java plugin, is does it have any security vulnerabilities ?

2012-07-14 Thread dave selby
Hi All,

i am running Debian stable (squeeze) and have java installed
6.26-osqueeze1 as a package.

Firefox uses this package but when I asked it to check if plugins are
up to date it says nope, need version 7...

So am I right in thinking that v6.26 is old (and thus the advice to
upgrade to 7) but does not have any known security vulnerabilities
because it is part of stable ?

Or have I missed something ?

Cheers

Dave

I am not sure how picks nfs is with respect to direct access of its

You can access the files directly from the server.
Direct access is always referable over NFS or any other transport
 for that matter.

You can handle that sort of thing in perl pretty easily. The syntax is
pretty similar and the performance is about the same. However you get to
use variables, conditions, loops, etc.

Further SED problem

2003-10-05 Thread Dave selby
Im may be trying to push SED to far, in which case perl has been
suggested, but here is my problem ...

For a series of html pages, I need to take the text from the title tag
and insert it where there is a xx in the document, deleting the xx. Ie
use a template, fill in the title let SED do the hard work.

My best guess so far is
/title/,//title/h
to get the text into hold space, then I hit a problem,
s will not accept the hold space as a replacement string
c\ is a block command
I have looked at h,H,g,G but I still need a substitution.

Any ideas, or is it hello perl ?

mozilla composer problem ...

2003-03-26 Thread dave selby
Im starting to use mozilla composer to generate HTML. It seems great except I
have a couple of queries ...

Having changed text in mozilla I can save AOK, once I publish the save and
the publish options grey out, when I do more changes on the text the publish
option lights up, makes sense to me, but the save option does not.

The effect, once a page is published, save to hard disk is not avalible,
apart from save as. This does not seem right ...

Am I missing something or is Mozilla 1.0 as on the DVD buggy ?

I have had some other odd behaviour, mozilla cant find file when it is
sitting there right next to a file it can find, but am unsure if it is me or
the software, still relatively early days.

Any comments greatly appreciated

GIF driver for Gimp ?

I am using gimp quite heavily, I need to save files in .GIF format but it
appears not to be supported.

I have been on the Gimp mailing list, they suggest I may need a .deb file to

Having browsed through aptitude there are a lot of files related to GIF, and
some legal stuff about not being able to compress images.

Does anyone know which .deb to install to enable .GIF on Gimp, preferible in
compress mode as well as de-compress.

I too am in need of such a plugin, but it was my understanding that the
patent held by Unisys has expired.

At least we know where to get a gimp with .GIF now !!

Do you have any more info about the patent, I want to use .GIF for commercial

 If I ask for

  -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-110-100-100-*-*-iso8859-1

but there are only 10 and 12 point Helvetica fonts in
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi (I asked for 11.0 point), the :unscaled
version won't return a font at all, but the not-unscaled one will try
to scale one or the other to the requested size. This is bad with
bitmapped fonts, since you don't wind up with smooth edges (or even
 consistent-width lines, often).

Also if I have the 100dpi versions, is there any advantage to having the
75dpi versions, are these just less memory intensive versions of the same
  thing ?

It's not memory, it's how big your screen is. Try this exercise: take
the horizontal resolution of your display, divide by .8, and divide
again by the diagonal size of your monitor in inches. If this number
is closer to 75, the 75dpi fonts are closer to accurate for you; if
it's closer to 100, the 100dpi fonts are better. In any case you can
be happy with scalable (Type 1 or TrueType) fonts. Happiness here
is relative, too, it's really how much you care about a 12 point
font being exactly 1/6 inch tall.

(It turns out that X does have a concept of display pitch, and
'xdpyinfo' will tell you this, among many other things. The last time
I looked at an X server source, though, X would only hand out 75 or
100 dpi fonts unless you asked really nicely [e.g., with explicit
resolutions in the font name]; modern XFree86 might be different. I
think the newer font-rendering libraries try to use the reported
display resolution. Getting this sort of thing right can be tricky,
but as I understand it, the Unix world has a lot more hope than
 Windows...)

Many thanks for helping to clear things up, it starts to make a bit more
sense ... Do you know of a web page where I can read up in more detail ?

 I don't know if X-Windows can update it's available fonts on-the-fly
after you re-run xfstt, but apparently, it can't or doesn't. So, restart
*just* X. I assume your setup boots directly to X-Windows and not a
console prompt. Do this: Log out of windows. Then press CRTL-ALT-F1
and then login, either as root or as a normal user. If normal user,
you'll have to 'su' to root. Determine what X display manager you're
 using (if you use Gnome, it *might* be gdm; if KDE, it *might* be kdm;
or it could be plain old xdm). Type this:

 /etc/init.d/[k,g,x]dm restart

(use k, g, or x, whichever is appropriate for your system).

 Regards
 Hall

I gave this a go, I run KDM, unfortunately no go, in fact it lost all the ttf
fonts I had installed, weird, had to re-boot anyway !! all back now.

Worth a try ... someone has suggested xset fp rehash am trying that ...

temp reducing number of fonts, xfs in way?

2003-03-13 Thread dave selby
Im having a great time with fonts at present !! My aim is to reduce the
number of default font directories so when using gimp I am not swamped with
fonts.

Can someone clarify a point with me ...

when X boots it reads the font path from /etc/X11/XF86-config, in my case

Section Files
FontPathunix/:7101# true type server
FontPathunix/:7100# local font server
# if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these
FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc
FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic
FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled
FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled
FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi
FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi
EndSection

this can be viewed with

xset -q

If I want to tempory reduce the number of fonts on offer I would use

xset -fp /usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic
xset fp rehash

when I next do a

xset -q

I find that cyrillic has gone, all good
however the font is still avalible. Is this because at the start of
XF86config-4 it accesses xfs via unix/:7100 ?

xfs looks at a config file in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config, which contains ...

# paths to search for fonts
catalogue =
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled,
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/freefonts/

so am I right in thinking that server unix:/7100 will find the fonts anyway
regardless of what I do with xset -fp ? This seems to be what is happening.

So is there any tempory way of removing font directories short of removing
them in XF86config-4 AND /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config for xfs ?

Yes, it will. If it doesn't find any, it falls back to the directories
 listed above.

them in XF86config-4 AND /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config for xfs ?

For a long time, that's what I seemingly HAD to do to get it to work the
way *I* wanted it to. That method still works for me though it may no
 longer be necessary.

 Regards
 Hall

Thanks for the confirmation, I thought I was out on a lim, You say you dont
use unix/:7101 as a server for true type yet truetype works, without the
server ? I must give this a go the less servers the better.

Also if I have the 100dpi versions, is there any advantage to having the
75dpi versions, are these just less memory intensive versions of the same
thing ?

Many thanks for any advice

2003-03-11 Thread Dave Selby
I have installed gimp print CUPS to use my epson stylus C60 printer. They
work fine and I can print at different resolutions colours.

I have now started using gimp quite heavily. When I print from gimp my epson

However to change resolution or media type I have to keep going into CUPS and
modifying the printed setup for epsonC60_photo.

I have dpkg-reconfigure gimp1.2 in the hope it will pick up the later added
gimp print but to no avail.

Has this gotsomething to do with a PPD file, is this a printer driver file ?
Failing this is there some other way to get gimp to see what is avalible via
CUPS ?

Any ideas

Hrmmm it appears something is wrong with your setup (maybe). I am
not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I am running CUPS +
CUPSYS-DRIVER-GIMPPRINT from testing here sucessfully and GIMP seems
to work OK. BTW, I am using another printer (a HP 960C), so I cannot
help you with things specific to your printerjust general info.

Your Epson C60 is listed on my list of supported printers under both
CUPS and GIMP here. Was it listed when you setup CUPS?

You might try re-installing the cupsys-driver-gimpprint package and
re-configuring your CUPS setup, if you haven't done this already. I use
the Printing Manager wizard under KDE for all my CUPS config work
rather than the web-browser interface, but that shouldn't matter.

  lpr -PepsonC60_photo

to make it print, having setup epsonC60_photo via cups as a photoquality
  mode.

However to change resolution or media type I have to keep going into CUPS
and modifying the printed setup for epsonC60_photo.

One method I use here to keep from going into CUPS to re-configure for
various printing modes is to pre-define the various modes I want to
use in CUPS. Although you have only one printer, you CAN define it in
various ways under CUPS. For example, I want a general-purpose printer
for text printing, I config LP-Text for black white only. I then
define a second printer under CUPS for low-res color work as LP-Color,
and a third as LP-Photo for photo-quality work. You can extend this
as far as you want/need. Some apps will automatically select the mode
they want...GIMP appears to do this for me.

On most apps, I then have 3 printers to choose to use...LP-Text,
LP-Color, and LP-Photo. I select one of these as the system
default for the most common printing tasks.

I have dpkg-reconfigure gimp1.2 in the hope it will pick up the later
added gimp print but to no avail.

Has this gotsomething to do with a PPD file, is this a printer driver

One final thought... do you have BOTH the gimp 1.2 and the gimp
1.2-print packages installed?? I have both here in addition to the
 cupsys-driver-gimpprint package.

If you want to compare setups (packages) and procedures further, just
holler. That is about the only other thing I can think about doing.

 Cheers,
 -Don Spoon-

AAAH Sweet Sweet success !!
Thank you so much ... I had gimp 1.2 but not gimp1.2-print, this is what I
needed

I can now access all my dpi, media size etc from gimp

works only for apps that use Krinter for printing, afaik mostly the KDE

On some systems (of which mine is one) it it not possible, because the
email delivery process isn't allowed to suid root, to deliver mail to
root. I really have no idea what would happen to it.

The solution is to set an email alias for root to a genuine mortal.

OK this is real usefull, thanks to everyone, Ive got something to work on now

No, that means that mail to the 'mail' user is delivered to root. Is

At a guess something in /etc/cron.weekly/* is causing the trouble.

That just calls the scripts in /etc/cron.weekly and others. Check all

do I need to do something with the crontab command ??

*Any* output from a crontab command is simply mailed to the owner of
the crontab. In this case it looks like root.

Why would mail access the network? Will diald start if you simply
send a mail message? From the local user to the local user?
Something does not seem right there. Perhaps it is configured for DNS
to the net and therefore is spawning to look up a hostname? Perhaps
you have a smarthost configured and it is forwarding? Just guesses.

If that is the problem then you will need to deduce ways around the
problem. It is normal for some crontabs to generate output which
needs to be mailed. You won't want to completely prevent that.

 Bob

mmm .. me thinks me is on the edge of my knolledge here. My dial on demand
links to the web if it does not recognise a web or email address. This works
AOK

To my understanding when /etc/cron.weekly is executed it obviously has
something to report, doesnt know the email address where it is supposed to
send it so dials the web ?

I guess my first step is to check to see if root has mail from cron.weekly,
because i set MAILTO=root ...

Anybody know where roots mail is kept ?

If you could let me know that, I will do more research and get back to you

poff is a shell script. setuid scripts are massive security holes, so
the kernel refuses to honour the set{g,u}id bit on them.

Does SUID only apply to the called process and not any secondary
  processes ?

The elevated permissions would be passed along, except that, as I said
above, the kernel isn't letting the script even start with setuid. My
suggestion would be to use sudo for this, since it lets you have very
 tightly controlled permissions.

I need an application that will warn me when an event is comming up, and if I

then issues an error message, re-tries,re-tries etc etc etc. I have enabled

There may be a firewall between you and the FTP server that is
blocking active FTP. Try adding --passive-ftp to the wget command
 line.

 HTH,

wget -t inf -T 600 -c -v --passive-ftp --progress=bar -i

OT anyone got 98SE running under bochs ?

2003-02-08 Thread Dave Selby
Hi all,

Has anyone got bochs running 98SE on debian ?

It boots, bios window AOK, starts 98SE with the splash screen, blue ribbon at
bottom scrolls sideways AOK, then ribbon stops and zip !

It wont load any further, no error messages from bochs, top reports a lot of
cpu and memory useage.

boch itself appears to be ok, the power and restart buttons work AOK. It
appears the 98SE has locked up, surprise surprise !

This is not vital, more of an interest thing really to have a pet windows on
my system !

However if anyone can help or nudge me in the right direction it would be
much appreciated.

Dave

PS Thank god for debian, something that actualy works

what is /dev/??? for the parellel port ? escputil

2003-02-04 Thread Dave Selby
Hi, Ive started using escputil to check and clean my print heads, it works
great but I also need to check the ink level, apparently I need to access the

downloader advice ?

2003-02-04 Thread Dave Selby
I am on unmeted internet via NTL UK. This works OK except after 2 Hrs on line
NTL stops sending data but does not drop the line. This is a NTL thing,
however not dropping the line causes me problems when I want to download
large files.

I need the line to be dropped and then the downloader to re-dial, giving me
another 2Hrs of download time.

At present I have setup dial on demand, which works great, so I am halfway
there.

Does anyone know of a downloader that will drop and re-dial every couple of
hours or a work around to do this ?

All help much appreciated

   Dave

Make sure all your hardware ports and connectors are rated for
IEEE-1284. This spec is needed for 2-way communications between the
printer and computer via the parallel port. The most common mistake is
not using an IEEE-1284 rated connecting cable. The standard cable
only provides 1-way comm from the computer to the printer in general
terms. This shouldn't be a problem with recent computer ports or
recently manufactured printers. You can easily still purchase a
 standard cable.

 Cheers,
 -Don Spoon-

Hi mate, Under windows 98, yuk !!, the pucker epson driver gets the info on
ink levels etc AOK, so I guess the cable is AOK

The computer is 3 yr old, ie obsolete !!, the printer 1 year old.

ls -al /dev/lp0 gives

debian:/home/test# ls -al /dev/lp0
crw-rw1 root lp 6, 0 Mar 14 2002 /dev/lp0
debian:/home/test#

So read/write access is OK for root, even though the reported error is cannot
read from /dev/lp0

My pet theory is the epson, being a new design, uses different from what
escputil is looking for

Are you actually logged in as root when you did the debian:/home/test#
ls -al /dev/lp0 command or into your user account. You might want to
check it out when logged in as root. It might just be a permissions
problem. From the above, I would say adding your user account to the
group lp would also let you run this program from there.

I am not familiar with this program I am just guessing here. The fact
that you can clean the heads but not get the ink-levels would indicate
your pet theory is probably correct... Just thought I would bring up
the permission thing just in case...

 Good Luck!

 -Don Spoon-

Yep, am logged in as root when i execute escputil, was only logged in as test
while typing e-mail !! Have already setup /etc/group for root test

I guess pet theory is most likely !!

Thanks for all your help, hell cleaning the heads is more usefull than
knowing the ink level anyhow You know when ink is low, it dont print !!!

Assuming your modem is /dev/ttyS1, echo ATZ /dev/ttyS1.

wget looks good to me, it even resets the modem and re-dials if it is not

I went to http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

downloaded and installed AOK. My assumption being that the .2 signified to

2003-02-01 Thread Dave Selby
I re-configured my computer and installed 2 copies of woody on different
partitions,
all AOK. One for experimenting on, the other for work and serious stuff.

I enabled dial on demand, and generally set up the system. I then tryed to
udate
my system via apt-get. To start with there were 88 upgrades, it upgraded 84
of them
perfectly, the remaining 4 are a nightmare. They just will not load on either
system.

I have tried downloading at different times, downing my firewall, even
changing
my isp from NTL to virgin. The problem persists...

My /etc/apr/sources.list contains ...

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r0 _Woody_ - Official i386 Binary-1

deb http://security.debian.org/ woody/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-non-US stable/non-US main contrib
non-free

which I believe is pretty average. As an extra note, before my re-config I
sucessfully downloaded all the updates AOK.

I have tried to download approx 25+ times, its not a one off problem

Is anyone else having this problem ?
Is there a problem with the server ?

broken download ?? help ??

2003-01-31 Thread Dave Selby
This is a second posting, I'm pulling my hair out !!!

I want to update my system, I type the following

apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade --fix-missing

The server at the other end persistently closes the connection before it
completes the download. Usually while downloading kdebase 4:2.2.2-14.2. I
have tried downloading at different times, I have shut down my firewall, I
have logged on and used a different ISP, all to no avail.

My /etc/apt/sources.list contains ...

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r0 _Woody_ - Official i386 Binary-1
(20020720)]/ unstable contrib main non-US/contrib non-US/main

deb http://security.debian.org/ woody/updates main contrib non-free

Any ideas ?
Is the server corrupt ?
Is this happening to anyone else ?

Dave
slightly stressed after the nth failed apt-get upgrade !!

Avoid updating around UTC (4PM American Pacific Standard Time).
From what I can tell, things get updated to the mirrors around this time.

I suspect the server I am getting the upgrades from is corrupt though I am
not sure. Is it something I am forgetting to do ??

If it is a corrupt server is there another server I can use to get the
package and security updates ??

Its a real pain, every time I want to add a package via dselect, it tries one
again to load these updates, and fails

Any advice gratefully recieved

Yup. Wedge it under a door and it'll keep the door open.

Or, you can cut off most of the PCB, and connect the line sockets to a
spare disk drive power connector, via a wee regulator if necessary.
Then you can plug a suitable cable into them to supply power to your
 external serial modem.

If you have plasterboard walls, you can then use the cut-off PCB to
pretend to be a ninja, throwing it like a death star and watching it
 embed itself in the wall.

 Pigeon

No sorry I just cant agree, I used the winmodem as a door stop and jabbed my
toe, I cut it up and threw it at the wall, it didnt stick

Conclusion

WINMODEMS ARE TOTALLY USELESS !!!

tune2fs ext2 - ext3

2003-01-25 Thread Dave Selby
Im planning to turn my ext2 to an ext3 after a system crash due to a
winmodem driver running with dependency problems ..

OK I get the bit about

tune2fs -j /dev/hda2

I dont get the bit about

touch /forcefsck

touch changes the file timestamps ? I cant find a reference to forcefsck in
its man or info pages. Is it a switch of some kind ?

I can understand doing a fsck, but this command sequence has thrown me !!

Can anyone shed light ??

Does anyone know if the

Is OK with debian ? I can find tons on winmodems but no serial modem
compatibility lists ?

 Good news:
All, and I mean *ALL*, external serial devices are compatible w/ Linux.

I suspected as much, I'll give it a go ...

How do I do this in bash ??

2003-01-19 Thread Dave Selby
Hi all ...

I am writting a weekly automated backup script, very simple .. tars a
directory called 'myfiles' to a second hard drive.

Works AOK except I want the name of the file written by tar to be the time
and date. So I get a list of tared dated backups

I know 'date' gives me exactly what I want but I cant figure out how to get
tar to write a file with the value of date as its file name ...

#! /bin/sh

# Backup entire 'myfiles/' directory, name it with the date.

cd /usr/local/
tar -czf /mnt/archive/autoarchive/date myfiles

I put this in /etc/cron.weekly and I get a file called date !!???
I have tried '' and all to no avail

Any hints ??

debian lockup, fsck fail ....

2003-01-15 Thread Dave Selby
My woody ext2 totaly locked up, my win modem was dialing (I suspect the
driver) while I did a search on kmail for an e-mail :( .. well I guess
nothings perfect ...

I tried ctrl-alt-del ctrl-alt-f1,2,3 ... all dead. I had to power down and
re-boot.

On re-boot the system ran fsck which bommed out and told me to run fsck
manually.

I ran fsck -A, all ok it corrected loads, maybe 20 inodes then hit some ti
did not seem to know what to to with. It has dumped these in the /lost+found
directory. The contents of which is ...

debian:/lost+found#

I also lost my kmail accounts which I have re-enterd.

Are the above lost files ? If so how do I know what is what and how do I put
them back ?

Can anyone point me to documentation about what is an inode, web searches for
info on inodes draws a blank. I would like to know more ?

As always any help gratefully appreciated
Dave

PS The system appears to work AOK now, even with all that has happened. Still
a bit disconcerting !!

they are lost data, could be portions of files. very difficult to
determine what is what, you can try to cat them and if they are text files
you may be able to determine what file it came from. In many cases your
best off restoring from a backup when/if you determine you lost something
of interest. I view these files much like the FILE.CHK files generated
by MS Scandisk on win32 systems.

mmm ... so wait till something doesen't work, check in var/log and figure out
