New Gnome in debian/testing - how to find details of program shown as an icon in "Programs"?
Hi, I'm still confused after the old good Gnome in my laptop got upgraded today... When I click "Programs" on the desktop I can see a lot of icons corresponding to different programs. Unfortunately names of some programms are too long to be fully displayed. In the previous version of Gnome interface I was able at least to find the full path of the executable associated with any icon. In the new version, if I click with the right button, I have only two options: "New window" or "Add to favorites" (options translated from Polish). There is no way to find which program is run by the particular icon :-(. Is there any "advanced view" available in the new interface? -- Regards, Wojtek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Crazy (?) idea: screen locker with simpler password
Hi, I often have to leave my students with my laptop and e.g. go to scan some documents or to receive printed papers from the printer room. Then I have to lock the console when leaving, and unlock it when coming back. As my login password is quite long, it is uncomfortable to enter it (especially with my students watching my keyboard ;-) ) after every return. I think it could be nice to have a possibility to use a special configuration of screen-locker, using another, shorter and simpler password... Well I have a quick&dirty workaround - I have a special account with minimal privileges (e.g. with access to networked blocked in iptables) and really simple password. I have this user logged in in one text console. So when leaving, I can switch to this console (with Alt+Ctrl+F1) and run "vlock -a". This is not very elegant, but working... Unfortunately my VFS5011 fingerprint scanner is not supported in Linux :-(. -- Regards, Wojtek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Re: Network Manager in Debian and modem with non-standard init strings
You mean that Empathy cannot recognize there is a network connection in place when you use wvdial? :-? That sounds to me like a very big limitation or even a bug... let me do a quick search. Yes, I think so too, however similar behaviour presents also the evolution - when started only with a connection established via pon, it starts in the off-line mode, promissing to go on-line as soon as network connection is set up. Ah... look: Empathy for WVDIAL users http://reliancewireless.wordpress.com/2010/03/27/empathy-for-wvdial-users/ Maybe that workaround also works for you :-) Well, unfortunately I have no use_conn checkbox in gconf-editor for empathy. You are very lucky. I could *never* get it to boot even once: http://bugs.debian.org/644174 Well, I didn't try to use debian/stable. I switched to debian/testing in 1999 (If I remember correctly). Re: Debian 64-bit an Dell Vostro 3750 - freezes sometimes with message [Firmware Bug] ACPI(PEGP) dedefines _DOD but not _DOS
Well, I have seriously mistaken in my first message. The problem is not related to the video adapter. The correlation with connection of USB devices was also incorrectly interpreted. When I connected the second device I simply used one of USB 3.0 jacks. When I run into troubles when connecting single USB devices - it was also when I randomly used one of two USB 3.0 jacks... Now I have both mentioned in the first message USB devices plugged into USB 2.0 jack and into the SATA/USB 2.0 combo jack and everything works perfectly! Debian 64-bit an Dell Vostro 3750 - freezes sometimes with message [Firmware Bug] ACPI(PEGP) dedefines _DOD but not _DOS
Hi, I have strange problem with my Dell Vostro 3750 (two graphic adapters: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 0df5 (rev a1) ) When booting the Linux OS (tried kernel 3.0.0 and 3.0.1) I often get system frozen during the boot. The last line on the screen states: [Firmware Bug] ACPI(PEGP) defines _DOD but not _DOS The strangest thing is that connecting of any device to the USB jack highly increases the probability of that problem. Without any USB devices probability of success is almost 100%. With one USB device - GSM/UMTS modem - boot succeeds in ca 50% When I additionally connect the UGM-96 guitar sound card - boot almost never completes. Both devices work perfectly when plugged in after boot. It seems, that there is a race condition during the boot, and connection of USB device increases the time window in which the problem may appear. I saw similar problem reported by others (it is enough to enter "[Firmware Bug] ACPI(PEGP) defines _DOD but not _DOS" in google) but no good solution (booting with acpi=off is not a good idea when machine has 4 HT cores and usually at least 3 of them are really hard working ;-) ). Most reports mention the Dell Vostro 3750 - so maybe the problem is associated with a bug in the BIOS (I use the newest version A05 - downloaded from Dell and flashed. Before the BIOS upgrade situation was similar ). However now, after the upgrade sometimes I receive the series of errors: QUOTING FROM /var/log/syslog Jun 21 19:42:36 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } Jun 21 19:42:36 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } Jun 21 19:42:36 wzab kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 03:41 (hdb), sector 152202 Jun 21 19:42:36 wzab kernel: Directory sread (sector 0x2528a) failed Jun 21 19:42:37 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } Jun 21 19:42:37 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } Jun 21 19:42:41 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } Jun 21 19:42:41 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } Jun 21 19:42:42 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } Jun 21 19:42:42 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } Jun 21 19:42:44 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } Jun 21 19:42:44 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } Jun 21 19:42:44 wzab kernel: ide0: reset: success Jun 21 19:42:45 wzab kernel: hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } * END OF QUOTE and the machine slows down (in fact almost freezes). ogonkify does not process correctly the XFig files in potato?
Hi All, It seems to me that ogonkify does not process correctly the xfig files in potato. If I have a myfile.fig and process it with: fig2dev -L eps myfile.fig | ogonkify -F -ATH > myfile.eps The resulting eps still contains the iso-8859-1 characters instaed of iso-8859-2. Has anybody solved it? -- TIA Wojtek Zabolotny [EMAIL PROTECTED]
How to make iso8859-2 fonts the default ones in X? (and the "dirty" solution...)
Hi All, In the old good slink, there was xfntil2 package (or something like this) which installed the iso-8859-2 fonts in the /usr/lib/X11/fonts/*-il2 dirs. So I could just add this dirs on the begining of the FontPath in the XF86Config, so that these fonts were defaults. It was very usefull for such i18n-dumb applications like xfig, siag and many others. Unfortunately in potato the xfonts-intl-european package, places all fonts in the /usr/lib/X11/fonts/* dirs, so it is impossible to use the old good trick. I have one idea how can it be done, but this is very dirty trick. I'm going to create the /usr/local/xfonts-il2/* directories (* stands for 75dpi 100dpi and so on...) and symlink all iso-8859-2 fonts into the appropriate directories (probably it can be done with a perl script, maybe someone knows about such a beast ready for use? otherwise I'll have to write it by my own). Then of course I'll call the mkfontdir for these new dirs. In the XF86Config I'll add these new dirs on the begining of the FontPath. Does anybody knows the better solution? -- TIA Wojtek Zabolotny [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Problem with "allow_localhost" in exim (SSL relaying from trusted DIP connected hosts)
Hi All, I've finally got the "almost working" configuration for relaying of messages from trusted hosts connected through untrusted dial-up ISPs. On my box, I've created the SSL tunnel with following command: stunnel -v 2 -d localhost:465 -r localhost:25 On each DIP connected box, I've modified the two files: 1) /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/exim #!/bin/sh stunnel -c stunnel -c -p /etc/ssl/certs/valid_certificate.pem \ -d localhost:465 -r my.host.name:465 # Flush exim queue if [ -x /usr/sbin/exim ]; then /usr/sbin/exim -qf fi 2) /etc/exim.conf a) I've created the new transport definition my_smtp: driver = smtp port = 465 allow_localhost = true b) I've changed the smarthost definition smarthost: driver = domainlist # transport = remote_smtp # route_list = "* my.host.name bydns_a" transport = my_smtp route_list = "* localhost byname" In theory all should work fine (I tried to connect with telnet to the 465 port on the DIP connected box, and it really worked with exim on my.host.name, the certificate checking worked and so on). However exim on connected boxes fails to deliver the mail ("freezes" it), and complains to the postmaster, sending the following info: The following address(es) have yet to be delivered: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: remote host address is the local host AFAIK this should be fixed with the "allow_localhost = true" in the my_smtp transport definition, however it doesn't work (I get strictly the same results without this option and with it). What have I done wrong? Do I need to recompile exim to allow supporting of "allow_localhost = true" option? -- TIA Wojtek Zabolotny [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: How to set up exim in potato for relaying messages sent by ssmtp (from SSL certified hosts)?
Hi All, I need to setup my box for relaying messages forwarded from trusted computers connected through different untrusted DIPs. My idea is to establish an SSL tunnel between SMTP and SSMTP ports on my box, available only for hosts presenting the valid certificate (provided by "my private CA"). It can be done with something like this: stunnel -c stunnel -c -v 2 -d 465 -r 25 However I don't know how to tell exim to relay the messages received by ssmtp? -- TIA & Greetings Wojciech Zabolotny [EMAIL PROTECTED]
masqmail - really a good & safe solution for DIP connected box?
Hi All, I have to set up the reliable MTA for my home network. I use my own DNS system with "unofficial" domain name. The mail is transferred to the Internet by different dialup ISP. The problem is however, that the providers' smarthosts complain about the sender's hostname (because it contains my "unofficial" domain name), and this results sometimes in rejection of my message at the adressee's mail server. (See the headers in this message, to find what is the problem ;-) ) Therefore I need to forge the mail headers, to make them "reasonable" for different DIPs. I've heard that masqmail is suitable for such purpose, but its version number (0.0.12) makes me a little afraid of it ;-). Does anybody has any experiences with this beast? -- TIA Wojciech Zabolotny [EMAIL PROTECTED]
HELP! Bash 2.01 for bo?
Hi! I'm looking for bash 2.01 for bo (1.3.1). Preferrably the source version. I'd like to be able to use the Netscape's helpers [Netscape uses the ((command ); command) syntax which is treated by bash as corrupted arithmetic expression], but I don't want to upgrade to hamm. Re: Problems with gs-aladdin_5.10-3
Sorry for unnecessary fuss. I've just solved the problem. It was necessary to untar the gs-aladdin_5.10.orig.tar.gz manually, cut the ".orig" extension from the directory name, create the debian and contrib subdirectories, apply the diff maually, set exec permissions for debian/rules and debian/addentry, and finally build the package. Now I have a working gs-aladdin_5.10-3 in bo :-). Re: AZTECH 2320 PnP sound card howto ?
Hi, Im using with success AZTECH 2320 PnP (WaveRider Pro 32-3D PnP) sound cards in my two Linux boxes (with "bo" and kernel 2.0.30, and 2.0.32). However configuring of them was not so easy, and required changes in the kernel... :-(. Problem with LaTeX in debian ?
Hi all! I'm sorry if my problem is rather LaTeX, not debian specific... Last time I unfortunately stopped LaTeX, when it was running MakeTeXTFM. When I ran it again later, I received series of messages, that some characters are unavailable in this particular font, which was generated when I stopped MakeTeXTFM. In the resulting dvi or ps file some characters were lacking. Certainly the font was broken, and I was unable to fix it. Is there any possibility to force LaTeX to clear all fonts? I couldn't find any information about it... Thank you in advance Wojtek Zabolotny [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: configuring return address on outgoing mail
I don't know how to do it in smail, but I had the same problem, and fixed it by configuring pine: user-domain = ipe.pw.edu.pl The smail configuration is unchanged. It is not the best solution, because it requires, that my username on my computer has to be the same as the name of my mailbox. Anyway it works! Some remarks: Interrupts and serial ports
Hi all! I've read a discussion about serial ports and interrupts and still have some doubts. WHY KERNEL'S SERIAL DRIVER IS WRITTEN IN THIS WAY THAT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO SHARE INTERRUPTS? >From the hardware point of view it should be quite possible. The interrupt line is driven by a three-state buffer, so it is impossible to use two serial ports with the same interrupt simultaneously, but it should be possible to use them by turns. When program wants to open a serial device, driver should check the status of the appropriate interrupt line, and open it only if the line is not used by other devices. It is possible to arrange it that way by slight changes in the serial driver (Well, I know that if it's so easy I should propose the concrete solution, but at the moment I really have no time to experiment with the kernel). What could it be used for? Just for example: In my home computer I have four serial ports - two integrated with the motherboard (used for mouse and modem), and two located on the Multi-IO board (used for interface for my Casio organizer and EVM 56002 DSP evaluation board). I may not sacrifice more than two (3 and 4) interrupts for serial ports, because all other interrupts are already used by other hardware. I usually use the mouse and ONE of the other devices, so I would like to use mouse with COM1/IRQ3, modem with COM2/IRQ4, CASIO with COM3/IRQ4 and EVM with COM4/IRQ4. Well, one may say that I could get exactly the same by using only two serial ports with a switch ('multiplexer'), but it would be more expensive, would increase amount of cables around my computer, and would require to operate the switch manually when I change the device. So I think it would be useful to change serial driver that way. If there are other people interested in it, I would like to discuss with them this problem. Wojtek Zabolotny [EMAIL PROTECTED] PS. IN FACT IT IS A PROBLEM WITH BRAIN-DEAD PC ARCHITECTURE. THERE SHOULD BE ONE ONLY INTERRUPT LINE USED BY ALL SERIAL PORTS. THE INTERRUPT LINES IN ISA SLOT SHOULD BE ACTIVATED WITH "0" LEVEL, AND ALL SERIAL CARDS SHOULD HAVE OPEN DRAIN OUTPUT. CHECKING AFTER THE INTERRUPT, WHICH SERIAL PORT CAUSED IT, CAN BE FAST ENOUGH... -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Probably you should use GhostScript to rasterize the ps file (gs -sDEVICE=pgm or ppm, or something like this), and then cjpeg to convert it into jpeg. If you have any command line utility to convert rasterized formats produced by gs (use gs --help to get information what formats does it support) into gif, then you can get the gif file.
