java plugin, is does it have any security vulnerabilities ?
Hi All, i am running Debian stable (squeeze) and have java installed 6.26-osqueeze1 as a package. Firefox uses this package but when I asked it to check if plugins are up to date it says nope, need version 7... So am I right in thinking that v6.26 is old (and thus the advice to upgrade to 7) but does not have any known security vulnerabilities because it is part of stable ? Or have I missed something ? Do I need both ? If I ask for -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-110-100-100-*-*-iso8859-1 but there are only 10 and 12 point Helvetica fonts in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi (I asked for 11.0 point), the :unscaled version won't return a font at all, but the not-unscaled one will try to scale one or the other to the requested size. This is bad with bitmapped fonts, since you don't wind up with smooth edges (or even consistent-width lines, often). Also if I have the 100dpi versions, is there any advantage to having the 75dpi versions, are these just less memory intensive versions of the same thing ? It's not memory, it's how big your screen is. Try this exercise: take the horizontal resolution of your display, divide by .8, and divide again by the diagonal size of your monitor in inches. If this number is closer to 75, the 75dpi fonts are closer to accurate for you; if it's closer to 100, the 100dpi fonts are better. In any case you can be happy with scalable (Type 1 or TrueType) fonts. Happiness here is relative, too, it's really how much you care about a 12 point font being exactly 1/6 inch tall. (It turns out that X does have a concept of display pitch, and 'xdpyinfo' will tell you this, among many other things. The last time I looked at an X server source, though, X would only hand out 75 or 100 dpi fonts unless you asked really nicely [e.g., with explicit resolutions in the font name]; modern XFree86 might be different. I think the newer font-rendering libraries try to use the reported display resolution. Getting this sort of thing right can be tricky, but as I understand it, the Unix world has a lot more hope than Windows...) Many thanks for helping to clear things up, it starts to make a bit more sense ... Do you know of a web page where I can read up in more detail ? temp reducing number of fonts, xfs in way?
Im having a great time with fonts at present !! My aim is to reduce the number of default font directories so when using gimp I am not swamped with fonts. Can someone clarify a point with me ... when X boots it reads the font path from /etc/X11/XF86-config, in my case Section Files FontPathunix/:7101# true type server FontPathunix/:7100# local font server # if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi EndSection this can be viewed with xset -q If I want to tempory reduce the number of fonts on offer I would use xset -fp /usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic xset fp rehash when I next do a xset -q I find that cyrillic has gone, all good however the font is still avalible. Is this because at the start of XF86config-4 it accesses xfs via unix/:7100 ? xfs looks at a config file in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config, which contains ... # paths to search for fonts catalogue = /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled, /usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/, /usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/freefonts/ so am I right in thinking that server unix:/7100 will find the fonts anyway regardless of what I do with xset -fp ? BTW, I am using another printer (a HP 960C), so I cannot help you with things specific to your printerjust general info. Your Epson C60 is listed on my list of supported printers under both CUPS and GIMP here. Was it listed when you setup CUPS? You might try re-installing the cupsys-driver-gimpprint package and re-configuring your CUPS setup, if you haven't done this already. I use the Printing Manager wizard under KDE for all my CUPS config work rather than the web-browser interface, but that shouldn't matter. lpr -PepsonC60_photo to make it print, having setup epsonC60_photo via cups as a photoquality mode. However to change resolution or media type I have to keep going into CUPS and modifying the printed setup for epsonC60_photo. One method I use here to keep from going into CUPS to re-configure for various printing modes is to pre-define the various modes I want to use in CUPS. Although you have only one printer, you CAN define it in various ways under CUPS. For example, I want a general-purpose printer for text printing, I config LP-Text for black white only. I then define a second printer under CUPS for low-res color work as LP-Color, and a third as LP-Photo for photo-quality work. You can extend this as far as you want/need. Some apps will automatically select the mode they want...GIMP appears to do this for me. On most apps, I then have 3 printers to choose to use...LP-Text, LP-Color, and LP-Photo. I select one of these as the system default for the most common printing tasks. I have dpkg-reconfigure gimp1.2 in the hope it will pick up the later added gimp print but to no avail. Has this gotsomething to do with a PPD file, is this a printer driver file ? Failing this is there some other way to get gimp to see what is avalible via CUPS ? One final thought... do you have BOTH the gimp 1.2 and the gimp 1.2-print packages installed?? I have both here in addition to the cupsys-driver-gimpprint package. If you want to compare setups (packages) and procedures further, just holler. That is about the only other thing I can think about doing. Cheers, -Don Spoon- AAAH Sweet Sweet success !! This spec is needed for 2-way communications between the printer and computer via the parallel port. The most common mistake is not using an IEEE-1284 rated connecting cable. Highlighted in X, is there a buffer ?
When using X, you can highlight text and copy it to another area via the middle mouse button. Is there a buffer file that holds the highlighted text ? This would be very usefull for passing URLs etc to the ctrl-alt-f1 command line. Sometimes Xterm is not ideal because it ceases when the user is changed. The same goes for the GUI ! I ran fsck -A, all ok it corrected loads, maybe 20 inodes then hit some ti did not seem to know what to to with. It has dumped these in the /lost+found directory. The contents of which is ... debian:/# cd lost+found/ debian:/lost+found# ls #212421 #212424 #212425 #212426 #212427 #212428 #98297 debian:/lost+found# ls -al total 40 srwxr-xr-x1 test test0 Jan 15 18:00 #212421 -rw---1 test test 168 Jan 15 18:00 #212424 -rw---1 test test 168 Jan 15 18:00 #212425 -rw---1 test test 168 Jan 15 18:00 #212426 -rw---1 test test 168 Jan 15 18:00 #212427 -rw---1 test test 168 Jan 15 18:00 #212428 srw---1 test root0 Jan 15 18:01 #98297 drwx--2 root root16384 Jan 2 17:46 . drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 4096 Jan 2 18:22 .. debian:/lost+found# I also lost my kmail accounts which I have re-enterd. Are the above lost files ? If so how do I know what is what and how do I put them back ? Can anyone point me to documentation about what is an inode, web searches for info on inodes draws a blank. I would like to know more ? As always any help gratefully appreciated Dave PS The system appears to work AOK now, even with all that has happened. In many cases your best off restoring from a backup when/if you determine you lost something of interest. I view these files much like the FILE.CHK files generated by MS Scandisk on win32 systems. nate mmm ... so wait till something doesen't work, check in var/log and figure out what to re-intsall ??
