xvmount_3.6-5 uploaded to master

1997-11-20 Thread Volker Ossenkopf
I have uploaded version 3.6-5 of my xvmount package to master.

It fixes the security hole (#15029) which could enable normal
users to change the permissions of /etc/mtab by means of xvmount.

Here comes the signed changes file:

xvmount_3.6-2 uploaded to master

1997-03-19 Thread Volker Ossenkopf
I have uploaded the corrected package xvmount_3.6-2
to master. It should appear in unstable as soon as
it is moved automatically out of Incoming.

Users of the previous package xvmount_3.6-1 should
upgrade as soon as possible since the old version
contains a security hole which allows normal users
to gain root access.

Re: Is there a WorkMan deb?

Riku Saikkonen wrote:
I like WorkMan too, except for the fact that it uses the XView libraries
(which wouldn't be so bad if something else used them too, but it's kind of
a waste to have them for just one small program). I haven't seen WorkMan in
the Debian distribution, though -- maybe someone should package it?

Workman has bee available as Debian package in the
experimental section since December 1996. Probably,
I should not have put it into experimental since
almost nobody looks into this section so that I even
did not get back any bug-reports. But I was not very
sure that I collected everything right. Probably, I
should ask Bruce to put the package now into unstable
instead.

we have olvwm in your debian box and we would be able to use the F keys
(F1,F2,etc) to emulate the keys front, open, cut, copy, paste, help on a SUN
keyboard. I think that i must edit the .Xmodmap file but i don't known
what i must write in it.

Since I need F1 to 10 for the mc, I have put the four most important
SUN keys to F11 and F12:

.Xmodmap:
! F1=Help (move pointer on panel, press F1 to show help on the item)
! F19=Find (after having selected some text, press F2 to do a search)
! F20=Cut (select text, press F3 to move text into clipboard)
! F16=Copy (select text, press F4 to copy text into clipboard)
! F18=Paste (insert text from clipboard at caret position)
!
keycode 0x5F = F20 F20 F19 F19
keycode 0x60 = F18 F18 F16 F16

This means F11=Cut, Alt-F11=Find, F12=Paste, Alt-F12=Copy.
All SUN keys are recognized as F15 to F25 so you can address them in a
similar
way.

This is not generally true. It depends on your TERM.
You need libgpm when running mc at the console with mouse support.
Using a terminfo which does not suggest mouse support should
make mc running as well on the console without the mouse.

Anyway you do not need libgpm in an X environment.

The solution running here is:
1) /, /etc, /var in one partition locally on each machine. Configuration
is still too machine dependent.
2) /usr mounted via NFS. The disk really hosting the /usr files is
a DEC-Alpha but each Linux machine could serve as well.
3) /usr/local is a symbolic link to /local on each machine. Here, machine
specific applications are stored. They should not be touched by
Debian packages.

Due to the strict separation between configuration files and
programs in Debian, this works quite well. All programs except
for those installed in /usr/local have to be maintained only
centrally. The netload due to the program loading on execution
is still relatively small compared to the load produced by
the real data which are also often treated via NFSi here.

Hope this helps.

The xview-clients package is broken. To get correct results on hicolor

slackware or any other distribution. There, this problem was corrected

Where is pgp?

1996-10-14 Thread Volker Ossenkopf
In an old package list, I have copied in August, the debian
pgp packages (US and international) were in non-free.

Nowadays, there does not seem to be any pgp package available.
I have scanned the ls-lRs at Debian and some mirrors, but
NO pgp.

I desperately need pgp since I have created some new
debian packages (xvmount and xcolorsel) but I cannot
submit them without pgping them (until now I never saw
a real reason for pgp signing or encrypting anything.).

Where can I find the debian pgp packages now?

Hoping for help -- Volker

: From: Arrigo Triulzi [EMAIL PROTECTED]
: Hello,

: sorry for writing to you direct but this is urgent: it seems
: that under the Debian X11 installation it is impossible to reboot the
: machine at the Xlogin prompt under xdm. I know this is a Good Idea
: (tm) but we are running dual-boot systems and this is a requirement so
: that students can switch back to DOS when then need.
:
: Basically, if we can't find a way of doing this we have to
: remove Linux and we lose the chance of introducing it into the Dept.
:
: Please let me know if you have any idea on how to get C-A-Del
: to work at the Xlogin prompt under xdm. I have checked the HOWTO's but
: to no avail.

We use the following solution here:
1. Creat a user shutdown or reboot.
2. Give him a password.
3. Change /etc/passwd so that a) his user id is equal to root,
b) his home directory is some safe place
c) his default shell is /sbin/sysdown
4. sysdown has to be a script that calls shutdown, e.g.
  #!/bin/sh
  /sbin/shutdown -h now
5. create a file .xsession.linux in his home directory which calls sysdown.

Attention! In this solution, everybody who knows the shutdown-passwd
can shutdown the machine even from a remote system.

Hope this meets your needs.

How to debianize packages?

1996-08-15 Thread Volker Ossenkopf
I have become more or less convinced to switch to Debian 1.1
in the next large update of my system in the next weeks.

However, until now I have not yet found an answer on how to handle
all those non-standard packages like pgplot, wip, vile and
the hundreds of other tools which are not available as debian
packages but simply as tar.gz archives. To maintain a well
organized system I would like to install them with the
Debian package installation tools and not by hand or at least
to register them when being installed as debian packages.

To focus the problem: How do I convert tar.gz archives (when
no installation scripts are needed) into debian packages?
How do I create a debian archive from installed files ?

Any help appreciated.

Best wishes -- Volker
