Hello Friends

My system is

Desktop: LXDE 0.10.1
Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)

I've installed SpaceFM and I'm unable to adjust the width of the Name

Anyone here familiar with SpaceFM customizations?

This currentLXQT / Firefox slowing down computer issue is currently on the
old desktop computer, which has access to good wifi speed.
RAM of this desktop computer is 3GB only.
I'm running an installed 11 system, not a live USB stick.
Thank you.

Hello!

For example when I'm using Firefox and I have about 10 to 12 websites
opened in different tabs

First tab is google, second is ebay, third is amazon, third is youtube, etc.

That's when things get real slow.

I have the CPU Monitor widget on the taskbar. It goes up to almost 100. I
see that when the system slows down or hangs.

Again, I don't think this ever happened in my Debian 10 XFCE. I am now
running Debian 11 LXQT.

Maybe Debian 11 simply consumes more resources?

Thank you

LXQT desktop environment hangs?

2021-10-29 Thread kaye n
Hi Friends!

LXQT says,

It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system.

However, I've experienced the opposite, especially when I'm using Firefox
browser and attempt to open several pages in different tabs.

I don't think the problem lies with Firefox though because I didn't have
that problem on Debian 10 XFCE. I am now running Debian 11 LXQT.

I don't want to use XFCE again just because I want to try another.

Could LXDE be better? Is there a way I can install LXDE to my existing
Debian 11 running LXQT? Or should I just fresh install Debian 11 with LXDE
as the default desktop environment?

Thank you for your time.

I've downloaded this

debian-live-11.1.0-amd64-lxqt+nonfree.iso

Are there no sha512sum for the non-free version? All I can find in Debian
website is this:

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/bt-hybrid/SHA512SUMS

which is the "free" version, correct?

Thank you

Trouble connecting to wifi, Debian 11

2021-10-13 Thread kaye n
Hi Friends

I've installed Debian 11 LXQT in my hard drive.
I noticed connman does not automatically run on startup, which is fine.

I manually open Connman. It can detect my usb wifi adapter because under
Wireless tab, it says

Wifi technologies: 1 Found, 1 powered

However under the same tab, all these buttons after greyed out:
Connect, Disconnect, Remove, Rescan

And I cannot see my router on the list below these buttons.

Tried connecting and disconnecting the usb wifi adapter, no change.

Tried using a pricier usb wifi adapter, same thing.

Tried plugging in a different usb port, same thing.

I had very little trouble connecting to wifi on Debian 10 xfce.

Should i just install Debian 11 xfce or is there a solution to this?

64-bit Debian, by the way.

Also, have the same issue on the live usb Debian 11 - cannot connect to
wifi.

Bit off topic, Debian live usb comes with complete libreoffice except Base.
The installed version on my hard drive has only libreoffice Draw, i think.
Is this normal?

Thank you for your time.

So that's the issue.
What desktop environment would you guys recommend for a desktop computer
with these specs?

CPU:
Dual Core: Intel Core2 Duo E8400 type: MCP speed: 1998 MHz
  min/max: 670/10166 MHz
Graphics:
  Device-1: Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics driver: i915 v: kernel

  unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945G v: 1.4 Mesa 18.3.6

Do I choose xfce, kde, mate, etc. ?

That's my last question, won't bother you again for now.
Thank you very much in advance.

When I try to enter the live Debian, I get the terminal-like screen with
this message:

user@debian:~# [ 41.896110] blk_update_request: I/O error, dev fd0,

The installer seems to run fine although I did not proceed with the
installation because I still want a usb stick that has a working Live
Debian.

Thank you

How exactly do I create a Debian live USB?

2021-10-11 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

I did this and was able to boot my newly created Debian 11 live USB but was
stuck in a black terminal-like screen where it says, I/O error, etc.

Using GParted, I created an MS-DOS partition table and formatted the USB
stick in fat32.

Then I used these commands

sudo cp debian-live-11.0.0-amd64-standard.iso /dev/sdb
sync

All seemed fine until I booted the live USB and got the error message as
stated above.

Thank you for your time.

Hello Friends!

My desktop computer runs Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)

If I try to run viber, I am immediately shown a popup window saying,

There is a Try Again button, but it isn't helping.

This happens even if internet connection is ok.

Thank you.

Hello Friends!

This is an old thread but I think I may have found the problem and I would
like to know your opinion.
As a refresher, my wifi speed on my phone is significantly faster than on
my 10-year old laptop.

Could this be the reason?

from:
https://www.quora.com/Why-is-the-Wi-Fi-internet-slow-on-my-laptop-but-fast-on-my-phone
It could be the computer's Wi-Fi antenna. If the computer only supports
2.4GHz connections it will be slow. If it can use 5GHz but only with
802.11n it will be slower than a phone that has 802.11ac. Also the phone
might use MIMO to increase its Wi-Fi bandwidth. Phones are usually upgraded
more often than computers, so the phone probably has a newer, better
antenna and support of newer faster Wi-Fi standards.

If that's the problem, could this be a possible solution?

from:
https://www.quora.com/Why-is-the-internet-speed-on-my-laptop-so-slow-compared-to-my-mobile-phone-I-am-connecting-from-the-same-place-and-same-network
If you want to speed up your laptop check the WIFI adapter and if it is an
older version buy a new wifi adapter with the latest WIFI (Wi-Fi 6, or
802.11ax today) - which will probably have to be an external USB dongle

Thank you for your time!

Hello Friends
Update again for anyone who's interested.
Wicd worked for a few days. Now it's as slow as the default Network Manager.
Really strange.
I give up.
Thank you for your time.

One of the solutions provided in the link below seems to be effective for
me.

Thank you everyone.

Hello.

 This command,

this line:

Hello Friends!

My laptop, if it matters:
Kernel: 4.19.0-6-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Xfce 4.12.4
Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)

This is a familiar scenario:

Firefox browser in Debian.
Internet speed checker is fast.com
Speed is 670kbps

Built-in browser of Samsung phone
Internet speed checker is fast.com
Speed is 14mbps

I am quite sure I don't get this much disparity with another Linux distro,
as well as in Windows 7.

Thank you for your time!

cannot boot into Debian after transferring hard drive to another desktop computer

2021-03-05 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

Desktop Computer One has a hard drive that is multiboot: Windows 7,
Debian, and another linux operating system which I will call linux-x.

It seems that the MOTHERBOARD of Desktop Computer One has finally given out
(wild guess only, as even a linux live USB can't function properly). I
took out the multiboot hard drive and put it in another desktop computer
which I call Desktop Computer Two.

Now I can boot into linux-x just fine with Desktop Computer Two. I'm using
linux-x to type and send this email. I have not tried the windows 7 yet.

However I cannot boot into Debian (I believe it is Debian 10). I get this

What file system is on the flash drive? What does gparted or parted
report?
Gparted shows fat32 as the file system of the flash drive.

Are the files marked read only (ro), or is the entire flash drive
mounted ro?
The dbf files seem to be READ WRITE EXECUTE for OWNER, GROUP, and OTHER

Are you editing the calc files from Linux or Windows?
>From Debian 10

How, exactly, are you mounting the flash drive under Linux. What
command?
I just insert the flash drive to the desktop computer and it mounts and is
ready for use.
If it matters, here is the /etc/fstab
UUID=2E7B-BA02   /media/kaye   vfat
user,rw,noauto,uid=1000,gid=users,umask=0,dmask=0,fmask=0,users,exec,x-systemd.device-timeout=5s,
  00

How long has this been going on?
Just last night

What do the logs say? /var/log/syslog, or .../messages?
I fail to open it

Flash Drive suddenly read only?

2021-01-30 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

When I plug in my usb flash drive to my desktop computer, I can edit
certain libreoffice calc files saved in that flash drive. But after I try
to copy several dbf files from the desktop computer hard drive to the flash
drive via the terminal, it says it's read only. When I open the calc files
again, they are now read only and cannot be edited.

The desktop is dual boot system, windows 7 and Debian 10.

If it matters, the dbf files in the desktop hard drive are always edited in
windows, then I sometimes log in to Debian and copy the desktop hard drive
dbf files onto my usb flash drive. I cannot do that anymore, as stated
above. Even after rebooting or powering off.

Thank you for your time!

Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)

>From this web page, https://wiki.debian.org/SynapticsTouchpad
I tried this

$ mkdir -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
$ echo 'Section "InputClass"
Identifier "libinput touchpad catchall"
MatchIsTouchpad "on"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "libinput"
Option "Tapping" "on"

$ systemctl restart lightdm

It did not work. I guess it's to be expected since I'm using Debian 10 and

Any workaround?

You are absolutely right. When I was choosing the appropriate file in

Menu -> Settings -> Preferred Applications -> Utilities tab -> File Manager

there was no spacefm executable, only the spacefm-auth. Now it's there. I

Anyway, problem solved.

Error making another file manager the preferred app

2020-10-24 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

Firstly, if it matters, my system is:

Kernel: 4.19.0-6-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: Xfce 4.12.4
Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
Machine:
  Type: Desktop Mobo: MSI model: H81M-P33 (MS-7817) v: 1.0 serial: N/A
  BIOS: American Megatrends v: 1.9 date: 03/30/2015
CPU:
Dual Core: Intel Core i3-4130 type: MT MCP speed: 800 MHz
  min/max: 800/3400 MHz

I installed Spacefm file manager thru Synaptic because I prefer it over
Thunar. For those who may be curious as to why, Spacefm has a very useful
feature that is similar to the command :

ls *anycharacter*

I went to Menu -> Settings -> Preferred Applications -> Utilities tab ->
File Manager -> dropdown list - Other... -> choose /usr/bin/spacefm-auth
"%s"

If I click Menu on the taskbar and click File Manager, it SHOULD open
Spacefm, but I get this error message instead:
Failed to execute default File Manager. Input/output error.

Not a big deal really, but it would be nice to make it work.

Thank you for your time.

one thing i don't like about Thunar file manager

2020-10-12 Thread kaye n
Hi guys, I don't know if there's any way to set it, but I would like to be
able to do the following in Thunar file manager:

Let's say there are three files with the names -
apple-pie
banana-split
orange-juice

On the file manager window, I would type the letter o and the file
'orange-juice' would be selected. However, I would also want the ability
to select that file by typing j (for juice).

This is possible with another file manager, but not with Thunar as far as I
can tell.
Am I wrong? What other file managers would you recommend for my Debian
system that has that feature?

Thank you for your time.

I use Evince to print pdf's. It's really good. I think you can press
alt+enter and see the paper size, i.e. what type of paper you should use to
print - short bond, legal, A4

I think it shows up as "Document Viewer" in the menu.

How to install zsnes

2020-04-27 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

So I want to play a couple of classic SNES (super nintendo entertainment
system?) games via the app called zsnes, but I can't install it.

kaye@laptop:~$ sudo apt install zsnes
Reading package lists... Done

Reading state information... Done
Package zsnes is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'zsnes' has no installation candidate

Any ideas?

I was able to install zsnes in another Linux distro.

Thank you very much!

No issue at all. I was just wondering if there was another way. In another
distro, I press Ctrl+Alt+Space and type 'gksu filemanager' and type my
password, that's it. I find it much easier. Plus there's no terminal open

But like I said, not a big deal. Just asking if there's another way besides
opening terminal and typing 'sudo thunar' then password.

That's all.

I tried that. I commented my line ( in /etc/fstab )

UUID=2E7B-BA02   /media/myflashdrive   vfat
user,rw,noauto,uid=1000,gid=users,umask=0,dmask=0,fmask=0,users,exec,x-systemd.device-timeout=5s,
00

and executed

bash ./run_game.sh

it would'nt run.

Then I uncommented the line and I could run the game again by executing

bash ./run_game.sh.

Just a reminder, the above line is for my flash drive.

No big deal though. As long as it's working I'm happy. But I wouldn't mind
learning something from you guys.

Thanks!!

Re: cannot execute make-fstab in Debian?

2020-04-06 Thread kaye n
Sorry about that. I should have tested it first.

What I'm trying to achieve is to be able to save files and to run
executable files (like .sh file) from an NTFS partition of the hard drive,
as well as from a USB flash drive.

It seems that in Debian, I can already do that in an NTFS partition of the
hard drive, can you confirm?

As for the flash drive, I have to add this line to the /etc/fstab file (so
I can run .sh files from the flash drive)

*UUID=2E7B-BA02 /media/myflashdrive vfat
user,rw,noauto,uid=1000,gid=users,umask=0,dmask=0,fmask=0,users,exec,x-systemd.device-timeout=5s,
00 *

In the other distro, I would delete the existing /etc/fstab file, execute *sudo
make-fstab* in order to generate a new fstab file, and in that fstab file
there would be a line for the flash drive. I would then edit that line to
make it look like the one above so that I can run .sh files from the flash
drive.

As make-fstab command doesn't exist in Debian, I just added the above line
to /etc/fstab and it seems to have solved the problem. But can you confirm
that line as well? I'm not an expet.

Thank you!

cannot execute make-fstab in Debian?

2020-04-06 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

I assume this is the correct syntax?

sudo make-fstab

I can execute it in another distro but not in my Debian.

Here's my Debian:

Kernel: 4.19.0-6-amd64 x86_64
bits: 64
Desktop: Xfce 4.12.4
Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)

Thank you very much!

Hello Friends!

kaye@laptop:~$ blkid
bash: blkid: command not found
kaye@laptop:~$ whereis blkid
blkid: /usr/sbin/blkid /usr/share/man/man8/blkid.8.gz

As you can see, blkid is present in a couple of directories but I cannot
run it.

change the mount point of my flash drive

2020-04-01 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

It seems that in Debian, my USB flash drive is automatically mounted at:

/media/user/myflashdrive

Is it possible to permanently change it to /media/myflashdrive ?

The reason is because I have many LibreOffice Calc files in my flash drive
that are linked to each other.

The 'user' in my laptop is kaye. The 'user' in my desktop is something
else, let's say it's peter.

If I link the Calc files using my laptop, the links would use the path
/media/kaye/myflashdrive.

If I then plug the flash drive on the desktop computer to continue work on
the same Calc files, I could not do so because the links have the path
/media/kaye/myflashdrive, whereas in the desktop computer the path or the
mount point is /media/peter/myflashdrive.

LibreOffice Calc in the desktop computer can't find
/media/kaye/myflashdrive because the 'user' in the desktop computer is
peter.

I hope that's clear.

Thank you for your time!

I'm sorry Joe, I have no idea what you just said. I only know the basics of
GNU/Linux.
The reason I went with that tecmint.com's method is because if I download
directly from virtualbox's website ( which I think is a deb file?) and I
execute the dpkg -i command, I get dependency issues. But the virtualbox
seems to have installed despite the dependency issues. I did not try to
use that virtualbox and instead I removed it from my system and tried
tecmint.com's method, which installed an older version.

Thank you!

What do you think of this:
https://www.tecmint.com/install-virtualbox-on-debian-10/

I've tried it and it works. It installed version 6.0.18

But what if I want to get the latest version of virtualbox which is 6.1.4 ?

about debian installation on gpt and mbr hard drive

2020-03-11 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

Can someone please confirm to me once and for all if I'm correct with these
assumptions regarding debian installation on hard drives:

1. If the hdd has an MBR partition style, that hdd needs to have a FAT32
partition, flagged as esp and with mount point at /boot/efi. If this is
correct, can I put it anywhere on the hdd or must it be on the left-most
part of the drive (when looking at it in GParted) ? Also how big should
the FAT32 partition be if, a) no Windows would be installed on the hdd, and
b) Windows will be installed on the hdd making it a dual boot system.

2. If the hdd has a GPT partition style, there is no need for a FAT32
partition (that is flagged as esp and mounted at /boot/efi), unless of
course you would install Windows 10, making it a dual boot system, but even
then, Debian would not use or need the FAT32 partition.

Please confirm my assumptions and answer some of my questions (in number
one).

Thank you very much for your time!

failure to install debian

2020-03-08 Thread kaye n

I thought the problem was my live USB, but when I used another Debian

I get the same result.

I did not resize the debian partitions, I merely reformatted it.

I honestly don't know how I got that because I was not trying to boot over

I believe I created the GPT partition using GParted from a live USB of
another distro.

I just figured that the /home partition is where config files of apps are
kept, correct? And they're just small files? When I install an app, most
of it goes into / , and not /home, therefore I usually make /home a
separate partition and at 2GB only.

Windows will automatically create a partition out of the 50GB partition

Just curious, never encountered that command before.

Thank you guys for telling me the email got lost. I'll just describe it.

The partition table is GPT.

Imagine you're looking at the graphical presentation of my hdd in GParted.

Starting from the left:

858GB NTFS partition (intended for storing all kinds of data)

then

20GB ext4 partition, with mount point /

then

2GB ext4 partition, with mount point /home

then

1GB swap partition

then

50GB NTFS partition (intended for windows)

then, finally

only 10MB FAT32 partition because debian installer says I need an efi but I
don't know how big it should be. Mount point at /boot/efi

If I boot from the hard drive, I ge this message:

Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Series v2.43 (08/25/11)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

That's it. Thank you!

Re: Anyone with experience scanning with Epson

2020-02-09 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends! I'm the OP.

Problem solved.

One laptop. Two printers. Epson L220 (USB connected) and Epson L355 (wifi
connected). I can now print and scan with both printers, one connected
via USB, and the other over wifi.

With regards to scanning, if I have been scanning with L220, then for some
reason I need to switch to wifi scanner L355 to scan something else, all I
need to do is edit /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf by:

commenting out

*usb 0x04b8 0x08d1*
and uncommenting *net 192.168.X.XXX *(so I can switch to scanning over
wifi).

Unfortunately I'm not sure exactly what got it to work. I can only tell
you what I installed, and what files I created and edited.

Weird as it is, it seems I have to install these two. Again, not sure if
it was indeed the solution that got it working.

 *sudo dpkg --install imagescan_3.57.0-1epson4debian8_amd64.deb *
(which is inside the core folder of this file:
*imagescan-bundle-debian-8-3.57.0.x64.deb.tar.gz)*

and

also using dpkg command on the deb files in the core and data folders of
this file: *iscan-bundle-1.0.0.x64.deb.tar.gz*

Furthermore, here are some things that I'm not sure is necessary. I will
leave it as is because everything is working fine and I'm too lazy to rule
out anything that's not needed.

In */etc/sane.d/dll.conf *, notice what is commented and uncommented.

#epjitsu
#epson
#epson2
#epsonds
epkowa

Also, created the files

*/etc/udev/rules.d/49-sane-missing-scanner.rules*
and

*/etc/udev/rules.d/myVendor.rules*
and added the following lines in them:

*SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}==”08d1″,
MODE="0664", GROUP=”scanner”,
ENV{libsane_matched}=”yes"SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8",
ATTRS{idProduct}==”08d1″, MODE="0664", GROUP=”scanner”,
ENV{libsane_matched}=”yes"*
That's about all the things I did. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Been
using Linux for years but compared to you guys I know next to nothing.

Thank you very much for all your input!

Anyone with experience scanning with Epson

2020-02-06 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

I'm running:
Kernel: 4.19.0-6-amd64 x86_64
bits: 64
Desktop: Xfce 4.12.4
Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)

My printer is an Epson L220. It's connected to my laptop's USB port.

The command lsusb shows:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID *04b8:08d1* Seiko Epson Corp.

Therefore in the file, /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf
I added this line:

*usb 0x04b8 0x08d1*
The printer can print just fine, but ImageScan and XSane would not run.

ImageScan says:
Could not send command to scanner. Check the scanner's status.

XSane says:
Failed to open device 'epkowa:usb:002:003':
Access to resource has been denied.

Thank you for your time!

I was just wondering if it takes about 35 seconds for your Debian system to

Can I restore grub in this scenario

2020-02-05 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

Suppose I installed Debian first followed by Windows 10. The GRUB will be
overwritten, correct?

How do I get it back? Do I boot a Debian live USB? Does a Debian live USB
have a tool where I can easily install GRUB in the mbr? (then it would
detect the windows os, if not then I execute sudo update-grub)

Thank you for your time.

Hello Friends!

I was downloading something via Firefox browser but it keeps failing. So
I tried wget but same result, but at least in the terminal I get an error
message:

TLS connection was non-properly terminated.). Retrying.

It seems to be similar to this?

Unfortunately I'm not smart enough to understand any of that. Maybe some of
you experts can give me a step by step solution.

Thank you very much!

No official way to make Debian Live USB "persistent"?

2020-01-18 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends!

Correct me if I'm wrong but there doesn't seem to be an 'official' way of
creating a Live USB Debian that is 'persistent'.

If I google it, I get instructions from other websites, like this one:

http://cosmolinux.no-ip.org/raconetlinux2/persistence.html

1. Do you think it's wise to follow the steps on that web page?

2. Please confirm my understanding of 'persistence'. If I boot a Debian
Live USB, connect to the internet via wifi, download gimp, vlc, kdenlive,
and freecad, and then I shutdown down the computer and boot the Live USB
again, the Live USB Debian would remember the wifi password and connect
automatically, and gimp, vlc, kdenlive and freecad would all still be
there. That is persistence, yes?

Thank you very much.

Or can one ask just about anything as long as it's related to GNU/Linux,

I'm asking because I can't find what I'm looking for elsewhere. It's about

No worries if this is for Debian only.

I have to create a file in /etc/sudoers.d and not use the file
/etc/sudoers.d/10-installer? And what should I name the file?
(I edited the 10-installer file with the line kaye ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:
/usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness but it doesn't have any effect; in fact
I think sudo was rendered useless to me, as in I cannot execute sudo, it
said something like an error in line something)

#includedir /etc/sudoers.d is not a comment? that's weird but thanks for

Hi guys, I'm the OP.

This is in Debian:

kaye@laptop:~$ ls -R /etc/sudoers.d
/etc/sudoers.d:
10-installer README

kaye@laptop:~$ cat /etc/sudoers
cat: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied

/usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness

This is in antiX distro:

$ ls -R /etc/sudoers.d

 $ cat /etc/sudoers
cat: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied

$ ls -l /usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 19490 Nov 15 2017
/usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness

I don't understand why adding the line:

kaye ALL= /usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness

in

/etc/sudoers.d/10-installer

of my Debian system does not work.

Hi friends
Are you guys sure you want to see the contents of the script? It has 574
lines of code in there.

This is on Debian:

kaye@laptop:~$ ls -R /etc/sudoers.dcat /etc/sudoers
ls: cannot access '/etc/sudoers.dcat': No such file or directory
/etc/sudoers

kaye@laptop:~$ ls -l /usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root kaye 19490 Nov 15 2017
/usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness

This is on the other distro:

kaye@laptop:~
$ ls -R /etc/sudoers.dcat /etc/sudoers
ls: cannot access '/etc/sudoers.dcat': No such file or directory
/etc/sudoers

kaye@laptop:~
$ ls -l /usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 19490 Nov 15 2017
/usr/local/bin/backlight-brightness

I guess it's the same?

I need to be root to run this script

2020-01-14 Thread kaye n
Hello Friends

I copied a script called backlight-brightness from the directory,
/usr/local/bin
of another GNU/Linux distro,
and pasted it to the same directory of my Debian system.

If I run it in terminal,
kaye@laptop:~$ backlight-brightness
backlight-brightness: You need to be root to run this script

Is it possible to be able to execute the script without being root?

If it matters, in the other distro I would just press some key-binding that
allows me to enter an app name so I can run it, (much like in Debian where
I would press Alt-F2 which opens Application Finder and I would type an app
name to execute it) , and I would type in backlight-brightness and it would
open, no root needed.

Thank you.

Hello Friends!

My system:
Kernel: 4.19.0-6-amd64 x86_64
bits: 64
Desktop: Xfce 4.12.4
Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)

1. The file manager Thunar, doesn't seem to remember my column width
preferences. I'm referring to the Name, Size, Type, Modified columns.
Whenever I open Thunar, I have to adjust the Name width, for example, so I
can see the longer file names.

2. The touchpad of my laptop has the area where I can run my finger to
move the mouse pointer on the screen (I don't know what it's called so I'll
call it mouse tracker), and below it are two buttons, just like a typical
laptop touchpad. I can't seem to use the mouse tracker as a button by
simply double-tapping it. I have to move the mouse pointer on the screen
and then click on the physical button of the touchpad in order to click on
anything.

Thank you for your time.

Re: Print Settings issue

2020-01-09 Thread kaye n
Hey Doug McGarrett

You're using a different distro so I'm not sure if I can help you, but I
would just like everyone to know that I think I've got it. I am now able
to print over wifi, and scan with both Xsane and Image Scan over wifi.

If you search for your printer here,
http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/
in my experience, if it doesn't say that it requires lsb, then you can
install it just fine.

If it says it requires lsb, then look at the Product Name, for example here:
http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/02/DriverDownloadInfo.do?LG2=EN==18787=cd4ad419e3805cfac26d6492d12e38fc7da11822

you can see that the driver is shared among several printer models. Go to
Print Settings, add printer and if you're printer model is not listed
there, choose a model that uses the same driver as YOUR printer, and
install it.

Same technique for the scanner driver.
Thanks!
