, so we're running this classic column again for all those people who didn't get a chance to read it the first time. Concentrating on testing is one of the most challenging tasks for developers. I've lost count of the number of times a developer has raced into my office to tell me that a piece of software is done, only to race back out of my office when I ask, Have you tested it? However, that isn't as bad as the response, Well I'm not sure this code can be tested before we send it to integration because The fact is most developers are lousy testers. Don't get me wrong. I understand that testing isn't exactly the most exciting activity, especially since in the past, most developers accompanied each DLL or back-end component with a custom Windows Form that could act as a test harness. What occurs then is the creation of custom code to call the methods, set up the conditions, and ensure the code works correctly. Unfortunately, even this type of testing is only as good as the person writing the tests, so the axiom that most developers are lousy testers bears repeating. I also understand that it takes a long time to develop tests and that most organizations fail to treat even automated test frames with the same level of source control as the code. Thus, unit testing is often something that is cut in each project. Most of the testing effort is instead focused on integration testing after the software is complete. However, this all-too common approach results in applications spending too long in the first round of integration testing because bugs unrelated to integration must be resolved. And if the bugs aren't caught during integration testing, they might surface during maintenance--and a fix at that time might actually break an existing application. Fortunately, software developers are beginning to implement better testing approaches. For starters, some developers now follow a test-based development model. Just as there are developers who start the development process with Use cases or Joint Application Design (JAD) sessions (which involve end users), these developers start by defining a set of tests, then use that test set to develop software. This description is an oversimplification of the process. If you want to learn more about this model, go to http://lists.sqlmag.com/t?ctl=35C23:7F5CF8 . I subscribe to a different model in which software design includes, in most cases, test planning. I still find that most companies are surprised when I ask to have members of the testing team participate in late-stage design discussions. The idea is that testers in the room will be less interested in what a feature should do than how they'll determine whether it's broken. Thus, testers tend to ask a lot of What if? questions. When captured, these questions result in requirements and design specifications that are much more detailed. The testers aren't focusing on what features they want but rather what the exceptions will need to be. Talking about testing is good, but using tools to help automate the process is even better. Some organizations have begun to develop automated test tools. A good example is NUnit ( http://lists.sqlmag.com/t?ctl=35C24:7F5CF8 ). NUnit is freeware designed to automate the testing of .NET applications. Microsoft has also developed automated test tools for testing its own

In this case, my computer-illiterate client needed a recommendation for image-editing software. Personally, I use Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 2 (CS2) and CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X3, neither of which I'd recommend to this client, who didn't plan to spend the time necessary to master the applications. Before describing the capabilities of various applications, I asked the client how he planned to use the software. He said he wanted to be able to resize the images he provided to his Webmaster for online listings, add simple captions, and do some form of marking on the images, such as circling or highlighting features. I told him he already had the tools he needed for those simple tasks: Microsoft Paint and Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Microsoft Paint isn't a full-fledged editing tool, but it works well for the simple task of adding text or drawing lines. It has no trouble loading the JPEG images produced by point-and- shoot cameras, regardless of resolution, and it easily saves modified copies of the images. For resizing, I showed him how to use Microsoft Office Picture Manager, which is part of Microsoft Office 2003. For his purposes it was perfect, as he could select all of the pictures in a folder and resize them to the same dimensions. The application offers the additional advantage of basic image editing capabilities, which I showed him how to use to make the pictures he was modifying look better. At some point he might decide he needs a more comprehensive image-management application, but between Paint and Picture Manager he was able to achieve the results he needed without buying an additional piece of software and dealing with the learning curve required to master it. In SharePoint and Public Folders, Part 1 (July 27, 2006, InstantDoc ID 92930), I talk about some of the differences between Exchange public folders and SharePoint. Now I want to talk about some of the tools that you can use to migrate public folder data. The first thing you should know is that Microsoft itself isn't making any public folder migration tools available yet. I think this is a mistake, but that's the way it is: To my knowledge, neither the Exchange nor SharePoint team will deliver migration capability with its product's release to manufacturing. Of course, there's no time pressure for them to do so, because public folders will continue to exist and be supported until the end of the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 product life cycle in 2016 or 2017. However, a fertile market of SharePoint migration tools already exists. Several ISVs make tools to migrate IBM Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino data to SharePoint; for example, Metalogix Software offers Migration Manager 3.0 For SharePoint Products and Technologies and Tzunami offers Tzunami Deployer. The overall process of migrating messaging and calendaring data from Exchange or Domino to SharePoint is actually quite similar, so it's no surprise that both Tzunami and Metalogix have adapted their tools to migrate public folder data in advance of the 2007 Microsoft Office system release. The better news is that Quest Software, a long-time leader in the migration world, has announced its SharePoint migration tool. Although the final details of availability and pricing haven't been announced yet, Quest is showing demos of its tool, and I'm impressed with what I've seen. The basic idea behind the tool is that it can pull content from a set of public folders and either move it to or synchronize it with SharePoint sites. A variety of scheduling, configuration, and control options let you decide what gets migrated, where it goes, and who has access to the migrated content. I'll review the tool after Quest makes a beta release available. There are still some unanswered questions about how migrations will work in practice. For example, many organizations use public contact folders, and it isn't clear how workflows that depend on synchronizing contact information with mobile devices might have to change. Some desktop applications might require changes as well. Companies that depend on public folders' native replication capability face the question of whether to move their data to SharePoint, giving up replication in favor of SharePoint's integration and ubiquitous access features. The whole migration field is still evolving, and because both SharePoint 2007 and Exchange 2007 are some time away from release, I expect to see further development of the associated migration products. In the meantime, if your organization is using public folders now, I'd like to hear what your concerns are and what you think of Microsoft's migration strategy. ++ Sponsor: EMC Help your small- or medium-sized business protect one of its most valuable assets--business information. Here's the challenge: Jeff is a database developer who needs to develop an application that keeps track of Unicode strings in a database table. The Unicode strings are 40 characters long and include trailing blanks, which are significant for comparison purposes when looking up specific values in the table. Jeff uses the pubs sample database and creates the test table and data by using the following T-SQL batches: USE pubs GO SELECT identity(int) AS id, CAST(au_lname AS nvarchar(40)) AS name1, CAST(au_fname AS nvarchar(20)) AS name2 INTO _a FROM dbo.authors GO CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX idx__a_name ON _a(name1) GO INSERT INTO _a VALUES(N'Test Name 1 ', N'Test Name 1') INSERT INTO _a VALUES(N'Test Name 1', N'Test Name 1') INSERT INTO _a SELECT a1.name1, a1.name2 FROM _a a1, _a a2 GO To test how he can look up specific items using the name1 column from the table, Jeff writes the following simple query: DECLARE @n nvarchar(40) SET @n = N'Test Name 1 ' SELECT *, datalength(name1) FROM _a WHERE name1 = @n GO But the query doesn't give the results he expected; Jeff gets the entries with and without trailing blanks. For the sample data shown, the query returns rows that have name1 as Test Name 1 without a trailing blank and Test Name 1 with a trailing blank. However, Jeff expects the equality operator to perform an exact match thereby returning only the row with name1 as Test Name 1. What is the flaw in the query? Why doesn't the equality operator consider the blanks significant? And how can Jeff modify the query so that he gets the expected results efficiently? Storage Viewpoint: Tandberg Data Wraps NAS, Backup Technologies into One Solution by David Chernicoff, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Over the last year, I've talked quite a bit about the availability of online, nearline, and offline backup solutions and the different advantages these solutions bring to the business user. I get a fair amount of email from readers asking for more information about the various solutions I've mentioned in this commentary, but recently I've been getting more questions about the availability of out-of-the-box solutions that combine the multiple technologies I've discussed. Smaller businesses are looking to do the same sort of online to nearline to offline data protection that's regularly practiced in large corporate environments. But smaller enterprises have held off acquiring the combination of technologies that can make their data easily available and provide good data protection and security at an affordable cost. Such firms are hesitant to acquire data-protection technologies because they worry about how to make the different technologies work together reliably as well as the data protection solution's complexity and potential maintenance difficulties. This is the market segment that Tandberg Data has targeted with its InteliStor network backup appliance. This Windows Storage Server (WSS) 2003-based appliance combines NAS and tape-backup hardware (LTO-2) with easy-to-use backup software to provide what Tandberg Data markets as a turnkey data-security and backup device with minimal requirements for IT support. On the surface, the marketing claims for InteliStor would appear to be true. To use InteliStor as a basic network backup device, you need to do only a little work to set it up. The included Symantec Backup Exec software is well known and easy to use, and IT support can easily develop procedures to make sure that the backup tapes are rotated properly. Getting InteliStor up and running took me less than half an hour from start to finish, and the system was ready to start providing data protection to any data on my network that I wanted to replicate to the WSS 2003 component of the InteliStor appliance. A lot of the ease of InteliStor setup was because of my experience with Windows Server and WSS 2003, but for any administrator with a basic knowledge of Windows Server, getting the InteliStor up and running isn't a complex proposition. While researching InteliStor, I noticed that other reviewers had commented on the increased complexity when using InteliStor to provide backup to Microsoft Exchange Server or Microsoft SQL Server installations. Curiously, the reviewers seemed to feel that this increased need for attention and management was a negative part of the InteliStor concept. However, I disagree. The basic InteliStor concept is a sound one: Provide a good NAS and backup solution that works well together and with Windows Server networks. It's unsurprising that adding the requirement to back up email and/or database servers increases the complexity of the equation and brings with it a requirement for more IT support. Both Exchange and SQL Server have their own management requirements. When you add those applications to the backup and data-protection

This extra, monthly edition of Security UPDATE lets you know about resources and events that can help you keep your security knowledge and skills up to date and keep your Windows and other systems secure. === SECURITY QA === by Randy Franklin Smith, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Preventing Users from Disabling a Screen Saver Q: How can I prevent my users from disabling the password-protected screensaver that I configure when setting up new systems? A: If your computers and user accounts are part of an Active Directory (AD) domain, you can use one Group Policy Object (GPO) to deploy a policy to all your users that prevents them from disabling the screen saver. If you don't use AD, you'll need to configure the setting in the local GPO of each computer. Whether editing a GPO in AD or a computer's local GPO, maneuver to the User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Display folder in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Group Policy Object Editor and enable the Hide Screen Saver tab policy. Now when users open the Display applet in Control Panel, the Screen Saver tab just won't be there for them to access. Note that the Display folder also contains other policies that enable you to configure the screen saver itself as well as its timeout value and other parameters. Download this FREE Comparison Paper now: http://list.windowsitpro.com/t?ctl=3401D:7F5CF7 IN THE NEWS Microsoft Renames IE 7 in Vista ... Again by Paul Thurrott, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Microsoft's attempt to differentiate the version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 7 that will ship with Windows Vista has been met with derision, disbelief, and displeasure. The software giant has listened to the complaints and has decided it won't use the IE 7+ moniker it had previously announced. We planned to call the version of IE 7 in Windows Vista 'Internet Explorer 7+', Tony Chor, group program manager for IE, wrote in the IE blog late last week. The feedback we got on the blog was overwhelming [and] many of you didn't like it. So, as we've said on our Web site, we heard you. I'm pleased to announce that we're switching the name back to 'Internet Explorer 7.' No plus. No dot x. Just 'Internet Explorer 7.' If only it were that simple. In keeping with its recent decision to grace every bit of code that appears in Windows with the word Windows, Microsoft is renaming the versions of IE 7 for Windows XP and Windows Vista with bizarre, lengthy names that actually use the word Windows twice in each name. So, Microsoft will call the standalone version of IE 7 (the version that works with XP as well as Windows Server 2003 and XP x64) Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP, and it will call the Vista version Windows Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista. In addition to the in-your-face usage of the word Windows in both names, there's a subtle difference in the use of prepositions in the names themselves. The standalone IE 7 version is for Windows XP, whereas the version that will ship with Vista is referred to as in Windows Vista, obviously to denote that IE 7 is, in fact, an integrated part of Vista. Haven't we moved beyond this naming nonsense yet? Editors' Note Take the Windows IT Pro Salary Survey! We need your help! Commentary An Instance of Understanding by Michael Otey User Instances is a feature that makes SQL Server 2005 Express different from other SQL Server editions. Before I explain User Instances, you need to understand that a SQL Server instance is essentially an in-memory occurrence of the sqlservr.exe executable program. Different SQL Server editions support different numbers of instances. For example, the SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition supports 50 instances, and the SQL Server 2005 Standard, Workgroup, and Express editions each support 16 instances. Each instance runs separately and has its own set of databases that aren't shared by any other instance. Client applications connect to each instance by using the instance name. Typically, the first SQL Server instance you install becomes the default instance. The default instance uses the name of the computer on which it's installed. You can assign a name to subsequent instance installations, so they're called named instances. During the installation process, you can assign any name to a named instance. Client applications that want to connect to an instance use the DefaultServerName\InstanceName convention. For example, if the default instance name is SQLServer1 and the instance name is MyInstance, the client application would connect to the named instance by using the server name SQLServer1\MyInstance. As with the other SQL Server editions, SQL Server Express supports the default instance and named instances, but SQL Server Express uses SQLExpress as the default instance name rather than the name of the computer system. In addition to regular SQL Server instances, SQL Server Express also supports User Instances. User instances are similar to named instances, but SQL Server Express creates user instances dynamically, and these instances have different limitations. When you install SQL Server Express, you have the option of enabling User Instances. By default, User Instances aren't enabled. After installation, you can enter the sp_configure command in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) or the sqlcmd tool by using the following syntax: sp_configure 'user instances enabled','1' To disable User Instance support, replace 1 with a 0 in the sp_configure command. User Instances were designed to make deploying databases along with applications easier. User Instances let users create a database instance on demand even if they don't have administrative rights. To utilize User Instances, the application's connection string needs to use the attachdbfilename and user instance keywords as follows: Data Source=.\SQLExpress;integrated security=true; attachdbfilename=MyDataDirectory\MyDatabase.mdf;user instance=true; When an application opens a connection to a SQL Server Express database in which User Instances are enabled and the application uses the attachdbfilename and user instance keywords, SQL Server Express copies the master and msdb databases to the user's directory. SQL Server Express starts a new instance of the sqlserver.exe program and SQL Server Express attaches the database named in the attachdbfilename keyword to the new instance. Unlike common SQL Server instances, SQL Server Express User Instances have some limitations. User
